Actor John Krasinski, best known for his role as Jim Halpert in The Office, has taken up an on-stage role headlining the Off-Broadway play Angry Alan.
Written by Penelope Skinner, Angry Alan sees Krasinski portray the character Roger, a man desperately seeking stability and finding it in the titular fictional internet personality, who spouts conspiracy theories. As Roger’s worldview shifts with Angry Alan’s preachings, his newfound perspective begins to take a toll on his relationships. A one-man performance, Krasinski was immediately taken with the story, telling The New York Theatre Guide, “I think I signed on in the first four pages.”
Krasinski’s last appearance off-Broadway was in 2016 for the drama Dry Powder.
In conversation with The New York Theatre Guide, Angry Alan’s director Sam Gold described Roger as a main character: “He’s really an everyman, a regular guy who’s gone through a really hard...

Performances are now underway for John Krasinski in Penelope Skinner’s Angry Alan, directed by Sam Gold. This inaugural production at Studio Seaview plays through August 3. Roger is divorced, demoted, and drifting—lost in an era that no longer makes sense. But when an online personality promises clarity, Roger dives in without looking back. Timely, provocative, and darkly comedic, Angry Alan explores one man’s journey down the digital rabbit hole—examining how far he's willing to go, and how much he's prepared to lose, for validation in a world where “everybody’s changing the rules. Angry Alan features scenic design by Tony Award nominee dots, costume design by Qween Jean, lighting design by Tony Award nominee Isabella Byrd, sound design by Tony Award nominee Mikaal Sulaiman, video design by Tony Award nominee Lucy Mackinnon, properties by Addison Heeren, with Niamh Jones as associate...

Roger’s ex-wife had a bad case of postpartum depression. “That was very challenging for me,” he says. And, speaking of his ex, Roger has just had a big realization: “The system is now so rigged in women’s favor.” To him, not only do women have it all these days, they also hypocritically want it all. “She wants to be president,” Roger explains, speaking incredulously of a general she, “but she also wants to be spanked on the bottom.”
In other words, Roger sucks. And as played by John Krasinski, it’s also a perverse pleasure to spend 85 increasingly distressing minutes with him in Penelope Skinner’s tricksy new play Angry Alan.
The title character, never seen or heard on stage, is a leader in the digital manosphere, where disaffected men are fed endless content about how they’re “intrinsically good” despite their victimization in America’s “gynocentric” culture.

Exclusive: Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James are joining forces to star in a scorching new play by Penelope Skinner, directed by Ian Rickson, that will open in London’s West End in the fall.
Pretty hot names to have atop a theater marquee, that’s for sure.
The drama, called Lyonesse, will open at the Harold Pinter Theatre in late September or early October. Official dates are being determined.
In this new work, Skinner — who won the George Devine Award for most promising playwright in 2011 for The Village Bike — focuses on Elaine (Scott Thomas), a reclusive and brilliant actress who disappeared from public view under mysterious circumstances.
Elaine summons Kate (James), a young film executive, to her remote Cornish estate to facilitate “her glorious comeback,” according to a production source who copped me a premise of the play.
“But who really controls the stories we tell and how we get to tell them?...

After its first ever virtual Showcase earlier this year, the 2022 BBC Studios Showcase will also be fully digital, the outfit revealed on Tuesday.
The producer-distributor will hold a three-day program of virtual events running from Feb. 28-March 2, rather than host global buyers in person at its usual Liverpool extravaganza. While the event is still at least six months out, sources tell Variety the company needed to let its suppliers know well in advance.
“We’re proud that BBC Studios Showcase has made the U.K. a key destination for the world’s content buyers but the pandemic has accelerated changes in the way we can help them discover our shows,” said Paul Dempsey, president of global distribution for BBC Studios.
“Their terrific response to our virtual Showcase earlier this year, coupled with continued uncertainty around international travel means that we will once again bring our content to customers digitally next February.

