Terrible Terror: ‘Atrocious’ Review
Welcome to a brand-new series here on Nerdly, Terrible Terror, in which we highlight some of, what we think, are the Worst horror movies to have ever burnt my retina with their atrociousness. Speaking of atrocious, here’s my review of that eponymous horror – which not only made it to UK DVD back in the day but also – somehow – screened at Frightfest London in 2011!

Stars: Cristian Valencia, Clara Moraleda, Chus Pereiro | Written and Directed by Fernando Barredo Luna

The feature film debut of writer/director Fernando Barredo Luna, Atrocious is the latest in the long-line of horror movies originating from Europe, in fact this one, like its more famous compatriot [Rec], comes from from Spain and one can’t help but compare the two – a little unfair perhaps, but given the films’ clear similarities it seems inevitable.

The premise is simple: it’s early 2010 and the Quintanilla family travel to an...

Atrocious (2010)
Directed by: Fernando Berreda Luna

Starring: Christian Valencia, Clara Moraleda, Chus Pereiro, Sergi Martin

One of the unfortunate side effects of Paranormal Activity is that all found footage films are now getting compared to it. Additionally these films however original and separate from Paranormal Activity they may be, are marketed to us in such a way that we are forced to draw the inevitable similarities anyways. This may not be such a bad thing for films that are similar to Paranormal Activity but in Atrocious' case, the comparisons are simply not warranted. While Atrocious may be a film in the style of Paranormal Activity and the Blair Witch Project---it ultimately has nothing to do with either of those films.

And this will upset some people.

On April 4th of 2010, Spanish police reported the discovery of 37 hours of recorded evidence that shed some new light on a gruesome murder investigation.

Spanish hand cam horror Atrocious: DVD Review
Director: Fernando Barreda Luna. Review: Adam Wing. Not only does the line “The mind is like a labyrinth, in which anyone can get lost” open Fernando Barreda Luna’s shaky-cam horror, it pretty much describes the entire plot of the movie. It would be too easy to rip a film called Atrocious to pieces, Luna has kind of opened himself up to attack on this one, but I’m happy to report that his Spanish thriller debut - a cross between The Blair Witch Project and Silent House - doesn’t quite live up to (or should that be down to) it’s critic baiting title. The Quintanilla family travel to their old farmhouse in Sitges, where Christian (Christian Valencia) and July (Clara Moraleda), two bored siblings, investigate the Legend of the Girl in the Garraf woods, using video cameras to record their findings – because it wouldn’t be a shaky-cam horror without them.

DVD Review: Atrocious
Atrocious

Stars: Cristian Valencia, Clara Moraleda, Chus Pereiro | Written and Directed by Fernando Barredo Luna

After receiving its UK premiere at this years London Film4 FrightFest, found-footage horror Atrocious makes its way to DVD courtesy of the fine folks at Revolver Entertainment. The feature film debut of writer/director Fernando Barredo Luna, Atrocious is the latest in the long-line of horror movies originating from Europe to hit the UK, in fact this one, like its more famous compatriot [Rec], comes from from Spain and one can’t help but compare the two – a little unfair perhaps, but given the films’ clear similarities it seems inevitable.

The premise is simple: it’s early 2010 and the Quintanilla family travel to an old rural family farmhouse near Sitges (itself famous for its horror film festival ironically), for the the Easter holidays. To pass the time, teenage siblings Christian and July set about investigating the...

This week's new films
30 Minutes Or Less (15)

(Ruben Fleischer, 2011, Us) Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride. 83 mins

After the heights of The Social Network, Eisenberg is demoted to a lowly pizza delivery boy for this casual caper movie. He's driven to rob banks at the behest of McBride's criminal non-mastermind, with buddy Ansari roped in for comic effect. In fact, comic effect seems to be all this is after. Like a dodgy pizza, it's enjoyable at the time but nutritionally dubious, a bit thin, and just about gone cold by the time it's finished.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (15)

(Thomas Alfredson, 2011, UK/Fra/Ger) Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch. 127 mins

A very British spy thriller that dispenses with all that hasty pacing and coarse action in favour of well-tailored men talking in rooms. A complex, classy cold war mole-hunt that demands attention, but rewards it richly.

I Don't Know How She Does It (12A)

(Douglas McGrath,...
