Ravi Chhabriya’s “Detective Sherdil” (2025) is a straight-up disaster from the get-go. Nothing is redeeming about it. Be it a spectacularly demented plot, a sleuth who just miraculously unlocks a mystery, the embarrassingly tawdry music and editing compete to rattle your patience and nerves. Among an ensemble stacked with respectable, fine actors like Ratna Pathak Shah, Boman Irani, you wonder how they could even be compelled to go through the grind of this blatantly silly film. Diljit Dosanjh gets a flashy introduction, overselling his sleuth’s skills, which is an instant recipe for disaster.
Detective Sherdil (2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
Detective Sherdil (Diljit Dosanjh) is a sleuth of great self-possession. When the film opens, he compares himself to the greats, like Sherlock Holmes and Byomkesh, and adds that he does something that neither had ever done. He makes reels after cracking a case. The film has this jocular spirit, but the humour is so juvenile,...

Forget whodunnit. The bigger question is, whydunit? Why was this anaemic bland murder mystery even made? Was it a death wish? Or maybe a debt to be cleared? Or perhaps someone held the team at gunpoint and ordered a murder mystery with no twist, no surprises, zero interest, from both the makers and the audience.
Sigh! One more dud from Zee5, the Ott streamers who specialize in shooting themselves in the foot. Detective Sherdil is supposed to be funny, acerbic, sharp, and bang-on. He also plays the harmonica whenever he is inspired. It could be dead body or a living nobody: Sherdil has a tune—one tune, mind it—for all occasions. It is like Rajesh Khanna in Mere sapno ki rani without Sharmila Tagore for inspiration.
All this should have made Sherdil the most interesting detective since Sherlock and his Bengali cousin Byomkesh. As played by the normally-likeable Diljit Dosanjh,...

Not only did movies shine on the big screen, but there were also some superb shows in the Ott space. Subhash K Jha shares his picks for the best streaming series for 2024.
Looking back at the plethora of offerings for the year that was, it seems to be a mixed bag. Nothing as radically disappointing as The Archies, though.Come to think of it, some of the series in 2024 outshone what we had on offer in 2023.
1. Heeramandi
Breathlessly awaited, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi is a fountain of gorgeousness. Every frame is a work of art. Every episode, a tapestry of immortality. Nothing like Heeramandi had been seen on the digital platform. What a waste of such exquisite resources! This series belonged on the big screen. If all goes well, it will end up there. Meanwhile, the series on Netflix, is a life saver for the shoddy content the platform has dished out this year.

Here’s Which Stars We Think Would Be Ideal For A Bollywood Version Of The Big Bang Theory (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Imagine The Big Bang Theory in Bollywood! Who would play Sheldon, Leonard, Penny, and the rest of the crew if the beloved American sitcom were to make its way to the vibrant realm of Bollywood? Take a look at our Bollywood wishlist to discover who would suit these cherished roles.
Sheldon Cooper: Ranbir Kapoor Sheldon Cooper: Ranbir Kapoor (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Ranbir Kapoor is probably the best choice to play eccentric genius, Sheldon Cooper. Jim Parsons, who played the character perfectly, required a combination of brilliance, eccentricity, and obsessiveness. The 41-year-old star is the ideal choice to capture Sheldon’s distinct eccentricities and cerebral prowess due to his adaptability and method-acting abilities. His versatility as a character suggests he may perfectly capture Sheldon’s nuanced nature.

Applause Entertainment’s Zindaginama, an AntiMatter production, conceptualized by MPower is a six-tier anthology of stories on mental ailments on SonyLIV. It is a huge leap forward for cinema on the invisible disease. Mental issues are never taken seriously in our country.
“Tu pagal hai kya?” is a flippant mode of banter. This anthology gently points us towards the core issue and yet keeps us engrossed without preaching or, God forbid, screeching. The tone of almost all the six stories, directed by Sahaan Hattangadi, Mitakshara Kumar, Danny Mamik, Rakhee Sandilya, Aditya Sarpotdar and Sukriti Tyagi, is gentle, prodding, sometimes humorous, at times deeply disturbing.
My pick of the lot are Caged where two men, played by Sumeet Vyas and that brilliant young actor from Tumbbad, Mohammad Samad, help one another in discovering and acknowledging their sexual identity. It is a tough story to tell and hats off to Samad for...

The best thing about the Permanent Roommates saga has been its relatable characters. The series, whose previous two seasons were critically acclaimed, is now back with a third season. The first season had been released at a time when the web-series format was relatively new and The Viral Fever, aka Tvf, had cashed in on the vacant space on YouTube. At the time, the characters of Mikesh, aka Mikki, and Tanya, aka Tanu, had captured the zeitgeist of urban India in a very endearing way. Season 2 was not that well received, but the makers have now decided to add to the story by bringing in the third season.
It’s hard to see the series with a fresh lens. The characters evoke a strange sense of nostalgia. Mikesh and Tanya had become the quintessential live-in couple. There have been other shows as well that have tried to recreate the dramedy...

