Two Big Feet interview | ‘There’s a big question of what your first feature is going to be’
Headshot
Noah Stratton-Twine talks his improvised creature feature and the desire to make a different kind of British indie… Read more about Two Big Feet below.

An expanded form of this interview will appear in Film Stories issue 56, available in June 2025.

“I grew up in West Sussex, around 30 minutes away from the Five Hundred Acre Wood – this very folkloric forest,” director Noah Stratton-Twine tells me. Most famous as the inspiration for Winnie The Pooh’s (significantly smaller) homestead, its chestnut towers would soon inspire another equally trouser-less character.

“I came up with this movie idea called Ashdown Sasquatch. It was about two elderly monster hunters who would go to Loch Ness, they would go to the woods, and use the idea of getting a Bigfoot on camera, or trying to get the Loch Ness monster on camera, as a means to spend time with each other.”

Two Big Feet is not that movie.

Disney+ Cancels Superhero Series 'Extraordinary' After Two Seasons
Image
Another day, another brutal cancellation. This time, the bad news comes courtesy of the streaming service Disney+, which has made the shocking decision not to continue a unique superhero series with a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Beginning back in 2023, Extraordinary drops audiences into a world where everyone develops superpowers once they hit 18. Well, everyone apart from Jen, who, six years after her 18th birthday, is still waiting for her superpowers to show up.

Both the first and second seasons of Extraordinary were well-received but, sadly, the superhero show will not return for a third. The cancellation of Extraordinary comes alongside another ax dropping, with this one landing on the historical drama Shardlake, which itself has an impressive 81% “certified fresh” score, after just one season. As per Variety, a Disney+ rep thanked the creative teams on both shows, saying:

“Disney+ Original series ‘Extraordinary’ will not be returning for a third season on the service.

Disney+ Superhero Series Gets Canceled After 2 Seasons (Despite 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score)
Image
The Disney+ U.K. original Extraordinary will not be getting another season. The superhero series was one of two shows that has been canceled by the streamer.

Per Variety, Extraordinary has been canceled after two seasons, meaning the show will conclude with the cliffhanger ending in the Season 2 finale. The Disney+ U.K. original Shardlake has also been canceled. The historical mystery series debuted its first season in 2024, and it will not be coming back for Season 2.

Moana 2 crosses a major box office milestone that hasn't been achieved by a Disney animated movie since Frozen II in 2019.

Disney+ Cancels Superhero Show With 100% Rt Score After Cliffhanger Ending
Image
Disney+ has cancelled a critical darling superhero show after a cliffhanger season finale. The streaming service has developed a wide variety of original shows, with a many of them being part of the superhero genre. The vast majority of these are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with titles such as WandaVision, Moon Knight, Agatha All Along, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki earning the franchise a cumulative total of eight Primetime Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations alongside seven Creative Arts Emmy wins out of 52 nominations.

The library of Disney+ shows has expanded considerably since the platform launched in 2019. In addition to the original shows that have been produced in the ensuing half-decade, the library of titles from their various brands including Marvel Studios, 20th Century Studios, and Lucasfilm has expanded due to the introduction of adult profiles for mature content that came in the wake...

‘Extraordinary’s’ Máiréad Tyers on Returning for Season 2 and Jen’s Missing Superpowers: ‘I Enjoy Seeing the Speculation’
Image
Máiréad Tyers’ first on-screen role straight out of drama school was in Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast.” “You don’t really see me in the film at all,” she says. “[But] I’m so proud of it.” A year later, she wrapped her first leading role in U.K. Disney+ original comedy “Extraordinary.” In the show — basically a flatshare sitcom with a twist — Tyers plays 20-something Jen, who is messy, funny and the only person in the world without a superpower.

But Jen can also be selfish and occasionally obnoxious – mostly to her flatmates Carrie (Sofia Oxenham), Kash (Bilal Hasna) and, erm, Jizzlord (Luke Rollason) — and Tyers’ superpower is making her not just relatable, but likeable. So much so that the show, which was created and written by newcomer Emma Moran, has been renewed for a second season, which drops today on Disney+ and on Hulu in the U.S.

Despite coming to prominence via comedy,...

‘Extraordinary’ Creator & Stars Tease ‘Juicy Cliffhanger’ Payoff in Season 2 (Video)
Image
You know what’s Extraordinary? How instantly addictive Hulu‘s raunchy and really smart Britcom is. Season 2 of the hilarious tale set in a world where most folks develop superpowers by the age of 18 returns tomorrow with Gen Z’er Jen (Máiréad Tyers) still not showing any special skills. Of course, she’s got a bigger problem to deal with now that her shapeshifting new beau (Luke Rollason)—who spent three years trapped in the body of a cat—has run into family he doesn’t even remember having. And it’s only going to get crazier from there. “I think because we set up quite a juicy cliffhanger, it was actually quite easy to [plot this season],” says series creator Emma Moran, who sat down with Tyers and costar Sofia Oxenham last month in Pasadena, as you can see in the video above. “It sort of felt like in a way you...

“This is my mind?” Trailer lands for ‘Extraordinary’ season 2
Bilal Hasna, Máiréad Tyers, Luke Rollason, and Sofia Oxenham in Extraordinary (2023)
Disney+ has released the trailer for the highly anticipated second season of the award-winning comedy ‘Extraordinary.’

