Exclusive: Al Calderon has been busy at work shooting new episodes of Days of Our Lives as the character Javi Hernandez, which will air in May of next year. However, on the heels of his series regular casting in Season 2 of NBC’s Brilliant Minds, the role of Javi will be recast, sources tell Deadline.
“We do not comment on the contract status of our actors, but fans should not worry, Javi is alive and well in Salem,” representatives for Days of Our Lives shared in a statement.
Calderon joined the long-running NBC/Peacock sudser last February as Javi, a passionate and professional man who is larger than life at times, then sensitive at others. He’s the man you’d want to date or befriend, but not one you should aim to have as an enemy.

What’s next for NBC’s new breakout medical drama?
It feels like every network has a medical drama. However, Brilliant Minds is unique in that the life and career of author and neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks inspired it.
The NBC series follows Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) and his talented interns as they delve into the human mind, their own mental health, and the complexities of their relationships.

It was one of the few series that focused on neurology and psychology, detailing how these cases affected the team.
We were relieved when Brilliant Minds was finally renewed, as we had grown invested in these characters, and the series ended on multiple cliffhangers.
Many fans are still reeling from that intense finale, and it’s time to contemplate what’s next. Who’s returning, and who’s new, and how will they mess with the established dynamics? Which...

Brilliant Minds has a near-perfect argument for why it should be renewed for season 2. The freshman medical drama stands out because of its focus on neurological cases and its commitment to diversity. Unlike most medical shows, the series is set in an overcrowded hospital in a poor area and features several neurodivergent characters as well as characters of different races and sexual orientations. The first season of Brilliant Minds only had 13 episodes and ended on January 6, 2025, with a two-hour finale.
Although NBC has not made a decision yet about Brilliant Minds season 2, the season finale ended with several cliffhangers, most notably when Wolf (Zachary Quinto) blew off his date with Nichols (Teddy Sears) to see his long-absent father, Noah (Mandy Patinkin) at a diner, where Noah told him he had a mysterious illness he wanted Wolf to look into. It would be disappointing if Brilliant Minds is canceled without resolving this intriguing new storyline.

Medical dramas are a dime a dozen, but Brilliant Minds explored thought-provoking cases that affected the mind.
These cases were intriguing, and many affected the doctors personally, too. The series excelled at balancing medical and personal cases so audiences would grow invested in the characters.
While we think the series ended too soon, it ended on a cliffhanger, so we’re hopeful it’ll get renewed for a second season. Let’s rank and review its most memorable and least satisfying moments.

The NBC medical drama Brilliant Minds has worked to break the genre mold, and that's included its development of the interns who make up Dr. Oliver Wolf's team. The four characters have each found directions and revealed quirks over the first season. And the actors who play them have also been able to show off different aspects of their talent to the audience.
In an interview with Cbr, stars Alex MacNicoll (who portrays Dr. Van Markus) and Spence Moore II (who plays Dr. Jacob Nash) reflected on the journeys their characters have taken. Were they in the know on some of the big reveals, like Van's "superpower" diagnosis, or were they just as surprised as the fans? And why do they believe Brilliant Minds is not only a standout medical drama, but a different kind of TV show?

Following Brilliant Minds episode 13, the NBC TV show's first season has come to an end, meaning there won't be any more new episodes (for now). The medical drama series, created by Michael Grassi, is partly based on two of neurologist Oliver Sacks' nonfiction books — The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and An Anthropologist on Mars. Both novels chronicle real-life medical cases, which inspired Grassi to create Brilliant Minds.
Brilliant Minds stars Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf, an attending neurologist at Bronx General in New York. Dr. Wolf is quite gifted, eccentric, and defined by his unique approach to his work (which isn't too popular among some of his peers). The series begins with Quinto's character accepting a new job at Bronx General, where he leads a team of interns and takes on unusual and challenging psychological cases. Unfortunately, though, Brilliant Minds season 1 is limited to 13 episodes.

If there is one show that we need more of, it’s Brilliant Minds. The first season has come to an end, and now all eyes are on whether Brilliant Minds season 2 will happen.
NBC hasn’t canceled or renewed the series just yet. In a way, this is a good thing. No news is good news at this point in the TV schedule—a renewal would just be better. It gives us hope that there will be more to come, and it’s clear that there are more stories to tell.
So, what are the chances that NBC will decide to renew this series? This is one show that’s definitely on the bubble.
Brilliant Minds season 2 has a 50/50 chance at this point
This is one of those shows that is unfairly on the bubble, and part of that does come down to the pilot episode. I’m not going to lie.

