Review: Let US In Looks at an Interesting Urban Legend in a Forgettable Package
Image
One week in the fall of 2014, the Birmingham Mail reported on alleged sightings of a paranormal phenomenon known as black-eyed children. The paper interviewed paranormal investigator Lee Brickley, who said a woman told him she had seen a spooky child whose eyes were "completely black, no iris, no white, nothing". This urban legend then filled the front pages of papers like the Daily Star in the following days. What was just a story that started on an online mailing list would soon be the cause of frenzy. These “sightings” increased, gaining enough interest for director Craig Moss and co-writer Joe Callero to make a supernatural slasher all about the myth.

As Let Us In explains in its opening frame, these creatures resemble children with pale skin and black eyes who can be seen hitchhiking or on doorsteps of residential homes. These hooded figures appear for ten days at a time,...

"Whatever you do... never say 'yes.'" Goldwyn Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie sci-fi horror adventure comedy titled Let Us In, the latest from indie genre filmmaker Craig Moss. Arriving on VOD this summer. A rash of teenagers go missing in this small town and one young girl and her best friend step in to figure out what's going on. ‘The Unicorn’ Canceled By CBS After 2 Seasons
Image
CBS has started to pare down its returning series slate for next season, cancelling comedy The Unicorn‘s after two seasons. It is one two sophomore series the network won’t be bringing back, along with drama All Rise. Two other CBS bubble series, Seal Team and Clarice, are eying a move to Paramount+.

From the get-go, the single-camera Unicorn, starring Walton Goggins, has been, well, an unicorn, on CBS, not quite fitting into the network’s traditional sitcom mold.

Yet, the series, which was well received by critics and features one of the strongest comedy casts on TV, had big fans at the highest ranks at CBS, which helped it snag a Season 2 renewal last year for a limited midseason run, which concluded in March.

The Unicorn’s linear ratings were among the lowest on CBS but its Live+Same Day delivery was actually higher than that for the renewed S.

‘All Rise,’ ‘Unicorn’ Canceled by CBS
Image
Both “All Rise” and “The Unicorn” have been canceled at CBS after two seasons each. “All Rise” is set to air its final episode at the end of May, while “The Unicorn” wrapped up in March.

The move to cancel “All Rise” comes less than two months after series creator and co-showrunner Greg Spottiswood was fired from the series following a probe into allegations of race and gender issues in the show’s writer room.

“All Rise” dealt with the lives and relationships of the judges, lawyers, clerks, and law enforcement officers who work at the Los Angeles County Courthouse. Simone Missick starred as newly appointed judge Lola Carmichael, with Wilson Bethel, Marg Helgenberger, Jessica Camacho, J. Alex Brinson, Lindsay Mendez, Ruthie Ann Miles, Lindsey Gort, and Audrey Corsa. Dee Harris Lawrence, Len Goldstein and Michael Robin were executive producers. Warner Bros. Television produced.

“The Unicorn” focused on Wade (Walton Goggins...

Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani in Laxmii (2020)
Diwali set to light up Ott screen
Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani in Laxmii (2020)
New Delhi, Nov 10 (Ians) This year, Diwali fervour will stream onto your Ott screens rather than come alive on the big screen, owing to the ongoing pandemic. An explosion of new content to keep you hooked is being readied to drop on digital platforms, to mark the festival of lights.

"Post re-opening of theatres, there will be a settling period for viewers to gain trust, and confidence on the safety levels, to encourage them to step out to watch their favourite big event movie. OTTs are the best alternative in the current situation. Hence, viewership numbers may witness an upward trend on Ott platforms (during the festive season)," Chandrashekar Mantha, Partner, Deloitte India, told Ians.

In the same vein, trade analyst Girish Johar told Ians: "When it comes to the big screen, Diwali (festive season) is out of the question. So the next window in which there can be a...

Walton Goggins
TV Review: ‘The Unicorn’
Walton Goggins
Its central character, Walton Goggins’s Wade Felton, has been mourning his wife for a year; he and his daughters (Ruby Jay and Makenzie Moss) have reached the stage of acceptance, though the white-hot heat of active grief lifting allows them now to focus on certain confusions they’d been ignoring: How does a family constructed of four people go on, logistically, as three? And what would it mean to make the first, very tentative attempts towards welcoming a new person in?

All of which sounds like the stuff of drama, but “The Unicorn” moves with an easy and light step. Its concerns include learning to talk to daughters about dating and entering the online-matchmaking fray. These plotlines treat every party (from the daughters to the divorcée Wade asks out) with fairness and, crucially, don’t allow Wade to play the bumbling, inept dad. After all, he’s been a...

