Sanya Malhotra made sure that she made everyone a little uncomfortable while watching her film Mrs. The social drama, which is an official remake of the Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen, arrived on Zee 5 two weeks ago and has been making everyone uncomfortable ever since!

In two weeks, the viewership of the film stood at 4.2 million views, and it took a huge jump in week 2 after the word-of-mouth for the film grew gradually. Starring Sanya Malhotra, the film has sparked a debate around the status of Indian women in a patriarchal society.

Helmed by Arati Kadav, the film garnered a viewership of 1.1 million views in the opening week. This viewership grew by 181% in week 2 and garnered a total of 3.1 million views in week 2. In fact it has surpassed R Madhavan’s film on the same platform!

“Mrs.” (2024), directed by Arati Kadav, is the story of Mrs. Richa Sharma (played by Sanya Malhotra) as she metamorphoses into Richa, a prime number who is unbreakable by the force majeure that life post-marriage in a middle-class house can look like, even in a contemporary Indian setting. Richa is a dancer; she runs her own dance troupe but is quickly married to Diwakar (played by Nishant Dahiya), a gynecologist who runs his own clinic. Soon after, Richa comes to observe the elaborate ordeal that cooking food and serving it to the men of the house looks like.

For example, her mother-in-law uses a sil batta (i.e. a stone mortar and pestle) to prepare green chutney instead of a food processor because her husband is not well disposed towards the use of the latter during cooking. This seems to be the week of honourable but adventurous remakes. While Advait Chandan’s Loveyapa is that slurpy healthy fast food that doesn’t trivialize the palate of the original, Mrs, directed by debutante Aarti Kadav, cracks the adaptive code without any mishap.

Ms Kadav has Sanya Malhotra’s stout support from first to last frame, just as director Jeo Baby had Nimisha Sajan in the original Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen.

This may sound shocking to the purists. But I actually “enjoyed” Mrs more than The Great Indian Kitchen, which is not to say that the original was a lesser film. It was probably a much more accomplished work. But heck, Mrs is just so much more immersive. Part of it comes from Malhotra, who captures the horror of a newly married woman trapped in the kitchen with a seamless spontaneity.

Based on the book, ‘Sultan of Delhi: Ascension’ by Arnab Ray, the series is produced by Reliance Entertainment and directed by Milan Luthria and co-directed and co-written by Suparn Verma.

Once upon a time, Milan Luthria directed a film about gangsters called Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. Not that it was any great shakes. But compared to Luthria’s new homage to gangsterism, it was a masterpiece.

The new monsterpiece stretching into nine episodes should have never been made. It is hideously bad in plotting and woefully inadequate in execution. The sets are tacky: a refugee camp in the opening episode looks like a college canteen.

Dull and cheesy, it establishes an immediate yawn sumbandh with the audience, provided there is an audience for these tales glorifying gangsters and sociopaths who should ideally be placed in the trashcan of anonymity.

Actor Nishant Dahiya, whose show ‘Sultan of Delhi’ released on Friday, shared an incident which reminded him of his ‘Raat Akeli Hai’ co-actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui. There was a particular scene which the director of ‘Sultan of Delhi’, Milan Luthria, literally choreographed and wanted him to emulate.

Talking about taking a cue from Nawaz, Nishant said: “It felt like Deja vu from ‘Raat Akeli Hai’ where the director did exactly the same and Nawaz sir had to emulate. If someone as seasoned as Nawazuddin could attentively listen and observe a debutant director who choreographed a few scenes while shooting for Raat Akeli Hai, then I certainly could learn a lesson or two from mirroring my director, Milan Sir. This experience with Nawaz sir years back made my journey on the sets Sultan of Delhi so much easier.”
