Fans of The Neighborhood were left disappointed when CBS confirmed that the popular sitcom would end with Season 8. Unfortunately, the proposed spinoff will not be moving forward either.
However, Cedric the Entertainer, who stars as Calvin Butler in the series, told TV Line that he wasn't too surprised by the news. "I do recognize that we're in a very difficult time as far as television goes," he said. "We were excited about doing this. We created the idea, and we intentionally tried to use an episode of The Neighborhood that we had in order to shoot it."
The actor went on to explain the state of television in 2025, saying that despite having an interesting premise, broadcast networks are simply "not doing a lot of pilots [anymore]. They're not spending a lot of money. They're just kind of work-shopping ideas. We thought we did a great job, but ultimately there wasn't enough...

Exclusive: CBS has picked up The Neighborhood for an eighth season, which will be the veteran sitcom’s last. It will air in 2025-26.
A reliable Monday anchor, the series, starring and executive produced by Cedric the Entertainer, unexpectedly found itself on the bubble this year, not making the list of early CBS renewals last month. It is the first of the shows that were left off to get a renewal following the recent cancellations of FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International and S.W.A.T. They all come from outside studios while The Neighborhood is produced by CBS sibling CBS Studios.
For The Neighborhood, the uncertainty over its future stemmed from its cost. As a series in its seventh season with a big-name cast, The Neighborhood is expensive. Deals with the actors for Season 8 have been made, paving the way for one final renewal.

A spinoff of “The Neighborhood” starring Marcel Spears and Sheaun McKinney is in the works at CBS, Variety has confirmed.
The multi-cam series, should it move forward, will follow their characters Marty and Malcolm Butler as they venture out of their parents’ home and migrate from Pasadena to Venice Beach. The show does not yet have a series order but is being considered for the 2025-2026 broadcast season.
This would be the second spinoff of “The Neighborhood,” which is currently airing its seventh season. The series stars Max Greenfield as Dave Johnson, a white, Michigan dad who moves his family into a predominantly Black neighborhood in Los Angeles. Not everyone appreciates his “Midwestern niceness,” including Calvin Butler (Cedric the Entertainer). Spears and McKinney play Marty and Malcolm, Calvin’s sons.

The Neighborhood universe is eying further expansion with a second spinoff. The upcoming Season 7 finale of the hit CBS comedy series starring Cedric the Entertainer will serve as a planted spinoff headlined by Marcel Spears and Sheaun McKinney.
The premise of the offshoot echoes that of the mothership in reverse. It follows Marty (Marcel Spears) and Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney) Butler as they embark on new adventures, finally leaving their parents’ nest to start the next chapters of their lives, finding themselves the newcomers in a neighborhood that’s both close by yet worlds apart: Venice Beach.
Three new characters will be introduced in the planted spinoff (Episode 720) as guest stars with options to become series regulars if CBS moves forward with the project for the 2025-26 season.
The Neighborhood kicked off in 2018 as a white Midwestern family, the Johnsons, moved into a predominantly black neighborhood in Pasadena, California, with the Butlers as their neighbors.

The 2023 strikes in the entertainment industry led to the cancelation of several TV shows, highlighting the ongoing issues of wages and working conditions for writers and actors. Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, A League of Their Own, and How I Met Your Father were among the shows impacted by the strikes and subsequently canceled, despite positive reviews and critical acclaim. The strikes also resulted in changes and advancements for future projects, suggesting that the efforts made by unions will have a positive impact on the industry.
The 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes have come to an end, but after many months, unfortunately some productions won’t be returning to TV screens. The WGA strike ended after 148 days on September 27, while the SAG-AFTRA strike ended after 118 days on November 9. Sadly, this is far from the first time the unions have had to strike, nor the first time television shows have been impacted.
