This Underrated Live-Action Remake Is A Must-Watch For How To Train Your Dragon Fans
Image
Disney has been producing live-action remakes of some of their most beloved animated films for quite some time, but this practice has particularly dominated the studio's ambitions since 2010, when "Alice in Wonderland" grossed over $1 billion. Since then, we have had films of varying quality hit theaters, with a few highlights including "Cinderella" and "The Jungle Book," both showcasing their share of cinematic merits. But for the most part, films like "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin," and "The Lion King" may have been $1 billion hits, but failed to add anything worthwhile to these beloved stories. Not to mention, returns are diminishing with recent releases such as Rob Marshall's "The Little Mermaid" and Marc Webb's "Snow White" failing to make waves financially, although the runaway box office smash that is "Lilo and Stitch" may breathe some life back into the practice, for better or worse.

Universal is the latest studio...

Alicia Hannah-Kim's 10 Best Movies & TV Shows Ranked

Alicia Hannah-Kim has been working steadily in movies and television for years, and her hard work has begun to pay off in the 2020s with some major roles in notable shows and movies. Born in Sydney, Australia, Hannah-Kim began her acting career in 2003, with a small role in White Collar Blue. Parts came somewhat slowly for Hannah-Kim afterward, and she only appeared in minor roles or as unnamed characters for the next few years. However, every once in a while, she would score a memorable part in a popular show like Grey's Anatomy.

Over the 2010s, the Korean Australian actress has built an ever-growing resume, appearing in more movies and TV shows every year, usually in more substantial parts. In the 2020s, it appears that Hannah-Kim has finally broken into some real stardom with significant parts in shows like Minx and Cobra Kai. In her personal life, Hannah-Kim married Sebastian...

Oakes Fegley began his career at a very young age and has quickly become one of the most notable child actors in TV or movies, and he isn't slowing down as he enters young adulthood. 10 Great Sci-Fi Shows Like Orphan Black: Echoes

Orphan Black: Echoes is AMC's latest installment in the Orphan Black universe, as the new sci-fi TV show takes place in the future after the events of the original series conclude. The show follows the grown-up Kira, Sarah's daughter in Orphan Black, and Lucy, the young woman she becomes entangled with. Maybe Reconsider: Apple TV+ Sci-Fi Show Gets Mixed Reaction From VFX Artists For Key Scene Choice

VFX artists had mixed reviews on the snow scene in Dark Matter, praising the rendering of the snow but critiquing the fluffy appearance. Season 2 of Dark Matter will introduce more challenging VFX with new and existing universes explored by the characters. Characters in Dark Matter may have to spend more time in stranger universes in season 2 due to unpredictable dangers.

Dark Matter receives mixed reviews from VFX artists when breaking down an important scene. This piece will examine how Blake Crouch has set up a second season of the mindbending, time-space-defying sci-fi hit drama Dark Matter. To best understand all the breadcrumbs and hints, we will definitely want to look closely at everything that happened in the finale of Season 1 (specifically in the final 10 minutes), which is currently available to stream on Apple TV+ in the U.S. The critically lauded genre mash-up that details the bizarre events in the life of David Dessen (Joel Edgerton), his wife Daniela Dessen (Jennifer Connelly), and his son Charlie (Oakes Fegley) takes an unexpected twist at the end that left audiences dying for a second season. Thankfully, we now know that it is happening. Several questions involve the solid supporting cast, including Alice Braga, Jimmie Simpson, and Dayo Okeniyi. Our Biggest Unanswered Questions After Dark Matter Season 1
Image
For a show like Apple TV+'s Dark Matter, which deals with the fabric of quantum physics and the time-space continuum, it might be more efficient to ask, "What question do we not have?" after a taut and thrilling first season. The Blake Crouch series based on his novel has a fabulous cast with Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, and Oakes Fegley, and they all bring their A-games to a sci-fi, family drama mash-up directed by Jakub Verbruggen. Every main character and even the supporting players have an open-ended storyline as the Dessen family ventures away from the world that they know. It is no longer possible for them to stay as with so many Jasons running around trying to take the original Jasons life, their lives would be in great danger. Collider's Steve Weintraub got some great interviews with some of the cast members to...

Dark Matter Is Getting A Second Season On Apple TV+, But What Could It Be About?
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Dark Matter."

I recently finished reading Blake Crouch's mind-bending sci-fi novel "Dark Matter," which was adapted into an Apple TV+ show earlier this year. I haven't watched the show yet (I'm planning to catch up with it shortly), but we've called it "the best sci-fi series in years" and that praise makes sense, considering the show is apparently a very faithful adaptation of the largely excellent book. Last Friday, Apple announced that the show will be getting a second season -- a somewhat curious decision, given that the book ends in a place where they easily could have delivered a satisfying story and called it a day.

At the end of the novel, the unwitting multiverse traveler Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton in the show) finally manages to reunite with his real family in his original universe, but he and his wife (Jennifer Connelly...

Dark Matter Season 2 Renewed On Apple TV+ Less Than 2 Months After Finale
Image
Apple TV+ has renewed Dark Matter season 2. The science fiction show was created by Blake Crouch based on his own novel. The show stars Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly.

