Strange New Worlds Season 3 Episode 5 Reminds Us Of A Legendary Horror Story

Spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" to follow.

The main characters of "Star Trek" are explorers above all else, and sometimes, exploration is about investigating the past. That's exactly what happens in "Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 5, "Through the Lens of Time."

In an earlier season 3 episode, "Wedding Bell Blues," we met Christine Chapel's (Jess Bush) new boyfriend Dr. Roger Korby (Cillian O'Sullivan). We know from "Star Trek: The Original Series" — specifically the episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" — that Chapel and Korby will get engaged, but it'll fall through when he goes missing on an archaeological dig.

"Through the Lens of Time" shows Korby in action as an archaeologist. He and a small away team, including Spock (Ethan Peck), LA'an (Christina Chong), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Beto Ortegas (Mynor Luken), discover what appears to be...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3's Spookiest Episode Borrows From Two Sci-Fi Horror Classics
Image
Set phasers to spoilers. This article discusses major events from the latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."

If the creative team behind "Strange New Worlds" are trying to convince us that "Star Trek" can support any possible combination of genres and tones, season 3 is already proving to be a brilliant case study. In the span of only five episodes, we've seen an action thriller with the Gorn, a romantic fantasy drama (emphasis on fantasy) featuring Spock (Ethan Peck) and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), a self-contained zombie invasion, and a whimsical throwback to the aesthetics of "The Original Series" wrapped in a murder-mystery plot. Now, the show's writers have just unleashed what might go down as the most ambitious hour yet in all of "Strange New Worlds," and it takes a page (or two) out of a pair of under-appreciated horror touchstones.

Yes, "Star Trek" is once again voyaging...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Actor Dreams of Commander Riker Role in Tng Reboot
Image
Star Trek: Strange New Worldsguest star Cillian O'Sullivan's dream role would be a main character in a Star Trek: The Next Generation reboot. O'Sullivan plays Dr. Roger Korby, the new love interest of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Korby is also a legacy character who takes a villainous turn in Star Trek: The Original Series.

In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant's John Orquiola about playing Dr. Roger Korby in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Cillian O'Sullivan described himself as a "massive" Star Trek fan who grew up loving Star Trek: The Next Generation. Noting that he didn't expect to play Korby in Star Trek until it happened, O'Sullivan revealed who from Tng would be his dream role. Read Cillian's quote below:

Cillian O'Sullivan: "Maybe, and maybe this would be a tragedy if they did, but if they ever remade Star Trek: The Next Generation,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Remakes A Tng Episode With A Much Darker Twist
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

This post contains spoilers for season 3 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is not shy about lifting heavily from past "Star Trek" episodes. The series basically remade the classic episode "Balance of Terror" twice during its first season, first spiritually in "Memento Mori" and then literally in the season 1 finale "A Quality of Mercy."

"Hegemony," the two part episode that closed "Strange New Worlds" season 2 and opened season 3, had a cliffhanger and resolution that echoed the famous "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Best of Both Worlds." For the latest "Strange New Worlds" outing, "Through the Lens of Time," the series pulls from a less beloved "Tng" episode.

"Through the Lens of Time" guest stars Dr. Roger Korby (Cillian O'Sullivan), archaeologist and boyfriend of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). The Enterprise is assisting Korby...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Finally Has A Terrifying New Villain To Call Its Own
Image
In the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Through the Lens of Time," Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) and her new boyfriend Roger Korby (Cillian O'Sullivan) have discovered an impossibly ancient temple hidden beneath the rocks of a distant world. The technology in the temple is still active after countless unhallowed centuries, and it requires a drop of blood to enter. Everything is scary and mysterious. Inside, the crew of the Enterprise find a series of glowing orbs that contain ... something. They also find that they can pass through unusual stone passageways and step into different planes of existence. The six crew members are all in the same room, but they can't see one another because they are out of phase. It's like a haunted house or an abandoned asylum.

