Not all the news coming out of CBS today is good news: After reversing its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., the Eye network has cancelled freshman dramas East New York and True Lies, TVLine has learned.

East New York starred Amanda Warren as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, who ran a police station in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood. The newly promoted Haywood faced resistance from veteran officers and detectives who didn’t like the changes she was trying to make. Jimmy Smits co-starred as Haywood’s mentor John Suarez. Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Lavel Schley and Olivia Luccardi led the supporting cast.

There will be no second season for CBS’ True Lies. The network has canceled the reboot of James Cameron’s hit 1994 action comedy movie after one season. The news comes ahead of the show’s Season 1 finale on May 17.

The decision is not surprising. True Lies has not been able to find an audience, ranking as CBS’ lowest-rated scripted series of the season. Its ratings remained relatively steady, indicating a loyal core audience, but they stayed low.

CBS today made renewal decisions on its three remaining bubble series, reversing the Friday cancellation of S.W.A.T. with a 13-episode order for a seventh and final season, and canceling freshman East New York. All three dramas come from outside studios.

James Cameron’s 1994 blockbuster action comedy True Lies inspired CBS’s upcoming primetime drama of the same name. The series subs in Steve Howey (Shameless) in place of the film’s Arnold Schwarzenegger as Harry, the suburban husband who leads a secret life as an international spy. Jamie Lee Curtis played Harry’s wife, Helen, who discovered her hubby’s secret and got pulled into the spy game. Ginger Gonzaga (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) takes on the role of Helen in the series premiering on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 10pm Et/Pt.

Joining Steve Howey as Harry and Ginger Gonzaga as Helen in season one are Erica Hernandez as Maria, Omar Miller as Gib, Mike O’Gorman as Luther, Annabella Didion as Dana, and Lucas Jaye as Jake.

CBS has announced its plans for early 2023, becoming the fourth broadcast network to unveil its midseason schedule.

The network has two new shows on its schedule. They are Lingo (a game show) and True Lies (a reboot).

Lingo is a new, supercharged adaptation of the word-twisting, fast-thinking game show.

Host RuPaul Charles brings his one-of-a-kind personality to this clever, competitive and unpredictable game where teams of two face off in fast-paced puzzle rounds to guess letters that reveal seemingly simple words.

At the end of each one-hour episode, packed with witty commentary and gameplay, the two winning teams will make it through to a nerve-racking final showdown where one team will walk away with an additional big cash prize.

CBS has unveiled its midseason schedule – setting out plans to launch its True Lies series adaptation and RuPaul-hosted gameshow Lingo.

It comes after ABC, Fox and NBC revealed their midseason schedules last week.

True Lies, which comes from McG and stars Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga, will launch on Thursday February 23 at 9pm before moving to its regular slot of Wednesday at 10pm on March 1 following the two-hour premiere of season 44 of Survivor.

Lingo, which is based on a classic format, will launch on Wednesday January 11 at 9pm.

Tough As Nails, hosted by Phil Keoghan, returns for its fourth season with a two-hour special premiere on Wednesday January 4 at 9pm before moving to its regular timeslot of 10pm on Wednesday January 11.

Primetime episodes of The Price Is Right, hosted by Drew Carey, will air at 8pm from Wednesday January 4.

The Bridge and Tunnel series isn't getting a third season. Epix has cancelled the half-hour romantic comedy series from Edward Burns. The news comes as it's been revealed that Epix will be rebranded to MGM+ in January.

Written, directed, and produced by Burns, the Bridge and Tunnel TV series is set in the early 1980s and revolves around a group of recent college graduates. The network upfronts are once again front-and-center for the television industry as major players gather in New York May 16-19 for the springtime ritual of presenting programming plans for the upcoming TV season.

The business has changed markedly in the three years since industry insiders last gathered in person at Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall and the like. The pandemic accelerated television’s embrace of on-demand streaming platforms and direct-to-consumer distribution models.

But broadcast TV still has its sway — just look at the list of top performing series on the largest SVOD platforms.

As content chiefs outline their plans for the 2022-2023 television season, here is a running list of new drama and comedy series orders handed out by ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW. This post will be updated throughout upfront week.

True Lies finally has a home. The CBS network has ordered the new action series which is based on the 1994 James Cameron film starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The TV show will star Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga (above), as well as Erica Hernandez, Omar Miller, Mike O'Gorman, Annabella Didion, and Lucas Jaye.

The logline reads: "Shocked to discover that her bland and unremarkable computer consultant husband is a skilled international spy, an unfulfilled suburban housewife is propelled into a life of danger and adventure when she's recruited to work alongside him to save the world as they try to revitalize their passionless marriage."

The broadcast networks are looking ahead to the 2022-23 TV season.

We'll start with the latest round of ABC pickups.

Niecy Nash will remain in The Rookie universe after a successful two-episode backdoor pilot for a spinoff since The Rookie: Feds has landed a formal series order.

Nash plays Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy in the new series.

Also starring are Frankie Faison as Christopher "Cutty" Clark and Felix Solis as Matthew Garza.

Nash-Betts, Mark Gordon, Nathan Fillion, Michelle Chapman, Bill Norcross, and Corey Miller executive produce alongside creators Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter for Entertainment One and ABC Signature.

The Rookie has been a moderate hit for ABC, drawing decent ratings when all metrics are factored in.

ABC wants a new franchise, and all signs are pointing to The Rookie being that franchise.

Meanwhile, Hilary Swank has an exciting new drama coming to the air.

It took an extra day but True Lies, which had been expected to get a nod yesterday, along with CBS’ other new series orders, is officially picked up to series. As Deadline reported yesterday, the reboot of James Cameron’s hit 1994 action comedy movie, from Matt Nix, McG, Cameron and 20th Television, is targeted for midseason. It joins CBS’ other newly picked up hourlong series, Fire Country, East New York and So Help Me Todd, which are expected to be on the fall schedule.

In today’s TV news roundup, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” introduces a Season 13 twist, and Karamo Brown, Tony Hawk and Leslie Jones are set to compete on “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.”

USA Network announced premiere dates for three of its shows, giving “Straight Up Steve Austin” a Season 2 premiere of Jan. 11 at 11 p.m., and setting a Jan.

“Mission Unstoppable,” the weekend CBS educational/informational series from Litton Entertainment, has been picked up for a second season. The show, from executive producer Geena Davis and hosted by Miranda Cosgrove (who also serves as an EP), returns with new episodes in January.

The series is part of Litton’s “The CBS Dream Team, It’s Epic” Saturday morning programming block. The show centers on diverse female Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) professionals as role models.

New to the show as a correspondent is Fig O’Reilly, a “NASA Datanaut” and Miss Universe Ireland 2019. She joins returning correspondents Erica Hernandez and Nabeel Muscatwalla.

“Unique intersectional female characters in entertainment and media are essential to challenging negative stereotypes and inspiring girls to pursue their dreams,” Davis said. “Girls need to see positive role models on and off the screen, and as I always say, ‘If they can see it, they can be it.

"You changing your life was never about your weight." Amazon Studios has launched the first trailer for Brittany Runs a Marathon, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Paul Downs Colaizzo.
