Jason Bateman's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
Jason Bateman has been in the acting business since he was a child, and though he had a lot of projects as a child and teen performer, Bateman’s best movies and tv shows are all from his career as an adult. His career began with television commercials in the 1980s before he gained roles in shows like Little House on the Prairie and Silver Spoons. Though a lot of working child actors might not be able to successfully transition to more adult roles, Bateman did, and he found his niche mostly in comedic roles.

Bateman also made history when he directed episodes of The Hogan Family in the 1980s at just 18 years old. At the time, he was the youngest member of the Directors Guild of America. Bateman directed three episodes of the show, and as an actor today, he often pulls double-duty as a director too. He has...

'Carry-On' Lands in Netflix's Top 5 Streaming Films, Dethroning a Fan-Favorite Movie
Image
Ever since its debut before the holiday season, Carry-On has been a big hit for Netflix, securing solid reviews and audience feedback that has turned into a considerable amount of views for the platform. As the film has steadily climbed in viewership, Carry-On has begun to become one of Netflix's top-performing films and has just recently knocked a fan-favorite sequel directed by Rian Johnson out of their Top 5.

Per Variety, Carry-On has entered Netflix's most popular English-language films list at number five, with a total of 149.5 million views since it debuted on the streamer last month. By cracking the Top 5, Carry-On knocks Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery out of the fifth spot, and joins the ranks of Red Notice (currently holding the top spot), Don't Look Up, The Adam Project, and Bird Box. All of these films have put in stellar numbers that Carry-On could very well encroach on.

Taron Egerton's Carry-On Certifies Its Popularity by Joining a Prestigious Netflix List
Image
Netflix has a complicated history of deciding which projects are worth it and which aren't. Despite its stellar cast starring Taron Egerton, Jason Batemen, Theo Rossi, and Danielle Deadwyler, there was no guarantee Carry-On would have the success it's experiencing.

The Christmas thriller debuted on the first spot in the charts after its Dec. 13 premiere and has been holding on to the first spot since then. For the week between Dec. 30 and Jan. 6, Carry-On is still holding on to the first place and has already hit an important achievement. The additional screenings since its premiere helped Carry-On fly to the Most Popular English Top 10, debuting in fifth place with 149.4 million views in less than a month since its premiere, Netflix confirmed.

‘Carry-On’ Review: Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman Face Off in Netflix’s Satisfyingly Tense Airport Thriller
Image
When the manager of the transportation security officers at Lax greets his bleary-eyed employees with a chipper “good morning” at the beginning of Carry-On, Jaume Collet-Serra’s low-key gripping thriller, his voice drips with sarcasm.

It is Christmas Eve at the bustling airport, which means it is decidedly not a good morning. The stakes are high for the hundreds of agents responsible for shepherding anxious and impatient travelers through security checkpoints. The bag scans, the body searches and the changing instructions around shoes and laptops are triggering for a citizenry worn down by the post-9/11 security apparatus. So truthfully, it’s a bad morning — and, at least for Ethan Kopek (an excellent Taron Egerton), it’s about to get worse.

Carry-On, which premieres on Netflix this Friday, Dec. 13, follows the slacker Tsa agent through what might be his most challenging day on the job. It begins on fairly normal grounds,...

‘Carry-On’ Review: Taron Egerton And Jason Bateman Play Tense Cat-And-Mouse Game In Netflix’s Time-Bomb-Ticking Holiday Airport Thriller
Image
In an attempt to most obviously appeal to fans of Die Hard (and who isn’t?), director Jaume Collet-Serra has come up with something designed for them, especially for those who like Christmas movies that will freak you out.

Of course Die Hard was a hard-core action thriller set in a office tower in Century City at Christmas, but many are hard-pressed to call it a “Christmas movie” — even though it always turns up near the top of Yuletide favorites. Collet-Serra, in setting a thriller on Christmas Eve during the most crowded time imaginable for travelers, put his film Carry-On at Lax, one of the world’s busiest airports, and that becomes the perfect setting if you want a heart-racing action flick with a holiday chaser.