Leonardo DiCaprio at an event for Inception (2010)
After Playing The Bad Guy, Walton Goggins Does A 180 As The Dad In CBS’ ‘The Unicorn’ – TCA
Leonardo DiCaprio at an event for Inception (2010)
He’s played a bank robber-white supremacist on Justified, a nefarious henchman for Leonardo DiCaprio’s slave hunting Calvin Candie in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, and this weekend you can see him as an obsessed Pentecostal snake handler in 1091 Media’s Sundance acquisition, Them That Follow. That pic, which also stars Oscar winner, Olivia Colman, will be opening in New York and Los Angeles.

But on Sept. 26, on CBS, you can see another side of Walton Goggins, that of widower dad in The Unicorn. The series from Ep/writers Bill Martin and Mike Schiff, was described by some at TCA today as a throwback to the 1969 Bill Bixby series The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, however that series had no direct influence on the creators but their friend, series producer Grady Cooper who lost his wife, and found his way “back into the sunshine. His life got funny. There...

The pickups will maintain Lorre’s — who already has “Mom” and “Young Sheldon” coming back next season — strong relationship with the network, after “The Big Bang Theory” says farewell next week.

‘God Bless the Broken Road’ Film Review: Faith-Based Drama Offers More Facile Homilies
Disney Emmy Win - Directing
Best described as an unbalanced sample platter of vapid conservative beliefs, Harold Cronk’s “God Bless the Broken Road” is not concerned with disputing any of the preconceived notions coastal dwellers may have about Middle America, but rather leans into them shamelessly for a Christian drama squarely aimed at women and veterans.

Seemingly inspired by the eponymous song originally released by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in 1994 and further popularized thanks to country group Rascal Flatts in 2005, the faith-based narrative is the latest cash cow from the team that unleashed the vitriolic, Islamophobic and generally disturbing “God’s Not Dead” franchise. Both the original “God’s Not Dead” and its sequel were directed and co-written by Cronk and became bastions of Evangelical propaganda with combined box-offices grosses of over $80 million. He was, however, not directly involved with this year’s much less successful third installment.

Advantageously set in small-town Kentucky,...

Review: Steve Jobs
We think we know Steve Jobs, the maestro behind Apple but unless you read one of his biographies or watch Jobs or Steve Jobs, you only have impressions. General audiences will recognize the man in the black turtleneck and know he gave us the iPod, iPhone, Macintosh, etc. but most will mistakenly credit him for being the builder of these gadgets.

Read Walter Isaacson’s wonderful biography or study Jobs through the myriad video interviews or articles available online and you come to understand he was a visionary who pushed, prodded, cajoled, wheedled, and demanded his workers to meet his exacting standards.

Capturing that volatile and complex man on film would be a challenge for any production crew but director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin were the kind you wanted for something challenging. Sorkin took Isaacson’s bio as a starting point but then read and read more material.

Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs stars Michael Fassbender as the central player of the digital revolution, with a formidable supporting cast including Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, Jeff Daniels, Michael Stuhlbarg, Katherine Waterston, Makenzie Moss, Perla Haney-Jardine and Sarah Snook.

Screenwriter of David Fincher's The Social Network, Bennett Miller's Moneyball and Mike Nichols' Charlie Wilson's War, Aaron Sorkin, clued me in on his adaptation of Walter Isaacson's biography, Steve Jobs, before sitting down for brunch at The Vault of the St. Regis. Alain Resnais' Last Year In Marienbad, an Iris Apfel quote in Albert Maysles' portrait Iris, an eye tattoo, loving corridors, to be or not be a ghost, Shakespeare, Hegel, the Three Little Pigs and the Holy Trinity, come into play in our conversation.

Steve Jobs – The Review
By Cate Marquis

With Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs, there will now be three films on the late founder of Apple Computers, the man who put portable computers in eveyone’s hand, as this film notes at one point. A few years back, there was the biopic Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher, who has a striking resemblance to Jobs and this year, an excellent documentary by the Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney, called “Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine.” Steve Jobs is a man whose fans admire him with almost cult-like adoration (and just to be clear, this writer is not among them), yet none of these films have presented him in a very flattering light- least of all Boyle’s film.

Director Boyle’s Steve Jobs is not a biography, and Aaron Sorkin’s script does not even focus on Job’s two most significant contributions to the world, making...

One Scene is All it Takes to Win an Oscar For Certain Actresses
By Patrick Shanley

Managing Editor

The amount of screen time an actor has in a film is by no means an indicator of Oscar success. Sometimes one impactful scene is all it takes for the Academy to take notice and reward a performer with a statuette.

This year there are a number of powerful performances that take place in just one scene’s worth of screen time, and Academy history has a few examples that should bolster those actors hopes for nominations and, possibly, even wins.

