Canada’s creepiest little production studio, Black Fawn Films, have been on a real roll lately. Earlier this year their supernatural Horror from writer/director Chad Archibald It Feeds (a great indie scare fest for fans of Lights Out and Insidious, starring Twilight‘s Ashley Greene) hit theatres after scaring the pants off of everyone at Panic Fest. And now, the hometown team returns to Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival with The Undertone, a slow burn that really delivers the goods and crafts some of the year’s scariest sequences with nothing more than a microphone and your imagination’s ability to totally f*ck you up.
Written and directed by Ian Tuason, in his directorial debut, The Undertone follows Evy (Nina Kiri), a young woman completely isolated from the outside world while caring for her dying mother. Evy‘s only real escape from the day-to-day gloom is her...

The Undertone Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
A comfortable family home becomes a site of terror when a podcast co-host listens to what might be demonically attenuated audio files in Ian Tuason’s The Undertone. The film, which makes highly effective use of old horror tricks, premièred at Fantasia on Monday 28 July, and the following day I discussed it with Ian and his star Nina Kiri.
“It started when I was writing a scripted narrative podcast,” Ian says, “so that's what The Undertone was initially. It was two podcasters doing their regular weekly podcast episodes, talking about creepypastas. And then my parents got sick, and I was a caregiver to both of them.
“You know, all my life, I've been wondering why The Exorcist was so scary. That's the scariest movie that I've ever seen, and it traumatised me as a kid. I'm Catholic, so it really messed me up.

Every now and again, as technology advances and offers improved options in sound and vision, horror benefits from going back to the basics. The Undertone, which screened as part of Fantasia 2025, is a simple story with a single location and a small cast, but it’s satisfying to watch because the team behind it really understand their craft. Furthermore, if you’re somebody who enjoys the lingering thrill of struggling to get to sleep after a scary movie, nothing really beats watching one set in a domestic space.
The house in question – actually director Ian Tuason’s own, but much transformed – is home to Evangeline, known as Evy (played by The Handmaid’s Tale star Nina Kiri) and her mother (Michèle Duquet). The latter is bedbound and seems to be permanently sunk into a light coma. Evy takes good care of her, but as time goes on, it’s difficult to tell.

Sound is everything in The Undertone. It’s a film about a horror podcaster, so it makes sense that the sound design plays an important role. It’s more than that, though; more so than any other recent horror film, The Undertone lives and dies on how sound and silence is used.
And it is used incredibly well.
The film follows Evy Babic (Nina Kiri), a horror podcaster who has moved home to care for her dying mother (Michèle Duquet). Mama is very near death: she hasn’t eaten or drunk anything for several days and a nurse clarifies to Evy to keep an ear out for the “death rattle” that will signal her mother’s impending death.
In between changing soiled sheets and talking to her mother, Evy hops on mic to chat with Justin, her co-host on All Things Creepy. Justin is the believer and Evy is the skeptic,...

While the oeuvre of Toronto director David Cronenberg, the maestro of body horror, has inspired generations of Canadian filmmakers (including his progeny) and continues to do, Montreal’s Fantasia Festival and its Frontières Market event put them face-to-face with the global genre community – not to mention rabid local audiences – in a red-carpet-free cinema hotzone.
10 years in the making, Félix Dufour-Laperrière’s “Death Does Not Exist” (“La mort n’existe pas”), his third animated film and the only Canadian feature to world-premiere at Cannes this year, receives its North American and local premiere July 17.
Dufour-Laperrière has made all his animated films with the same small team out of the Montreal studio he runs with his brother Nicolas. “We’re coming from the Quebec film scene, which has a strong relationship with documentary, animation, alternative fiction, alternative means of production,” he told Variety.

There were always certain characters from The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood that we knew would need to come to life on the screen. They were characters mentioned throughout Offred’s story in the novel, but they never got a voice of their own. Alexis Bledel took on the role of one of them, taking on the role of Ofglen, who we would learn was actually called Emily.
From the beginning of the series, Emily’s story was harrowing. She was made a Handmaid after trying to flee America for Canada, where her wife and son were citizens of. Since she held an American passport, she was stopped at the border, and so started her harrowing ordeal that would lead to mutilation, a time in the toxic colonies, and much more.

There were many callbacks to earlier episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale in the series finale. While the locations are somewhat easy to get, it’s not always that easy to get former cast members. Well, the series did it, and was able to keep these cameos a complete surprise — even from those of us who saw some of the filming!
Caution: This post contains Spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale series finale.
The final episode quickly picked up with the fall of Gilead in Boston. The Guardians had to pull back, meaning that the state of Massachssets was free from Gilead control and back under American law. This allowed one character who hasn’t been seen since the end of the fourth season make a return.

