Argentina, 1985 Leads 2023 Platino Awards Nominations

Santiago Miter’s political thriller Argentina, 1985 leads this year’s Platino awards nominations with 14 nods, including Best Director, Screenplay, and Best Ibero-American Fiction Film. Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s latest pic Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths trails with six nominations alongside Spanish filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beasts and Lullaby by Alauda Ruiz De Azúa. On the TV side, the Colombian series Noticia de un kidnapping also notched six noms. This year’s Platino awards take place on April 22 at the Ifema Municipal Palace in Madrid. The eight filmmakers will receive £5000 between them.

Aleem Khan and Sian A. Williams are among the eight recipients of a £5000 Miles Ketley Memorial Fund from the UK’s Independent Cinema Office (Ico).

The total bursary is worth £15,000 and will be spread across three years. It is aimed at filmmakers from communities that are “traditionally excluded from the industry”.

The shortlist for the first edition of the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards, sponsored by Creo, has been announced. The awards aim to elevate original voices from around the globe with a fresh perspective on storytelling.

The awards ceremony will take place Feb. 22 on the Sony Pictures Studio lot in Culver City, Calif. After the awards, the 30 shortlisted filmmakers will then take part in a three-day workshop program.

The jury included filmmaker Justin Chadwick, president of TriStar Pictures Nicole Brown, UTA Partner Jeremy Barber, and cinematographer Roger Deakins.

Chadwick said, “The global response has been truly exhilarating. New voices from all over the world have sent in films in all categories in huge numbers. Films that are original, diverse and fresh, filled with passion and originality.”

Creo organizes events and programming related to photography, film and contemporary art.

More than 4,000 films from 3,000 filmmakers in 140 countries were submitted.

Nash Edgerton’s Shark and Madeleine Gottlieb’s You and Me, Before and After are heading to the Toronto International Film Festival in September, where they will screen as part of TIFF Short Cuts.

Shark forms Edgerton’s sequel to previous shorts Bear and Spider, continuing the adventures of prankster Jack. As well as directing, Edgerton wrote the film with David Michôd, and stars alongside Rose Byrne. Michele Bennett produces, with cinematographer Aaron McLisky and editor David Whittaker.

TIFF will form the film’s world premiere, while Sydney Film Festival also announced this week that it will compete for the Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films in November.

Edgerton said: “We are very excited to share Jack’s latest dating misadventures in Shark, our sequel to Spider and Bear, and even more excited to premiere the film in Toronto.”