When the ship's new nurse Ensign Gamble (Chris Myers) picks up one of the mysterious orbs, it explodes in his hand.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Bosses Talk New Big Bad & Batel Surviving Gorn ‘at a Great Cost’
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Episode 5 “Through the Lens of Time.”] The Gorn may be off the board — for now, at least, as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds executive producer Henry Alonso Myers is quick to note, “The Gorn aren’t out of the way, you’re going to see them again” — but there’s already a new Big Bad. In the latest episode, a landing party of Chapel (Jess Bush), La’an (Christina Chong), Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Beto (Mynor Luken), and Ensign Gamble join Korby (Cillian O’Sullivan) on a planet only to end up in what they, only later, realize is a layered dimensional prison — and one of the prisoners injures and infects Gamble (destroying his eyes). Held inside is an evil, known as the Vezda, and it does eventually leave Gamble’s body (he’s already dead) after Pelia (Carol Kane) shoots it.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Showrunner Confirms Whether The Vezda Will Return [Exclusive]
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 4, "Through the Lens of Time."

The latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," called "Through the Lens of Time," sees the discovery of an impossibly ancient temple located underneath a mountain. Although its age is mind-boggling, the technology embedded in the temple still works. In order to gain access through its nostril-like entryway, Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) has to insert her hand into a blood-extracting device. Ancient temples, ineffable technologies, and blood offerings all give "Through the Lens of Time" a Lovecraftian feeling.

Inside, the crew find a series of small glowing glass orbs that contain something they can't identify. One of the orbs ends up bursting open, sending shards of glass -- and a mysterious energy of some kind -- flying into the eyeballs of Ensign Gamble (Chris Myers). Ensign Gamble's eyeballs are destroyed, but something...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showrunners plan to pitch Year One spin-off series set on Kirk’s Enterprise
Rebecca Romijn, Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Melissa Navia, and Jess Bush in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Ever since news broke that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will conclude with a shortened fifth season, fans have been eager to know what’s next for the franchise. As it turns out, co-creator Akiva Goldsman and co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers already have a new series in mind that would pick up right where Strange New Worlds leaves off. The potential project, dubbed Star Trek: Year One, would take place during the first year of Captain James T. Kirk’s five-year mission.

Goldsman has previously told TrekMovie that the finale of Strange New Worlds will show Kirk’s first day in command of the Enterprise, but he feels that there’s some wiggle room between that moment and Where No Man Has Gone Before, the first episode of The Original Series to feature Kirk. “Strange New Worlds ends on Jim Kirk’s first day of work as captain of the Enterprise,...

As the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worldsprogresses, one actor is praising his co-star for helping him earn a pivotal role in the series. Actor Cillian O’Sullivan made his Strange New Worlds debut in "Wedding Bell Blues," the second episode of the third season.

Now, per ScreenRant, O’Sullivan is crediting his co-star, Jess Bush, and her generosity for aiding him in snagging the role. The actor, who recently played Devlin in the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again, talked about his Strange New Worlds audition, which took place via Zoom.

“Jess Bush is such an amazing actor,” O’Sullivan said. Bush plays the role of Nurse Christine Chapel in Strange New Worlds, and O’Sullivan is tasked with playing her love interest, Dr. Roger Korby.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 4, "A Space Adventure Hour"

The stars of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have nothing but great things to say about working with director Jonathan Frakes. Frakes began his Star Trek journey by portraying Commander William Riker throughout all seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and he first took on the role of director for Tng season 3's "The Offspring."

Most recently, Jonathan Frakes directed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 4, "A Space Adventure Hour," which featured a 1960s murder mystery on the holodeck. As part of the Comic-Con Variety Studio Presented by Google TV, Strange New Worlds stars Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Paul Wesley, Christina Chong, and Jess Bush spoke about their experience working with Frakes. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Spock and LA'an's Romance Shocked The Actors
Image
Warning: Spoilers For Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3Star Trek: Strange New Worldsseason 3's new couple even shocked actors Ethan Peck and Christina Chong. As Lieutenants Spock and LA'an Noonien-Singh, respectively, Peck and Chong had different romantic partners in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2. This changed in season 3 when LA'an and Spock grew closer after becoming intimate dance partners.

Speaking to Variety at San Diego Comic-Con alongside their Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast mates Rebecca Romijn, Jess Bush, and Paul Wesley, along with executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, Ethan Peck and Christina Chong related their mutual shock upon learning Spock and LA'an's friendship would turn romantic.

