Somebody ought to tell Bill Maher and Rob Schneider that the real cancel culture is in Brazil. According to EuroWeekly, comedian Leo Lins has been sentenced to eight years in jail for inciting intolerance with his offensive jokes.
Earlier this week, Lins received his punishment for a comedy special that targeted — deep breath here — Black people, obese people, elderly people, people with HIV, homosexuals, evangelicals, Indigenous communities, people from the impoverished northeast of Brazil, Jews and people with disabilities. Lins wasn’t trying to simply win the game but was trying to fill the entire bingo card.
A federal court in São Paulo ruled that Lins’s right to freedom of expression was not absolute, and “cannot be used as an excuse to make hateful, prejudiced and discriminatory remarks.” His jokes had consequences, the court ruled, declaring that the comedian’s YouTube special helped fuel “the spread of verbal violence in society and promote intolerance.

With less than four weeks until the festival begins, Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival has added new shows to its lineup, including top stand-up performances, Netflix series cast events, as well as a free outdoor fan experience. The festival, which now boasts over 250 live shows across over 30 venues covering Los Angeles, is produced by Netflix in association with Live Nation.
One of the added highlights of the event is the Billy Eichner-hosted Stand Out: An LGBTQ + Celebration. The celebration is happening in 2022, (although postponed from 2020) in the wake of the October 2021 Netflix controversy that saw LGBTQ employees stage an office walkout due to what they considered to be transphobic content during Dave Chappelle’s Netflix comedy special, The Closer. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos received backlash due to two internal emails — sent out on the same day and leaked days apart — in which he defended Chappelle and argued that...

Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary (Exterminadores do Além Contra a Loira do Banheiro) is a Brazilian export from Fabrício Bittar (Como se Tornar o Pior Aluno da Escola) who also writes along with Andre Catarinacho and Danilo Gentili. It’s a slapstick comedy horror film that’s as juvenile and dumb as you’re going to find, but hey… I sometimes enjoy a juvenile and dumb comedy flick. Bring it on.
The story itself follows four kind-of-but-struggling-to-remain-successful YouTubers who, once they begin to make money on the YouTube platform start to see their subscriptions and views jumping ship and dwindling, so in order to attempt to pull back the subscribers and after a television deal, they take on the spooky case of Bloody Mary. I mean, that’s basically what this is all about.
