Image
It’s been an Eternity since we’ve had a romantic comedy like this.

Eternity, a fantasy rom-com from A24, will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September before opening in theaters in November.

Hailing from director David Freyne, with a script by Freyne and Pat Cunnane, Eternity stars Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, and Callum Turner in a scenario that seems a bit like The Lobster meets Defending Your Life. The trailer is out now:

Here’s everything you need to know about this love triangle with a twist.

What’s the story?

Eternity is set in a retrofuturist purgatory that resembles New York’s Twa Hotel, where recently deceased souls wait to depart for where they’ll spend the rest of time. It follows three people who are faced with the most consequential decision of their (after)lives.

Here’s the official description: “In an afterlife where...

Elizabeth Olsen Navigates an Afterlife Love Triangle in ‘Eternity’ Trailer
Image
In the A24 film Eternity, Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) is a woman of her word. When she married her husband Larry (Miles Teller), the phrase “till death do us part” meant something to her. It meant something to her first husband Luke (Callum Turner), too, but his life being claimed while he was away at war assured it was a short-lived agreement. What Joan didn’t anticipate, however, was that her promise to both men would extend to the afterlife.

In the latest Eternity trailer, Larry arrives at the junction, essentially...

MCU/Dcu News Roundup: Superman's Mr. Handsome Backstory Revealed, Jeremy Renner On Hawkeye Season 2, And More
Image
This past weekend's San Diego Comic-Con was one of the worst in recent memory for news (most studios release their trailers before the event), but there are still lots of interesting tidbits floating around for fans of the MCU and Dcu.

We'll start this roundup with a new social post from Superman director James Gunn. The horrifying Mr. Handsome—who acted as Lex Luthor's slave in his pocket universe—has intrigued fans, with some speculating that he might be a White Martian, for example.

In a post featuring several new behind-the-scenes photos, Gunn explained, "Lex created Mr. Handsome in a Petri dish when he was 12 - he was trying to make a human. He didn't come out so well, but he just might be the only one in the world Lex has any true sentiment for, as evidenced by the photo on his desk."

That ties into Luthor eventually creating Ultraman,...

The 13 Commandments of Being a Background Actor
Image
After my back-up plan to my back-up plan crashed and burned, I wound up in “extra land.” I became a background actor — no experience required. I played everything from a creepy nun to a Hasidic Jew to John Early (albeit from behind, with a bald spot shaved into my head). It was film school on the cheap. I observed the production process up close and took copious notes. In no particular order, then, here are my 13 Commandments of Being a Background Actor. Study them wisely before even attempting to walk in my extra shoes.

Never Speak To Principal Actors That is, unless they address you first. Production can’t have, uh, Bob Wiley-adjacent types bothering actors who are preparing. That said, it’s not uncommon for principals to speak to extras. The interaction that I’ll most cherish? Moments before “action” at Strand Books in the West Village, Amanda Peet...

Peacock Has Decided the Fate of Its 93% Rotten Tomatoes Rom-Com Series
Image
It's another heartbreaking day for lovers of television as Peacock has just killed off one of its most promising shows. Laid, a romantic-comedy drama starring Everything Everywhere All At Once star Stephanie Hsu, has been cancelled on the streamer after just one season. The series premiered with all eight episodes on Peacock on December 19. Laid was a hit with audiences and the critics as well, scoring a tidy 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, but the numbers weren't quite enough for the streamer. In addition to starring, Hsu also served as executive producer, as did the show's writers and co-showrunners, Sally Bradford McKenna and Nahnatchka Khan.

Peacock has not released an official statement explaining its decision; however, Deadline, which broke the news, reports that the series was unable to draw as much attention as other shows from the same creators. Also, its streaming numbers paled against expectations. Many fans would, however, argue that...

Stephanie Hsu, Zosia Mamet's 'Laid' Canceled at Peacock
Image
Another day, another under-appreciated comedy gem gets tossed to the wayside by its streaming home. That's right, the Stephanie Hsu-starring (and executive-produced!) comedy series, Laid, has been canceled after a single season on Peacock. The show was a hit with critics (including our own Greg Archer) and fans who tuned in — gaining it a 93% on the Tomatometer, which seems a big low, all things considered. Unfortunately, praise was not enough to convince Peacock to give the series another season, which is a shame for anyone who watched the show.

The news, which was first reported by Deadline, comes at a time when fewer and fewer comedy series are getting the green light. Laid followed Hsu's Ruby Yao as she —over the course of the series' 8 episodes — realized that all of her former lovers were dying in unusual ways, forcing her to confront her past (and subsequent sex partners) in order to move forward.