Of course a film like this is unquestionably derivative with elements of any number in the genre from Speed to Phone Booth, and other...

Carry-On Review: Taron Egerton's Uneven Netflix Thriller Gets More Fun As It Dumbs Down
Image
For at least the first half of Carry-On, I often noticed my thoughts wandering away from the action onscreen. This is something I pay attention to more closely when watching to review – it's always notable when a movie doesn't hold your focus, even if it's not always to blame. But I was more aware of it than usual this time because I wasn't thinking about my day, or my next meal, or what I had to do tomorrow. My wandering thoughts never really left the movie. I was not thinking about Carry-On the story, but Carry-On the story vehicle.

James Gunn Contemplated Bringing Robert Pattinson’s Batman Into Dcu
Image
James Gunn is set to introduce a rebooted DC Universe with Creature Commandos this week, but he contemplated beginning the new cinematic universe using the Caped Crusader. Matt Reeves' The Batman operates in its own Elseworld timeline far away from other superheroes, and it has worked wonders to create a grounded, epic crime saga that audiences have fallen in love with. However, it seems DC Studios did in fact think about putting Robert Pattinson's Batman in the Dcu.

While on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn talked about the upcoming Dcu and was asked if he originally thought he might have to implement The Batman into the larger cinematic universe. Furthermore, if he has reevaluated his stance on keeping things separate. Gunn teases that he has "contemplated" everything when it comes to the rebooted universe, and Batman is no exception. However, he reassures fans that he is committed to...

Stephen King Calls Out Today's Streaming Shows on Threads for Being Too "Dark"
Image
There’s no denying that acclaimed horror author Stephen King watches a lot of TV shows and movies. Before he made the jump to the social media platform Threads, he regularly shared his opinion on some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters and hidden gems over on Elon Musk’s X. Though the platform is different, King remains the same as he ever was, recently calling out a big problem that a lot of us have with many modern productions.

Taking to his Threads account, King posed the question, "Are a lot of streaming shows f**king dark, or is it me?" His query prompted a variety of responses, mainly because people at first weren’t sure if he meant "dark" as in content, or "dark" as in "someone should turn on the lights" After clarifying that he meant "visually dark" and adding, "even the funny ones," it all became clear...

The Batman's James Gordon Actor Pitches Surprising Idea for Next Villain
Image
Despite DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn’s confirmation that a script for The Batman: Part II hasn’t been finished, one actor from The Batman (2022) has an interesting idea of who could be the villain in writer-director Matt Reeves's follow-up. Jeffrey Wright, who played James Gordon in The Batman told The Movie Dweeb that the son of James Gordon, James Gordon Jr., would make for a great adversary for the caped crusader.

“There’s a lot to choose from,” said Wright when asked which character from the universe he would like to see tangle with Gordon and Batman. “You know, Gordon actually has a son who becomes somewhat nefarious. That could be a possibility,” said The Hunger Games actor. Gordon’s son has never been adapted into a live-action version of Batman.

It seemed as though Wright had thought of the idea before because he said he had “some ideas,...

'The Batman' Star Confirms Role in Scrapped 'Gotham Pd' Series
Image
Jeffrey Wright, who played Commissioner Jim Gordon in Matt Reeves's The Batman, has now provided some insight on the scrapped Gotham Pd series that was once in development for HBO. Set within Reeves's The Batman universe, the series would have centered on a third generation Gotham cop who realizes he's on the wrong side of the law. Boardwalk Empire showrunner and The Sopranos executive producer Terence Winter would have served as the show's main creative lead before the project fell apart back in 2022. During an interview with The Playlist's "Bingeworthy" podcast, Wright confirmed that he was in early talks to have his iteration of Gordon appear in Gotham Pd.