Oliver isn’t enthusiastic about a formal event but accepts since Josh is receiving an award.
Josh admits he’s falling for Oliver. Oliver smiles but doesn’t reply.
Oliver’s dad, Noah (Mandy Patinkin), is still hanging out at Muriel’s place and insists he’s taking his meds and “in a good place.” Muriel (Donna Murphy) wonders what they’ll tell Oliver, concerned this news will disrupt his happiness. NBC’s Brilliant Minds season one winter finale left off with a cliffhanger showing Ericka’s apartment building collapsing. Episode 12 plunges into the aftermath of the collapse, with first responders looking for survivors amid the rubble.
200 people, including Ericka, live in the apartment complex that has partially collapsed.
Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) warns the interns that a flood of traumatized survivors is coming their way. And although it’s against his normal teachings, they need to detach themselves from what’s happening and treat the injured.
The emergency room is quickly jam-packed with patients-some with minor injuries, some critical, and all needing assessment.

The Brilliant Minds season 1 midseason finale did not disappoint. It brought us unique medical conditions and plenty of drama.
Caution: This post contains Spoilers for Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 11
The episode itself was nicely split across three storylines. We got to see the interns at work as they decided to race each other to discharging their patients, and we got to see Wolf and Nichols figure out how to deal with their relationship when their medical opinions differ. Most importantly, we got some closure for Pierce’s storyline.

The medical cases and relationships on Brilliant Minds tied up loose ends as the first season comes closer to its end.
Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 11 seemed to tie up Carol’s connection to Alison and her marital issues with Morris. Dr. Wolf and Dr. Nichols disagreed about whether an old patient of Wolf’s should have brain surgery to remove his Tourette’s tics.
Also, Van and Jacob’s competition over Ericka intensified, and she hated feeling like a pawn in a chess game.
(Rafy/ NBC) Alison’s Need for Attention Almost Cost Carol Her Career
Affair stories on TV shows are a dime a dozen. However, Brilliant Minds expanded this one so that Alison and Carol both wanted to know about “the other woman.”
While Carol was typically fierce, she crumbled when Alison overdosed and worried her decisions drove Alison to the edge.

During the previous episode, Pierce warned Wolf about dating someone he worked with. It looks like that will come up in Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 11, as Wolf and Nichols disagree with how to deal with a patient.
While the episode is titled “The Other Woman,” much of the promotional material focuses on Wolf and Nichols. They work with a patient who wants to go a specific route, but the two disagree on the right method of treatment. Could this have a knock-on effect on their relationship? Things are still early days for the two of them.

A doctor’s painful past and uncertain future bookend one of the freshman hit’s most emotional outings, which offers a deeper dive into Brilliant Minds’ beating heart: the bond between Zachary Quinto’s neurologist, Oliver Wolf, and Tamberla Perry‘s psychiatrist, Carol Pierce. “It’s based on the real-life relationship between Oliver Sacks and a woman named Carol E. Burnett,” says Quinto, whose character is inspired by the famed Sacks. “They were medical students together and colleagues, and they were very, very dear friends. I think both of them—he as a gay man and she as a Black woman [in the 1950s]—really understood what it was to be ‘othered’.” Unlike Oliver, however, Carol is more about figuring out a different kind of cerebral operation. Back in July before the show launched, Perry noted, “Dr. Carol is the chief of psychiatry, so I’m not dealing with brains. I’m not pulling out any scalpels,...

NBC's Brilliant Minds premiered on September 23 with new episodes airing weekly on Mondays. The show is inspired by real-life physician, Oliver Sacks, and sees Zachary Quinto play a neurologist who has a condition called prosopagnosia, also known as facial blindness. After being fired from his previous job, Oliver Wolf takes his long-time friend up on her offer to work at Bronx General Hospital.
Carol entrusts Dr. Wolf with a group of young interns, who are caught off guard by his unconventional approach to care. However, despite Oliver's initial resistance to being a teacher, Quinto feels that everyone has adapted to the new dynamic. The star explains that their different perspectives allow him to approach cases from all angles, which benefits the patient in the long run. What happens when you lose the one thing you’re passionate about? That’s something that we take a look at in Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 9.
Caution: this post contains Spoilers from Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 9.
Titled “The Colorblind Painter,” we knew immediately what the case was going to involve this episode. Wolf and his interns had a patient who had lost the ability to see color. This wasn’t just any patient. Gabriel is an amazing artist, and without being able to see color, he can’t paint. Yet, he has an art exhibition coming up.
Wolf is intrigued. Why can Gabriel no longer see color? He had an accident a few months ago, and that was the time he lost the ability to see color. So, Wolf knows that it has something to do with that.

