Emma Stone, Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder Submit Multiple Emmy Bids With Drama Series ‘The Curse’ (Exclusive)
Image
Showtime’s satirical thriller “The Curse,” created by stars Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie and also starring Emma Stone, has exclusively shared its Emmy submission plans with Variety.

The three multi-hyphenates will have more than one chance at recognition across various categories for producing, acting, directing, writing and editing.

“The Curse” explores the tumultuous lives of a married couple (Fielder and Stone), who encounter a string of misfortunes while filming an HGTV series in New Mexico. Their challenges are compounded by a dubious “curse” and a manipulative producer (Safdie), which together threaten both the show and their relationship.

Stone, fresh off her second best actress Oscar win for her role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” is eyeing her first Emmy nod. She seeks recognition for her portrayal of Whitney, the co-host of the couple’s show about eco-friendly homes. Additionally, Stone is vying for a guest comedy actress nod for...

Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie Nearly Talked Themselves Out of Making ‘The Curse’
Image
On December 6, the 2023 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 11 filmmakers, creators, and actors for their achievements in creative independence. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.

“I think murder is illegal. I think you can’t murder people.”

That’s Nathan Fielder, using his signature deadpan delivery to land a joke about the complexities of modern legalese. Sitting in an unadorned room somewhere in Los Angeles, with gray stubble to match the streaks in his dark, disheveled hair, the writer, director, and comedian was just explaining how, exactly, they got away with name-checking HGTV in “The Curse” — a series satirizing, among other targets, the kind of home improvement shows that built the cable channel into a reality TV juggernaut.

“[After] ‘Nathan For You,’ I did become a bit of an expert on parody law and fair use,” Fielder said. “I think if you’re making a comment on it,...

‘The Curse’ Series Preview: Cast, Plot, Photos and Trailer
Image
Showtime and A24’s official trailer for the genre-bending series The Curse shows the origin of the show’s title and how one horribly uncharitable act affects the lives of a young couple. The 10-episode series is set to premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime on Friday, November 10, 2023 followed by its linear debut on Showtime on Sunday, November 12 at 10pm Et/Pt.

Co-creators Nathan Fielder (The Rehearsal) and Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer) star alongside Oscar winner Emma Stone (La La Land). Fielder and Stone lead the cast as Asher and Whitney Siegel, the married couple at the center of the story. Safdie plays their friend Dougie, who’s involved with their home improvement show. Barkhad Abdi, Corbin Bernsen, and Constance Shulman appear in guest starring roles.

Showtime describes The Curse as exploring “how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while...