Christina Chong understandably expected LA'an's attraction to Paul Wesley's Lt. James T. Kirk would evolve, while Peck explained why Spock and LA'an "makes a lot of sense on some level." Read their quotes and watch the video below:

Christina Chong: I was shocked.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds paid tribute to Dawn of the Dead star Ken Foree in zombie episode
Ken Foree in The X-Files (1993)
Ken Foree plays an unforgettable role in one of the great movies ever made, the George A. Romero classic Dawn of the Dead (get it Here) – so it’s nice to hear (as reported by our friends at Bloody Disgusting) that the makers of the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds decided to pay tribute to Foree in their recent, unexpected zombie episode! In the third episode of Strange New Worlds‘ third season, the crew of the starship Enterprise ventured to a planet that was overrun by zombie-like creatures – and this planet was called Kenfori! The Ken Foree reference even made it into the title of the episode: Shuttle to Kenfori.

Word of the tribute quickly made its way to Ken Foree himself, who posted on social media, “I know this is out there, but I wanted to share this with you as well. It’s an honor and...

Cillian O'Sullivan Praises Jess Bush's Generosity In His Star Trek Audition

Cillian O'Sullivan praises Jess Bush's talent and generosity for helping him book the role of Dr. Roger Korby in Star Trek: Strange New Worldsseason 3. O'Sullivan debuted as Korby in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 2, "Wedding Bell Blues," and Roger, being Nurse Christine Chapel's new boyfriend, was an unpleasant surprise to her former flame, Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck).

O'Sullivan effusively praises Jess Bush for being "very generous" in his audition, noting that "she gave me everything that she could" in the difficult circumstances of doing a chemistry read over Zoom. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds To End Without Every Member Of Kirk's Enterprise
Image
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' ending in season 5 is in the works, and executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers confirm that not every character from Star Trek: The Original Series will appear in the prequel's finale. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is in the midst of season 3, but Paramount+ has already set the end of the series with its fifth and final season.

Speaking to Collider's Steven Weintraub at San Diego Comic-Con, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' executive producers and co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers were joined by stars Jess Bush, Christina Chong, and Paul Wesley.

Goldsman and Myers reiterated their previously announced plan for Strange New Worlds to end "right up to Kirk's first day in the chair" as Captain of the USS Enterprise, but that Star Trek's canonical timeline"won't mean everybody who is in Tos" will appear at the end of the prequel.

Strange New Worlds Season 3's New Romantic Subplot Had To Happen Thanks To Star Trek Canon
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 4, "A Space Adventure Hour."

As of "A Space Adventure Hour," Spock (Ethan Peck) and LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) are the newest power couple on the Enterprise. As the two hottest members of the Enterprise bridge crew, it is only logical that they hook up.

Joking aside, this pairing actually does make sense, and there's been build-up if you look back to past episodes. Both Spock and LA'an are repressed people who hold their emotions close to their chest. LA'an's song back in the musical episode "Subspace Rhapsody" was called "How Would That Feel?", and was all about her imagining what it would be like to open up to people. She's now doing it with someone who's shared a similar struggle.

Back in season 1's "Memento Mori," they shared a mind meld. LA'an has to confront an evil from...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Directly (And Finally) Parodies The Original Series
Image
This post contains spoilers for season 3 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."

After three seasons spent both earnestly and playfully building up to the events of "The Original Series," Paramount+ prequel "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" has finally touched on the existence of that beloved, groundbreaking original property. The result of the show's first and only "Tos" parody to date is a mixed bag of mid-century attitudes, gaudy costumes, endearingly cheap sets, and strange acting choices.

The retro show within a show first appears during the cold open of "A Space Adventure Hour," which introduces viewers to the not-quite-"Star Trek" show called "The Last Frontier." Presented without context, these moments of "The Last Frontier" are a roller coaster of an experience, one that borrows overtly from Gene Roddenberry's original series -- and even recreates its entire opening credits with a similar monologue -- yet also adds in flourishes...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Gets a Puppet Episode
Anson Mount

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is boldly going where no Trek series has gone before… into the world of puppetry! In a surprise reveal at San Diego Comic‑Con, fans learned that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will become puppets for a highly anticipated Season 4 episode. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Lets Paul Wesley Play Kirk Like William Shatner (And It Works)
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 4, "A Space Adventure Hour."

