One of 2024's best horror novels is getting the film treatment, and seems to be on the fast track to development after recently casting its young lead. Written by Josh Malerman (Bird Box), Incidents Around the House is set to be retitled to Other Mommy when it hits the big screen in 2026 thanks to Universal and Atomic Monster, the same company behind 2021's Mortal Kombat and its upcoming sequel.
Per Deadline, eight-year-old Arabella Olivia Clark (Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere) has snagged the lead in Other Mommy, taking on the role of Bela, the novel's protagonist. Directed by Rob Savage from a screenplay by Nathan Elston, she joins previously announced cast members Jessica Chastain, Jay Duplass and Dichen Lachman.

A few months ago, it was announced that director Rob Savage would be moving on from a Stephen King adaptation to a Josh Malerman adaptation, as The Boogeyman director was set to helm a film adaptation of Bird Box author Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House, with Jessica Chastain (It Chapter Two) signed on to play a lead role. Since then, Jay Duplass (Transparent) and Dichen Lachman (Severance) have joined the cast, and it’s become increasingly obvious that the filmmakers didn’t intend to use the title Incidents Around the House. Now, it’s official: Deadline reports that the film is called Other Mommy. It has also been revealed that eight-year-old Arabella Olivia Clark, who will be seen in the upcoming film Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, has landed a lead role.

Rob Savage’s next horror film will hit cinemas in May 2026. But what’s Other Mommy about? We’re glad you asked…
Featured image: The Boogeyman (2023)
If you were scared senseless by Rob Savage’s Covid-era screamfest Host, you’ve likely been keeping tabs on the British director. Blumhouse also noticed his talents after Host and offered him a three-picture deal, keeping the filmmaker well and truly busy after his transition from indie films to Hollywood.
The first of those films was 2021’s somewhat controversial Dashcam. But 2026 will see the release of the second film Savage has made with Blumhouse. Titled Other Mommy, it sounds like an interesting companion movie to Savage’s 2023 horror, The Boogeyman.
This writer is keen on seeing what else Savage has in store for us, and we’re betting you are, too. With that in mind, here’s what we know so far about Other Mommy.

Blumhouse laid off six staffers across film, television and casting departments amid larger company restructuring, TheWrap has learned.
The independent studio employs around 100 people.
The staffers affected are largely junior-level executives and support staff. Amongst those affected was Haley Pigman, a creative development manager who previously worked on Blumhouse titles like “The Woman in the Yard.”
The studio has been the industry standard for consistent horror success at the box office for years, yielding high concept, low-budget hits every year and spawning multiple franchises in the process.
But for the past 18 months, the studio has suffered its first extended slump, and the sequel that was supposed to get things back on track, “M3GAN 2.0,” instead continued the trend, suffering a poor $10.2 million domestic/$17.1 million global opening weekend. None of the affected staffers worked on the film.

Bird Box was released in 2018, and the Sandra Bullock-led film quickly became a global sensation and Netflix’s latest hit at the time. The post-apocalyptic thriller movie stars Bullock as Malorie, a woman seeking a safe haven for her children to protect them from deadly supernatural entities.
The film received generally positive reviews, and its popularity on streaming made it a natural contender for a sequel. As it turns out, the original novel, which was adapted into the 2018 film, already has a sequel, and it would make the perfect story for Bullock to return as Malorie in Bird Box 2.
Bird Box 2 could bring back Sandra Bullock by adapting the sequel novel
Author Josh Malerman wrote the 2014 novel Bird Box, which was faithfully adapted into the 2018 film of the same name, starring Sandra Bullock in the lead role. The film received positive reviews and became one of Netflix’s most-watched movies.

The search for a director is underway, with Malerman and producing partner Ryan Lewis (Bird Box) set to produce for their Spin a Black Yarn.