Dark Matter has been officially renewed. The Apple TV+ show, which was created by Blake Crouch, is based on Crouch's science fiction novel of the same name, which was published in 2016. It stars Joel Edgerton as physicist Jason Dessen, who is kidnapped into an alternate reality by a different version of himself. The cast of the show also includes Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, and Oakes Fegley. Because the show is based on a self-contained novel, Dark Matter season 2 was not always a guarantee.

Apple TV+ has announced that they have renewed Dark Matter season 2. This news comes less than two months after the season 1 finale on June 26. Blake Crouch has also confirmed the renewal on his official X account.

‘Dark Matter’ Renewed for Second Season at Apple TV+
Image
Apple TV+, which has built out a sizable lineup of sci-fi series, is doubling down on one of those shows.

The streamer has renewed Dark Matter, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, for a second season. The pickup comes not quite two months after the show’s nine-episode first season concluded in late June.

Dark Matter, from Sony Pictures TV, is based on a best-selling novel by Blake Crouch, who also serves as showrunner on the series. Edgerton stars as Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor and family man who, while walking home in Chicago, is abducted into an alternate version of his life and has to piece together how to get back — and who’s trying to prevent him from doing so. Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley also star.

‘Dark Matter’ Renewed For Season 2 At Apple TV+
Image
Apple TV+ viewers might get the chance to finally find out how Dark Matter’s interdimensional travel works and which universe the main characters ended up in after the streamer renewed the sci-fi drama for a second season.

The tech company has handed Dark Matter, which stars Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, a sophomore season after its nine-episode, first season ended in June.

However, Blake Crouch, author of the book that the series is based on and creator, showrunner and executive producer of the series, will have to come up with new stories as there is no source material on the bookstands.

Dark Matter, which comes from Sony Pictures Television, follows Jason Dessen, (played by Edgerton), a physicist, professor and family man who, one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago, is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries...

Apple's Mind-Bending Multiverse Drama Is The Best Sci-Fi Series In Years
Image
(Welcome to Under the Radar, a column where we spotlight specific movies, shows, trends, performances, or scenes that caught our eye and deserved more attention ... but otherwise flew under the radar. In this edition: the high-concept Apple TV+ original series "Dark Matter," the Lily Gladstone-starring indie "Fancy Dance," and the South Korean horror movie "Exhuma" stood out from the pack in June.)

Have rumors of cinema's demise been greatly exaggerated? I make no claims about understanding the fine art of box office prognostication, preferring to leave that to the experts who actually know what they're talking about (such as /Film's very own Ryan Scott). But after months of doom and gloom over general audiences failing to show up for several high-profile movies in relatively short order, it was difficult not to fear the worst and chalk up 2024 to another lost year for moviegoers and theater owners alike. The past few weeks,...

I Hope Dark Matter Never Addresses The Finale's Best Jason Mystery
Image
Spoilers are ahead for Dark Matter (2024) season 1.

Dark Matter's ambiguous finale leaves the audience questioning which Jason ends up with Daniela, reflecting the show's themes of infinite possibilities and identity. The showrunner confirms the intention was to follow the same Jason Dessen, but the open-ended conclusion adds depth to the philosophical questions raised. Some argue that Dark Matter should remain a one-off limited series, as its story feels complete, and exploring the many worlds and the Box further may not be necessary.

The Dark Matter finale leaves its best Jason Dessen mystery pretty open-ended and I hope it remains ambiguous. Based on a novel of the same name, Apple TV+'s Dark Matter significantly changes Blake Crouch's book, though the basic premise remains the same. In the nine-episode series, Joel Edgerton plays multiple versions of Jason Dessen across many realities. The first Jason we meet is a (mostly...

Dark Matter's Biggest Differences From the Book, Explained
Image
Dark Matter TV series adaptation on Apple TV+ explores themes of regret and the multiverse, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly. The show expands on its source material, focusing on Daniela and Charlie's lives with Jason 2, adding new storylines and characters. The Dark Matter Season 1 finale features a tense showdown between Jason and Jason 3, with Jason 2 redeeming himself, differing from the book.

Apple TV+ has established itself as a hub for sci-fi thrillers. Dark Matter, a book adaptation of the same name, is the latest to air on the streamer. The show stars Joel Edgerton as its central protagonist (and antagonist), along with Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, and Oakes Fegley.

Since the global premiere on May 8, it has become clear that the TV series has taken liberties with the source material while retaining its identity. New York Times bestselling author and show creator Blake Crouch...

Dark Matter's ensemble cast offers opportunities for exploring various characters' stories and multiverse dilemmas. Season 2 could shift to an ensemble format, exploring multiple storylines and deepening the exploration of core themes.

Warning! This article contains Dark Matter Season 1 finale spoilers.

Dark Matter star Joel Edgerton recently shed light on the show's climactic finale and the exciting prospects for its continuation. The series' first season ending brought a dramatic closure for the Dessen family, who, amid a multiverse of chaos, stepped through the Box into an unexplored world, seeking a fresh start away from the countless alternate selves that had overrun their original existence.