The latest "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode, "A Space Adventure Hour," opens in bizarre fashion. On the bridge of a starship, a captain and his first officer discuss the ship picking up some radiation. That doesn't sound too out of place, does it? Except the captain is played by Paul Wesley (who plays Jim Kirk) and the first officer by Jess Bush (who plays Christine Chapel), neither of whom are their usual characters. The costume, set design (magnetic computer tapes!), score, foggy camera quality, and tinny audio are all closer to the original 1960s "Star Trek" ... and that's exactly the point.

It turns out the Enterprise, specifically LA'an, is being tasked with studying a prototype holodeck. LA'an chooses the setting: a mid-20th century Hollywood murder mystery. She plays detective Amelia Moon in...

Where Will ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Go Next? Crew Hints at How It’ll End (Video)
Image
Boldly going where they fit right in, the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds beamed down to San Diego for Comic-Con International last week for a marathon session of press appearances, a show panel, and tons of fan love. Riding high on the reaction to their killer murder-mystery episode, the crew stopped by the TV Insider Studio and was game for a round of hard-hitting questions. The topics ranged from those about playing outside of the box to who ‘ships who, and how they’re bringing the wonderfully creative prequel series — which will be ending with Season 5 — in for a landing that properly sets the stage for the original Trek. “That is our Job 1 of the last season, to get us right up to Kirk’s first day in the chair,” says executive producer Akiva Goldsman, who joined co-ep Henry Alonso Meyers and cast members Paul Wesley, Christina Chong,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Showunners & Cast Tease Upcoming Puppet Episode: "More Than 6 Months Of Work"
Image
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showrunners and cast tease the upcoming puppet episode. Set before James Kirk takes command, the series follows Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise. While Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is currently airing, season 4 has already been confirmed, and will feature an episode where the cast is turned into puppets.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers tease the upcoming episode and how much work went into it. Due to the unique episode having a different filming process and an additional full crew of puppeteers, the episode took over six months of work. The cast also reacts to the episode, with Christina Chong, Jess Bush, and Rebecca Romijn calling it "Insane," "Pure joy," and "An excellent script."

Myers: I wanna say there was easily more than six months of work on it.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Team Talks Very Meta Episode, That Kiss & More
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Episode 4 “A Space Adventure Hour.”] The latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is, in a word, fun. But such is the case for pretty much every episode of this Paramount+ series, which, since it premiered in 2022, has been one of the most entertaining shows on television. But with “A Space Adventure Hour,” Strange New Worlds goes so meta, with a low-budget knock-off Star Trek series within the episode, which introduces a prototype of the holodeck. La’an (Christina Chong) is tasked with testing it out, and she has Scotty (Martin Quinn) create a simulation based on a detective series, Amelia Moon. In it, La’an is the detective, while Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Celia Rose Gooding, Babs Olusanmokun, Melissa Navia, Jess Bush, and Paul Wesley all play characters, crew members, executive producers, and the like from the aforementioned TV show, The Last Frontier.

Inside the Making of the ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Murder Mystery Episode
Image
Since “The Next Generation” first powered up the holodeck, “Star Trek” episodes have been able to use the fabled sci-fi device to create whatever environment someone can program. The conceit — thanks to replicator technology, holograms, and the suspension of disbelief — has given us a pipe-smoking Data playing Sherlock Holmes, Capt. Janeway starting a morally complex relationship with an Irish barman, and the creation of Vic Fontaine and his nightclub on Deep Space Nine.

Starfleet is in the early stages of developing the holodeck in the time of “Strange New Worlds,” and Season 3’s “A Space Adventure Hour” has the USS Enterprise beta testing the technology. The episode follows holodeck episode tradition, and in it, we see the cast take on new characters, new costumes, and more than a few wigs.

Anson Mount’s Capt. Pike tasks Christina Chong’s La’an to run the nascent program through the wringer to see how it holds up.

