He counts the numbers of steps she walks from the bus stop to her home in the chawl. She counts the number of missing buttons in his shirts and holes in his vest. East or 'vest', Shiva and Astha, played by two enormously talented newcomers Meezaan and Sharmin, are diehard romantics, the kind that would easily die for love.
There is a purity of the heart and a sublimity of the soul in this love story, a remake of the beautiful but melodramatic Tamil hit "7G Rainbow Colony". "Malaal" wins you over not by being persuasive but simply letting the love grow organically from its natural environment, in this case, a Mumbai chawl shot with a glowing, raging but restrained passion by cinematographer Ragul Dharuman who sees a glimmer of hope in every shot but refuses to romanticise squalor just to amplify the sentimental value of the story.

Imtiaz Ali is not the only leading filmmaker who has agreed to unconditionally support Mangesh Hadawale's globally feted drama Dekh Indian Circus.
After Vivek Oberoi's unceremonious ouster as the film's co-producer the team was desperately looking for a known celebrity face for the film. After Imtiaz Ali, it's Vidhu Vinod Chopra who has agreed to support the film in every way possible.
Recently, Chopra was shown portions of the film and he insisted that the trailer of Dekh Indian Dekh (Dic) be attached to the new Vidhu Vinod Chopra production Ferrari Ki Sawaari which opens this Friday, thereby throwing the entire Dic team into a tizzy.
Says the film's producer Mahavir Jain, "Frankly, we were taken aback when after seeing bits of our film Vinod Chopraji insisted that our trailer not only be attached to Ferrari Ki Sawaari but that our trailer would be screened in theatres immediately before their feature film starts.

Mangesh Hadawale's utterly charming and gorgeously photographed Dekh Indian Circus, which recently screened at the 12th New York Indian Film Festival (Nyiff), is rather innocuous on its surface: a seemingly simple story of a poor mother taking her kids to see the circus, and of the misadventures they encounter along the way. But go a little deeper, and you will find a bitter pill of caustic social satire and sharp political commentary on the millions of people still left behind in India's modern era of technologically driven progress. The film's most pointed barbs are aimed squarely at the corrupt politicians who gain power through voter manipulation and naked bribery. These snake-oil salesmen, along with megaphone-blaring caravans, travel to poor villages every few years in appeals...

In this age of cut throat competition, big egos and bigger rivalries, it is heartwarming to see one creative mind support another in pursuit of artistic brilliance. Imtiaz Ali has found a new passion project: not a film that he has written or directed, but one that he has fallen in love with so much that he is presenting the film. The film is called Dekh Indian Circus, and is the second film of National award winning director Mangesh Hadawale, who won universal acclaim for his debut Tingya.

New Delhi, May 11: It is a film he hasn't written, directed or produced. But filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is so touched with Mangesh Hadawale's Hindi movie "Dekh Indian Circus", a tale set in the rural milieu of Rajasthan, that he has decided to present and promote it to take it to a larger audience.
"I'm trying to help this film reach big circles. It is set in Jaisalmer, and is about two kids and an Indian circus. The story has been narrated in an extremely colourful and emotional manner and it is only better that it reaches to a wide audience," Ali told Ians over phone from Mumbai.

Vikas Bahl's Chillar Party which was co-produced by Salman and Mangesh Hadawale's Dekh Indian Circus which was co-produced by Vivek Oberoi are locked in a strange and unexpected fight to the finish. Great filmmakers from Dadasaheb Phalke to Akira Kurosawa rest on a wall at his office in a large collage of filmmakers that he admires. Mangesh Hadawale, who started with national award-winning Tingya is now basking in the response his second feature Dekh Indian Circus received at Busan International Film Festival. A story of motherly love and sacrifice that portrays a rural family’s struggle to take the children to a circus in town won the Audience Choice award at the festival. Hadawale talks about his film here:
Where did the journey of Dekh Indian Circus begin?
The story came to me long back when I saw two kids with a woman standing in queue for museum tickets in Pune. I started sketching characters in my head and though I couldn’t follow their conversation, I had imagined a story about them.

Vivek Oberoi seems to be going through a purple patch of late with him being part of films like Zilla Ghaziabad, the eagerly anticipated Krissh sequel and Gyarah Challis Ki Last Metro, the sequel of the critically acclaimed Ek Challis Ki Last Local. In between all of this, Vivek has quietly gone ahead and produced a short film that was selected to be screened at the prestigious 16th 'Busan International Film Festival' in Korea. These days every actor who's turned producer has been busy publicising his every move, in contrast Vivek has gone completely unnoticed about his maiden production which is heartening to see. Watch Indian Circus directed by Mangesh Hadawale follows the fortunes of an impoverished couple who dream of one day being able to afford to take their children to the circus. Set against the backdrop of a corrupt local election; the film at its core is an...
