THR reports that Neill Blomkamp will write and direct a new Starship Troopers movie for Columbia Pictures. The report states that this won’t be a remake of Paul Verhoeven’s sci-fi classic, but will follow the original novel by Robert A. Heinlein, which was published in 1959.

The novel follows Juan “Johnny” Rico as he joins the Federal Service and goes through the toughest boot camp in the universe as an interstellar war between Earth and an alien species known as Arachnids rages on. Although the novel was very successful, even winning the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1960, some have criticized it for its militaristic and fascist elements. Verhoeven took the concept to the extreme for his movie, presenting a satire of authoritarian governance.

Blomkamp will also produce the new Starship Troopers movie alongside his wife and partner, Terri Tatchell, who co-wrote District 9 and Chappie.

The racing drama Gran Turismo has just sped its way to Digital, and Cbr has an exclusive clip to premiere teasing the special features included.

"How can the motion of high-speed be conveyed to the audience in a way that feels visceral?" director Neill Blomkamp says in the clip, touching on the behind-the-scenes content that will be featured in the home release. Along with over 10 minutes of deleted scenes, Jann Mardenborough, whose own story inspired the film, is also interviewed. Commenting on playing the stunt race car driver for the actor who played him, Archie Madekwe, Mardenborough said, "It is very weird to see that I'm playing myself as a stunt driver."

Sony Pictures' high-speed biographical sports drama, Gran Turismo, is all set to arrive on digital this week.

Directed by Neill Blomkamp, known for his work on the dystopian film District 9, the film had made its theatrical debut at the very end of the previous month and is currently in its fifth week only. The digital release of Gran Turismo is slated for this coming Tuesday, Sept. 26, as confirmed by Sony. This Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) release almost follows the standard timeline for recent Sony Pictures releases, with a modest 32-day gap between theatrical and online availability. In comparison, the blockbuster animated film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, spent 46 days in theaters before its digital debut, thanks to its $690 million worldwide collection.

While the digital release approaches, there are currently no confirmations about the Blu-ray release date and streaming options for Gran Turismo.

Mere weeks after hitting theaters, Sony Pictures' racing epic Gran Turismo had its online release date confirmed.

Gran Turismo director Neill Blomkamp knew exactly when he landed his lead for the racing biopic, going out of his way to make special adjustments.

Blomkamp cast relative newcomer Archie Madekwe as gamer-turned-racer Jann Mardenborough, identifying him as "an amazing actor and very centered person." In the film, Mardenborough beats out 90,000 other entrants in a 2011 tournament to secure a racing contract despite never previously driving one. Similarly, Blomkamp described screening many potential actors but finding Madekwe "perfect for the movie" — bar some necessary adjustments.

In an interview with The Wrap, the director, best known for the dystopian sci-fi film District 9, admitted to not being very keen on Sony's idea to adapt the video game film, quoting, “There’s no way that you can make a movie out of Gran Turismo. It doesn’t make any sense.” Blomkamp revealed that after a mixed reception of his film Chappie, also a sci-fi dystopian film, he went on to explore different ventures through Oats Studios, creating visually striking short films. Although the shorts could lay the groundwork for future films, Blomkamp revealed their alignment with the video game industry.

Simultaneously, his involvement with potential projects in the Alien and RoboCop universes also faced setbacks.

The only on-set crash during the filming of Gran Turismo involved Orlando Bloom, who crashed one of the Gt-r's while testing a cut post-credits scene. Bloom wanted a driving scene because his character doesn't drive in the movie, but the crash happened during a test lap with an instructor evaluating his driving. Although the film didn't include a post-credits scene with Bloom driving, Gran Turismo still delivers high-octane racing sequences that highlight Jann Mardenborough's beginnings as a professional racer.
