‘Miguel Wants to Fight’ Review: Hulu’s Energetic Action Comedy Has Surprising Heart
Image
The rules of the streets are clear: If a brawl ensues, you fight too. It doesn’t matter who threw the first punch or instigated the fracas. A blow at your friend is an attack on the group.

It’s odd, then, that Miguel (Tyler Dean Flores), the protagonist of Miguel Wants to Fight, a spry and entertaining film directed by Oz Rodriguez, has never even thrown a punch. His friends aren’t habitual fighters, but even they’ve found themselves in the middle of a melee or two. Plus, Miguel’s dad (Raúl Castillo) runs a boxing studio and the kid’s obsessed with Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.

So, what gives? Is it inexperience? (Yes). Lack of confidence? (That too). Fear? (Bingo).

In Miguel Wants to Fight, the eponymous character seeks out a skirmish to avoid telling his friends about his family’s impending move. It’s a...

Disney streaming users can be forgiven for hoping that last week was just a dream that they’ll wake up from soon. The House of Mouse announced a new wave of price increases for all of its streaming services last week, though the ad-supported plans of Disney+ and Hulu will remain unchanged.

Elsewhere in Hollywood, the top writers’ and actors’ unions in the business remain on strike, with no end in sight. Representatives for the Writers Guild of America resumed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (which represents major studios) on Friday, which is at least a step in the right direction. It may not be in time to save the entire fall programming schedule, but there are several new shows and movies headed to streaming this week to help viewers distract themselves in the meantime!

‘Miguel Wants to Fight’ Boss Says Teen ‘Emotions & Violence’ Inspired Action Comedy
Image
“People jump in, you jump in. That’s the rule.” So says one of high schooler Miguel’s punch-happy pals at the start of Hulu’s bawdy comedy flick Miguel Wants to Fight (premiering August 16). But Miguel has never jumped in. That realization is a shock to his three best friends—ex-boxer David (Christian Vunipola), scrappy Cass (Imani Lewis), and sharp-tongued Srini (Suraj Partha)—who swear they’ve seen the guy throw at least one punch. Later, when Miguel gets the upsetting news that he’s moving hours away from Syracuse with his family, he decides to try to get into his first fight instead of telling his friends. Conveniently, he lives in a neighborhood where everyone, and we mean everyone, is always getting into a scrap. “Miguel is surrounded by fighting. That’s something we wanted to enforce, even in the murals that he walks by,” director Oz Rodriguez says.

Joel Courtney & Kat McNamara's Movie Star Movie Critics Movie Review: Ender's Game
Joel Courtney from Super 8 and Contest star Katherine McNamara are KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics. Here is their take on Ender's Game.

"Ender's Game is an amazing movie. The plot was surprisingly similar to that of the book, and the CGI effects were incredible. Every element of this film was impeccable. The special effects in the war room and the cadet training arena are stunning. The score is perfectly suited to the pace of the movie. The performances of the star-studded cast certainly do not disappoint either. The adults Harrison Ford, Viola Davis, and Ben Kingsley all gave incredible performances Of course, we expected nothing less from such legends of the craft. But it was the younger actors including Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Moises Arias, Aramis Knight, and Suraj Partha who stole the show. They truly show the power of a strong youth ensemble cast in film.

Ender's Game Plummets on Second Weekend in North America: Sequel Chances?
‘Ender’s Game’ movie to go the way of ‘John Carter,’ ‘The Golden Compass’? (Photo: Ben Kingsley and Asa Butterfield in ‘Ender’s Game’) Directed by Gavin Hood and starring Asa Butterfield and Harrison Ford, Ender’s Game is going the way of Andrew Stanton’s John Carter and Chris Weitz’s The Golden Compass at the domestic box office. After opening with a disappointing $27.01 million last weekend (including Thursday evening shows), the $110 million-budgeted was down a whopping 62% this past weekend, November 8-10, 2013, collecting a paltry $10.25 million from 3,407 theaters (no reduction in number of venues) according to box office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. One can blame Alan Taylor’s Thor: The Dark World, but the action fantasy starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Tom Hiddleston wasn’t the sole culprit. After all, Ender’s Game was already trailing both Last Vegas and Bad Grandpa last Thursday. After two weekends,...

Orson Scott Card Won't Make Any Money Off Ender's Game Box Office Success
Back in July, we reported that the Lgbt community is boycotting Summit Entertainment's Ender's Game, because of author Orson Scott Card's controversial views on homosexuality and same-sex marriage. A new report reveals that the writer won't be receiving any back end compensation for the adaptation.

The Lbgt boycott was staged because they didn't want to see the writer receiving any money for the sci-fi thriller, which stars Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley. However, it turns out he was never set to get any additional compensation anyway, because the original deal he signed more than 10 years ago didn't have a stipulation for any back end payments.