Exclusive: Rising screenwriter Jenna Mattison has been tapped to script an adaptation of Decorum at the Deathbed, the 2021 novella from Bird Box‘s Josh Malerman, for the New York Times bestseller’s production house Spin a Black Yarn.
Released exclusively as an Audible Original, Decorum at the Deathbed follows a grieving widow that starts a twisted affair with the detective investigating the mutilated deer that keep appearing in the forest behind her house. But as the relationship deepens he begins to wonder if she’s truly a victim or a sociopathic killer. A disturbing and terrifying tale unearthing the dark shadows of the mind and finding redemption in the most unexpected of places.
Josh Malerman
The story is described as an elevated psychological thriller — Body Heat meets Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart. The search for a director is underway, with Malerman and his producing partner Ryan Lewis set to produce for Spin a Black Yarn.
Mattison is no stranger to bestselling authors, having adapted novels by James Patterson and Sophie Kinsella, as well as being brought on in 2024 to adapt Dying to Be Me, the New York Times bestselling cancer memoir by Anita Moorjani. Currently, she’s serving as writer and executive producer on a TV series in development at Universal based on an international bestseller from Patterson. She’s also in pre-pro on Haunted, another of her films to be shot in Thailand with the Sundance and Independent Spirit Award-nominated Rosemary Rodriguez directing. Previously, Mattison wrote, directed and produced The Sound, a psychological thriller released theatrically by Orion and Samuel Goldwn.
Malerman is best known for his New York Times bestseller Bird Box, the post-apocalyptic horror thriller adapted into Netflix’s 2018 film of the same name. Directed by Susanne Bier and starring Sandra Bullock, the feature take stood for a time as the most popular film in the streamer’s history, currently sitting at #5 on Netflix’s most popular films list. A spin-off sequel, Bird Box: Barcelona, on which Malerman was an EP, premiered on Netflix in 2023.
Just recently, Malerman set up a feature adaptation of his horror novel Incidents Around the House at Universal, with Jessica Chastain to star and Rob Savage directing, as we were first to report. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse will produce in association with Spin a Black Yarn, with pre-production underway.
Mattison is repped by Gersh, manager Geoff Silverman of Evoke Entertainment, and Cohen & Gardner; Malerman by Ryan Lewis of Spin a Black Yarn, Kristin Nelson of Nelson Literary Agency, and Wayne Alexander of Alexander Lawrence Frumes & Labowitz.

After starring in films of various genres, Academy Award-winning actress Jessica Chastain has finally found her way back to horror with Incidents Around the House, a new project from Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, who are teaming up with Spin a Black Yarn to make it. Universal Pictures is signed on as distributor. Below, we shared all that's been revealed so far about this upcoming film.
Can you believe it? Chastain is diving back into horror! The last time we saw her take on a horror role was in the 2019 supernatural horror flick It Chapter Two, where she played the grown-up Beverly Marsh. But before that, you might remember her from the other supernatural horror Mama, where she starred as a reluctant guardian to two haunted children. Well, it looks like supernatural horror movies are her thing because her upcoming project Incidents Around the House looks to be of the same genre.

Sandra Bullock’s Bird Box created history upon release when it became Netflix’s most popular movie at the time. It broke several viewership records within a few days of its release and also had a pop cultural impact as many tried the ‘Bird Box Challenge’. The challenge even prompted Netflix to urge fans not to do dangerous things while blindfolded.
Despite its popularity, many fans have complained about the ending and the lack of explanation about the entities. The alien entities are revealed to influence people to kill themselves and the only way to protect oneself is to not see them. The treatment of the people who have seen the entities and survived is extremely problematic.

Released in 2018, John Krasinski's A Quiet Place went on to become a box office sensation that took in more than $340 million dollars. He'd follow it up in 2020 with A Quiet Place Part II, and though he took a backseat for last year's A Quiet Place: Day One, the film was just as successful, proving the franchise still has a lot of life left in it no matter who sits in the director's chair. Now, creators Scott Beck and Bryan Woods are teasing where the series could go next, and it makes perfect sense.
Beck and Woods were on hand at the Independent Spirit Awards this past weekend to speak to Collider about their hit horror franchise, which has thus far stuck pretty close to home. The first film saw the Abbott family handle things from their isolated farm in upstate New York, and while Part II expanded things a little,...

Deadline reports that Oscar, Golden Globe, and Emmy-winning director Susanne Bier has been tapped to direct the sequel to the beloved 1998 witchy rom-com Practical Magic. While the deal with Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, isn't quite sealed yet, it is a promising update on the highly anticipated reunion of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
This will be a reteaming for both stars as Bullock worked with Bier on Netflix's Bird Box, an adaptation of the horror novel of the same name by Josh Malerman, and Kidman worked with the director on two previous projects, the HBO series The Undoing and the Netflix miniseries The Perfect Couple. Bier won an Academy Award for best international feature for her 2010 film In a Better World. John Krasinski made a major splash in 2018 with his debut horror feature, A Quiet Place. Along with co-writing and directing, Krasinski also starred in the film opposite Academy Award nominee Emily Blunt (his real-life wife). The thrilling film takes place in the near future, after Earth has been overtaken by violent aliens that hunt by sound. The audience is put in the shoes of a family who struggles to survive in a world in which making noise could result in certain death.
A Quiet Place was not only a hit in the horror community, but actually gained a massive audience around the world, as it ended up appealing to many people who wouldn't typically enjoy horror. Part of this is due to the way the film relies more heavily on suspense, as opposed to things like gore and excessive jump scares. The inclusion of a clever, captivating plot and several...

