While pulling from true stories can make for excellent fiction films, there's a certain way of telling them that tends to leave critics gritting their teeth, its conventions associated with the too-broad term 'biopic'. These movies are easily accessible, perhaps, but frustratingly inert, and they often live or die by their narrative's inherent intrigue and the strength of the lead performance. The Lost King is exactly this, though of those two pillars, it relies too much on the latter to compensate for the former. It comes across as if the filmmakers were concerned with the story's potential slightness, only to have their steps to mitigate this exacerbating that very quality. The problem is one of focus, and had the movie trusted its protagonist enough to let her be the true center, it might have provided a viewing experience worth recommending.

Writer-producer Alison Cross has been named by the Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) as the recipient of this year’s Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement.

Cross, best known for writing fact-based TV movies Serving In Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story and Roe vs. Wade, will receive the award at the Writers Guild Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills on February 11.

Rooster Teeth's heroes have suited up once again and are ready to do battle with extraterrestrial foes. The Austin-based studio has released Lazer Team 2, a feature film that serves as a sequel to 2016's Lazer Team.

In the original Lazer Team, four friends -- portrayed by Michael Jones, Gavin Free, Burnie Burns, and Colton Dunn -- came upon a powerful suit of armor, which granted them special abilities. In the second film, all four of the lead actors reprise their roles as the titular team heads out on an adventure to save one of their own. A sequel to 2015 sci-fi action comedy sequel film the film stars Colton Dunn, Burnie Burns, Gavin Free, and Michael Jones (from the first film) alongside newcomers Nichole Bloom and Victoria Pratt. Matt Hullum is back in the directors chair, along with Daniel Fabelo.

After Woody (Gavin Free) goes missing working on secret, alien research, scientist Maggie Wittington (Nichole Bloom) must recruit the former members of Lazer Team (Burnie Burns, Colton Dunn, Michael Jones) to join her in rescuing their lost friend. It’s up to Maggie to bring the Lazer Team back together and rescue Woody.

Lazer Team 2 will receive a limited theatrical release in the Us on November 13th, before premiering on YouTube Red on November 22nd. You can read our review of the first film right here.

The sequel to Lazer Team -- a sci-fi action comedy produced by Fullscreen Films and Rooster Teeth -- is set to arrive on YouTube Red Nov. 22, the video giant announced today, though a limited theatrical release courtesy of Gunpowder & Sky is planned ahead of the film’s digital debut.

In Lazer Team 2, one of the members of the alien-fighting squad -- as played by The Slow Mo Guys' Gavin Free -- goes missing while working on secret research, and the three other members of the Lazer Team (played by Colton Dunn and Rooster Teeth's Burnie Burns and Michael Jones) must re-team to rescue their friend. The film was written by Burns and Daniel Fabelo, and was co-directed by Fabelo and Matt Hullum. New cast members for the sequel include Nichole Bloom (Superstore) and Victoria Pratt (Heartland).

A second sci-fi adventure from the team at Rooster Teeth is well on its way. The digital content studio has announced that Nichole Bloom and Victoria Pratt have joined the cast of Lazer Team 2, which will be released through YouTube Red.

Bloom (Superstore) and Pratt (Heartland) will portray new characters who will complement the four leads of the first Lazer Team film: Burnie Burns, Michael Jones, Gavin Free, and Colton Dunn. This will be the second time Dunn and Bloom have worked together, as Dunn is also one of Superstore’s principal cast members.

“Nichole is an incredible addition to the cast of Lazer Team,” said Lazer Team co-director Daniel Fabelo. “We’re excited to put her comedic prowess and talent to work in this new adventure as we send these other four idiots into space.”

Four heroes with super-powered suits of space armor are headed out to save the world...again. During a Television Critics Association (TCA) presentation, YouTube announced its plan to distribute a sequel to the Rooster Teeth feature film Lazer Team on its YouTube Red subscription service.

The original Lazer Team was Rooster Teeth’s first-ever feature-length film. After spending more than a decade building one of the Internet’s most dedicated fan communities, the Austin-based studio funded Lazer Team by raising more than $2.4 million on Indiegogo. A year later, the film was announced as one of the launch titles for YouTube Red, which costs $9.99 per month and offers access to premium content as one of its biggest selling points. Ultimately, the film arrived for Red subscribers in February of this year.

The first Lazer Team film followed its four leads, played by Burnie Burns, Michael Jones, Gavin Free, and Colton Dunn.

“Lazer Team” fans can rejoice because a sequel is on the way. YouTube announced Friday morning, during its first Television Critics Association summer press tour, that the sci-fi comedy has been given the greenlight for a second part.

The record-setting film hails from Fullscreen Films and Rooster Teeth which launched an Indiegogo campaign to fund the project. After raising $2.4 million, it was released in theaters on January 27, 2016, and on YouTube Red a month later.

“Lazer Team,” directed by Matt Hullum and starring Burnie Burns, Gavin Free, Michael Jones and Colton Dunn, follows four small-town misfits, who after stumbling across an alien crash site, must use an extraterrestrial battle suit to save mankind.

Lazer Team is the story of a dimwitted group of ne’er-do-wells that stumble into the position of defenders of humanity — imagine the burnouts from Pineapple Express or the nerds from Superbad inheriting superpowers and you’re on the right track. The brainchild of the Rooster Teeth crew, Lazer Team features all the raunchy humor and cinematic hi-jinks that has endeared the brand to its wildly devoted fans over the past decade.

In Lazer Team, the American military intercepts an extra-terrestrial signal that warns them of an impending alien threat. So that humanity may stand a fighting chance, a benign alien race sends a ship carrying a suit of power to earth which provides the strength needed to defeat the invaders.

I’m going to dub Rooster Teeth’s Lazer Team the Anti-Pixels. Their plots are so eerily similar, but I guess that can be said about most of these “unlikely hero” arcs in science fiction. A group of friends stumble upon alien weaponry, training montages ensue, there’s an inner struggle that keeps the team at odds, an alien challenger comes to Earth for a universal pink-slip competition, and the team finally comes together in a moment of emotional triumph. The only difference? Lazer Team doesn’t totally suck like Pixels. In fact, it’s rather funny – but what else would you expect from Rooster Teeth? You’ve been watching these guys make a mockery of Halo for years, now watch them take aim at the sci-fi genre like only their brash immaturity could imagine.

So who is the Lazer Team? Just your run-of-the-mill chuckleheads who have no business saving the world.

It is time for me to make my peace with the fact that I will not be at Fantastic Fest this year. Last year's fest was one of my favorites ever, fitting for a tenth anniversary, and I would love to go this year. It's just not in the cards, though. It guts me, too. The event continues to grow and change and evolve, and it features one of the greatest programming teams in the business right now.