The series follows Ralph, played by Leon Harrop, and Katie, played Sarah Gordy, as they embark on the biggest adventure of their lives, having just had the wedding of the year. Each 30-minute episode features a different story focusing on the domestic challenges faced by the newlyweds – challenges faced by all newlyweds, but with the added fact that they have Down’s Syndrome.

“I do that with people I admire,” Gerwig said. “I was writing a lot. I was asking her about how she does what she does. Does she do it first thing in the morning in longhand, or many computer drafts? I was being nerdy and needy, and she was answering and being very kind.
“Then she grabbed me by the arm and looked me in the eyes and asked me, ‘What do you really want to ask me about?’ My blood ran cold. ‘You really want to ask me about directing.’
‘How do you know that?’
‘I’m part gypsy and it’s written all over you!

It's not exactly a spoiler to note that the closing scene of Penelope Skinner's wonderfully absorbing and issue-oriented dramatic comedy, Linda, has the title character, a successful marketing executive, addressing a group of colleagues in the year 2007, excited about how the anti-aging cream she promotes has been putting out the message that the beauty in all women of all ages is a cause for celebration.

Linda is a marketing executive who, a decade ago, created an award-winning campaign that made Swan beauty products famous “for making women feel good.” Linda was also responsible for spearheading the Confidence Building Workshops that changed “the world one girl at a time. And next: One 50-year-old woman at a time!” she boasts with brimming confidence. The title character in Penelope Skinner’s play “Linda,” which had its American premiere Tuesday at the Manhattan Theatre Club, keeps referring to this groundbreaking ad campaign throughout the production’s two-and-a-half-hour running time. Skinner and her character (Janie Dee) never reveal exactly how such marketing would.

We chat to the cast of Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong’s university-set comedy drama, Fresh Meat, which returns tonight on Channel 4…
Fresh Meat’s characters have been doomed from day one. It’s right there in the title. Ushering in his new seminar group in the first episode, the studiously irreverent Professor Shales calls, “Send in the fresh meat for the grinder”.
It might be the line of a try-hard iconoclast (Shales’ next move is the classic shock-Doc act of binning their essays. Take that, convention), but the words tell a truth never far from Fresh Meat’s cringe comedy. That, as the hapless products of an industrial process that leaves them indebted and scrabbling for ever-distant opportunity, today’s graduates are being shafted.
“There’s compassion for students in the writing,” says Joe Thomas, who plays indie kid undergrad Kingsley. “Particularly in this series,...

The last series saw Oregon (Charlotte Ritchie) striving to become Student Union President, and her campaign was successful. Now planning her legacy she seeks the support of Support Officer Rosa, played by Ayda Field.
Rosa is a strong minded, no nonsense woman, and when Oregon’s ambitions and self-aggrandizing plans start to overshadow her responsibilities, tensions rise between the president and her aide! To paraphrase Stephen Sondheim: Another theater season just got off of the train. But the start of the 2014-15 season is already threatening to jump off the track a little. After Sunday night’s mixed-results Tonys ceremony (No “in memoriam” segment? And did we really need to see Hugh Jackman embarrass himself rap?), the Tony administration committee announced that they would be discontinuing the sound design categories, to much consternation; in fact, 19,000 theater professionals and fans have already signed a petition to reinstate them, and the number keeps growing. (Ironic, too, as the Tony telecast at Radio City Music...

It’s no spoiler to report that the final stage direction of Penelope Skinner’s play The Village Bike, brought over from London by McC Theater and starring Greta Gerwig, is “Mike wanks.” The whole thing’s about wanking: pleasure and self-pleasure. It starts, hilariously, with a young couple negotiating sex during the first days of the wife’s pregnancy, which has turned Becky ravenous but left John repelled. (He says he’s afraid of killing the baby.) Out comes the collection of porn DVDs, stored in a box marked as wedding crockery; this does not solve the problem. It does, however, get us merrily through the next few scenes, which riff on the ridiculous set-ups and dim double entendres of the genre. To Becky, everything looks like a hookup about to happen. The plumber who arrives to fix the couple’s clanking pipes keeps using the word moist. And...