‘Laid’ Canceled At Peacock After One Season
Image
Exclusive: Peacock will not be moving forward with new installments of the freshman series Laid, sources reveal to Deadline.

Laid, starring and executive produced by Stephanie Hsu, premiered on December 19 with all 8 episodes available to stream. While Laid boasted a talented ensemble cast, a catchy title, and a must-stream playlist, the rom-com failed to make the Nielsen streaming rankings, nor did it generate as much buzz as other projects from co-showrunners, executive producers, and writers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna. It is as yet unknown if the show will be shopped around.

The 8-episode series follows Ruby Yao (Hsu), a woman who finds out her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go back through her sex timeline to confront her past in order to move forward. The series, hosted by comedian Vic Michaelis, has been submitted for consideration in the outstanding talk series category for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, where it will face off against ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and last year’s winner, Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” This marks the show’s first time competing in the full-length variety talk category after previously entering in short form fields.

Meanwhile, Dropout’s flagship game show series “Game Changer,” which returns for its seventh season on April 7, will not be eligible for Emmy consideration this year. Under Television Academy rules for the outstanding game show category,...

Every Taylor Swift Acting Role, Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Two decades into her career, there isn't much Taylor Swift hasn't done. She's won album of the year at the Grammys a record-breaking four times, grossed over $2 billion with The Eras Tour, and incited economic boosts in cities, the vinyl record industry, and the NFL. The one thing Swift has yet to achieve is a major role in film or television, having only dipped her toes in acting throughout her long career.

It's not rare for musicians to transition to acting careers, as evidenced by the likes of Justin Timberlake and Madonna. However, for Swift, her massive celebrity status can be seen as distracting to some filmmakers, which is why the "Twilight" movies turned down a cameo from the then-country star. By her own admission, Swift tends to prefer to be in the director's chair, telling Martin McDonagh for Variety's Directors on Directors, "I've been part of things where you didn't know the script,...

She works alongside her best friend, Aj, and her ex, Richie, to figure out why the characters she slept with are dropping dead in hilarious and absurd ways. ‘Laid’ Cast And Guest Stars: From Kate Berlant To John Early
Image
Peacock’s new dark comedy Laid stars the ensemble cast of Stephanie Hsu, Zosia Mamet, Tommy Martinez and Michael Angarano.

Hsu portrays Ruby, a somewhat selfish woman in her 30s who works as an event coordinator, and Zosia Mamet portrays her best friend Aj, who has an intense fascination with true crime. Aj is the one to point out the trend of Ruby’s former partners dying, which makes the premise of the show. Isaac (Tommy Martinez) starts out as one of Ruby’s clients, but he soon gets dragged into the chaos of Ruby’s wake. Michael Angarano’s Richie returns to Ruby’s life as a staple in helping her figure out her past.

‘Laid’ Showrunners on Capturing the ‘Bleak and Funny’ Truth of Dating in Their Sex-Positive Rom-Com
Image
“Laid” follows Stephanie Hsu’s Ruby as she comes to the grim realization that a growing number of her ex-partners have become victim to various maladies — all of which have resulted in death.

But instead of sex-shaming, co-showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna (“Son of Zorn”) used the outlandish premise — which originated from an Australian format — as an opportunity for Ruby to reflect on her behavior during each relationship, serving as a jumping off point for some internal growth.

“From the beginning, we, the writers, Peacock and Stephanie, wanted this to be sex positive, not at all shaming, not at all judgmental,” Bradford McKenna told TheWrap. “In having to go back and look at all these guys and girls, it’s not so much, ‘Who were they and what happened?’ but ‘Who was I when I was with them?'”

As Ruby and her best friend and roommate Aj...

“I don’t know anything about love,” laments Stephanie Hsu’s character Ruby at the conclusion of Peacock’s new romantic comedy series “Laid.” The eight-episode season dropped in its entirety on December 19 and follows’s Hsu’s Ruby as she realizes everyone she’s ever slept with, including Michael Angarano, pro wrestler Ettore “Big E” Ewin and, inexplicably, John Early, are dying.

It’s a grand gesture for the ages,...

Why Laid's Barbie, MCU & Other Guest Stars Are More Than Cameos Explained By Creators Of Dark Comedy With 95% Rt Score

Once all of her former sex partners start dying off, often in strange ways, Ruby and her roommate Aj (Zosia Mamet) try to solve the mystery of what's going on.

