Image
Elle Fanning is opening up about Hulu’s cancellation of The Great and imagining what her character would be doing next.

The streamer axed the Tony McNamara-created series after three seasons. News of the cancellation came in the middle of the SAG-AFTRA strike which kept actors from sharing their thoughts. With the actors back in business, Fanning is now sharing her thoughts on social media.

“Scrolling down memory lane… I haven’t been able to properly share my thoughts after the news of The Great’s cancellation. This show has meant the world to me,” Fanning said on Instagram. “The experiences shared. The memories I’ll never forget. Tony McNamara is a certified genius. The last 3 seasons have shaped me. Through playing Catherine I discovered parts of myself I didn’t know I had. I love every crew member and cast member deeply.”

Hulu Cancels Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult's The Great After Three Seasons
Image
Hulu has canceled The Great despite its critical acclaim and Emmy Awards, leaving fans disappointed and uncertain about the reasons behind the decision. The Great has three seasons available to stream on Hulu, allowing audiences to enjoy the tumultuous relationship between Catherine and Peter and their journey for power.

Hulu's The Great Canceled After 3 Seasons
Image
Hulu has canceled The Great after three seasons, ending the possibility of a fourth season. It is unclear why the show was canceled, and Hulu declined to comment. The show took a bold turn in season 3 by killing off a major character and paving the way for Catherine's progression.

Hulu has canceled The Great after three seasons. Debuting in May 2020, The Great is a comedy show described as an “anti-historical” story, loosely based on the real rise to power of Catherine the Great, Empress of All Russia (played by Elle Fanning), and her attempts to rid of her husband Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). But the show, created by Tony McNamara, took a big leap in its recently concluded third installment by killing off a major character and clearing the path for its titular protagonist to move forward.

Deadline has now confirmed that Hulu has canceled the Emmy-nominated comedy, meaning that...

The Great Canceled at Hulu
Nicholas Hoult
Well, this will go down as one of the most shocking cancellations ever.

Hulu has canceled the Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult comedy The Great after three seasons.

The sad news was first reported by Deadline.

Created, written, and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great followed Catherine The Great's story as "an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter," according to the official description.

"Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change."

"All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside."

News of the cancellation comes over three months on from the premiere of The Great Season 3, which unspooled all episodes on May 12.

The series enjoyed success with critics and on the awards front, and there had...

“The Great” is not returning for Season 4 on Hulu, Variety has confirmed.

The satirical take on Catherine The Great’s story painted the historical figure as “an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside,” according to the official description.

The series starred Elle Fanning as Catherine, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.

Hulu Cancels ‘The Great’ After 3 Seasons
Image
No Huzzahs will be had today. In something of a surprise, Hulu has canceled “The Great,” the period comedy series from creator Tony McNamara that starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, IndieWire has confirmed.

The series will end after airing three seasons, with the most recent season dropping back on May 12. The show is nominated for an Emmy this year after landing acting nominations for both Fanning and Hoult in its standout second season. It’s been nominated for seven Emmys in all. The show had also been nominated for several Golden Globes, Film Independent Spirit Awards, WGA and SAG Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.

Hulu had no comment.

It’s unclear whether the show’s cancellation is related to the ongoing writers and actors strike, which has resulted in several shows being un-renewed of late, or other factors.

“The Great” starred Fanning as a mostly-fictionalized version of Catherine the Great,...

‘The Great’ Canceled at Hulu After Three Seasons
Image
Hulu has canceled its period dramedy The Great after three seasons.

The news comes some three-and-a-half months after the show’s third (and now final) season premiered as a binge release in May. The series stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult and explores the relationship of Russian Empress Catherine II and Emperor Peter III in the 18th century.

The show earned seven Emmy nominations over the course of its run, winning the award for outstanding period costumes last year. Fanning and Hoult also earned acting nominations in 2022, and series creator Tony McNamara and director Matt Shakman scored writing and directing nods for the series’ premiere episode in 2020.

The Great was also a critical favorite, earning nearly universally positive reviews across all three of its seasons. How many people watched it, however, remains a mystery as Hulu (like most other streamers) doesn’t share much viewing data and season three did...

‘The Great’ Canceled After 3 Seasons on Hulu
Nicholas Hoult and Elle Fanning in The Great (2020)
“The Great” will not return for a fourth season at Hulu. The streaming service canceled the period drama after three critically acclaimed seasons.

