Sean Baker Breaks Down the Emotional Last Scene of ‘Anora’ — and One of the Great Movie Endings
Image
[Editor’s note: The following story contains major spoilers for “Anora.”]

“Anora” ends with a grand gesture, and a moment of gratitude that curdles into despair and possibly hope. And Sean Baker is here to talk how it was done.

The writer/director’s finale, set inside a car as snow falls on Brighton Beach outside it and windshield wipers lull the audience into a kind of trance until Baker and team drop the hammer, is one of the all-time great movie endings. It’s the sort of shattering cut-to-black that leaves you stuck to your seat, an emotional sendoff to what was heretofore a deceptively screwball comedy about a sex worker and exotic dancer, Ani (Mikey Madison), whose “greatest day” leads to a rock-bottom revelation.

Dispatched Russian henchman Igor has carted Ani from Vegas, where she had a whirlwind contract marriage to a party-hopping childish whisp of an oligarch’s son (Mark Eydelshteyn), back to New York. The marriage (“a fraud marriage?...

‘100 Yards’ Review: ‘The Grandmaster’ Screenwriter Xu Haofeng Delivers a Blazingly Elegant Martial Arts Epic of His Own
Image
Blazing fast combat. Pronounced tension between tradition and modernity. Sound effects so intense that several foley artists probably died of exhaustion. A fight to inherit a famous martial arts academy, galvanized by a mutual obsession over the late master’s unbeatable secret technique. “100 Yards” is nothing if not a classic martial arts movie, and yet this bruising story about turn-of-the-century Tianjin — co-directed by Xu Haofeng, who previously scripted Wong Kar Wai’s “The Grandmaster” — has been shot and staged with such radical elegance that it seems less like a throwback than it does the pursuit of a new form. It’s a form this film is only able to achieve at the cost of its soul, as Xu and his brother Xu Junfeng struggle to sustain any of what makes their initial premise so compelling, but the moments when “100 Yards” lands its blows are exhilarating in a way...

‘100 Yards’ Review: The Action’s Hot but the Drama’s Lukewarm in This Martial Arts Spectacle Set in 1920s Tianjin
Image
Dazzling martial arts and stylish production design do battle with an undercooked story and one-note central characters in “100 Yards,” which comes to U.S. theaters on Friday after a limited local release for China in September. Initially an engaging portrait of two fighting aces duking it out for control of a martial arts academy in 1920s Tianjin, this handsomely packaged effort directed by brothers Xu Haofeng (“The Final Master” and co-writer of Wong Kar-wai’s “The Grandmaster”) and feature debutant Xu Junfeng is great to look at but runs aground with a seemingly endless series of encounters between status-obsessed males who become less and less interesting the longer their feud drags on. Action fans simply seeking top-drawer wushu combat should be satisfied, but general viewers may grow impatient with a repetitive plot that struggles to deliver compelling human drama from its promising elements.

“100 Yards” gets off to a...

From Goonies to the MCU: Ke Huy Quan Shares How Kevin Feige Personally Invited Him To Join Marvel Universe
Image
Ke Huy Quan discussed how Kevin Feige invited him to join MCU (Photo Credit – Instagram/Facebook)

Ke Huy Quan’s leap from The Goonies to Loki is as legendary as his roles. In a chat, he revealed how Marvel Studios’ head, Kevin Feige, personally called him to join the MCU—and his excitement went through the roof.

“When I got that call, that was incredible. I got emotional,” Quan admitted. “I was driving, and Kevin Feige said he loved Everything Everywhere All at Once and my performance.” And as if that wasn’t enough to make anyone tear up, Feige added the kicker: “Ke, we want you to join the MCU family.” Quan had to pull over because his vision got a little blurry—tears of joy do that.

That wasn’t the first time Quan and Feige crossed paths. They met way back in the early 2000s on the set of X-Men.