In an interview with Screen Rant's Grant Hermanns, Khan and McKenna talk about why some of the guest appearances from the likes of Shang-Chi and Barbie star Simu Liu are more than just cameos. ‘Laid’ Co-Stars Stephanie Hsu And Zosia Mamet Unpack Ruby And Aj’s “Love Story Of Chosen Family”
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains light spoilers for Laid on Peacock.

Peacock’s Laid, from executive producers and co-showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, presents quite a messy premise.

Stephanie Hsu’s main character Ruby, a professional party coordinator, discovers with the help of her best friend Aj (Zosia Mamet) that all the people she has ever had sex with are dying — in the order that she slept with them. Aj helps Ruby set out on a quest to warn all her past partners of this mysterious phenomenon, which Ruby does not want to keep happening, and in the process, the two friends discover more about themselves. Add innocent and sensitive Isaac (Tommy Martinez) and Ruby’s rough-around-the-edges ex-boyfriend Richie (Michael Angarano) to the mix, and comedic chaos ensues.

“It’s a love story of chosen family, and when you’re looking for love in a romantic way, you...

Stephanie Hsu Sex Comedy ‘Laid’ Strikes a Scattered Tone with a Morbid Premise: TV Review
Image
Ruby Yao (Stephanie Hsu), the protagonist of the Peacock comedy “Laid,” is variously described as “selfish,” “a nightmare,” “the worst person I have ever met” and belonging “in jail.” Hsu’s performance and Ruby’s characterization as a whole are indeed intensely off-putting, in ways both intentional and not. But Ruby’s karmic comeuppance in this series, adapted by sitcom veterans Nahnatchka Khan (“Fresh off the Boat”) and Sally Bradford McKenna (“The Goldbergs”) from an Australian show of the same name, doesn’t affect her directly. Instead, everyone she’s ever slept with starts to die — often in outlandish ways, always in the order she had sex with them.

This morbid premise evokes the late, great “Lovesick.” But unlike that British series, in which the hero’s Sti leads him to revisit past relationships, the heightened stakes of “Laid” present a tonal hurdle the eight-episode season proves unable to surmount.

‘Laid’ Review: Peacock’s Dark Comedy Gets Tangled in Its Own Web
Image
The press materials for Peacock’s “Laid” call it “a f*cked up rom-com where the answer to, ‘Why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?’ is a resounding ‘Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.'”

That dramatic irony hovers over the series, which has plenty of entertaining kernels — mysterious deaths, female friendship, and something called a “blowjob overlay” — but spends a lot of time on the uncomfortable reality of a person who is the problem and refuses to do the requisite work to get better.

“Laid” comes from co-showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, based on the Australian series from Marieke Hardy and Kirsty Fisher. Ruby (Stephanie Hsu) is your average beleaguered millennial woman looking for love, except for one thing: Her exes start mysteriously dying. Along with best friend and true-crime fanatic A.J. (Zosia Mamet) — from whom she’s keeping...

Image
In Peacock’s new dark comedy series Laid, Stephanie Hsu stars as a woman who finds out that her former lovers are dying in unusual ways, and, in order to fix it, she must go back through her sex timeline to confront her past.

Michael Angarano, John Early and Brandon Perea are among her character’s love interests, as well as a surprise onscreen face: Finneas O’Connell, the musical superstar and 10-time Grammy winner for his work with sister Billie Eilish.

At the show’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, co-showrunner Nahnatchka Khan told The Hollywood Reporter that the idea to bring Finneas onto the show was pitched by the series’ casting directors after the star had previously acted in projects including Glee, Modern Family and Bad Teacher.

“I thought he was just a full musician, and they were like, ‘He’s great,'” Khan continued. “So he read it,...

The 15 Best TV Shows Of 2024, Ranked
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

How should we face the future that's to come? If the TV shows that moved us in 2024 are any indication, the answer involves collective action, the preservation of hope and anger, and -- as shows like "Evil" and "English Teacher" effortlessly remind us -- the ability to laugh in the face of the absurd. It seems likely that the creators making our favorite shows didn't foresee some of this year's most dystopic global and national events, but their art speaks to a world in unprecedented chaos nonetheless. Whether you're more into the stalwart mottos of Starfleet, the unspoken camaraderie between the vulnerable women of Ennis, Alaska, or the "okey-dokey" attitude of Vault 33's best and brightest, the best television of 2024 offered a number of stirring solutions to the question we're all anxious to ask: how the hell do we get through this?...

In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Angarano reflected on starring as young Elliot, Jack McFarland’s (Seam Hayes) son on the hit show, noting:

“Oh man, that show was majorly influential on my life… definitely, obviously, my career. It had just such great reach and people to this day talk about that show… [they] see me on that show and that character.
