Though The Conjuring Universe will continue with "Phase 2", September's The Conjuring: Last Rites is being marketed as the final instalment in the main series of movies that began back in 2013 with James Wan's original supernatural shocker.
This time, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are convinced to come out of retirement to look into the infamous Smurl family haunting.
"It is one of the more Googleable ones," producer Peter Safran tells EW. "It really fit the bill for us, being able to lean into something that audiences could go and Google after the movie. 'Oh! They really did have that many children.' 'Oh! They really were this age, and the grandparents really were there.' All of that stuff has always been meaningful to us."

It’s the end of the era with the upcoming arrival of The Conjuring: Last Rites. The first two-minute teaser is incredibly disturbing and seems to signal that phase one of the franchise is going out with a horrifying bang.
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren for likely the last time. Mia Tomlinson plays Judy Warren, Ben Hardy is Tony Spera, and Steve Coulter is Father Gordon. The cast also includes Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadsdon, John Brotherton, and Shannon Kook.
James Wan directed the first two The Conjuring films, and Michael Chaves directed 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Chaves returns to direct this ninth entry overall in the franchise. Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick wrote the screenplay, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Natalia Safran, John Rickard, Hans Ritter, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick executive producing.

Up until this week, we didn’t have any plot info on The Conjuring: Last Rites, but Entertainment Weekly was finally able to draw some information out of the filmmakers. They shared that the film is set in 1986, five years after the events of The Devil Made Me Do It. The Warrens have retired from the exorcist business, largely due to Ed’s heart attack, the one sustained during the demonic happenings of the third film. They still hit the university circuit, presenting talks at various schools, but even those opportunities are drying up.

Ed and Lorraine Warren have one final case to crack in the iconic “The Conjuring” franchise. The paranormal investigating duo, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, first appeared onscreen in 2013; now 12 years and a slew of spinoff films later, the original “The Conjuring” will close out with “The Conjuring: The Last Rites.”
Michael Chaves returns to direct “The Last Rites.” In total, the franchise has three “Conjuring” films, three “Annabelle” features, two “Nun” movies, and “The Curse of La Llorona.” Chaves helmed “La Llorona,” “The Nun II,” and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.” A “Conjuring” series is in development at Max as well.
“The Last Rites” is set in the mid-1980s when the Warrens were retired. However, the couple returns for one last case involving the Smurl family. The Warrens most famously investigated the 1976 hauntings in Amityville, New York, which inspired the “Amityville Horror” franchise.

Haunted dolls in horror make for a perfect mix of the occult and the mundane. An everyday object, or toy to be precise, can be responsible for terrors unimaginable once it assumes a life of its own in ways that cannot be explained or articulated. The Conjuring Universe often hinges itself on haunted everyday objects and occurrences, but the Annabelle doll serves as the foundation for a franchise that revolves around the dramatized lives of paranormal researchers Ed and Lorraine Warren. These fictionalized cases, which are allegedly based on actual paranormal activity investigated by the real Warrens, generally deal with evil entities, and Annabelle's introduction to the big screen helped these films gain mainstream attention and balloon into the massive horror franchise we know and love today.

Netflix's 28 Days Haunted puts a theory by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren to the test to communicate with spirits. Though the series has yet to be renewed for season 2, hosts Aaron Sagers and Tony Spera end the series, stating their desire to investigate new locations to prove the Warren's theory and capture proof of the paranormal.
However, between the questionable evidence and convenient camera angles of season 1, Redditors simply cannot take the show seriously. During investigations at the Lumbar Baron Inn, Captain Grant's Inn, and Madison Dry Goods, small details have garnered hilarious reactions from viewers.
Phones In Isolation
At the beginning of the series, the investigators are blindfolded and hand over their cell phones as they are meant to be completely isolated from the outside world. A voiceover claims they have no access to the outside world, with their computers not being connected to the internet.

