Snoop Dogg came within seconds — technically, 15.25 of them — of breaking the world record in the 200-meter dash after popping up to run the race at the U.S. Olympic Team track and field trials over the weekend in Eugene, Oregon.
Snoop had some stiff competition in the extremely unofficial trial race, running alongside four-time Olympic medalist Ato Boldon (who won bronze in the 200 meter at the 1996 and 2000 games) and Wallace Spearmon (a 200-meter specialist with several medals from the track and field World Championships). Of course, neither Boldon nor Spearmon has eight platinum albums,...

Cutscenes is a column exploring—and blurring—the intersection of cinema and video games."On a given day, a given circumstance, you think you have a limit. And you then go for this limit and you touch this limit, and you think, 'Okay, this is the limit.' As soon as you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high."―Ayrton Senna, three-time Formula One championship-winning racing driverIn August 2009, the sprinter Usain Bolt ran the 100-meter-dash in 9.58 seconds, beating his own previous world record by 0.11 seconds. With 10 days left before the delayed and (to many) disquieting Summer Olympics start in Tokyo, NBC Olympics executive producer Molly Solomon and three on-air analysts made the case for staying the course.
“As the world emerges from troubled times, we really believe the Tokyo Olympics will be the most meaningful Olympic Games of our lifetime,” Solomon said during a 30-minute press call. Joining her on the line were NBC Olympics analysts Ato Boldon, Rowdy Gaines and Nastia Liukin.
Initially slated for July 2020, the Games were postponed a year due to Covid-19. While large parts of the world managed to escape the oppressive lockdowns this year, Japan has seen a massive spike in infections as the vaccination rollout proceeds slowly. In response to the conditions, medical experts and other voices called for a postponement. In the end, the International Olympic Committee chose not to risk their billions in broadcast revenues and proceed with the Games.
