Step Back ‘Demon Slayer,’ ‘Sakamoto Days’ Latest Achievement Is Exactly Why Fans Shouldn’t Judge an Anime Based on Animation Alone
Image
The world of anime has long been dominated by visually appealing shows, with titles such as Demon Slayer setting high standards for animation quality. Fans usually assess anime based on its animation qualities, sometimes missing other important aspects like the story, character development, and pacing.

However, Sakamoto Days, Netflix’s most recent anime hit, demonstrates that an anime doesn’t need top-tier, movie-level animation to achieve global success.

Sakamoto Days, which premiered on January 11, 2025, soon gained popularity, reaching the 2nd spot internationally for non-English series on Netflix during the week of January 13-19.

With 8.6 million views in a single week, it ranked on top in five countries and entered the top ten in 67 more. Even more impressively, it ranked 9th overall in the United States, an incredible feat for an anime without mainstream blockbuster animation.

Image
In a recent interview with Comic Natalie, voice actor Tomikazu Sugita opened up about his initial hesitation to take on the lead role of Sakamoto in Sakamoto Days anime.

His reason? A sense of déjà vu tied to his past work.

Sugita admitted that while he was aware of the manga’s buzz as a rising Weekly Shonen Jump hit, he was hesitant to take on the role due to similarities with a character he had played before.

“I had already played a protagonist in a similar position in a Jump anime before, so I had that in mind, and it felt a bit like déjà vu.“

When the audition opportunity arose, he initially focused on another character, Kashima. However, his agency strongly encouraged him to also consider Sakamoto.

“When I received the audition information for Sakamoto Days, I showed the character materials for a character named Kashima to my agency staff,...

Sanrio's New Ranking of Kings Crossover With Hello Kitty & More Gets Worldwide Release
Image
Sanrio's beloved mascots like Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, My Melody and Kuromi have mass global appeal, but official releases are still often exclusive to Japan. Now, however, its latest crossover offers merchandise that's available for pre-order worldwide, and for one of the most heartfelt anime series to air in recent years.

Ranking of Kings, a coming-of-age fantasy anime based on the manga of the same name, premiered in 2021 and took its season by storm. Written by Taku Kishimoto and animated by Wit Studio, Ranking of Kings made headlines for its enormously sympathetic cast, unexpected fairy tale deconstructions and powerful tear-jerker moments. Its new collaboration with Sanrio may seem equally surprising at first glance, although the specific character matchups also feel oddly appropriate.

Oda Doesn’t Want One Piece Anime Remake To Just Faithfully Adapt The Manga, Reveals Director
Image
In a behind-the-scenes video released by Netflix Anime, fans were given a rare glimpse into the production of the highly anticipated The One Piece anime by Wit Studio.

The video, featuring insights from Director Masashi Koizuka, revealed a surprising directive from One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda: the remake should not simply be a faithful adaptation of the manga.

Koizuka explained that this approach required the team to capture the essence of One Piece while introducing fresh perspectives.