The series was created, written and executive produced by “The Favourite” screenwriter Tony McNamara, and it starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult in a kooky tale about the life of Russian empress Catherine the Great.

The third season, which dropped all episodes on May 12, followed Catherine (Fanning) and her husband Peter (Hoult) as they worked on their relationship following her staged coup to take control of Russia. Thankfully, the Season 3 finale provided some closure to Catherine’s story, as it featured her growing into her role as leader while grieving a major loss.

The reasons for the cancellation are unclear, given the show’s garnered strong fan response as well as seven Emmy nominations since debuting in 2020. The drama won the Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in...

Shocker! ‘The Great’ Canceled By Hulu After 3 Seasons
Image
Exclusive: Ok, this one hurts. Hulu has canceled fan favorite The Great after three seasons.

The series starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great reinvented the period drama by revisiting the life of Catherine the Great, Russia’s reigning empress from 1762 to 1796. It depicted an iconic character and her place in history through a unique prism.

The third season dropped May 12 and revolved around Catherine (Fanning) and Nicholas (Hoult) working on their marriage.

It’s unclear what made the streamer decide to cancel the comedy, which garnered positive reviews and seven Emmy nominations since launching in 2020. It won an Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in 2022, the same year that Fanning and Hoult earned their first nominations for headlining the popular series. Fanning also received numerous other accolades for her performance as Catherine, including a SAG, a Critics Choice, an Independent Spirit...

The Great Season 2 Ending Explained
Image
While the The Great season 2 ending seemed prepared to provide a peaceful resolution, the final minutes add a complicated twist to the ending that needs to be explained. The sudden twist ending in The Great season 2’s conclusion is not entirely unexpected in retrospect as it follows a similar pattern to the closure of The Great season 1. The Great season 2 started four months after the events of the first season and concludes Catherine’s (Elle Fanning) coup against Peter (Nicholas Hoult) to take the Russian throne as she forces him to sign papers of abdication.

As Catherine works to keep a firm grasp on the throne, Peter attempts to make her fall in love with him. This plan is complicated when Peter ends up sleeping with, and accidentally killing, Catherine’s mother Joanna (Gillian Anderson). In The Great season 2 ending, Catherine appears to forgive Peter for his actions. However, in the final minutes,...

The Great Season 3 Trailer: Catherine & Peter Attempt Marriage Counseling After Turmoil
Image
The trailer for The Great season 3 teases lead characters Catherine and Peter unexpectedly trying to repair their uniquely complicated marriage. The Hulu original series, created by Tony McNamara, has already seen two successful seasons as a satirical black comedy drama loosely based on the life and rise to power of the longest-reigning Empress of Russia, Catherine II. Starring Elle Fanning as the titular ruler and Nicholas Hoult as her pompous husband Peter III, The Great season 2 left off with the central pair's tumultuous relationship becoming more vicious than ever as Catherine unsuccessfully conspires to have Peter murdered and imprisons his friends.

Hulu released the trailer for The Great season 3, teasing a rowdy and raunchy upcoming installment. The trailer shows Catherine and Peter engaged in what appears to be marriage counseling to address their increasingly harrowing marital issues amid Catherine's growing ambitions as Russia's ruler.

On the other hand, Peter experiences...

‘The Great’ Season 3 Trailer: Catherine and Peter Try to Reconcile
Image
Catherine and Peter attempt to figure out a way to move forward after the events of season two in the trailer for Hulu’s The Great season three. The cast also includes Phoebe Fox as Marial, Sacha Dhawan as Count Orlo, Belinda Bromilow as Aunt Elizabeth, and Adam Godley as Archie. Gwilym Lee plays Grigor Dymov, Charity Wakefield is Georgina, Douglas Hodge is General Velementov, and Bayo Gbadamosi plays Arkady.

‘The Great’ EPs & Stars Tease Season 2’s “Parental Theme” & The Imprisonment Of Peter III – TCA
Image
On Friday, the creators and stars of The Great stopped by TCA to tease the second season of their acclaimed Hulu comedy, which is set to premiere on November 19.

Creator, writer and EP Tony McNamara, EP Marian Macgowan, and EP-actor Nicholas Hoult were joined on the panel by EP-actor Elle Fanning, who touched on a “parental theme” running through the season, with regard to her character, Catherine the Great.

