New York, Sep 5 (Ians) Chinese sensation Zheng Qinwen advanced to the US Open quarterfinals, securing a straight-set victory over fifth seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, 6-2, 6-4. This marked Zheng’s debut win against a top 10 player and her first time reaching the final eight of a Grand Slam event, reports Xinhua.

“Right now, I just feel super happy and excited to play in the big stadium and had a really good performance today,” said the 21-year-old Zheng during her on-court interview at the Louis Armstrong Stadium after her notable win.

“I love the name ‘queen Wen’. Come on, it’s queen,” Zheng remarked when asked about her popular nickname.

Zheng is set to face Aryna Sabalenka on Wednesday for a semifinal spot after the Belarusian second seed breezed past Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-3.

New York, Sep 3 (Ians) Daniil Medvedev took a sledgehammer to Sebastian Baez’s 12-match winning streak inside Arthur Ashe Stadium late Saturday night, defeating the Argentine 6-2, 6-1 7-6(6) to power into the fourth round of the US Open.

After a subdued opening two sets, Baez took the fight to Medvedev in the third, hitting bigger forehands and coming to net 17 times, nearing the 18 total net visits he made in the first two rounds.

Baez led 5-2 in the third set but his momentum was halted by a 10-minute delay for light rain. When play resumed Medvedev broke to get back on serve at 4-5, fended off one set point in the following game, and dug out of a 0/30 hole in his next service game.

Baez made a number of tired unforced errors at key moments, including at 6/6 serving in the tie-break.

Umag (Croatia), July 30 (Ians) Stan Wawrinka produced a commanding performance to beat Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 6-4 at the Croatia Open to advance to his first Atp Tour final since he reached two in 2019, here.

Through to his 31st tour-level final (16-14), and his 14th on clay (7-6), Wawrinka is seeking his first title since he won Geneva in 2017.

The Swiss will meet Alexei Popyrin in the title match. Sunday’s final will be Wawrinka’s first since he underwent two left-foot surgeries in 2021 and fell out of the Top 300 of the Atp Rankings.

“I’m happy with the match. I think I played really well, the best match of the week,” said Wawrinka, who has moved up 23 places to No. 49 in the Atp Rankings behind his four straight-set wins this week.

Paris, June 1 (Ians) Former champion Novak Djokovic and World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz continued their pursuit of the French Open title and the chance to become World No.1 as they both advanced to the third round at the Roland Garros here.

Djokovic overcame a pulsating first-set challenge from Marton Fucsovics before accelerating to an ultimately comfortable 7-6(2), 6-0, 6-3 second-round victory on Wednesday night.

Playing on Court Philippe Chatrier just before him, Alcaraz recovered from a mid-match dip to book his spot in the third round in Paris for the third consecutive year.

After clinching the opening set, the top seed suffered a loss of concentration in the second set against Taro Daniel. However, the 20-year-old quickly improved his level to advance past the Japanese star 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Two-time French Open champion Djokovic, who also has a chance of becoming the first man in the history of Open Era tennis to achieve the triple career Grand Slam, dispatched Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(1) in the first round on Court Philippe Chatrier at the Roland Garros here.

Madrid, April 30 (Ians) Women’s World No.1 Iga Swiatek came back from a service break down early in the first set to overcome No.29 seed Bernarda Pera 6-3, 6-2 in the third round of the Madrid Open here on Sunday.

With this win the Polish star extended her clay-court winning streak this season to six after winning against her opponent from the United States, thus clinching her place in the fourth round.

Swiatek needed just 75 minutes to dispatch Pera and move through to a fourth-round meeting with either No.22 seed Zheng Qinwen or No.16 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.

“I wouldn’t say it was easy. Every match is tricky here,” Swiatek said afterwards. “I’m happy that I’m getting my rhythm. Playing against a lefty is never easy…but I’m pretty happy that I was disciplined and focused.”

Dubai, March 3 (Ians) Daniil Medvedev moved to within one win of capturing his third consecutive tour-level title on Friday when he ended Novak Djokovic’s perfect start to the season at the Dubai Tennis Championships, here.

In the 14th chapter of their rivalry, Medvedev was locked in from ball one, triumphing 6-4, 6-4 to extend his winning streak to 13 matches. The third seed stood deep behind the baseline to soak up Djokovic’s ball-striking.

Medvedev committed just 12 unforced errors compared to 38 from Djokovic and he was rapid around the court, chasing down a number of drop shots to advance after one hour and 35 minutes.
