For all the gloom around the industry, one form of entertainment production in Hollywood is going gangbusters right now: short-form theater. And some otherwise frustrated writers, actors, and directors are rushing in.

Marlena Rodriguez’s credits include serving as a story editor on Silicon Valley and a staff writer on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but she agreed to direct a small stage show at this year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival, Near Sex for Work, because “it’s gratifying to be outputting things I’ve never done before,” she said. “Even though I am talking to my agents about staffing opportunities, I’m getting their feedback that there’s no jobs, we don’t know what to do.”

This year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival, the 15th edition, has a record 416 separate productions playing nearly 2,000 performances at small black box theaters like the Hobgoblin Playhouse, the Hudson or the Broadwater on Santa Monica Boulevard near Vine.

Exclusive: Annie Gonzalez is making her official debut as Jenni Rivera, the legendary Regional Mexican singer known adoringly by her fans as La Diva de la Banda, in the official trailer for the ViX Original Film, Jenni (above). The biopic will premiere via the TelevisaUnivision streamer and select theaters in the U.S. and Mexico on December 6.

The streaming service has cancelled the comedy starring Emily Osment, Gregg Sulkin, Olivia Macklin, Cinthya Carmona, and Michael Hsu Rosen, per Deadline. The series follows a high-brow Harvard graduate (Osment) after she moves in with her sister and her roommates. The first season of 10 episodes was released in October.

The Emily Osment-starring multi-camera comedy Pretty Smart will not be returning to Netflix for a second season, according to TVLine. Created by Jack Dolgen and Doug Mand, the series revolves around Chelsea (Osment), a Harvard-educated, aspiring novelist who moves in with her bubbly and not-so-intellectual sister Claire (Olivia Macklin) after being dumped by her boyfriend. The tough and sometimes stand-offish Chelsea soon finds herself dealing with her carefree sister and her three lovably eccentric roommates. In addition to Osment and Macklin, the cast also included Gregg Sulkin (Faking It) as the distractingly handsome personal trainer Grant, Cinthya Carmona (Greenhouse Academy) as former lawyer turned healer Solana, and Michael Hsu Rosen (Tiny Pretty Things) as social media influencer Jayden. Osment started out as a child actress, co-starring as Gerti Giggles in the Spy Kids sequel movies. She is perhaps best known for playing Lilly Truscott in the Disney Channel television series Hannah Montana.

The sitcom’s 10-episode first season stars Emily Osment (Young & Hungry) as Chelsea, a “smart” girl whose life is turned upside down during a three-day visit with her “pretty” sister Claire, played by Olivia Macklin (Filthy Rich). Netflix announced that the third and final season of “Narcos: Mexico” will premiere on Nov. 5 and released some first looks at the episodes.

This third and final season follows the war that breaks out after Felix’s arrest and the new Mexican kingpins who emerge as newly independent cartels navigate political turmoil and escalating violence.

Returning series regulars include Scoot McNairy, José María Yázpik, Alfonso Dosal, Mayra Hermosillo, Matt Letscher, Manuel Masalva, Alejandro Edda and Gorka Lasaosa. New cast members include Luis Gerardo Méndez, Alberto Guerra and Luisa Rubino, with guest star Bad Bunny aka Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio.

Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough set off on a whirlwind weekend romance in Monday, a romantic drama that IFC Films released in theaters and on-demand Friday.

It’s the fourth feature from director Argyris Papadimitropoulos, who also wrote and produced the film.

Here is the plot: When Mickey (Stan) is dragged away from his DJ set by a drunken friend and introduced to Chloe (Gough) one hot summer night in Athens, the attraction between the pair is immediately palpable. So palpable that before they know it they’re waking up naked on the beach Saturday morning. And so it goes that a one-night stand on Friday turns into a whirlwind weekend romance that leads to serious conversations when they face the harsh sunlight on Monday morning.

Exclusive: Netflix’s multi-camera comedy series from Jack Dolgen, Doug Mand and Kourtney Kang has rounded out its lead cast with the addition of Olivia Macklin, Michael Hsu Rosen and Cinthya Carmona. They will star opposite Emily Osment and Gregg Sulkin in the project, created and written by Dolgen and Mand and directed by Pamela Fryman.

The Untitled Dolgen/Mand/Kang Project centers on a snooty, self-proclaimed intellectual (Osment) forced to move in with her carefree sister and her sister’s lovably eccentric friends, played by Sulkin, Hsu, Rosen and Carmona.

Macklin will play Claire, scatterbrained optimist and the world’s worst waitress (although the customers love her). She lives a carefree life, surrounded by her best friends. Claire is excited at the prospect of finally bonding with her older sister, Chelsea. Like, really really really really excited!

