Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Lisa FrankensteinLisa Frankenstein ends in quite a reverse scenario for its two characters. The film, directed by Zelda Williams from a screenplay by Diablo Cody (who wrote Jennifer’s Body), sees Kathryn Newton’s titular character falling in love with a 19th-century bachelor who was brought back to life by way of a lightning strike. Following the murders of Lisa’s stepmom Janet, a creepy schoolmate, and Lisa’s crush Michael, the Creature and Lisa drive away together, trying to figure out what to do next. Lisa and the Creature take Taffy, Lisa’s stepsister, with them.

Lisa gives Taffy, who is visibly scared of Lisa, her late mother’s rosary and lets her go. Lisa later sews Michael’s penis onto the Creature’s body, and they have sex set to Lisa Frankenstein's soundtrack song...

Image
Real-life experiences often present the most compelling cinematic experiences. Such was the case in Glen Powell’s recently released American disaster movie, Twisters. Created under the directorial vision of Lee Isaac Chung, the movie had more in common with Powell than the audience knew about.

How to Roast a Comedian and Other Trade Secrets From Hollywood’s Top Production Designers
Image
Girls5eva Girls5eva, on Netflix, went with a ’90s-themed party.

Teresa Mastropierro says that since Girls5eva began, she had a box of CDs under her desk “just waiting for their day in the sun.” So when she heard that the eponymous girl group would be performing at a mansion for a nostalgia-themed birthday party in season three’s “Orlando,” Mastropierro knew she had to put those artifacts to good use and build a curtain out of them for a stage of pure ’90s splendor.

In the episode, birthday girl Taffy (Catherine Cohen), married to a rich sugar daddy, is throwing a bash where the posters from her teenage bedroom come to life, so Mastropierro thought “tacky teenager” for the decor. “We chose things that felt young and then tried to find the most over-the-top version of it that we could come up with,” the production designer explains. For ’90s touches,...

‘Lisa Frankenstein’ 4K Uhd Review
Image
Stars: Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Liza Soberano, Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest, Carla Gugino | Written by Diablo Cody | Directed by Zelda Williams

Billed as “a coming of Rage story”, this undead comedy-horror is directed by Zelda Williams (daughter of Robin) and scripted by Diablo Cody, making a return to the teen girl horror genre after her 2009 cult hit Jennifer’s Body. As befits a film involving various dismembered body parts, Lisa Frankenstein is occasionally patchy and clumsily put together, but the witty script and fun performances carry it through.

Set in 1989, the film centres on Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), who’s still withdrawn after witnessing her mother’s butchering during a home invasion by an axe murderer. Meanwhile, her taciturn father (Joe Chrest) has moved on and remarried, meaning that Lisa now has both an evil stepmother (Carla Gugino) and a popular, kind-hearted, but not too bright sister-in-law, Taffy (Liza Soberano).

Cole Sprouse and Kathryn Newton in Lisa Frankenstein (2024)
Lisa Frankenstein has already been given a digital release
Cole Sprouse and Kathryn Newton in Lisa Frankenstein (2024)
The horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein (you can read our review Here), which came to us from director Zelda Williams (making her feature directorial debut) and screenwriter Diablo Cody, just reached theatres on February 9th… and it hasn’t exactly been a smash, drawing just $9 million at the domestic box office so far. Maybe now it will be able to draw in more viewers, as they’re going to have the chance to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes: Universal Pictures has already given Lisa Frankenstein a digital release, and it’s available to watch through sites like Amazon.

Set in 1989, Lisa Frankenstein has the following synopsis: A coming of Rage love story from acclaimed writer Diablo Cody about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the...

Kathryn Newton Tries to Date an Undead Cole Sprouse in ‘Lisa Frankenstein’ Teaser
Image
Kathryn Newton tries to spark a romance with Cole Sprouse’s reanimated corpse in the teaser trailer for Lisa Frankenstein.

Focus Features is set to release Zelda Williams’ feature directorial debut in theaters Feb. 9, just in time for a twisted Valentine’s Day date option. The film centers on Lisa (Newton), a high school outcast who is smitten with a handsome corpse (Sprouse) from the Victorian era and accidentally brings him back to life. Carla Gugino, Liza Soberano and Joe Chrest round out the cast.

The trailer features a lot of axe-swinging as the potential relationship takes some bloody turns. “Taffy says it’s a waste of time to try and fix a boy,” Newton tells her undead suitor about a friend’s advice. “It’s better to just accept a guy’s flaws.”

Williams helms the comedic horror flick from a script by Oscar-winning scribe Diablo Cody. The latter and Mason Novick are producers,...

In Praise of Mink Stole, Trash Cinema’s Greatest Character Actress
Image
Multiple Maniacs. Photographs by Lawrence Irvine courtesy and copyright Dreamland Studios.John Waters still shocks. While the Pope of Trash may now be something of a respectable elder to queer cinema, appearing on talk shows and making annual movie recommendations for Artforum, his films have retained their ability to surprise and challenge the status quo. Works like Mondo Trasho (1969) and Multiple Maniacs (1970) have kept audiences squirming in their seats (and reaching for the barf bags), but they’ve also gained their long-denied critical understanding. They’re now taken seriously, viewed as earnestly as any kind of “respectable” film that doesn’t feature singing anuses, mother-son incest, or rape via giant lobster. Pink Flamingos (1972) is almost certainly the only film in Sight and Sound’s Top 250 greatest films of all-time list that features its lead eating dog feces from the sidewalk.Yet not every aspect of the Waters canon has been given its rightful due.

Sarah Timberman (‘Fleishman Is in Trouble’ executive producer) on being on the set and ‘laughing to the point of crying’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
First-time novelists aren’t usually given cart blanche to adapt their own work, particularly when they have also never before produced anything for film or television. But longtime journalist Taffy Brodesser-Akner, a longtime freelancer and now staff writer for The New York Times Magazine. After writing her bestselling “Fleishman Is in Trouble” in 2019, longtime producer Sarah Timberman fell in love with Brodesser-Akner’s writing. And so did everyone else. “I think she had like 24 offers (to adapt the book),” Timberman recalls, “and we just sort of pursued it doggedly and sent it to FX and they got on board really quick, and that’s where it began.” The result was the eight-part FX on Hulu limited series that starred Jesse Eisenberg, Lizzy Caplan and Claire Danes, earned consistently glowing reviews (87% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and landed seven Emmy nominations (including for Best Limited Series on which Timberman served as an...
