Before TV Review: Billy Crystal plays a dramatic role in this psychological thriller
Image
Plot: Eli is a child psychiatrist who, after recently losing his wife, Lynn, encounters a troubled young boy, Noah, who seems to have a haunting connection to Eli’s past. As Eli attempts to help Noah, their mysterious bond deepens, sparking haunting memories and unearthing unsettling secrets about the past.

Review: Billy Crystal is not known for his dramatic performances. To be fair, the legendary comedic actor has delivered performances that blend humor with serious moments, notably in projects like When Harry Met Sally, Throw Mama From The Train, and Mr. Saturday Night. Crystal has not headlined a fully dramatic project in his fifty-year career, making Before something of a surprise. A psychological thriller with elements of horror and mystery Before is a challenge for any performer, let alone a seventy-six-year-old like Billy Crystal. With an interesting premise and many twists and turns, Before is another unique offering from Apple...

‘A League of Their Own’ Creator Abbi Jacobson Calls Blaming Cancellation on Strikes ‘Bulls— and Cowardly’
Image
“A League of Their Own” co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson has reacted to the news that Amazon has scrapped Season 2 due to the ongoing strikes, calling the decision “bullshit and cowardly.”

On Friday, Variety confirmed that the series — based on the 1992 baseball film of the same name — would no longer be going forward with its shortened final season, which was greenlit in April. According to sources, the cancellation came about due to the writers and actors strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

In an Instagram post over the weekend, Jacobson wrote: “What luck I have had to get to tell these stories and play this character I love so much. What a rare thing in life. And so I am sad today. To blame this cancellation on the strike, is bullshit and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways...

‘A League Of Their Own’ Canceled: Prime Video Not Proceeding With Second & Final Season Amid Strikes
Image
Exclusive: Prime Video is not moving forward with the previously ordered second — and final — season of comedy-drama A League Of Their Own, co-created and starring Abbi Jacobson, Deadline has learned.

It joins fellow Prime Video/Amazon Studios hourlong freshman series The Peripheral, which also had its Season 2 renewal reversed.

As Deadline reported earlier today, both cancellations are believed to stem from the length of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have delayed TV production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates.

In a story earlier this week, Deadline reported that there may be more series whose renewals could be rescinded or pending pickups not happen if the work stoppage stretches past Labor Day, with freshman series going into Season 2 the most vulnerable. There was a similar string of unrenewals during the pandemic.

‘A League Of Their Own’ Renewed For Short Second and Final Season
Image
A League of Their Own for a four-episode second and final season at Prive Video.

The series evokes the joyful spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic, while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. The show takes a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the league and outside of it.

“We’re deeply proud of the work that Abbi, Will, the cast, and crew have done reimagining A League of Their Own which has produced an incredibly loyal fan base as well as achieved numerous, well-deserved recognitions and accolades,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon and MGM Studios. “After hearing what Abbi, Will, and the writing team have planned for the new story within this wonderful series,...

Amazon Officially Renews ‘A League of Their Own’ for Second and Final Season
Image
Amazon has officially renewed “A League of Their Own” for Season 2, which will also be the show’s last. The first season consisted of eight episodes, while the second season will consist of just four.

“Making this show and seeing the impact it has had in the world has been an incredible joy,” said series creators Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson. “While obviously we were hoping for eleven seasons, we’re grateful to be able to continue to tell the story of these characters and this world.”

The announcement comes about a month after it was initially reported that “A League of Their Own” would be coming to an end with an abbreviated second season.

The show is based on the classic film of the same name directed by Penny Marshall and stars Jacobson, D’Arcy Carden, Chante Adams, Melanie Field and Kate Berlant. The official description of the show says...

A League of Their Own Returning for Truncated Final Season at Amazon
Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, and Madonna in A League of Their Own (1992)
The Rockford Peaches are set to return to Amazon Prime Video one last time.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, A League of Their Own is returning to the streaming service for a second and final season.

And it will be short.

The outlet alleges that A League of Their Own Season 2 will comprise just four episodes.

Amazon has not confirmed the renewal, but THR notes that deals are still being worked out.

As a result, we should expect a formal pickup when the deals are completed.

The road to renewal was reportedly complicated by renegotiations with Sony to lower the drama's licensing fee.

The cast also had to sign new deals because the season will be comprised of half the episodes of A League of Their Own Season 1.

While Amazon has not announced the pickup, it is set to be billed as a "limited series."

‘A League Of Their Own’ To End With Four-Episode Second Season At Prime Video
Image
Prime Video has renewed A League of Their Own for a second and final season. Following months of talks with Sony TV, the series will end with a four-episode Season 2, sources have confirmed.

The hourlong series, created by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson, is an adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film. It follows the formation of the WWII-era women’s professional baseball team, weaving in the experiences of both diverse and queer women at the center — earning the show a cult following.

‘A League Of Their Own’ Twitter Post Fuels Season 2 Renewal Speculation
Image
Following months of renewal chatter about A League of Their Own, Prime Video is fueling the flames of suspicion further with a Twitter post.

“Spring Training is officially underway,” read the tweet posted Saturday morning on streamer’s official feed, prompting a number of responses from fans asking whether this means a Season 2 is finally happening.

While sources tell Deadline that the social media post was done to mark the start of MLB’s 2023 Spring Training, one could understand why fans are interpreting its message differently.

It’s been more than six months since Season 1 of A League Of Their Own premiered on Prime Video with no official word on the show’s fate. There have been positive signs that that show, which has developed a devoted following, would get a second season.