Per Screen Rant, Edgerton was genuinely excited for the narrative threads that could be unraveled in potential future seasons. "You got to keep the gang together, you know, what I mean?" the actor mused,...

Dark Matter Creator & Co-Writer Tease Important Setting For A Potential Season 2
Image
This article contains spoilers from Dark Matter season 1, episode 9, "Entanglement."

Dark Matter creators discuss the importance of World 26 in a potential season 2, hinting at its significance for characters Amanda and Ryan. The success of Dark Matter and the creators' ideas for future storylines could lead to a season 2, despite the lack of source material. The creator and co-writer detail how involved they were in creating World 26.

Dark Matter creator Blake Crouch and series finale co-writer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry discuss the importance of a major setting in a potential season 2. Crouch wrote the novel of the same name that the Apple TV+ series is based on, with Crouch also serving as the series' showrunner and head writer. Even though season 1 adapts the entirety of Crouch's novel, the finale leaves room to further explore the established characters and the infinite possibilities of the multiverse, including the seemingly utopian world where Amanda Lucas (Alice Braga...

Jennifer Connelly and ‘Dark Matter’ Writers Answer Finale Questions, Talk Easter Eggs and a Potential Second Season
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from Episode 9, “Entanglement,” the Season 1 finale of “Dark Matter,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

The finale of “Dark Matter,” based on the bestselling novel by Blake Crouch, has hit Apple TV+, and while it answers many questions, it also poses a new ones. We spoke to Jennifer Connelly, who pays Daniela Dessen, who has to make an unthinkable choice. In addition, we talked to Crouch, who adapted his own book for television, as well as his co-writer of the final episode, Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry. And we couldn’t help but ask about a potential second season.

For purposes of this story, characters with multiple selves are referred to by the universe they were first seen in. So JasonPrime is from “our” world, while Jason2 and Amanda2 come from the second world shown.

The penultimate episode of “Dark Matter” saw JasonPrime (Joel Edgerton) reunited with Daniela...

‘Dark Matter’: Joel Edgerton Teases ‘Siege of Jasons’ in Finale — Watch Sneak Peek (Video)
Image
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Dark Matter Season 1, Episode 8 “Jupiter.”] Is physics professor Jason Desson (Joel Edgerton) about to have his happy ending? Maybe. At least, that’s what it looked like at the end of the June 19 episode of Apple TV+‘s sci-fi thriller Dark Matter when Jason met up with wife Daniela (Snowpiercer’s Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley) at Chicago’s landmark sculpture known as The Bean. Jason used the safe word with Daniela — “Jupiter” — and Daniela looked pretty sure about the Jason she chose, after having escaped three other alternate versions of her husband, including the original kidnapper who had been living in her home that she pushed down the basement stairs (Heck yes!). But this action series, based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 bestselling novel, isn’t over yet and only one Jason can rule them ...

Joel Edgerton's alternate-universe-hopping protagonist finally makes it back to his Chicago, and he starts formulating a plan to kill Jason2 and take back his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connolly) and his son Charlie (Oakes Fegley).

10 Best New TV Shows of 2024 (So Far)
Image
In 2023, television audiences bid a fond farewell to popular series such as Succession, Barry, and Billions. As anyone who's ever broken up with a significant other or felt the loss of a beloved pet already knows, sometimes the easiest way to move on is to replace what has been lost with something new. Thankfully, television always offers its audiences the opportunity to do precisely that with a plethora of new series released every year.

Throughout its first six months, 2024 has seen the television industry attempt to move on from the actors' and writers' strikes that brought Hollywood to a standstill last summer and which has had a trickle-down effect, leading to a sparser roster of new shows than we otherwise expected. That isn't to say there isn't anything new and exciting to watch on television only that fans might have to look a little harder to find the best new...

Warning! This article contains spoilers from Apple TV+'s Dark Matter.

Apple TV+ series Dark Matter's creator Blake Crouch revealed a specific scene from his novel that he chose to alter for the television series. The scene involves a concept that, while intriguing, strayed from scientific plausibility.

The show follows Edgerton's character, Jason, who finds himself abruptly transported into a different version of his own life. ‘Dark Matter’ Creator Blake Crouch on Ways Series Expands Jason’s Story From Books, and Why His Favorite Scene Almost Didn’t Happen
Image
Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from the first five episodes of “Dark Matter,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

Blake Crouch ostensibly writes sci-fi stories; his mind-bending suspense novels “Dark Matter,” “Recursion” “Upgrade” are set in worlds where technology presents an opportunity to visit other dimensions, time travel and advance one’s brain and body to superhuman levels. But what makes Crouch’s work so special is that his books are love stories as well.

It’s certainly true of “Dark Matter,” his 2016 novel that he adapted into a limited series, currently airing on Apple TV+. Joel Edgerton stars as Jason Dessan, a loving family man who is kidnapped by a Jason from an alternate universe so that the two can swap lives. Jason2, as Crouch refers to him, finally gets to live out his life with wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley.) Jason Prime, however, is...