Strange New Worlds season 3 episode 4 recap: A holodeck mystery leads to fun chaos
Image
If there’s one thing Star Trek fans know, it’s that if it’s a holodeck-centered episode, there’s going to be trouble. So was the case with “A Space Adventure Hour,” this week’s crazy Strange New Worlds episode that utilizes the holodeck for a story combining Knives Out with Galaxy Quest amid the usual Trek shenanigans, while also providing some surprisingly good character work amid the emergency.

From the start, we’re in for a wild ride. Rather than a standard opening, we see what looks like an ultra-cheesy retro-1960s sci-fi TV series where Kirk is the captain (Paul Wesley is doing his best cliche over the top William Shatner impression), with Ortegas, his first officer, and Chapel, a science officer, all in wildly bizarre outfits and hairdos.

They contact an alien who is clearly a puppet with very visible wires, which leads to a “battle...

Watch Paul Wesley Channel ’60s Shatner in ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Murder Mystery Sneak Peek
Image
One of the true delights of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 3 is the fourth episode, streaming this Thursday, July 31, on Paramount+. Titled “A Space Adventure Hour,” it centers on La’an in the new holodeck now installed aboard the USS Enterprise. The program she runs is a murder mystery set in the late 1960s among the cast of a TV show that… looks very, very familiar.

On this ’60s show, Paul Wesley plays the captain of a starship who likes to show some skin and chew the scenery, every one of his line readings taking on galactic import. Sound familiar? Take a look at a clip of Wesley sinking his teeth deeply into one bit of dialogue while surrounded by pop art colors, papier-mache props, and beehive hairdos below.

This is one of the great examples of “Star Trek” having fun with its history, and poking some light fun at William Shatner.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Scary Season 3 Gorn Twist Gets Hilarious Response From Actor

Warning: Spoilers For Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 3, "Shuttle To Kenfori"

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Melanie Scrofano offered a hilarious response when asked about her character's Gorn transformation in the show's third season. Scrofano has been portraying Marie Batel, Starfleet captain and romantic partner of Captain Christoper Pike (Anson Mount), since the premiere of Strange New Worlds. 'Strange New Worlds' Season 5 Only Exists to Fulfill a Promise Made to Fans [Exclusive]
Image
Earlier this year, Star Trek fans got the disappointing news that Strange New Worlds would be ending after a truncated fifth season. The news was almost worse, but for the creative team behind the show, a promise made was a debt unpaid, and they worked to bring the series to a satisfying conclusion. They discussed the show's final season with Collider's Steve Weintraub at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con.

Co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman explained how the six-episode fifth season — which is four episodes shorter than a standard Paramount+ Star Trek season — was a compromise with the network. "The original messaging from the studio as we were done, they wanted us to be done after 4." He went on to add:

"We had made a commitment to the fan base, and to the narrative, that we would get right up against Tos [The Original Series], like we’d about it, because there are a lot...

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Delights Comic-Con With Upcoming Episode, Teases All-Puppet Installment
Image
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds boldly went exactly where fans wanted them to go with its San Diego Comic-Con panel, delivering a fun presentation that also gave the 6,500-strong crowd in the cavernous Hall H one thing that geeks most: seeing something before anyone else.

Fandom has always been an important aspect of Trek — the original show famously became a cultural force long after it went off the air after being canceled — and the showrunners made a point to give a nod to the fans.

“We think of you all the time when we are in the writers room and we always talk about what would the fans want and love,” said exec producer Akiva Goldsman.

The ensuing banter with the cast led to a Trekkie’s delight, a screening of the fourth episode of Strange New Worlds current third season, which doesn’t hit Paramount+ until next week. And...

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Reveals Captain Pike as a Puppet in Comic-Con Season 4 Teaser
Image
Captain Pike has been turned into a puppet in the new teaser for the fourth season of “Star Trek: Strange New World,” which was shared with fans at San Diego Comic Con Saturday.

“Hit it,” Muppet Pike says in the new video — “hit it” being the thing he says when he wants the ship to go to warp speed — before confusedly adding, “You heard me say hit it, right? Spock? Anyone?”

“Did you go to season four without me?” he adds.

The trailer appears to hint at an upcoming episode that will feature the cast as puppets. There might have been an unexpected and terrible transporter accident,” said executive producer Akiva Goldsman at Sdcc. “Which might have had some unexpected felt-like effects.”

