10 Years of Fears at Tampa Bay Screams
Image
Last weekend, we celebrated 10 years of fears at the 10th annual Tampa Bay Screams horror convention. Our afternoon was spent at the Occ Roadhouse and Museum in Clearwater, Florida. Despite the rainy, chilly, weather the pavilion hosting the dealer’s dungeon, panel stage, and film festival was lively and attendees were in good spirits.

While last year’s convention showed the resilience of the Tampa Bay horror communities in the face of seemingly endless budget cuts, this year radiated a sense of confidence and air of “we aren’t going anywhere.” After the Tampa Bay area was hit with two devastating hurricanes in late 2024, events like this are more important than ever as they bolster relationships and support systems in the arts community.

Seeing the menagerie of subgenres and fans is always a treat at conventions like this. There is just as much enthusiasm for the high-concept, high-budget, classics as...

Sun, Screams, and Cinema: Tampa Bay Screams 2024
Image
Floridians take their horror seriously, gladly braving the sweltering June weather for the 9th annual Tampa Bay Screams horror convention last weekend in Pinellas Park, Fl. The event turned the modest Pinellas Park Performing Art Center into a buzzing den of frightful fanatics browsing eclectic collections, meeting stars, and discussing their beloved horror scene.

This convention was a great display of passionate, resilient, horror fans making their twisted ideas a reality. The heat and sporadic thunderstorms made the space feel all the more like a sanctuary for the weird and weary. After a few tumultuous years for the state of the arts in Florida, many event attendees were relieved to see a revival of sorts at Tampa Bay Screams.

“The Tampa Bay Screams June 2024 edition had a lot to live up to from what founder Sean Donohue had established,” said Tampa Bay Screams owner and organizer Andy L. “A lot...

‘I Slay on Christmas’ Review
Image
Stars: Phil Herman, Lauren Sophia, Joel D. Wynkoop, M. Catherine Wynkoop, Sean Donohue, Vera Marlowe, Will Devokees, Penélope Bogado, Walter Alonso, Debbie D, Deborah Dutch, Jim Ewald, A.J. Laird, Justin Bower, Bob Glazier, Jaysen P. Buterin | Written by Joel D. Wynkoop, Sean Donohue, Debbie D, Derek Braasch, Nina Trader | Directed by Joel D. Wynkoop, Sean Donohue, Marcelo Fabini, Debbie D, Derek Braasch

The vignettes that open I Slay on Christmas, the new anthology film from producer Phil Herman, are almost hallucinogenic in their disassociated content and styles. A man runs through the woods only to find his adversary, a pine cone, floating in the air ahead of him as a voice intones his fate. Another man sits on a couch as the weatherman talks about unseasonably warm weather and how it’s helping a virus to spread. When we see him again, he’s bleeding from the nose and mouth and looks like a zombie.

DVD Review: Death-scort Service
Shock reviews Sean Donohue’s unapolegtically offensive Death-scort Service. This will be a relatively short review… Short because a film like Death-scort Service doesn’t ask to be analyzed. It doesn’t want you to like it. It wants you to be offended. It wants to be on the cover of Gorezone magazine. And I would have seriously…
