200% Wolf review – moon spirit baby turns kiddie werewolf sequel into frenetic howler
Ilai Swindells
Where 100% Wolf was giddy fun, the chaos of its sequel is in a rush to get to nowhere very interesting or charming

More like 3% watchable. Or 81% likely to give you a headache. Here’s a howler of a sequel to kids’ animation 100% Wolf that picks up the story of Freddy Lupin (voiced by Ilai Swindells), the teenage heir to an illustrious family of werewolves. In the last movie poor Freddy discovered that by the light of the full moon, he transforms into a fluffy neon-pink poodle. The sheer silliness of the original was entertaining and it trotted along with zip and fun. The new film is so frenetic that adults might be tempted to preload on painkillers.

This time around Freddy is still feeling miffed, still disrespected by the pack. Desperate, he prays to the moon spirits for divine intervention. A naughty spirit baby called Moopoo (Elizabeth Nabben) takes pity...

Orange Entertainment Co. options Asphyxia novel ‘Future Girl’, hires Diya Eid and Aven Yap
Image
Orange Entertainment Co. has optioned Asphyxia’s YA novel Future Girl, which explores what it means to come of age as a Deaf teenager against the backdrop of a near-future Melbourne facing an environmental catastrophe.

With Oec, Asphyxia will co-develop the project, currently being prepped as a series, serving as writer, creator, and EP.

Published last year via Allen & Unwin Australia, Future Girl has been described by writer and appearance activist Carly Findlay as “a life-changing book for young Deaf and disabled people…demonstrating the importance of the #OwnVoices movement.”

Asphyxia is excited to bring authentic Deaf characters to the screen, providing a positive representation for the 1 in 6 Australians who have hearing loss.

“I have never even seen a movie in my own language, Auslan, which is poetically beautiful and expressive and begging to shine on the big screen. At last, in Future Girl, it will,” she says.

The aim...

Official US Trailer for Animated Werewolf Poodle Comedy '100% Wolf'
Rupert Degas, Jane Lynch, Loren Gray, Jai Courtney, Samara Weaving, and Ilai Swindells in 100% Wolf (2020)
"The best wolves don't have the sharpest claws or the pointiest teeth, they have the biggest hearts." Viva Pictures has released an official trailer for an animated movie called 100% Wolf, made by an Australian animation filmmaker named Alexs Stadermann (of the hit Maya the Bee Movie previously). This opened in the UK & Australia earlier in the summer, and it's out now in select theaters in the US. For anyone curious. 100% Wolf centers on Freddy Lupin, heir to a proud family line of werewolves. Positive he will become the most fearsome werewolf ever, Freddy is in for a shock when his first "warfing" goes awry, turning him into a ferocious - poodle. Featuring the voices of Loren Gray, Samara Weaving, Jane Lynch, Jai Courtney, and Ilai Swindells. I'm impressed that someone made a werewolf movie for kids, even though it's a bit too on-the-nose with its poodle story. It's also such bland,...

100% Wolf review
Ilai Swindells
It is always great to see more independent animation reaching mainstream screens. It may lack the big budgets of a Disney/Pixar film, but it has all the great intentions, big heart and silly fun for kids and bigger kids alike to enjoy, however generic the sum of some of its parts may be. Disney alumnus Alexs Stadermann swaps animator role for the director’s chair with animated werewolf caper 100% Wolf, complete with lively action, kick-ass hounds and delightfully oddball human beings.

13 year-old Freddy Lupin is no ordinary teen. He comes from a highly respected family of werewolves and is expected to take over the pack after its leader, his late father, is killed. His extended werewolf family is also a pack of ‘do-gooder’ superhero hounds who help fight evil and crime in the local town at night, rather than savage the local population.

Freddy’s initiation ceremony is set...

100% Wolf - Amber Wilkinson - 16124
Ilai Swindells
Familiar themes of an orphaned boy, an evil uncle, being true to yourself and finding your pack are given fresh Aussie energy in this animated adaptation of Jayne Lyons' coming-of-age story. The werewolves here may look fierce but it's quickly established that, aside from a hatred of dogs and their long-documented problems with silver, they get up to rescue missions after their moonlight "warfing".

Young Freddy can't resist tagging along, taking the sacred ring to help find his dad Flasheart (Jai Courtney) - the pack's High Howler - but on a night that goes badly wrong, he is left without dad or the ring and with slightly unhinged ice-cream man Foxwell Cripp (Rhys Darby) determined to prove the werewolves are real. It's quickly established that his Uncle Hotspur (Rupert Degas) could rival Simba's Uncle Scar in the sibling rivalry department and to top it all...

Pallavi Sharda, Ilai Swindells and Maria Angelico.

The ABC has ordered a six-part narrative comedy from Unless Pictures and Orange Entertainment centred on Covid-19 isolation, due to start filming – remotely – this month before airing in July.

Titled Retrograde, the series follows the lives of a group of 30-something friends, as they drown their sorrows at a ‘virtual bar’ during the pandemic. It will star Pallavi Sharda, Ilai Swindells, Maria Angelico, Esther Hannaford and Nick Boshier, with guest star Ronny Chieng.

The cast will film from their respective locations, activated by remote technical operators and working with an overarching technical director, as they record a group video chat that forms the central storyline. In addition to the main eps, there will be extended digital content to deepen audience engagement.

The full synopsis: “Gemma is about to embark on an exciting career in Korea when Covid-19 crashes her farewell party. Faster than...
