Benson Boone Covers ‘Seventeen Going Under’ After Sam Fender Misses Festival Over Vocal Injury
Image
A hemorrhaged vocal cord kept Sam Fender from taking the stage at Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival for his headlining performance. But the injury proved to be beneficial for Benson Boone, who was bumped up to the headlining tier in his place. It wasn’t an exact one-to-one parallel, but the Fender fans in the audience still got to hear “Seventeen Going Under” live — just not from its original singer.

“He’s an artist that I look up to and an artist I think is incredibly talented, but did anyone...

Florence Road Are Headed for Stardom and Having Fun While They’re At It
Image
In the charming coastal town of Bray in County Wicklow, Ireland, there’s a stretch of pavement called Florence Road. It’s pretty average, as far as roads go, with quaint houses, a library, a vet, a dollar store, and several coffee shops scattered across it. “It’s not that cute,” jokes drummer Hannah Kelly. “You wouldn’t know walking past that it’s remarkable by any means,” says bassist Ailbhe Barry. “But it’s meaningful to us.”

Florence Road carries so much significance that Kelly, Barry, lead singer Lily Aron,...

Ed Sheeran Makes Surprise Appearance At BBC Music Festival In Liverpool
Image
Throughout yesterday, rumours had circulated that “a big name” would be appearing on stage at the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend Festival in Liverpool.

Nevertheless, fans were surprised and thrilled by the un-billed appearance of Ed Sheeran on stage on Saturday afternoon.

The bestselling artist was making his fifth appearance at the festival, last performing in 2022.

Sheeran’s decision to appear on the New Music Stage came because, the BBC reported, “he felt it had the best energy.”

However, this meant he eschewed the main stage at the event, and the smaller crowd capacity meant many fans were left disappointed that they couldn’t get to see one of the UK’s biggest international stars perform.

Sheeran has sold an estimated 200million records since his debut album was released in 2011 and won four Grammy Awards for his work, including Best Pop Solo Performance for 2018’s Shape of You. His work includes collaborations with artists Taylor Swift,...

Inside the 2025 Brit Awards: Sabrina Carpenter Shocks, Millie Bobby Brown Gushes, Tender Liam Payne Tribute Leaves Arena Still
Image
On a chilly east London evening at the 2025 Brit Awards, U.S. native Sabrina Carpenter opened the night flanked by the King’s Guard.

As always, the “Short n’ Sweet” star dazzled with a sparkling corset bodysuit, impeccable vocals and salacious dance moves (so salacious, in fact, that viewers threatened to complain to the country’s communications regular, Ofcom). Renditions of Espresso and Bed Chem were aptly anglicized by giant union jacks cascading either side of the O2 Arena stage.

The Hollywood Reporter was seated at the U.K.’s biggest music awards show. Later on in the night, Carpenter received the Brits’ first-ever global success award. “In a very primarily tea-drinking country you guys streamed the shit out of Espresso,” she laughed. “And you’ve really understood my dry sense of humor because your sense of humor is so dry. So, I love y’all more than you even understand.

All eyes and ears in London were on the Brit Awards 2025 on Saturday night, with Charli Xcx leaving the 45th edition of the ceremony with four newly won trophies, plus a fifth previously announced one, and Chappell Roan receiving two honors. The Brit Awards, presented by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), took place at the O2 Arena, honoring the best in British and international music.

Charli Xcx had entered the evening leading the nominations with five, while Dua Lipa, The Last Dinner Party and Ezra Collective received four nominations each.

Hosting the ceremony was Jack Whitehall, who met Squid Game Soldiers, aka Triangles, in a video intro and joked about being a Taylor Swift fan.

Late in the show, Whitehall struck a much more somber note when he introduced a special video tribute to Liam Payne. He called the late One Direction star “a very special person who meant so...

Sam Fender Has the Working-Class Rock-Star Blues
Image
To quote the Smiths, fame fame fatale fame, it can play hideous tricks on the brain. That’s what’s happening in the album-opening title track from People Watching, the third LP by U.K. pop-rock star Sam Fender. “I people watch on the way back home/Envious of the glimmer of hope/Gives me a break from feeling alone,” he sings over the kind of hungry-hearted neo-Springsteen rock that is his sonic safety zone, before clarifying further, “I used to feel so invincible/I used to feel there was a world worth dreaming of.

The British singer-songwriter has no previous Grammy nominations, but he’s a hit in his native country, with his two previous albums Hypersonic Missiles and Seventeen Going Under both topping the charts and going platinum in the U.K. He hasn’t quite caught on in the U.S. yet. The 30-year-old rocker peaked at No. 12 on Billboard‘s Heatseekers Albums chart for new and developing artists with Missiles, and he has placed two songs on the Hot Rock and Alternative Songs chart, but he has otherwise kept a low profile on this side of the Atlantic. That said, he has been embraced by music journalists: People Watching has a Metacritic score of 90 based on the first six reviews counted.