The puppet episode is directed by Jordan Cannings, and the puppets were created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The series is produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout...

First 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 4 Teaser Boldly Turns Captain Pike Into... A Puppet?!
Image
A new teaser for the next season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds promises a Star Trek episode unlike any other. It offers a glimpse of Enterprise commander Captain Christopher Pike, who possesses the gravity-defying hair and dulcet tones of Anson Mount, but is otherwise...a puppet. The clip was revealed during the Star Trek panel at San Diego Comic-Con today. The fourth season of Strange New Worlds is now in production and is expected to be released next year on Paramount+.

The clip begins with dramatic music, focusing on the back of Pike's command chair on the Enterprise's bridge as it slowly pans around, revealing that the captain is now a somewhat hilarious puppet. His "hit it" catchphrase goes unheeded on the otherwise deserted bridge, and Pike soon becomes concerned that everyone else went to Season 4 without him. The Jim Henson-esque appearance of the puppet-Pike brings to mind "Smile Time,...

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Sneak Peek: Captain Pike Gets Puppet Treatment In Season 4 Clip — Comic-Con
Image
With Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds engaging in warp speed, fans at Comic-Con were treated to a sneak peek at Season 4.

During Saturday’s Star Trek universe presentation in Hall H, the Paramount+ series debuted a clip of Anson Mount‘s Captain Christopher Pike in puppet form as he commands the USS Enterprise in an upcoming episode from the fourth season, directed by Jordan Canning (Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock) with a full starship crew of puppets from Jim Henson‘s Creature Shop.

“Hit it,” says Pike as his puppet version is dramatically revealed in the captain’s chair, cuing the Season 4 title card before returning to the captain, breaking an awkward pause. “You heard me say hit it, right? Spock? Anyone? Did you go to Season 4 without me?”

In addition to the Season 4 clip, fans at Sdcc were also treated to a special advanced screening of...

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Teases Puppet Episode for Season 4
Image
“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is boldly going where no “Star Trek” show has gone before: to the world of puppets.

At the “Star Trek Universe” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the cast and executive producers of “Strange New Worlds” debuted a teaser for the fourth season of the series, which just finished production. It revealed Capt. Christopher Pike sitting on the captain’s chair of the Enterprise — but as a puppet.

“There might have been an unexpected and terrible transporter accident,” said executive producer Akiva Goldsman on the stage at Hall H. “Which might have had some unexpected felt-like effects.”

The puppets were created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop for the episode, which is directed by Jordan Canning (“Fragile Rock: Back to the Rock”). It’s in keeping with the “Strange New Worlds” approach of treating each episode as its own unique genre, including horror, screwball comedy, costume...

Strange New Worlds Season 3 Episode 3 Plunges Star Trek Straight Into The Last Of Us
Image
Watch out, redshirts! This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 3, "Shuttle to Kenfori."

"Star Trek" in general and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" in particular doesn't hesitate to draw inspiration from other genres. In fact, "Strange New Worlds" season 3 has now delivered two consecutive episodes that wink and nod to specific works of fiction. Episode 2, "Wedding Bell Blues," brought back William Campbell's child-like alien Trelane (now played by Rhys Darby of "Our Flag Means Death" fame) to pose as a wedding planner for the recently broken up Spock (Ethan Peck) and Chistine Chapel (Jess Bush). The antagonist resets the situation whenever Spock refuses to comply, thus locking the half-Vulcan in a loop that seems to pay homage to "Groundhog Day." Now, episode 3, titled "Shuttle to Kenfori," seems to riff on a far more recent pop culture phenomenon: HBO's post-apocalyptic juggernaut series "The Last of Us.

How Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Pays Off Season 2's Darkest Storyline
Image
Spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" follow.

One advantage of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" being a prequel to the original "Star Trek" is how it can have Klingon bad guys, no explanation needed.

The show is a spin-off of "Star Trek: Discovery," which followed the brief and brutal war between the Federation and Klingon Empire during its first season. "Strange New Worlds" retcons "Tos" characters Dr. Joseph M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) into Klingon War veterans. They specifically served together on the moon J'Gal, where M'Benga developed a steroid for Starfleet soldiers ("Protocol 12") and even took it himself. The infamous "Butcher of J'Gal" who killed some senior Klingons officers? That was actually M'Benga.