Ke Huy Quan To Lead Action Thriller Fairytale In New York From The Director Of Sisu
Image
The Quanaissance continues! Ever since Ke Huy Quan made his Oscar winning Hollywood comeback in The Daniels' Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2022, the phone's been ringing off the hook for the former Goonies and Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom child star. And after getting a tantalising glimpse at Quan's first true action leading role in upcoming 87North joint Love Hurts just last week, the in-demand actor has found his next star vehicle. Per THR's reporting, Quan has closed a deal to lead Fairytale In New York, an original action thriller from Sisu director Jelmari Hellander.

For those unfamiliar with Hellander's last movie, Sisu is a 90-minute exercise in insane, Looney Tunes level violence that sees a lone Finnish war veteran variously stabbing, shooting, exploding, and otherwise setting alight/wrecking Nazis. It's intense, action-packed, and ludicrously entertaining. And by the sounds of it, Fairytale In New York...

Love Hurts Director Explains Making Ke Huy Quan an Action Movie Star With His First Leading Role
Image
Ke Huy Quan's successful Hollywood return and natural kindness made him the perfect choice for Love Hurts.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, fight coordinator-turned-director Jonathan Eusebio revealed how the idea for his action film came together and why Quan particularly caught his eye to play protagonist Marvin Gable. "It was right before the SAG strike, somewhere near there. The idea started during the awards season when he was campaigning for his Oscar," Eusebio said, recalling how the Everything Everywhere All At Once star "was winning awards, and he was giving all these inspiring speeches. So you could see that he's genuinely happy and very grateful, and everyone loves him. But to see that inspired me to go, 'Man, this guy makes everyone feel good about themselves.' I then saw parallels between him and the Marvin character, and I said, 'This guy is perfect.'"

Meet ‘Love Hurts’ Director Jonathan Eusebio, the Latest ‘John Wick’ Alum to Climb the Ranks
Image
It’s fitting that the first look at Jonathan Eusebio’s Love Hurts came in the same week as John Wick’s 10th anniversary. Eusebio, who’s affectionately known as “JoJo,” met Wick co-directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski at a martial arts school in the early ‘90s, and the two stunt performers turned filmmakers have taken Eusebio under their wings ever since. It was quite a career pivot for someone who majored in biological sciences at Uc Irvine, but it wasn’t completely unforeseen considering Eusebio’s two first loves were martial arts and Hong Kong action cinema.

Eusebio then climbed the ranks, working on the stunt teams for features like Blade II (2002) and Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002). He then gained more and more responsibility through roles such as the assistant fight coordinator on The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) to the actual fight coordinator on Iron Man 2 (2010) and The Avengers (2012).

Then,...

Love Hurts' Ke Huy Quan On Extensive Training For Action-Comedy, Initially Passing On The Film & The MCU
Image
Ke Huy Quan is putting his action skills to the test as a realtor whose criminal past catches up with him in Love Hurts. Quan memorably broke out as a child actor with the back-to-back hits of The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom before stepping away from acting for nearly 20 years due to being typecast, instead turning to working behind the scenes as a stunt choreographer and assistant director. Following his breakout return in Everything Everywhere All at Once, which netted him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Quan has found acclaim with Loki season 2 and American Born Chinese.

Quan stars in Love Hurts as Marvin Gable, an upbeat realtor whose quiet-yet-successful life is thrown into turmoil when he receives a letter from Rose, a woman from his past, on Valentine's Day that confirms that he's no longer hidden and that his mob boss brother is hunting him.

Listen, If Im Going To Do This: Ke Huy Quan Had 1 Condition For His 2025 R-Rated Action Movie, And It Was Inspired By Hong Kongs 80s Genre Legends
Image
Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan reveals his one condition to star in the 2025 comedy action movie Love Hurts. Quan won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of time-traveling husband Waymond Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Love Hurts revolves around a familiar premise about an average nobody turning into an action hero. Quan plays a mild-mannered realtor, Marvin Gable, who's a hitman hiding in plain sight.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Quan shared the one big condition to starring in Love Hurts. As a big fan of Hong Kong action movies in the '80s, the actor found that era to be "really special" and part of the reason was actors like Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Jet Li performing their own stunts. With Love Hurts, one thing he requested was to "do all the fights," "every punch, every kick" by himself. He...