[This story contains specific spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale series finale, titled “The Handmaid’s Tale.”]
While looking into a window marked with the words, “Freedom,” June (Elisabeth Moss) and viewers of The Handmaid’s Tale heard a familiar voice.
“Blessed be the fruit.”
The voice belonged to Alexis Bledel, who returned as Emily in the series finale of the Hulu series, which began streaming Tuesday.
Her arrival was as much of a surprise to June (Elisabeth Moss) as it is to the audience who hasn’t seen the Og handmaid since Bledel left the series after season four. Bledel, an original star who earned four nominations for her role on the Hulu dystopian series, departed without a specific explanation.
While the fifth season was in production, Bledel had said, “After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time. I am forever grateful to [showrunner] Bruce Miller for writing such...

“Our company has always put filmmakers first and we’re excited to apply the Black Fawn blueprint to the sales market. A healthy ecosystem for filmmakers benefits the entire industry, and we’re committed to nourishing that ecosystem as much as we can.”...

“Filmmaking is a highly collaborative process, and we believe that should be extended to the sales and distribution side of the business as well,” said Black Fawn Distribution’s Operations Manager Cf Benner.
“Our company has always put filmmakers first and we’re excited to apply the Black Fawn blueprint to the sales market. A healthy ecosystem for filmmakers benefits the entire industry, and we’re committed to nourishing that ecosystem as much as we can.”...

Some people say love is a battlefield, but what if there was a scientific solution to determining your compatibility with your chosen partner? Would the results confirm your evolution from lust to emotional adoration? Could you discover if the person you’re with is better suited for someone else? Some people would prefer to remain in blissful ignorance, but in Apple TV+‘s Fingernails trailer, love gets tested, and the results could destroy even the strongest of bonds.
Christos Nikou directs Fingernails from a script he co-wrote with Stavros Raptis and Sam Steiner. The story focuses on Anna (Jessie Buckley) and Ryan (Jeremy Allen White), a couple who believe they’ve found true love, and a controversial new technology proves it. There’s just one problem. Anna is curious to know if the results are accurate. So, she takes a position at a love testing institute, where she meets Amir (Riz Ahmed), and sparks fly.

Nina Kiri, known for her role as Alma on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” has joined the cast of dystopian sci-fi adventure “Absolution.”
The title will be brought onto the market at Cannes’ Marché du Film Frontières platform, featuring in its Proof of Concept strand.
The Serbian-Canadian actor is no stranger to genre, having appeared in “The Heretics,” “The Haunted House on Kirby Road” or “Let Her Out.” Soon, she will also be spotted in Christos Nikou’s “Fingernails” alongside Jessie Buckley.
Directed by Filip Kovacevic, “Absolution” – a co-production between Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro – takes place in a barren wasteland, far removed from the mythical city of gods, with only one human settlement left.
Under the leadership of a zealous priest, who started conducting human sacrifice rituals after experiencing a religious vision, people are dying out. But things start to change when his younger brother finds a mysterious young woman, buried in a strange capsule.

Swiss auteur Simon Jaquemet’s “Electric Child” joins Ukrainian sci-fi comedy “U Are the Universe,” and “We Are Zombies,” from heavily rated Canadian trio Rkss, as three potential highlights at this year’s Cannes Marché du Film’s Frontières Platform, organized with the Fantasia Film Festival.
Focusing on genre, the Frontières showcase is emerging as one of the Marché du Film’s biggest market plays, supercharged by this year’s milestone Oscar triumph of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” smart genre’s popularity among an emerging generation of filmmakers and its rising tide as one of the most resilient of independent movie market propositions.
For Rkss, it’s a return, having had great success with their previous “Turbo Kid,” which went on to Sundance, and won a bunch including at SXSW and Fright Fest.

Outside of production design, which it was on four times, “The Handmaid’s Tale” has ruled one other Emmy category: Best Drama Guest Actress. A three-time champ there, it could add a fourth award this year to put it one shy of the most wins in the category.
The Hulu drama won guest actress three years in a row from 2017-19 for Alexis Bledel, Samira Wiley and Cherry Jones. It’s currently tied at three victories with “The Practice,” which won for Beah Richards (2000), Alfre Woodard (2003) and Sharon Stone (2004). Only “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” has won more — the long-running procedural, which may never end at this point, holds the record with five wins, including four in a row: Amanda Plummer (2005), Leslie Caron (2007), Cynthia Nixon (2008), Ellen Burstyn (2009) and Ann-Margret (2010). Perhaps what’s even more remarkable about “Svu’s” run is that the voters decided they were completely done with the...