Here are eight new albums to stream today.

Abdomen — Yes, I Don’t Know

Abdomen are a Dutch power trio who come through with washed-out, angular indie rock. Today, they return with their sophomore effort, Yes, I Don’t Know. The new tunes are off-kilter and engaging, leaning hard on repetition and dynamics to foster an unpredictable and exciting tone.

Andrew Scott Is Fueled by Grief in Sam Fender ‘People Watching’ Video

Andrew Scott goes searching for flickers of the past at the bottom of a bottle and the end of a cigarette in the music video for “People Watching,” the title track on Sam Fender’s forthcoming third studio album.

In the Stuart A. McIntyre-directed clip, the Irish actor wakes up in the middle of the sidewalk and begins a lonely journey towards nowhere. He hitches a ride in the back of a pickup truck, drinks bad coffee at desolate diners, and smokes at the bar in between crying sessions.

The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn Announces New Album, Shares New Song “People of Substance”: Stream
Image
Craig Finn, longtime frontman of The Hold Steady, has announced Always Been, his sixth studio album set for release on April 4th. He’s also shared a new song, “People of Substance.”

Always Been was produced by Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs, and features guest vocals from Kathleen Edwards and Sam Fender. Various members of The War on Drugs also play on the album, which was produced in Granduciel’s Burbank, California studio.

“I believe this to be the most narrative record I have made,” Craig Finn said in a statement. “Most songs concern a protagonist who pursued a career as a clergyman despite a lack of faith. The record tells the story of his rise and fall and redemption, while also filling out the details of his travels and the world in which he lives. I am very proud of what we made, I hope you enjoy.

The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn is back with a new song, “People of Substance,” from his next solo album, Always Been, out April 4 on Tarmac Recordings/Thirty Tigers.

The new track is vintage Finn in many ways, especially when it comes to the musician’s distinct vocal delivery and lyrics as he sings from the perspective of a flailing guy trying to make good, while also looking for excuses: “I decided I’m gonna push forward/I’m committed to making the change/But you got to remember I...

Rod Stewart Chosen For Coveted Glastonbury Festival “Legend” Slot
Image
Rod Stewart will play the coveted “Legend” slot at the 2025 Glastonbury festival, joining an impressive roster of previous “legends” – from Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones to James Brown and David Bowie – who performed at “tea time” on Sunday at the famed British music fest.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that I’ll be playing @glastofest 2025!,” Stewart posted on Instagram (see it below). “After all these years, I’m proud and ready and more than able to take the stage again to pleasure and titillate my friends at Glastonbury in June. I’ll see you there!”

Stewart last played Glastonbury in 2002, headlining with Coldplay and Stereophonics. Today’s news – which makes Stewart the only performer to ever have both headlined the fest and performed in the Legend slot – arrives shortly after the 79-year-old Stewart announced that he will retire from “large-scale world tours” at the end of 2025.

Mark Knopfler has teamed up with a host of fellow guitar legends to record a version of his song “Going Home (Theme from Local Hero)” to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America.

The Dire Straits frontman tapped Eric Clapton, Slash (Guns N’ Roses), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Brian May (Queen), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Pete Townshend (The Who), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Bruce Springsteen, Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones), Joan Jett, and many more, forming what he has dubbed “Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes.” Notably, the star-studded version opens with the final recorded guitar track by the late Jeff Beck.

Knopfler’s longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher handled the production of the track, which might be the greatest assemblage of guitar talent to co-exist on a single song. The Sgt. Pepper‘s-style artwork was created by Sir Peter Blake.

Noah Kahan Releases New Version of “Homesick” with Sam Fender: Stream
Image
Noah Kahan is back with the latest Stick Season re-release: a fresh cut of “Homesick” featuring a new verse from Sam Fender.

First announced earlier this week, the augmented version of “Homesick” follows a series of duet cuts Kahan has shared commemorating the one-year anniversary of Stick Season’s 2022 release, including collaborations with Gracie Abrams, Hozier, Kacey Musgraves, Lizzy McAlpine, and Post Malone.

Now, the duet version of “Homesick” builds upon the nostalgic reflection of the original thanks to a new verse from Fender, detailing his upbringing in Newcastle, England. In lengthy press statements, the artists explained how the collaboration grew out of a mutual respect that they had for each other.

“I come from a very different place than Sam did… but it felt like I had grown up the same,” Kahan said. “The nostalgia, pride, bitterness, confusion, and anger that Sam wrote about feeling was so similar to...

Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son | Documentary about homelessness gets a February release date
Lorna Tucker
Lorna Tucker’s documentary about homelessness and ways to help end it will be heading to UK cinemas in February.

Director Lorna Tucker has turned her own experiences of homelessness into a touching, rousing documentary. Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son is heading to UK screens 16 February 2024 and arguably, it’s exactly the film we need right now as we face an unprecedented housing crisis. The film is narrated by Colin Firth.