Season two picks up where season one spectacularly left off, following Jen (Máiréad Tyers) on her powers journey as she enrols as a client at the power clinic. Jen soon discovers that the process of finding her power isn’t as easy as she hoped, and things in the rest of her life aren’t smooth sailing either. Ex-cat, now-boyfriend Jizzlord (Luke Rollason) has had an unexpected revelation about his past, and Kash (Bilal Hasna) and Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) are attempting to be totally mature and dignified about their break-up, which is not easy when they’re still living under the same roof. It seems that Jen and the gang are dealing with new levels of adulting and chaos that none of them are prepared for.

The new cast members include Julian Barratt as George,...

The 10 Best TV Performances of 2023
Image
A list of the 10 best TV performances of the year could be filled exclusively with actors from Succession, Reservation Dogs and Beef, the top three shows shared by both of our Best of 2023 lists. But what fun would that be? You already know that Sarah Snook and Devery Jacobs and Steven Yeun are great. Or you should.

That’s why, when Angie and I set out to do this list, we started with the simple rule: “Nothing from either of our Top 10 lists.” Those performances and those shows have been celebrated amply, and we wanted to cover as many of the year’s standouts as possible.

Oh, and if it seems like most of our favorite performances of the year were from women? You don’t know the half of it. Had we had more time or space, we would have loved to write about Aunjanue Ellis (Justified: City Primeval...

‘Extraordinary,’ ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’ Set for Itvx Under Deal With Disney Entertainment
Under the Banner of Heaven (2022)
FX-produced Hulu series Under the Banner of Heaven, starring Andrew Garfield, and season 1 of British comedy series Extraordinary are set to come to U.K. TV giant ITV’s streamer Itvx in 2024 under a deal with Disney Entertainment.

ITV said on Thursday that Under the Banner of Heaven will stream on Itvx, with Extraordinary airing on both Itvx and ITV2. Both will launch in the first half of next year.

The news comes as Disney, led by CEO Bob Iger, has started looking for additional revenue by licensing some shows instead of keeping them exclusively for its own streaming services.

Under the Banner of Heaven, created by Academy Award winner Dustin Lance Black and starring Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones, is inspired by the true crime bestseller by Jon Krakauer and follows the events that led to the 1984 murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty (Edgar-Jones) and her baby daughter in a...

Extraordinary: Disney+ Super-Power Comedy is Definitely Not For Kids
Image
Not that long ago, the Disney Channel meant kids’ cartoons and shows about toothy pre-teens with crossover pop careers. Now, Disney+ (Hulu in the US) has a comedy series featuring a character named Jizzlord, and nothing means anything anymore. The term ‘Disney Adult’ may currently describe the kind of person who gets married in a Prince Eric wig on a cruise ship, but if this trend continues, we’re going to need it back.

Extraordinary is very definitely for adults. It’s an eight-episode London-set comedy with a filthy sense of humour and a rich premise. In its parallel world, everybody develops a superpower at 18. Flight, maybe, or super-strength, or invisibility… There are powers of the less classic variety too – the ability to summon sea life, say, or to turn anything (anything) into a Pdf. And then there’s Jen (Belfast’s Máiréad Tyers). She’s reached the age of...

Disney+ Greenlights Second Season Of Superhero Series ‘Extraordinary’ From ‘Killing Eve’ Producer Sid Gentle
Bilal Hasna, Máiréad Tyers, Luke Rollason, and Sofia Oxenham in Extraordinary (2023)
Disney+ has handed a second season order to Extraordinary – the superhero series from up-and-coming writer Emma Moran and Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle – two days prior to first season launch.

The news was announced at the Extraordinary launch last night in London by Disney VP Scripted Content Johanna Devereaux.

Extraordinary launches later this week and follows Jen, a painfully self-aware 25-year-old woman who doesn’t have a superpower in a world where everyone else does. Adrift in a big, confusing world and armed with nothing but a bit of hope, Jen begins her journey to find her maybe-superpower.

Up-and-comer Máiréad Tyers leads alongside a cast including Sofia Oxenham, Bilal Hasna, Luke Rollason, Siobhán McSweeney and Patricia Allison.

The show is testament to the way in which Disney+ international originals mix younger talent with established names. Moran is an up-and-comer with a show on a slate featuring the likes of Sally Wainwright,...

Jack review – talking-penis comedy is coy with the knob gags
Pelayo De Lario
Jack the talking penis introduces the ‘human male’ to whom he is attached. And so begins a juvenile student comedy that isn’t very comical

The penis has got a mind of its own, or so it’s said. Taking that idea one further, this juvenile low-budget British comedy gives a penis a voice, too. And a name: Jack. The thing is, if you go to the bother of giving a speaking role to a penis in a comedy, it really does need to be a funny talking penis, and poor Jack gets only a handful of so-so gags.

At the start of the film, Jack (voiced by director Pelayo de Lario) introduces us to his “human male”. This is Charlie (Luke Rollason), a third-year university student living at home with his mum and dad in suburban London. Charlie is desperate for a girlfriend. Charlie’s major crush is Canadian...