The Film Life Foundation’s inaugural Social Justice Now Film Festival (Sjnff) has unveiled its robust program including its spotlight screenings including the documentaries 40 Years A Prisoner from HBO, Us Kids, and Sncc executive produced by Pharell Williams as well as I Am Other. and the narrative feature Reefa. “The Tax Collector,” an action film directed by David Ayer and starring Shia Labeouf, generated $317,000 at the box office when it debuted in 129 theaters in the United States.

The movie, from Rlje Films, brought in $2,457 from each location — a mix of drive-in venues and traditional theaters. At the Vineland Drive-In in Los Angeles, “The Tax Collector” notched the highest single-day grosses since the theater reopened.

Next weekend, the film will expand to more drive-ins and brick-and-mortar theaters that have reopened. There are currently 1,195 movie theater locations open in North America, and of those, 229 are drive-ins.

On premium video-on-demand services, “The Tax Collector” ranked among the top purchases on many platforms, including Google, iTunes, Amazon and FandangoNow, with reports that it pulled in around $1 million in VOD sales.

The characters behave nonsensically in a world of obvious betrayals. Ayer also tries to incorporate religious and familial themes. It's a disjointed effort that ultimately fails on both counts. We’ve seen Ayer’s best with End of Watch and Fury (plus his script for Training Day), as well as his worst with Suicide Squad (even if that wasn’t completely his fault). His newest outing, The Tax Collector, has several elements of good Ayer, as well as bad Ayer. The end result is a frustrating experience that hints at his talents but manages to let you down. Shia Labeouf can give complex, transportive performances, with rough and edgy bursts of messy antics slathered on top of soul. Sadly, “The Tax Collector” is not “American Honey.” In writer-director David Ayer’s bland L.A. crime saga about a pair of drug lord minions caught in the crosshairs of a larger war, Labeouf stares and struts his way through a cartoonish and culturally insensitive performance as a troublemaking thug named Creeper that most certainly did not require him to get his character’s name tattooed across his chest.

If the two-bit Latino burlesque was the only problem with “The Tax Collector,” it would have to work overtime to make up for it. Yet even when “The Tax Collector” finds a steadier purpose as a taut revenge thriller, it’s mostly just a slog of vulgar threats and violent outbursts, trading substance for anger until the credits bring some measure of peace.

Accurate multicultural representation in Hollywood starts crucially with hiring communities of color to make and star in films, “Suicide Squad” and “Bright” director David Ayer said Thursday at the ArcLight drive-in premiere of his new Los Angeles-based crime drama, “The Tax Collector.”

Indeed, the film, an intense crime drama from Suicide Squad director David Ayer, is a Southern California-set tragedy with quite the ace in its hole with a maniacally unhinged performance by Shia Labeouf.

Ayer, best known for the aforementioned Dceu outing, along with Will-Smith-starring (and sequel-set) Netflix feature Bright and Brad Pitt-headlined WWII epic Fury, makes a thematic reprisal of sorts with written/directorial offering The Tax Collector, which returns him to the wheelhouse of his earlier urban-action efforts like Street Kings, End of the Watch and Sabotage. David Ayer seems to have pulled off another Jared Leto-style Joker transformation with Shia Labeouf for The Tax Collector. The director posted the very first picture of Shia Labeouf from the film, and he's covered in a bunch of tattoos. The young actor can be seen sitting down, wearing only shorts, chains, and sunglasses while smoking a cigarette. The image is pretty striking, making Labeouf look like a man that you don't want to cross paths with.

The new David Ayer film The Tax Collector was announced back at the end of June and remains to be a bit mysterious. The project is a crime thriller written, produced and directed by Ayer. In addition to Shia Labeouf, the movie also stars Bobby Soto, Chelsea Rendon, Cinthya Carmona, Lana Parrilla, Gabriela Flores, and George Lopez. However, it is not clear what any of their roles are at this point in time.

Actress Cinthya Carmona (Hulu’s East Los High) has been cast in David Ayer’s crime thriller The Tax Collector, joining Shia Labeouf, Bobby Soto and Chelsea Rendon. Not much is known about the plot other then it harkens to Ayer’s earlier gritty crime thrillers Training Day and End of Watch. Production is set to being this summer in La. Cross Creek Pictures is financing the project and co-producing with Ayer and Chris Long’s Cedar Park Entertainment. Carmona is repped by Innovative Artists, Bodhi Entertainment and Klevan Longarzo.

The East Los High TV show has been cancelled after four seasons by Hulu. Although there will be no fifth season, the East Los High official Twitter page has confirmed it will return for a special finale event episode, so there should be some closure for fans.
