Overlooked 2020s Romance Movie Becomes Netflix Hit 3 Years After Release
Image
All My Life, a romance movie directed by Marc Meyers, has become a hit on Netflix three years after its theatrical release. It's currently holding the number 7 spot on the streamer's top 10 list. The movie is based on a true story, chronicling one couple's journey to put on their wedding after the groom is diagnosed with liver cancer. The film, which was distributed by Universal Pictures, was released in December 2020, receiving mixed reviews from critics and earning only $2 million at the box office.

All My Life, Universal Pictures' overlooked romance movie, has now become a hit on Netflix almost three years after its release. Directed by Marc Meyers, the film chronicles the true story of Solomon Chau and Jennifer Carter, a young couple who accelerates their wedding plans after Solomon is diagnosed with liver cancer. ‘All My Life’: A Cliché Romance With Touches Of Personality [Review]
Image
Loosely based on the real lives of Solomon Chau and Jennifer Carter, “All My Life” is burdened with a near-impossible challenge of balancing how to honor the subjects the film is based on while also avoiding trite emotional manipulation that often mars this particular romantic subgenre. The film only marginally succeeds. Drawing both from the true story being told – we witness footage from their wedding over the end credits – as well as every other tear-inducing romance where the pair in question is faced with unexpected sickness and loss, the film is a mess of cliches but sprinkled with touches of personality.

All My Life Review: Forced Romantic Drama Leaves No Cliché Untapped
Inspired by real-life couple Jennifer Carter and Solomon “Sol” Chau, All My Life is the sanitized, sanded-down version of what probably would have been a very interesting documentary that wouldn’t require the sugary artificiality of a script that feels like it was written by a mall focus group recruited exclusively from customers of Williams Sonoma and Pink by Victoria’s Secret. In this narrative version, Carter (Jessica Rothe) and Chau (Harry Shum Jr.) are imagined as twenty-somethings living their lives in search of “something more” as Jennifer’s voiceover tells us upfront.

Jennifer is a student who never seems to have any professional interests; Sol works first in marketing but has a true passion for food. While out a sports bar with friends, Jennifer and Solomon bond over a margarita and decide to meet up for a run and a trip to the farmers market the next day, where they...

Harry Shum Jr. and Jessica Rothe in All My Life (2020)
‘All My Life’ Film Review: Romantic Drama Tries to Turn Heartbreaking Into Heartwarming
Harry Shum Jr. and Jessica Rothe in All My Life (2020)
At first, “All My Life” looks like a typical romantic comedy: Girl and boy meet cute, banter playfully, flirt, go on a fun first date and fall in love during montages set to pop songs.

But if you know anything about the Marc Meyers movie starring Jessica Rothe and Harry Shum Jr., you know going in that this is not a rom-com. It’s based on a true story, and all the promo materials spell out that this is a movie about a couple dealing with a serious illness. It’s a drama rather than a comedy, so call it a rom-dram – and if that phrase seems slightly dismissive, it’s appropriate for a movie that plays up the sentimentality and never escapes the feeling that it’s a light look at a heavy subject.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and “All My Life” is nothing if not...