The Goonies Star Ke Huy Quan Offers Exciting Reunion Update
Image
In his new film Love Hurts, Oscar-winning actor Ke Huy Quan finds himself in the unfamiliar position of lead actor in an action comedy. While the film provides a new acting challenge, it also brings his career full circle, as it reunited him with some of his co-stars from The Goonies forty years after they made the 1980s classic. In a new interview with THR, Quan detailed how the film brought Data and Mikey together again.

While Love Hurts isn't the Goonies sequel fans have been hoping for, it will still bring nostalgia for fans of the 1985 adventure. According to Quan, while discussing casting possibilities for the role of Cliff, who plays the boss of Quan's character, producers mentioned Sean Astin as a possibility. "When I heard (Astin's name), I said 'Oh my God, we have to make that happen,'" he recalled. Astin was up for a Data/Mikey reunion,...

‘Love Hurts’ Star Ke Huy Quan Talks ‘The Goonies’ Reunion and Fulfilling His Action Star Dreams
Image
Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan continues to write new chapters in his feel-good comeback story, and this latest one is as an action star in Jonathan Eusebio’s Love Hurts.

After a nearly two-decade hiatus from acting, Quan won an Oscar for his supporting role as Waymond Wang in Daniels’ best picture-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once. It was a storybook second chance for an actor who grew disillusioned with acting, opting to quit and enroll in USC’s film program. It wasn’t until watching 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians that he felt the urge to test the waters for any new opportunities.

In Love Hurts, Quan’s character, Marvin Gable, is one of Milwaukee’s best real estate agents, and he, too, has also been enjoying his own second bite of the apple until his much darker past as a hitman comes back to haunt him. In the lead-up...

Everything to Know About the 2024 Oscars
Image
The 2024 Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel returns as host for the fourth time, joined onstage by an all-star list of presenters.

Kimmel previously said he returned to emcee the show partly because he had a feeling a popular movie might be nominated, arguing that it’s easier to joke about something the audience has seen.

“I am sitting in a movie theater watching Barbie and thinking, ‘Well, maybe I’ll do this again, because at least I have a point of reference with everyone,’” he said.

He said he also felt that with Top Gun: Maverick, which landed six Oscar nominations, including a nod for best picture, at the 2023 Oscars: “I knew there was a movie that people had seen, and it just makes the job easier.”

Oscars executive producer Molly McNearney echoed this appreciation for...

Every Kung Fu Panda Movie, Ranked From Worst To Best

Kung Fu Panda and its sequels have a lot of heart and feature a talented cast that plays off each other well, contributing to the franchise's longevity. Kung Fu Panda was culturally accurate and well-received in China, serving as an example of cultural appreciation done right. Which 2024 Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee has the longest (and shortest) screen time?
Image
Ever since Mahershala Ali won the 2017 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Moonlight” with less than 21 minutes of screen time, the academy has consistently lauded much larger featured male roles, with all of the last half dozen honorees having comfortably surpassed the category’s screen time average. That streak is practically assured to end this year, however, since most of the men currently vying for the prize clock in below average and none of them appear in more than a quarter of their movies.

The 2024 supporting actor nominees have an average screen time of 29 minutes and 36 seconds, or 19.56% of their respective films. While they outpace last year’s group by 42 seconds, they also fall behind them by almost five percentage points. Their physical time average essentially puts them right in the middle of the category’s all-time ranking, while their percentage mean is the 17th lowest ever.

The last 10 winners of...

Critics Choice Awards review: Sharp Chelsea Handler, surprise winners and moving speeches make for successful ceremony
Image
After a rather bumpy start, the winter awards season returned to smoother, more pleasurable sailing at the 29th Critics Choice Awards. Veteran host Chelsea Handler’s opening monologue was sharp and celebratory rather than condescending and snide. While not every single joke packed a comedic wallop, she clearly had the audience on her side and set the tone for an upbeat telecast. The pro didn’t overstay her welcome, either, occasionally returning after a commercial break with sharp, brief introductory quips.