While the upcoming anthology based on Stephen King's The Stand is exciting enough in its own right, it features a reunion that makes it all the better. The anthology, titled The End of the World As We Know It, will be a first for Stephen King. In it, a collection of notable horror writers will come together to pen stories not just inspired by, but set in the world of The Stand. The authors included in the Stephen King-inspired anthology have inspired great confidence that it will be excellent, if an interesting and slightly risky experiment.
On top of that, with Stephen King teasing a return to Mid-world and the Territories, it's made fans wonder if the new anthology will become canon. It could, perhaps, even more firmly tie together the worlds of The Stand, The Dark Tower, and The Talisman. Either way, it's an exciting thing to see...

Sometimes books are mega hits and get turned into movies that take off. There’s just something that captures the zeitgeist and it’s destined to be. Harry Potter came out of nowhere and then turned into a franchise of books, video games, Lego sets, and of course movies. Other times, authors release something that will undoubtedly get picked up as the track record for success is already there. This is the Stephen King special or even Michael Crichton when he was still active. Adaptations can come from cases of re-adaptations like Dracula, Frankenstein, and other classics that get recycled over and over again, especially of they fall into the public domain. There’s the rare case, though, that an unknown author has a manuscript pop and movie studios jump at the chance to create something new. The journey and strange tale of the author of Bird Box falls under that last category.

Legendary author Stephen King destroyed the world in his 1978 novel The Stand (which got an expanded edition in 1990), unleashing a virus that wiped out most of the population… but once society had crumbled, there was hope that the survivors would find a way to carry on. After, of course, a confrontation between good and supernatural evil decided which path would be taken. Although the entire world is affected by the pandemic, King keeps his focus on American characters because he envisioned The Stand as being an American Lord of the Rings. But if other authors had the chance to write something that takes place in the world of The Stand, they could tell the stories of what happened in other locations around the globe, as well as dig into characters that didn’t get the spotlight in King’s novel. We’ll get to find out exactly what at least...

Ah, October. The magical time of year when even the most horror-averse moviegoers pop open their watchlist in search of some new scary thing to watch. And while "Terrifier 3" will certainly be the highest-grossing horror film of October, the early contender for October's best new scary movie is "V/H/S/Beyond," the latest entry in the "V/H/S" series. With the introduction of a cohesive central theme — and a handful of emerging horror directors giving each segment their all — "V/H/S/Beyond" has restored the franchise to its former glory and reminded us why horror anthologies can be such a fun way to tell a story.
But if "V/H/S/Beyond" represents a resurgence for the cinematic horror anthology, it's not the only one. This has been a banner year for horror anthologies across all mediums, with new collections and series dominating the shelves of your local comic and book stores. In fact, let's make a...

The spooky books readers choose will depend on their preferences, but 2024 really does have something for every type of horror reader. There are lighter stories that boast thrilling scares, and there are more graphic and extreme narratives for seasoned horror lovers. After fighting cancer for years, the author’s body began shutting down — overwhelmed by the malignant cells spreading throughout her system. Halle Berry's new horror film resembles Bird Box in setting and narrative. Never Let Go introduces a unique theme of perception, leaving viewers questioning the existence of monsters outside the main characters' home. The upcoming film also seems similar to It Comes At Night, suggesting a deeper exploration of psychological tension in a post-apocalyptic world.
A new Halle Berry horror film could be the perfect Bird Box replacement 6 years after the Sandra Bullock movie's release on Netflix. Based on Josh Malerman's novel of the same name, Bird Box was not exactly a hit among critics when it first premiered on Netflix and still holds an average Rotten Tomatoes score of 65%. However, despite receiving a mixed reception from viewers and critics, the movie became the most-watched film on Netflix within the first four weeks of its release.

Last year, author Grady Hendrix contributed the 29 page short story Ankle Snatcher (you can read it Here) to the Amazon Original Stories Creature Feature collection, which also featured stories by Joe Hill, Josh Malerman, Paul Tremblay, Jason Mott, and Chandler Baker. Now, Deadline reports that Sony has acquired the rights to make a feature film adaptation of Ankle Snatcher.
Hendrix’s story follows Marcus, who grew up believing his father killed his mother — then blamed it on the boogeyman under the bed. Always leave the lights on, his father warned, or the boogeyman will get you. Marcus still heeds the superstition, especially when he invites his new girlfriend over. Is Marcus haunted by a creature or has he just inherited his father’s murderous delusions? The night will tell.
Hendrix will be producing the film alongside Escape Artist’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Tony Shaw, and Aperture Entertainment’s Adam Goldworm.
