Netflix Upgrading Shonda Rhimes' New Mystery Series For Emmy Consideration With Season 2 Already In Talks

Netflix is upgrading The Residence for Emmy consideration, with discussions for a second season already underway. The murder mystery series, produced byShondaland (Bridgerton), follows Uzo Aduba's eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp as she investigates a high-profile murder within the White House. Randall Park joins the castas Cupp's FBI sidekick, alongside Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, Jason Lee, and Ken Marino. With the deadline for Emmy entries closing in, Netflix is positioning The Residence as a contender in the award ceremony's comedy race.

In an interview with Deadline, creator Paul William Davies, alongside series leads Uzo Aduba and Randall Park, shared their thoughts about a potential sophomore run. Inspired by Kate Andersen Brower's book of the same name, Davies' screwball whodunit is set to compete with similar genre-bending titles like returning nominees Poker Face and Hulu's Only Murders in the Building. This means that the series may not be designated as a miniseries.