See 2024 Critics Choice Awards: Complete winners list in all 41 categories

Most powerfully, after she observed that 2023 was a bona fide year of women, Handler appropriately used her post to welcome to the spotlight Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, who had won for Best Comedy Film for “Barbie” off-air and therefore didn’t get the chance to deliver a proper acceptance speech. It was a moment that demonstrated how a good host should function,...

Michelle Yeoh & Ke Huy Quan's Critically-Acclaimed Disney+ Series Canceled After Just One Season
Image
Disney+ has lost yet another show after the company recently revealed it is not moving forward with a second season of the critically-acclaimed series American Born Chinese.

The series is an adaptation of Gene Luen Yang's graphic novel of the same name and follows teenager Jin Wang, who finds himself entangled in a battle between humanity and ancient Chinese gods and mythology. Starring Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, American Born Chinese ran for only eight episodes in its first season and despite its highly-praised, award-winning cast, failed to make it among the top performing series on the platform. Its cancelation was reported by Variety.

Loki Concept Art Sees a Very Different Version of Ke Huy Quan's Ouroboros
Image
An early piece of concept art for Loki Season 2 treats fans to a much different version of Ouroboros, who bears no resemblance to series star Ke Huy Quan.

Shared onto Instagram by Aleksi Briclot, the image sees Ouroboros as an older-looking Black man wearing an orange jumpsuit and blue shirt instead of the brown and green ensemble from the show while standing in front of a recycle logo and having a marking on his head with his eyes mostly closed. The last two pictures in the upload, which are blow-ups of the first, give fans an increasingly clearer look at the marking, which Briclot delves into the upload's description, where he also reveals this look was cooked up before Quan was cast.

Barbenheimer battle at the Globes: Robert Downey, Jr. vs. Ryan Gosling
Image
Barbenheimer kicked off when both Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” were released in theatres on the same day last year on July 21. However, the fun-spirited, lighthearted rivalry between the Warner Bros. comedy and the Universal biopic has continued into this awards season. Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have often been the most nominated films at various awards groups and two performers have found themselves head to head in pretty much every precursor so far: supporting players Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Gosling.

Downey Jr. plays scheming politician Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer” and produces a thoughtful, fierce performance as the film’s primary antagonist. Gosling, meanwhile, has the time of his life in the year’s most colorful performance — playing Ken, the doll obsessed with Barbie, in “Barbie.” You couldn’t get two more contrasting performances — both are genius in their own measure. They are nominated alongside one...

‘American Born Chinese’ Canceled After One Season at Disney+
Image
“American Born Chinese” has been canceled after one season at Disney+, Variety has learned.

According to an individual with knowledge of the decision, Disney was high on the creative of the series, but its viewership did not justify greenlighting a second season. The producers plan to shop the series to other outlets.

“American Born Chinese” debuted on Disney+ on May. The Disney Branded Television series was based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang. The official logline states that the show “chronicles the trials and tribulations of a regular American teenager whose life is forever changed when he befriends the son of a mythological god.”

The cast of the series included Ben Wang, Michelle Yeoh, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Jimmy Liu, Ke Huy Quan, Sydney Taylor, and Daniel Wu. The show received positive reviews from critics, with the first season holding a 94% approval rating based on 51 reviews.

‘American Born Chinese’ Canceled By Disney+ After One Season
Image
Disney+ is not proceeding with a second season of Disney Branded Television/20th Television’s action fantasy series American Born Chinese, which stars Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh.

The decision comes more than seven months after the eight-episode first season was released May 24. It also comes after the options on the cast expired yesterday, I hear. 20th Television still plans to shop the series elsewhere.

Created by Kelvin Yu based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel, American Born Chinese had an impeccable timing, launching on the heels of the 2023 awards season that saw Yeoh and Quan win trophy after trophy for their movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, culminating with both of them landing Oscars in March.

Despite featuring Hollywood’s “it” duo of the moment in Yeoh and Quan and garnering strong reviews, American Born Chinese could not attract a large enough audience and did...