So M'Benga's Ptsd flared up in the "Strange New Worlds" season 2 "Under the Cloak of War" when the Enterprise had to escort Klingon ambassador Dak'Rah (Robert Wisdom). Dak'Rah, who defected to the Federation,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 episode 3 recap: Trek meets The Walking Dead
Image
After a light-hearted "wedding," Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 gets darker in episode 3, as a quest to save Batel involves Klingons, a troubled crew member, and the closest Star Trek has come to The Walking Dead!

Warning: Spoilers for Strange New Worlds season 3 episode 3 are below.

"Shuttle to Kenfori" opens with the Enterprise on a scouting mission as Pike notes Batel is about to leave for a new command. He finds her unconscious on the floor, with M'Benga revealing that the Gorn tissue is reforming in her body. Spock relates that there's a rare flower that may contain a compound that could remove the infection.

Of course, there's a problem as the flower can only be found on the planet Kenfori, which is in a "no-fly zone" left alone since the Earth-Klingon war. This means going in breaks various treaties, so they have to go in alone, with Pike volunteering to go with M'Benga.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds To Bring Back Paul Wesley - But Not as Kirk
Image
For Star Trekfans, there may not be a more popular character than James T. Kirk, memorably played in Star Trek: The Original Series by William Shatner. When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is a prequel to Tos, made its way to Paramount+, Paul Wesley, best known for The Vampire Diaries, stepped into the role of James T. Kirk.

Wesley’s Kirk would go on to be featured in three episodes during Strange New Worlds Season 2.According to TV Line, Wesley is set to return to the series in its fourth episode, but in a way that may surprise fans. "I can tell you that when Paul Wesley makes his Season 3 debut in Episode 4 (airing July 31), he's not exactly playing James T. Kirk," the publication's Matt Webb Mitovich said in response to a fan's question about the character.

"Instead, he's in an alternate reality as a frustrated actor on a 1960s sci-fi TV show…...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3: What Poem Is Spock Quoting To Nurse Chapel?
Image
In the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Wedding Bells Blues," Spock (Ethan Peck) awakens in bed next to Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) on the morning of their wedding. They are blissed out and happy to celebrate their nuptials, and they are eager to see all their friends dressed up at the ceremony.

This is a curious place for Spock to wake up, however, as the pair had never gotten engaged. Indeed, they recently announced that they would certainly not be pursuing a relationship, allowing Chapel to begin a relationship with a man maned Korby (Cillian O'Sullivan). As Spock will eventually learn, reality has shifted under him at the hands of a playful godlike being played by Rhys Darby. This godlike being has sensed that Spock and Chapel are into each other, and decided to use his powers to stage a wedding, erasing everyone's memories and forcing them to play-act a grand romance.

Strange New Worlds Season 3 Finally Reveals That A Certain Pop Song Still Exists In The Star Trek Universe
Image
The use of popular music from the late 20th century in "Star Trek" has always been a bit of a gamble, not least of all because it begs the question: Why did this particular song stand the test of time? It can also pull viewers out of the moment, creating a bit of cognitive dissonance as they suddenly find themselves hearing the sounds of the Beastie Boys or Wyclef Jean in the sci-fi world of "Star Trek." Other times, however, it can honestly be a lot of fun.

Case in point: In the wildly silly second episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, "Wedding Bell Blues," we discover that a very well-known 1980s pop song has endured well into the 23rd century, and the whole Enterprise crew gets to have a blast dancing to it. And while its inclusion might make some audience members roll their eyes or groan,...

'Star Trek: Snw' was the best thing I streamed this week
Image
The new season of “Strange New Worlds” picks up right where the previous season left off, offering thrilling adventure where no one has gone before.

If you’re anything like me, you watch a little more TV than is probably good for you. The upshot for me with this problem is that I have a platform to share my thoughts on the best titles I watch on a week-in, week-out basis with readers. Not only does this give me an outlet for my thoughts, but it hopefully can be a help to confused cord-cutters in a world where streaming services are constantly bombarding viewers with more and more titles.