NBC’s Brilliant Minds episode nine opens with Ericka (Ashleigh Lathrop) and Van (Alex MacNicoll) in bed, totally happy but also certain they can’t tell any of their colleagues about their relationship. They want to keep things uncomplicated as long as possible.
While this is going on Dr. Oliver Wolf’s voiceover is all about emotions and how they affect the way we see colors. Colors can also cause emotions.
Oliver (Zachary Quinto) comes into work smiling, and the interns joke among themselves about their boss getting laid. After leaving a quick voicemail for Dr. Josh Nichols (Teddy Sears), Oliver meets with Angelika Delaney about one of her artist clients, Gabriel Ferguson. Recently, he stopped painting and is blaming it on migraines.
Unfortunately, Gabe’s shut her out,...

Donna Murphy, Teddy Sears, and Zachary Quinto in ‘Brilliant Minds’ episode 8 (Photo by: Rafy/NBC)
NBC’s Brilliant Minds episode eight opens with Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) thinking about what motivates us to carry on, even on our worst days. His opinion? It’s all about desire. When we get what we want, our brain gives us dopamine – the neurotransmitter that creates pleasure.
Dr. Ericka Kinney (Ashleigh Lathrop) and Dr. Jacob Nash (Spence Moore II) engage in a little flirting, but what catches Dr. Carol Pierce’s (Tamberla Perry) attention is the look that passes between Oliver and Dr. Josh Nichols (Teddy Sears).
In other news, the tension between Oliver and his mom, Dr. Muriel Landon (Donna Murphy), is so thick you could cut it with a knife.
Episode eight’s titular case involves June Sullivan (Susan Nimoy), an elderly woman whose two adult sons are concerned she may have dementia.

Brilliant Minds has excelled at exploring living life on a patient’s terms when they need to adapt to new circumstances.
In Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 8, Dr. Wolf appealed to June Sullivan’s family to get them to adapt and accept that their mother had changed.
June Sullivan had spunk and energy at 80 years old. It’s a shame it was a side effect of the neurosyphilis. I’d love to be like at that age, too.
(Rafy/ NBC)
She was full of wisdom and counseled both Wolf and Ericka about their love lives. We saw many more flashbacks of an 18-year-old Oliver Wolf and his first crush, which explained his fear of relationships and the cold war with his mom.
Dr. Pierce had a patient who had a mysterious reason for seeing her.
June Sullivan is the Ideal Elderly Role Model

Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf in ‘Brilliant Minds’ episode 7 (Photo by: Rafy/NBC)
NBC’s Brilliant Minds episode seven opens with a flashback of Roman (aka John) in Grozny, Chechnya, running from the authorities. Flash-forward to current events, and Roman’s able to acknowledge he can still hear Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto). Oliver explains they’re about to insert an electrode into his brain to allow him to communicate. It’s a risky surgery, but Roman indicates with his eye movements that he’s ready to move forward.
Oliver and the interns go over Roman’s medical history again, and it’s evident that multiple doctors at a dozen hospitals misdiagnosed his condition. Treating him for seizures instead of the early stages of a stroke meant that by putting him on Propofol he was sedated into oblivion. No one caught that he was actually suffering from locked-in syndrome until now.

Brilliant Minds has quickly become a favorite, partly because of the show’s unique premise and how Dr. Wolf relates to his patients.
The series also appeals to viewers because the interns have grown so much since the series premiere. They have learned to deal with their conditions and lean on each other as friends.
Van, Ericka, Jacob, and Dana have become a family in many ways.
(Brendan Meadows/NBC))
TV Fanatic chatted with Alex MacNicoll (Van), Spence Moore II (Jacob), Ashleigh La Throp (Ericka), and Aury Krebs (Dana) during a recent virtual press day.
They talked about their relationships with each other on and off-screen, their character’s conditions, the infamous love triangle, and their favorite cases on Brilliant Minds so far.
Check out the interview below.
The interns have come a long way since the series began. How do you think the relationships progressed naturally, and are you all friends off-screen?...

It’s time to head back to high school in Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 6. What was going on with the group teen pregnancies?
Caution: This post contains Spoilers for Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 6.
Wolf is quickly pulled into an interesting case. At first, it looks like a teenage who comes to the hospital to avoid telling her parents she’s pregnant. However, Wolf quickly realizes this is something more when there isn’t actually a baby.
It gets even weirder. Other friends in the school are also “pregnant.” Is this a case of mass hysterical pregnancies?

When Carol asks about Oliver’s non-existent dating life, Oliver (Zachary Quinto) immediately starts talking about John Doe.