Last year, for the first edition of their "Paranormal Reserve," Harridan Vodka aged 60 bottles at three of the most haunted locations in the United States. I was fortunate enough to purchase The Conjuring House bottle last year and, on top of being an excellent vodka, the bottle and packaging were perfect for Halloween festivities! I've been excited to see what was planned for this Halloween and Harridan Vodka did not disappoint, announcing their best paranormally-aged release to date! “Paranormal Reserve - Annabelle Edition,” a limited collection that rested right next to Annabelle for 30 days, is now available, with a portion of the proceeds going to a great cause!

When a child grows up with famous parents, it means dealing with overly eager fans, and invasive reporters. But for Judy Spera, the daughter of Ed and Lorraine Warren, arguably the most well-known paranormal investigators ever, growing up with famous parents also meant dealing with dark forces, and one notoriously haunted doll.
Spera was an adult in her twenties by the time her parents gained mainstream attention for their work with the paranormal in the mid-70s. But before the Lindley Street Poltergeist case in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1974, or the Amityville Horror, and long before The Conjuring film franchise, Spera’s parents sold Ed’s artwork, and carved out a decent life for their daughter. But before the Lindley Street Poltergeist case in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1974, or the Amityville Horror, and long before The Conjuring film franchise, Spera’s parents sold Ed’s artwork, and carved out a decent life for their daughter. Ed grew up in a haunted house, and Lorraine was a clairvoyant, and though they had explored unexplained phenomena for years, theirs was a normal existence compared to the talk show appearances, lectures across the globe,...

No, the Annabelle doll has not escaped and has not taken a first class trip or gone to see her boyfriend, as (panicked) Twitter fans joked on Friday.
Tony Spera, the son-in-law of famous paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, took to YouTube on Friday to address the rumors that the infamous doll escaped her glass enclosure at the Occult Museum. The report stemmed from her Wikipedia entry where someone had added that Annabelle escaped on Aug. 14 at 3 a.m.
“I’m here to tell you something, I don’t know if you want to hear this or not, but Annabelle did not escape,” he said. “Annabelle’s alive — well, I shouldn’t say alive — Annabelle’s here, in all her infamous glory. She never left the museum.”

The real-life Annabelle doll did not escape from Warren's Occult Museum. Paranormal enthusiasts were shocked to hear rumors of the doll's escape earlier this morning, which instantly started trending on social media. However, there are still people believe that Annabelle is currently haunting the East Coast, and even though the rumor has been debunked, it certainly seems like something that 2020 would deliver. We've seen nuclear cannibal ants, murder hornets, and prehistoric hell ants, along with a massive public health crisis. A haunted doll sounds right on brand for 2020.
It's unclear where the Annabelle escaping the Warren's Occult Museum rumor stemmed from exactly, but many believe that it was a Wikipedia prank. Anyone can go in and edit articles, so that makes sense. Others believe that the story came from a recent interview with British actress Annabelle Wallis who is making her own headlines for her comments on Tom Cruise and running.

The Conjuring movies have popularized the work of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, which extends far further than the few instances seen in the films. Over the years, the pair have amassed a large collection of objects purportedly infused with supernatural evil, and one such artifact, a unique creation called the Doll of Shadows, has recently been shown off in a video from the Warren Occult Museum.
Filmed by Tony Spera, the museum’s director, the doll is shown under a red light and revealed in all its grotesque glory. Named for the black clothing in which it’s swathed, ragged bird feathers are used for its hair, and human bone and nails have been utilized in its construction. Most notably, a single human tooth protrudes prominently from its mouth.

Hard to tell if it’s more paralegal than paranormal but something is definitely haunting The Conjuring franchise Warner Bros is trying to create. Today the studio and its New Line division were among the defendants named in another breach of contract lawsuit by producer Tony DeRosa-Grund and his Evergreen Media. This time 87-year-old Lorraine Warren herself, whose investigations into the seemingly supernatural with her late husband were the basis for last year’s thriller, was also listed as a defendant. Filed in federal court in Texas like last month’s suit, today’s complaint (read it here) seeking a jury trial also wants to stop any sequels going forward; a declaratory judgment of rights; and a series of unspecified actual, punitive and statutory damages likely to run into the millions. And what does the other side say? “We have not been served,” a WB spokesman told me today.