"Yeah, there was a possibility. And then things happen behind the scenes. But Gordon wasnt to have been central to that, which I thought was cool, too. He was going to pop in and out of that."

Winters also previously revealed that,...

'The Batman' Actor Barry Keoghan Doesn't Know When He'll Reprise Joker Role

The Batman Director Reveals Oz Cobb and Selina Kyle's Scrapped Subplot
Image
This article contains Major Spoilers for The Penguin Episode 8, "A Great or Little Thing."

The Penguin's titular villain transcended his previous depictions in film and comics. Now that Season 2 is on the table, a continuing story could revive one of Oz Cobb's unresolved frustrations.

Oz Cobb was more invested in Selina Kyle than The Batman led audiences to believe. Director Matt Reeves said this was Oz's implicit backstory in The Penguin; it also explains the villain's deep motivations. "Oz will never be sated in trying to achieve power, and a thing in the movie which we cut out where Oz clearly had these feelings for Selina," he told THR. "And when he realized she didn't return them, he tells her, 'One day, this city's going to be mine.' And he said it in a very unsettling way." That scene would have made Oz's story more compelling in The Penguin,...

Terrorist Jason Bateman Terrorizes Taron Egerton in Teaser for Netflix Christmas Movie ‘Carry-On’
Image
Jason Bateman has gone real no-more-Mr. Nice Guy on us.

The “Ozark,” “Horrible Bosses,” and “Game Night” star puts on a domestic-terrorist face (and hat) in the teaser for Netflix Christmas movie “Carry-On.” It’s, ah, not exactly “Elf.”

In “Carry-On,” before Bateman can terrorize a Christmas Eve flight, he first must make Taron Egerton’s job a living hell. Oh, and he might just kill the young Tsa agent’s significant other, played by Sofia Carson, as well.

“One bag for one life,” is Bateman’s blackmail offer.

We’re guessing he doesn’t have Clear.

Basically, Bateman targets Egerton to let his mysterious suitcase through the security scanners and onto the airplane. We don’t quite know (yet) what is in the package, but considering the gunfire and Tom Cruise-esque sprinting through the airport, Bateman’s cargo is probably a bit worse than nail clippers.

“There’s...

How Awkwafina's Breakout Performance Made History at the Golden Globes
Image
The Farewell allowed Awkwafina to showcase her dramatic talent, proving she can handle mixed roles beyond comedy. The film's cultural impact was significant, featuring an all-Asian cast and using the director's real family, adding authenticity. Awkwafina's historic Golden Globe win for Best Actress sends a powerful message to marginalized Asian actors and opens doors for greater opportunities in Hollywood.

When people consider the career of Awkwafina (née Nora Lum) they often think of the goofy characters and over-the-top performances in such films as Shang Chi (2021) and Crazy Rich Asians (2018). However, she has also played her share of dramatic roles. Yet none of these roles compare to her first real dramatic turn in the 2019 film The Farewell.

There is something to be said for allowing a mainly comedic actress the chance to participate in drama. Yet, this film holds the door open for Akwafina and presents her with opportunities that other...

The Batman Was Supposed to Be Released in Theaters Today
Image
The Batman was supposed to be released in theaters today, but thanks to the pandemic, it just wasn't meant to be. Early last year, the anticipated superhero movie started production with Matt Reeves directing and Robert Pattinson starring as the new Bruce Wayne. It was perhaps the worst possible time to start rolling cameras, as the subsequent spread of Covid-19 months later shut down nearly every major movie and television production across the globe.

In March of last year, Reeves revealed that filming on The Batman had been suspended indefinitely until it was safe to start shooting again. This prompted Warner Bros. to push the release back from June 25 to October 1. When the project finally resumed filming in September 2020, Pattinson was diagnosed with Covid-19 just days later, causing yet another delay. It all mounted up to the studio deciding to release the movie on March 4, 2022, to give Reeves and crew...

