The ambition behind Carlo Francisco Manatad’s Whether the Weather Is Fine is undeniable. Set in the aftermath of 2013’s Typhoon Haiyan (aka Super Typhoon Yolanda), the film opens on Miguel (Daniel Padilla) waking to the fact that there’s no longer a house surrounding him and his couch. More sleepwalking in disbelief than searching with desperation, he moves to find his mother (Charo Santos-Concio’s Norma) just as his girlfriend (Rans Rifol’s Andrea) finds him. Everywhere they go has been shattered to pieces architecturally, emotionally, and morally—altruism flying out the window as a dog-eat-dog mentality sinks in. And no one can move an inch without running into someone else thanks to an extras list so expansive, their continuous end credit blocks are blindingly dense.

Project development initiative has opened up to projects from the wider Southeast Asian region.

Full Circle Lab, a project development programme backed by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (Fdcp), has announced the 20 projects selected for this year’s edition, which will take place online September 15-29.

The initiative, which is co-headed by Matthieu Darras and Izabela Igel, will be preceded by the Film Industry Conference (September 11-15), which will also be held online and open to a larger audience. Full Circle Lab was initially scheduled to take place in Manila in April, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 coronavirus.

The festival offers a kaleidoscopic trip through modern Asia with over 30 films that range from history-making blockbusters to arthouse gems and documentaries. We are honored to have Martin Koolhoven, Joko Anwar and Vanja Kaludjercic as our jury members. They will hand out awards for Best Film and newly created Best Director and Best Performer from a quality selection of eight titles.

Leviathan leads contenders; 36 films from 21 countries in the running.

Films in the running for the 2014 Apsa for Best Feature Film include Winter Sleep (Turkey, France, Germany), Leviathan (Russia), I’m Not Angry (Iran), The Owners (Kazakhstan), and Memories on Stone (Iraqi Kurdistan, Germany).

Leviathan, also nominated for Achievement in Cinematography for Mikhail Krichman, has received three nominations in total, the most for any film.

In total, 36 films from 21 countries are in the running for awards.

Nominees vying for the award in the Achievement in Directing category are: Rolf de Heer (Charlie’s Country, Australia), Andrey Zvyagintsev (Leviathan, Russia), Im Kwon-taek (Revivre, South Korea), Rakhshan Banietemad (Tales, Iran) and Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Winter Sleep, Turkey, France, Germany).

For the first time, a film from Syria has received a nomination, with Silvered Water, Syria Self-portrait (Syria, France) nominated for the Apsa for Best Feature Documentary.

Winner of the 2005 Cannes Film Festival Camera d’or, Vimukthi Jayasundara (The Forbidden Land) will present Sri Lankan project Hair Of The Dog That Bit You.

The drama is about a female tourist guide’s loss of memory and identity, and her struggle to come to terms with what is left of her life and an unknown future.

Cannes 2009 Best Director winner Brillante Mendoza (Kinatay) has Philippines-France-Germany co-production Fowl in the Apm line-up.