Other individuals close to the project stated that, while Orson Scott Card did have a producing credit, he had practically no creative input in the production. There was speculation that his deal included "escalators," which would have paid the author if...

Despite Controversy Surrounding Anti-Gay Author Card, Ender's Game to Top Domestic Box Office - But Are Sequels Likely?
‘Ender’s Game’ movie box office: Adaptation of sci-fi novel by controversial anti-gay author Orson Scott Card tops (modest) domestic box office chart — but will that be enough to spawn a film franchise? Review of Ender's Game Film Adaptation: As Complex as Allowed in Today's Hollywood (Not Exactly a Compliment)
‘Ender’s Game’ movie review: Sci-fier displays ‘steel-grey self-seriousness,’ but fails to explore ‘disturbing brutality’ at its core (photo: Asa Butterfield and Abigail Breslin in ‘Ender’s Game’) Orson Scott Card’s sci-fi novel Ender’s Game was published in 1985, and in the 28 years that elapsed before the book became a film, the idea of children trained to fight by orders of an unfeeling government has been repeatedly co-opted, most notably by a certain tale of a beautiful young archer named Katniss. Indeed, comparisons between Ender’s Game and The Hunger Games are inevitable, but the key similarity between the two is that neither film really explores or, in the case of The Hunger Games, even acknowledges the disturbing brutality that lies at the core of their intricately-constructed worlds. To its credit, Ender’s Game, under the clean, straightforward direction of Gavin Hood (one of the X-Men movies, it’s...

I was nervous bringing this up to Harrison Ford who plays Colonel Graff in the upcoming film, .Ender.s Game. opening Friday, Nov. 1st. I enjoyed the movie.s many great themes including compassion and peace. That.s why it behooves everyone that the book.s author, Orson Scott Card, made his anti-gay marriage comments publicly. Take a look at the interview below:

‘Ender’s Game’ Review
Stars: Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Aramis Knight, Suraj Partha, Moises Arias | Written and Directed by Gavin Hood

Already saddled with the “Star Wars meets Harry Potter” moniker which may get initial bums on seats but will surely risk alienating those who did encounter it, Ender’s Game instead emerges as a morally complex and thematically rich film which certainly gets itself lost in translation from its original source in spots but emerges as one of the oddest and boldest kids films of recent years, recalling the likes of Gil Kenan’s underseen and underrated City of Ember more than the aforementioned franchises used in the film’s marketing.

Based on an immensely popular book by now infamous not very nice guy Orson Scott Card, Gavin Hood’s adaptation gives us plenty of whizz and bang but also quite a lot to consider.

Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Abigail Breslin, Asa Butterfield, and Hailee Steinfeld in Ender's Game (2013)

As those who'd screened the trailer at CinemaCon warned, he's got quite a face tattoo indeed! Kingsley spoke to EW about his character, a general and war hero who saved planet Earth from the Formic bugger ships long before Ender Wiggin was even a twinkle in his father's eye. New Images from Ender’S Game Production Blog Include First Look at Ender’s Monitor
Inventions dreamed up in science fiction novels have preempted the availability of practical technology numerous times (ie submarines, military drones, the internet); Ender's Game is no exception.  Author Orson Scott Card wrote about multimedia tablets, the power held by the written word on the internet and electronic monitoring devices in his 1985 novel.  These things are, more or less, commonplace today.  So it's fitting that these new images from the Ender's Game film production show this technology not as obtrusive, but as practical.  One of the understated but necessary devices is "the monitor," an implant that connects Andrew "Ender" Wiggin to his overseers.  We've got a first look at that piece of technology, as well as more images from the production for you to check out.  Ender's Game, starring Asa Butterfield, Abigail Breslin, Harrison Ford and Sir Ben Kingsley and directed by Gavin Hood, opens November 1st, 2013.  Hit the jump to check out the new images.

Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Abigail Breslin, Asa Butterfield, and Hailee Steinfeld in Ender's Game (2013)
Ender's Game Moves to November 2013
Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Abigail Breslin, Asa Butterfield, and Hailee Steinfeld in Ender's Game (2013)
Ender's Game, which is currently in production, has shifted its original release date of March 15th, 2013 to later in the year, on November 1st, 2013.

Gavin Hood directs this adaptation of Orson Scott Card's young adult novel, which follows a gifted young man's military training 70 years after aliens have invaded earth. Producer Roberto Orci has updated his blog with the following photo and statement from space camp.

" "Houston, we have a problem. We don't know how to land the Shuttle." Good thing it's just a simulator safely on the ground at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. Aramis Knight, Moises Arias, Asa Butterfield & Suraj Partha (pictured above from a monitor in the Mission Control Room ) and the rest of our cast agreed that to do Ender's Game right, they had to train as though they were really headed into Zero G. And this wasn't just an afternoon spent taking a vanity tour.
