Kinshasa Makambo review – gripping account of Congo’s fight for democracy
Courageous and absorbing film follows three young men in the resistance movement in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Chronicling what was supposed to be the final chapter of Joseph Kabila’s presidency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this is a stark and gripping portrait of a country in the throes of a major political crisis. At the centre of these monumental events are Christian, Jean-Marie and Ben, three young Congolese men who are passionately fighting for democracy, yet in their differing ideologies also embody the fractures that exist inside the resistance movement against Kabila’s unconstitutional clutch on power.

Jean-Marie, who like Ben was once jailed and tortured by the police, has faith in Udps, the opposition party led by Étienne Tshisekedi, and trusts them to call for a fair and legal election once Kabila’s term comes to an end. In contrast, Christian considers the Udps...

Dieudo Hamadi Introduces His Film "Kinshasa Makambo"
Image
The series Kinshasa Calling: A Dieudo Hamadi Double Bill is playing on Mubi in many countries starting on September 13, 2021.When you have abilities that others don’t have, skills, tools, to witness a drama, a tragedy, you can’t stay silent. In 2015, when I decided to make the film, the repression against young Congolese people fighting for the establishment of democracy in our country had reached worrying proportions. Any action, any word “hostile to the regime,” either in public space or on social networks, the slightest protest movement, was violently repressed. The government seemed determined to silence these Congolese who were striving for change by all means. It all started in 2011, when President Kabila, in power since 2001, was elected for a second term after a vote marred by massive fraud. The street was torn by violence immediately after the publication of the results. But the extremely violent repression that followed struck down the protests.

Kabilan and Rangan Vathiyar memes flood the internet: Here are our picks
Image
Kollywood The shot of Kabilan and Rangan Vaathiyaar riding the cycle has been a particularly popular choice.Bharathy SingaravelNot only has Pa Ranjith’s Sarpatta Parmabarai been hugely successful with audiences and critics alike, it’s also inspired a large number of internet spin-offs as memes and Instagram reels. Young people with barely any props have been single-handedly enacting dialogues of multiple characters and tagging the lead star, Arya, who has good-naturedly retweeted many of them. Recreating scenes from films, very often as lip sync videos, is common on Tamil social media handles. Originally on Tik-Tok and later on Reels, these short videos have a dedicated following. Our timelines are full of Sarpatta memes right now. The shot of Kabilan and Rangan Vaathiyaar riding the cycle has been a particularly popular choice. Other iconic moments from the film have also found their way in to the meme world. So, we...

George Clooney and John Prendergast's Sentry Exposes North Korea Sanctions-Busting Scandal
Image
Evading the international sanctions designed to disrupt its nuclear weapons program, North Korea exploited vulnerabilities in certain parts of the banking sector of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Drc) to gain access to the global financial system, leading to a clear violation of US, EU, and Un sanctions, The Sentry reveals in its latest investigative report, “Overt Affairs.”

George Clooney, Co-Founder of The Sentry, said: “Don’t think for a second that corruption and money laundering in a place like the Democratic Republic of Congo doesn’t impact international security. When banks fail to fulfill basic compliance requirements – and when governments turn a blind eye – organized crime and terror financing will always flourish.”

The Sentry, co-founded by George Clooney and John Prendergast, is an investigative and policy team that follows the dirty money connected to African war criminals and transnational war profiteers. In previous investigative reports, The Sentry has exposed...

George Clooney-Backed Investigative Org Exposes North Korean Banking Scandal In Dr Congo
Image
The Sentry, the George Clooney-supported investigative team that follows the dirty money connected to African war criminals and transnational war profiteers, has published a report it says exposes North Korea’s exploitation of vulnerabilities in the Dr Congo banking system to escape sanctions and access the global financial system.

Clooney co-founded the org with John Prendergast and the actor donated $1M towards its work back in 2017.

“Don’t think for a second that corruption and money laundering in a place like the Democratic Republic of Congo doesn’t impact international security,” said Clooney. “When banks fail to fulfill basic compliance requirements – and when governments turn a blind eye – organized crime and terror financing will always flourish.”

Titled Overt Affairs, the report claims to expose “a cascade of due diligence failures, compounded by entrenched corruption involving allies of former Drc President Joseph Kabila”, and shine a light on how two...
