The Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (Laliff) announced the call for submissions for its third annual Laliff Inclusion Fellowship which aims to champion underrepresented filmmakers within the Latino community. With continued support from Netflix’s Fund for Creative Equity, ten visionary self-identifying Indigenous Latino and Afro/Black Latino directors will each be awarded 30,000 for the production of their short films.
“Last year, Laliff and Netflix expanded the Inclusion fellowship by adding the Indigenous Latino cohort to the existing Afro/Black Latino cohort with the goal of uplifting Latino voices and moving representation forward. As we begin our third year, we are proud to announce the fellows will be receiving larger grants in order to bring their stories to life. It is fantastic to see Netflix realize the need to invest more in the Latino community and our stories,” says Academy Award®-nominated actor, founder of the Latino Film Institute (Lfi) and co-founder of Laliff,...

It feels like there is a different film festival opening or closing its doors every other week in New York. Starting a new one might seem redundant but 30UNDER30 is really one of a kind. The fest is showcasing 30 short films from 30 filmmakers under 30 years old. Running this weekend the two-day event includes three film programs, a free panel discussion, after parties and an awards ceremony.
Sebastian Rea, a 24 year-old Ecuadorian-born and New York-raised filmmaker founded the festival to showcase young talent, “I started this festival because I wanted to specifically spotlight young emerging directors like myself and create a platform that engages the larger community with our work. We are the next wave of talent with unique voices and perspectives and we want to share our visions with the world.”
One of the shorts playing on Opening Night is the result of a pretty incredible and fortuitous opportunity. Brandon Polanco was working as a Production Assistant last year on a feature film that halted production due to Hurricane Sandy. One of the film's stars, Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston decided to produce a short film to pass the time and asked people to submit scripts. Polanco's script was chosen and he went from P.A. to Director. His short film Writer's Block stars Cranston and is screening as part of Friday's program.
Of the 30 short films screening at 30UNDER30 ten of them are from Latino filmmakers. We highlight these shorts below.