In a politically charged climate, rumors can often become deadly. Hate trumps everything else, and people have to pay the price for their honesty and goodwill. Sudhir Mishra’s Afwaah weaves a provocative story around this pervasive politics of hate and tries to satirize the situation through the motif of rumors.
The plot begins by showing us the characters placed nicely in their surroundings. Rahab Khan is an entrepreneur running a telecom company. Having returned from abroad, he plans to stay in India to expand his business. Vicky Singh is an up-and-coming politician who is on his way to forming an alliance with a powerful minister by marrying his daughter Nivedita. One fateful night, Rahab gets embroiled in local politics when Nivedita elopes, and Rahab helps coincidentally, saving her from Vicky’s goons. Rumors spread around town about him having forcefully taken Nivedita, and the matter took on a religious color.

For the first time Sumeet opened up about his character in the show and said: “The series is a corporate drama and its language is totally corporate. This is a new thing for me, so I have been doing a lot of research and studying for this role.”
Talking about his learning process: “There are many technical terms that I am learning for my role. I have been observing banking-related activities, studying share markets so that when I am on the sets it is easy for me to get into the character.”

Afwaah
Sudhir Mishra is back in form with a film that has a lot of unexplored anger and resentment swimming underneath. The surface tension is killing Nivi, the conflicted fiancée of a bigoted political opportunist, who must take a life-changing call: remain a cow in her ambitious husband’s shed or run. Nivi chooses the latter option.
In Afwaah, Sudhir cranes his neck out of a truck that is probably carrying contraband goods. We suspect it to be one thing, but it turns out to be donkeys which come out braying at the end. This is the only humorous moment in a film that is grim tense and ceaselessly exploratory and never preachy.
In the smoothly political language of an auteur on a night out for dark adventures, Sudhir Mishra writes out a celluloid exposition on religious intolerance and political opportunism. Sumeet Vyas is pitch-perfect as the roguish political leader...

One can observe a growing trend in recent films where a previously ignored aspect in relation to women and their insignificance is taken into consideration and used to change the plot and narrate an impressive story. The insignificance of women, therefore, turns out to be their strength. In “Immerstill,” we had Hannelore Schiller taking her chances to make people aware that women exist despite society considering them unimportant. She wanted society to take up the responsibility for their women. In “Unseen,” we are told through Zenzile Mwale’s life that her insignificance comes of great help to her to reach her beloved husband, irrespective of the murders she commits in her defense.
In “Mrs Undercover,” Anushree Mehta uses the insignificance of Durga (Radhika Apte) to spy on and crack a murder mystery. Durga is reminded by her patriarchal husband (Saheb Chatterjee) that she is just a housewife and knows nothing else.

‘Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!’ actress Radhika Apte, who is seen playing Durga, a housewife and an undercover agent in the spy comedy ‘Mrs Undercover’, said she fell in love with her character the minute she heard the script. Radhika said that now-a-days, women-led films are getting more eyeballs from the viewers.
She said: “I think the premise of the film was really exciting for me. We live in a country where there is a lot of patriarchy and so many women slog days and nights to keep their families happy, and yet go unnoticed so I think it did resonate with me and what I like about Durga is her innocence, her naivety, her clumsiness and even her journey of discovering herself. I think that was really good.”

Acclaimed actress Radhika Apte talks about playing a housewife and undercover agent in the spy comedy ‘Mrs Undercover’.
Radhika will play the role of Durga, a former undercover agent who turns homemaker, and is called back on duty after ten years. She discovers that getting back is not easy because after marriage she has forgotten everything, having devoted all her time to her family.
The 37-year-old actress said: “For me, ‘Mrs Undercover’ is special for many reasons. Not only is spy comedy an unexplored genre in India, but at the very first narration of this film I fell for my character. Durga is funny, kind, sincere, she is also clumsy and unsure of herself, and this film is her journey of discovering her own strength.”
Radhika said that every woman will relate to her on-screen character Durga as it is a story of every housewife who gives up her dreams of a career for family.

India’s Reliance Entertainment, a producer on Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” has pacted with T-Series and Anubhav Sinha’s Benaras Mediaworks to distribute Sudhir Mishra’s “Afwaah,” Sinha’s “Bheed” and Hansal Mehta’s “Faraaz” internationally.
First up is Mehta’s hostage drama “Faraaz,” starring Zahan Kapoor, Aditya Rawal, Juhi Babbar Soni, which releases Feb. 3. The film, which had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, unfolds over one night and is based on an incident in July 2016, where armed gunmen held up customers at the Holey Artisan Bakery, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, for 12 hours, before killing 20 of them and two of the bakery staff.
Bangladeshi auteur Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s “Saturday Afternoon,” based on the same incident, was recently cleared for release after a four-year struggle with the Bangladesh Film Censor Board.
Next up is Sudhir Mishra’s thriller “Afwaah,” starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bhumi Pednekar, Sumeet Vyas and Sharib Hashmi.