“Catherine [is] grappling with the fact that she’s going to become a mother soon,” said Fanning. “The baby is also kind of her protection because she knows while [he’s] in there she’s safe, and Peter’s not going to kill her.”

Hoult noted that for at least part of Season 2, his character Peter III is “in imprisonment and confinement.” The overthrown Russian Emperor will deal with the situation by “trying to better himself,” attempting to learn the French language, among other new skills.

Netflix announced the final season of “Dear White People” will launch Sept. 22 and be a musical season.

“The only way to move forward is to throw it back,” a teaser for the season previews. From there a cover of Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It” kicks into gear.

The teaser also shows the students getting ready to dance, with snapping of hands and getting into formation to perform Jordan’s 1995 hit. There is an Afro-futuristic and 1990s-inspired dance floor, as the students of the fictional Winchester University look back on their time on campus amid their final year.

“Dear White People,” an extension of the film of the same name by Justin Simien, deals with issues of race, class and sexuality on that college campus. Logan Browning’s Sam White hosts a radio show within the series that is also titled “Dear White People” and is where...

War of the Worlds Season 1 Recap: Aliens, Cyborg Dogs, Emily, Sacha and the Mystery Tattoo
Image
Warning: contains major spoilers for War of the Worlds season one.

The first thing to remember about Howard Overman’s moodily atmospheric War of the Worlds is that if novelist H.G. Wells were here today (and had the required TV streaming package), he probably wouldn’t recognise it as his story. Aside from an alien invasion that wipes out much of Earth’s population, the TV drama had little crossover with Wells’ novel. Instead of tripods with heat rays, it had cyborg dogs with machine gun heads. Instead of a solitary journalist wandering around Woking, it had a large cast of scientists, soldiers, teenagers and others, spread across the UK and France. Instead of dealing with themes of colonial imperialism, it was mostly about family and loss. And instead of red weed-spreading Martians it had… well, that’s the question. Ahead of season two’s arrival on Epix in the...

Golden Globes Final Predictions: Best TV Series (Comedy or Musical) – ‘Ted Lasso’ Scores a Goal

Variety's Awards Circuit is home to the official predictions for upcoming awards. To see all the latest predictions, of all the categories, in one place, visit The Collective

2021 Golden Globe Final Predictions:

Best TV Series (Comedy Or Musical)

Updated: Feb. 24, 2021

Awards Commentary:

Believe. It’s Ted Lasso’s mantra in “Ted Lasso,” and it could be the show’s motto as well. Apple TV Plus got into the awards game last year with “The Morning Show,” and now “Ted Lasso” could score it even more high-profile wins. As the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. prides itself on being first to award buzzy new shows (thanks in part to its place on the calendar), giving “Ted Lasso” the top prize before the Emmys have a chance seems like an obvious play for the org. Of course, standing in its way is “Schitt’s Creek,” which already swept the Emmy Awards in September and...

Hulu followed up her pic with a caption of their own that read, “In season two, Catherine becomes both a mother to Russia and a child.” But who’s the father to Catherine’s unborn baby: Nicholas Hoult‘s Peter III of Russia (her husband), Sebastian De Souza‘s Leo Voronsky (her lover) or someone else entirely? NBC Announces Supersized ‘Superstore’ Series Finale (TV News Roundup)

‘The Great’ snags two SAG Award nominations, but Elle Fanning strangely misses
Image
“The Great” had a great SAG nominations morning, landing bids in Best Comedy Ensemble and Best Comedy Male Actor for Nicholas Hoult, but the empress herself was robbed. Elle Fanning did not get an individual citation for Best Comedy Female Actor for her turn as Catherine the Great, despite racking up Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe nominations for the performance. So why the discrepancy, SAG Awards?

See ‘The Crown’ leads 2021 Golden Globes nominations with 6, followed by ’Schitt’s Creek’ with 5

Admittedly, Best Comedy Female Actor was a tough category to crack this year, with the five slots taken up by Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy from “Schitt’s Creek,” Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini from “Dead to Me” and Kaley Cuoco from “The Flight Attendant.” Thankfully for Fanning, she does technically have a nomination this year as part of the ensemble for “The Great,” so it is far from a disappointing day.