Leaked The Batman Images Reveal Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne
Image
Perhaps coming straight from a new teaser expected to debut at this weekend's DC FanDome, images of Robert Pattinson in character as The Batman seem to have leaked online. Previously, director Matt Reeves revealed a sneak peek at Pattinson under the cowl, giving us our first look at how the Twilight star will appear when suited up as the Dark Knight. Now, there are new photos floating around on social media said to be leaked directly from the teaser footage of Pattinson's take of the superhero's alter ego, Bruce Wayne.

In two of the images, Robert Pattinson can be seen brooding rather well, which is certainly a must-have qualification to play Batman. Another photo shows him apparently working on the Batmobile. Of course, the legitimacy of the photos have yet to be officially confirmed by Warner Bros.,...

The Batman Fan-Made 3D Art Reveals New Batsuit in Daylight
Image
So far, all we have really seen of Robert Pattinson's The Batman suit is a red-tinted, dark image courtesy of director Matt Reeves back in February. Whilst the short footage gave fans a reasonably good idea of what the suit will look like, there is still much that remains a mystery. Well, this fanmade, well-lit 3D portrait gives us a pretty good look at the detail of the The Batman's newest suit, and they certainly look like the kind of duds you'd want to be sportin' when taking on the Gotham City underworld.

The image that has been rendered is very impressive, though it is unlikely that The Batman will find the DC superhero standing in the middle of an open field in broad daylight at any stage. The hilarious setting aside, the image gives us a clear visual of the top half of the suit, and what it...

The Batman Is the Next Evolution of Gotham Says Jeffrey Wright
Image
So far, director Matt Reeves' The Batman has left fans both eager and apprehensive in equal measure. With many wanting a continuation of Ben Affleck's adventures under the cowl, the movie is going to have to work pretty hard to win some people over. Well, The Batman star Jeffrey Wright is here to entice you with some details, with the actor describing the movie as the "next evolution" of Batman stories.

"My take is - the way I explain what we're doing is, like with any film, we're working together to create a mood, to create an idea, a setting, a tone. This is the next evolution since 1939 when these stories began."

Claiming that The Batman will be the next step since the iconic DC character's debut is bold, especially considering the sheer number of times that the character has been written and portrayed on both the big and small screen.

Anya Movie Review: A Compelling Blend of Romance, Culture, and Science
Anya could have been a simple love story. But this love story packs an emotional punch with the help of science.

Anya is the first narrative feature from award-winning documentarians Jacob Akira Okada and Carylanna Taylor.

Their earlier endeavor, Painting the Way to the Moon, featured mathematician and artist Ed Belbruno and his discovery of a new way to space travel.

Given their love of science, it shouldn't be a surprise that their first feature explores science enveloped in a lovely romance.

Most couples meet, fall in love, get married, and begin their families. That's what Libby (Ali Ahn) and Marco (Gil Perez-Abraham) believe, too.

The Kominsky Method Season 2: There's Plenty of Life Left In the Netflix Engaging Comedy

But unbeknownst to Libby, Marco is hiding a secret about his heritage that gets unearthed after Libby suffered several miscarriages.

Her obsession with discovering a pattern to their disappointment finally...

First Trailer for Sundance Favorite 'The Farewell' Directed by Lulu Wang
"You think one's life belongs to oneself." A24 unveiled a trailer for the indie drama The Farewell, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to immediate acclaim. The Farewell is the second feature film by talented filmmaker Lulu Wang, telling a very personal story about a Chinese family that discovers their grandmother doesn't have much longer left to live. Awkwafina stars as Billi, a woman living in New York who reluctantly travels back to China to be with her. Her family makes her keep the news a secret, only spending time with Nai Nai without telling her why they're all really there. Also starring Zhao Shuzhen as grandma, Tzi Ma, Gil Perez-Abraham, Diana Lin, Ines Laimins, Jim Liu, X Mayo, Aoi Mizuhara, and Han Chen. This was one of my favorite films from Sundance, and I can't wait for everyone to be able to watch it, and be moved by it.