But the future didn’t always look too bright for Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son. The team had to crowdfund in order to secure a theatrical release and they’ve now hit that milestone. Their Kickstarter campaign met the £30 000 goal just recently and Sam Fender, Adam Buxton and Bryan Adams, who wrote a song for the film, are among some of the project’s supporters.

There’s a trailer for Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son too,...

Sam Fender forced to stop Leeds Music Festival due to medical emergencies
Image
Popular English alternative rock and indie sensation Sam Fender was forced to cancel his Leeds Music Festival set multiple times due to medical emergencies in the crowd. Telling the crowd to calm down, the 29-year-old singer stopped his set on August 26 evening as a fan required medical help in the crowd, telling the packed audience: “We need some help over here, let’s stop.”

He went on to ask: “You ok? We need help over here – we’re going to have to calm down,” mirror.co.uk reported.

A source at The Mirror added: “We’re not sure what happened but Sam acted very quickly and made sure that nothing happened until the medics and security got the fan out of the crowd.”

The incident took place after the award-winning singer-songwriter performed ‘Spice’ for the delighted sea of fans hanging on his every word in Yorkshire. “Well we’ve got...

AC/DC’s Brian Johnson Joins Sam Fender Onstage for “Back in Black” and “You Shook Me All Night Long”: Watch
Image
UK singer-songwriter Sam Fender played the second of two homecoming concerts on Saturday (June 10th) in Newcastle, and he was joined by a special guest for the occasion: AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson.

Johnson took the stage for renditions of the AC/DC classics “Back in Black” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.” Both tunes are from 1980’s iconic Back in Black album, the band’s first LP featuring Johnson, after he replaced the late Bon Scott.

Considering AC/DC haven’t performed since 2016, a cameo from Johnson is a rare occurrence. Fender and company were up for the moment, knocking out joyful, rousing renditions (as seen in fan footage of the concert).

Johnson, in particular, seemed to relish being onstage once again. Back in 2016, he was forced to step away from AC/DC’s US tour due to hearing loss and was famously replaced by Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses.

Glastonbury’s all-male headliners reveal a UK music industry in crisis
Image
Emily Eavis’s latest Glastonbury headliner announcement felt like an apology. Usually, organisers have fun by hiding clues near Worthy Farm – a poster in a charity shop window revealing Stormzy’s Pyramid Stage slot in 2019, for instance, or a mysterious “crop circle” for Radiohead in 2017. This time, though, Eavis’s announcement was made via a discussion about the fact that 2023’s headliners are male, all-white, all over again. Guns N’ Roses, Arctic Monkeys, Elton John.

As the news broke, music fans on social media swiftly began questioning why Lana Del Rey or Lizzo weren’t headlining over one of the current trio. “[Lizzo] could totally headline,” Eavis said of the Grammy-winning artist, who is playing two shows at London’s O2 Arena this month. “Many of the artists could. But the headline slot had already been promised to someone else.”

Lizzo would be a superb headliner. At the Brit Awards (which...

Awards ceremonies like the Brits can always do better, but by now they’re just an excuse for a party
Image
There was a five-headed elephant in the room at what was otherwise a strangely flat affair at the Brit Awards. As is tradition with music ceremonies, a row flared up over representation after the nominations were announced. The gender-neutral Artist of the Year category was entirely made up of male artists: Central Cee, Fred Again, George Ezra, Harry Styles and Stormzy.

The switch from gendered categories was implemented in 2021 after Sam Smith – who came out as non-binary two years earlier – urged awards shows to be “reflective of the society we live in”. At the first non-gendered awards show in 2022, Adele walked away with the Artist of the Year prize, for which Little Simz, Sam Fender, Dave and Ed Sheeran had also been nominated.

Women fared well across the board, with Olivia Rodrigo winning Best International Song, Wolf Alice taking home the British Group prize, Becky Hill for British Dance Act,...

Lewis Capaldi Unveils Music Video for New Single “Pointless” – Watch It Here & See 2023 EU and UK Tour Dates!
Image
Global superstar Lewis Capaldi unveiled yesterday the heartfelt music video for his new single, the piano-led “Pointless” – taken from his brand new record Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent – out May 19th, 2023.

Relatability sits at the core of Capalid’s artistry, and the new music video is another perfect example of this. Directed by Hector Dockrill the beautifully cinematic video follows the relationship, and unconditional bond between a mother (played by Niamh Algar) and her son (played by George Jaques), navigating their way through meandering moments of adolescence and adulthood.

The return of Lewis Capaldi has been characteristically disruptive, in the most exciting way. December 12, 2022 – Sam Fender is very pleased to release a new live album, Live From Finsbury Park. The album captures Sam’s scintillating sell-out performance in front of 45,000 fans earlier this Summer in London.