With that in mind, I wanted to share the best title I streamed this week. As may come as no surprise to anyone who knows me (or read my bio), I picked the new season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Drops The Perfect Twilight Zone Reference
Image
Spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" to follow.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" sure loves to put Spock (Ethan Peck) in comedic situations. In season 1's "Spock Amok," he accidentally exchanged bodies with his fiancee T'Pring (Gia Sandhu) during a mind meld gone wrong. Then, in season 2's "Charades" (which /Film named the funniest "Star Trek" episode ever), Spock was transformed into a full-blooded human and had to relearn how to be a Vulcan.

Now, "Strange New Worlds" season 3 has unveiled its own comedic Spock adventure as part of its two-episode premiere. To do so, it's also brought back one of the campiest yet most powerful villains from "Star Trek: The Original Series."

In "Wedding Bell Blues" (helmed by "Charades" director Jordan Canning), Spock and Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) are getting married! Except, they previously broke up ... and Christine has just arrived on the Enterprise with her new boyfriend,...

Strange New Worlds Season 3 Gives Captain Pike A Moment We've Never Seen In Star Trek Before
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the season 3 premiere of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."

"Star Trek" always has a way of pushing its characters to the limit. Whether it be a physical threat on the level of the devouring Gorn, a profound difference in philosophy unspooling over the course of an entire episode, or something else altogether, there's no shortage of challenges and obstacles lurking in wait throughout each quadrant of the galaxy. Season 3 of "Strange New Worlds" picks up in the immediate aftermath of last season's cliffhanger finale and, by the end of the hour, comes up with an elaborate solution to explain why one of the franchise's biggest villains goes missing in the future. But though the Gorn may be gone, the scars they left behind remain. Indeed, Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) learns this in a moment we've never seen from him in "Star Trek" before.

Normally a man of science,...

Strange New Worlds Season 3 Has Some Of The Nastiest Gore In Star Trek History
Image
Watch out, captain! This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 1, "Hegemony, Part II."

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 2 ended with a massive cliffhanger, and "Hegemony, Part II" is tasked with solving things as well as it can. The Gorn are such a powerful threat that Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew can only score a technical knockout -- and even then, they have to harness the literal power of the stars to manipulate the Gorn hibernation cycle. As Pike aptly puts it, this merely creates an even bigger problem for someone later down the line.

The heart of "Hegemony, Part II" isn't the danger of a large-scale Gorn attack against the Federation, though. After all, the show's place in the franchise timeline confirms that this threat will be foiled. Instead, the episode's most impactful moments depict the Gorn's effect on individual characters, and...

An Adorable Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Scene Echoes One Of Tng's Most Amusing Subplots
Image
At the beginning of the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Wedding Bell Blues," the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is gearing up for a grand gala to celebrate the centennial of the formation of the Federation. The Enterprise has been under repair for the previous few months after a conflagration with the Gorn, so everyone has had time to relax. Spock (Ethan Peck), however, finds himself apprehensive; although he is a Vulcan devoted to emotionlessness, he finds that he is still harboring feelings for Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), currently away from the Enterprise on vacation. Chapel is due to return any day now, though, and Spock, perhaps illogically, is nervous.

To distract himself, he decides to prepare for the gala by learning to dance. Luckily, his co-worker, chief of security Lieutenant LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), has extensive dance training, and is more than willing to give him lessons.

How Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Avoids Breaking Canon With A Classic Tos Episode
Image
This article contains mild spoilers for the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Wedding Bell Blues."

In the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Wedding Bell Blues," Spock (Ethan Peck) finds himself growing despondent over the fact that he and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) may not be destined to date. Spock and Chapel spend several months apart, only for her to return with a new boyfriend, a charming scientist named Roger Korby (Cillian O'Sullivan). Spock is as heartbroken as a Vulcan can be.

There is a reception in a bar thereafter, and Spock finds himself feeling jealousy watching Chapel and Korby together. He walks over to the bartender (Rhys Darby), who notices his pain. The bartender gives him a strong cocktail, and Spock retires to his quarters. When he wakes up, reality has shifted. Chapel in his bed with him, smiling happily.