In Youth, Jane Fonda plays an aging actress with a bit of a mean streak. Her presence on screen is barely longer than five total minutes, but the impression it left with fans at the Toronto International Film Festival this year was significant. In one brief scene she verbally assaults a director (Harvey Keitel) she has known throughout her career, leaving a lasting impact...

Steve Jobs movie review: insanely great (#LFF2015)
You’ve never seen such a compelling, entertaining movie about a genius jerk. As smart and as sleek as a Macbook Pro, and a compulsory bit of modern history. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast and Danny Boyle; huge Mac devotee

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Steve Jobs: Genius. Visionary. Asshole. Steve Jobs is not a traditional biography of the Apple founder and, after it went off the rails in the late 1980s and early 90s, its returning hero and savior. We don’t peek in on his childhood, or on the battle with pancreatic cancer that he eventually lost. This is much narrower, the tale of how one man revolutionized the computer industry and as a result, you know, changed the world. Jobs wasn’t an engineer or a...

Steve Jobs Review
If I hadn’t seen Alex Gibney’s documentary Steve Jobs: The Man Inside The Machine earlier this year, I’d probably be a little more enchanted by Danny Boyle’s Hollywoodized dramatization, Steve Jobs. Written by the quick-witted Aaron Sorkin, this take on Apple’s infamous mogul is a surprisingly brief glimpse into three major turning points in Jobs’ career, focusing on the strained relationship between a man and the child he refused to acknowledge as his own daughter. Where Gibney made us question Jobs’ ethics, and where filmmaker Joshua Michael Stern sought out to chronicle Steve’s rise to power in Jobs, Sorkin fixates on the titular character’s capacity for human emotion, boiling a jagged persona down to what should be a meaningful parental bond. This is the human side of Jobs we finally get to explore – albeit a more glitzy, crowd-pleasing take.

Steve Jobs strikes...

Fassbender Delivers Best Performance of His Career in 'Riveting' 'Jobs' Biopic
'Steve Jobs' movie poster. 'Steve Jobs' movie: 'Riveting, high speed' biopic starring Michael Fassbender at his best On the outside, computers are clean, symmetrical slabs of molded polycarbonate; pleasant, or at least inoffensive, to look at. On the inside, however, the part most consumers don't see, is a bento box of circuit boards, memory chips, wires, graphics cards, and cooling systems, busily processing and moving the innumerable pieces of information that make the unit work flawlessly or, occasionally, crash. What director Danny Boyle's ferocious three-act rocket ride, Steve Jobs, teaches us about its eponymous tech icon, is that he was much like a computer: on the outside, clad in his signature black turtleneck and jeans, he was trim, bespectacled and flawlessly functioning. On the inside, he was on the brink of crashing, his internal Os in constant operation, avoiding, justifying, and occasionally acknowledging his poor treatment of...

Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs (2015)
Steve Jobs review: Michael Fassbender is savagely compelling
Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs (2015)
Aaron Sorkin thrives on the drama of those waiting in the wings. The trademark high-pressure patter of his dialogue is best spoken by backstage characters working down to the wire on something vital, whether it be broadcast news, the American government, or a tech revolution. That his rhythms are a natural fit for the story of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is no surprise, because a major part of Jobs's legacy is transforming Apple's product launches into the kind of high-stakes event worthy of the Sorkin treatment.

Set behind-the-scenes at three different product launches over a 15 year span, Steve Jobs employs a rigid three-act structure for a skilful character study that's closer to Shakespearean melodrama than traditional biopic, directed with smart gusto by Danny Boyle.

We first meet Jobs (Michael Fassbender) moments before the 1984 launch of the Apple Macintosh, in meltdown and abusing an underling (Michael Stuhlbarg) over a technical hitch.

Nyff ’15: ‘Steve Jobs’ a first-rate and friction-filled dissection of an innovator
Steve Jobs

Written by Aaron Sorkin

Directed by Danny Boyle

USA, 2105

Director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) divides this character study of contentious public figure Steve Jobs (Michael Fassbender) between three product launches, focusing on key pressure-cooker moments of his career that portray him at his most capable and least compassionate. The camera stares cynically as he betrays and keeps any potential closeness at a distance in order to uphold his greatness in the public eye. A parade of forsaken relationships creates a chasm between him and the rest of the world that the well-meaning people in his life continuously try to remedy. Although the indictment of his failings significantly softens by the third act, this is by no means a sympathetic account of the rise of the late guru behind Apple’s high-tech domination. Instead, it drives home the cruel single-mindedness that made Jobs an exceptional taskmaster. The film...