“We’re Telling a Story of a Generation”: How ‘A League of Their Own’ Explores the Experiences of Black Women in Baseball
Image
Click here to read the full article.

In Amazon’s A League of Their Own TV show, the experiences of women in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League are just half of the story.

A scene in Penny Marshall’s 1992 film of the same name inspires the other half of the series, which debuted Aug. 12 on Prime Video. In the sequence, Rockford Peaches catcher Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) fields a painfully fast throw from an unnamed Black woman (DeLisa Chinn-Tyler), who comes down from the stands to return a foul ball. It’s one of the movie’s most memorable moments because of what it alludes to beyond its brief screen time: the history of Black women in baseball.

Given the chance to expand the story Marshall told, which itself was based on director Mary Wilson and producers Kim Wilson and Kelly Candaele’s 1987 documentary about the Aagpbl, co-creators Abbi Jacobson...

The True Stories That Inspired The League Of Their Own Series
Image
"Batter up, hear that call!" If you finished the lyric and launched right into the "Victory Song," you might be a Rockford Peaches fan. The song and the team were featured in Penny Marshall's 1992 hit sports movie "A League of Their Own," which followed a pair of sisters into the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl) in 1943. Its enduring popularity paved the way for a new chapter via Prime Video. Creators Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson are behind the streaming adaptation, which introduces new characters and plotlines, including the formation of the Peaches team.

The journey began with historical roots, as a 1987 TV documentary from Kelly Candaele and director Kim Wilson, focusing on the pioneering women of professional baseball during the 1940s. Marshall's film would go on to explore the nuances of being a woman in a space previously reserved for men — the sexism, the ridiculous restrictions, the wartime...

‘A League of Their Own’ Series Co-Creator and Writer Tease Season 2 Plans: ‘There Is Definitely a Lot More to This Story’
Gbemisola Ikumelo, Abbi Jacobson, D'Arcy Carden, and Chanté Adams in A League of Their Own (2022)
Prime Video’s “A League of Their Own” series only just launched, but the show’s creators are already hard at work on a potential second season.

“We’re here with you taking a break from working on Season 2 of the show,” series co-creator Will Graham told TheWrap in a recent interview. “There definitely is a lot more to this story.”

The first season, out on Prime Video now, sees Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson), Greta Gill (D’Arcy Carden), Jo De Luca (Melanie Field) and more gather at tryouts for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, eventually settling on the story of the Rockford Peaches. Within the Illinois-based team are stories of all kinds of women, but one storyline falls outside the Aagpbl with Max Chapman (Chanté Adams), who carves her own niche in baseball later on in the show. Season 1 ends with some physical and literal twists, but the story is far from over.

Chanté is playing Max, which is a role the likes of which wasn't fleshed out in the film. Showing the difficulties of a black woman trying to break into sports offers her a wonderful arc.

This July marks the 30th anniversary of the Penny Marshall-directed A League of Their Own, a cinematic classic that reintroduced — and in some cases, merely introduced — American audiences to one of the most distinctive periods in U.S. sports history.

It’s also just one month ahead of when Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham’s co-created series of the same name — based on the same group of women who played in The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League during World War II — will debut.

“I think it’s as original as we could make it being based on that real league,” Jacobson told The Hollywood Reporter during the show’s Tribeca Film Festival premiere. “Penny Marshall watched a documentary about the All-American Girls League, and then the movie came out of her viewing that and being, ‘Oh, I want to make a film about this.

Why the Creators of ‘A League of Their Own’ Wanted to ‘Rob the Bank’ for Season 1
Image
There may be no crying in baseball, but there were tears all throughout the world premiere of Prime Video’s “A League of Their Own.”

Co-created and executive-produced by Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City”) and Will Graham (“Mozart in the Jungle”), “A League of Their Own” debuted at Tribeca 2022 on June 13. The TV reimagining of Penny Marshall’s beloved 1992 film of the same name was a “labor of love that has taken most of our adult lives,” Jacobson joked while introducing the pilot episode, which premieres on Prime Video August 12.

“We had a chance to talk to Penny before she passed away,” Graham explained. “She told us these stories changed her life and it will for you too. As much as we love the movie, it’s really the stories underneath it, including the ones of queer women, of women of color, those ones that didn’t make it into the 1992 film.

‘A League of Their Own’ Amazon Series Sets August Premiere Date, Reveals First Look
Image
The “A League of Their Own” Amazon series based on Penny Marshall’s popular 1992 comedy film will premiere Aug. 12.

Amazon announced the news via a first look teaser, set to the classic Stevie Nicks song “Edge of Seventeen.” The teaser can be seen below.

Both the show and film version of “A League of Their Own” take place in 1943, the year that the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was formed. The women’s league, a first of its kind in the sport, was created to keep baseball in the public consciousness after World War II saw the majority of male players drafted, essentially shutting down Major League Baseball. The show focuses on a different team than the one featured in the movie, in a completely separate storyline.

Abbi Jacobson, who created the series with Will Graham, leads the cast as Carson Shaw, while Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Roberta Colindrez, Gbemisola Ikumelo,...

‘A League of Their Own’ Teaser: Abbi Jacobson Redefines Penny Marshall’s Grand Slam Baseball Dramedy
Image
There’s no crying in baseball, but the story of the Rockford Peaches is just getting started.

Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television are behind the re-imagining of Penny Marshall’s hit 1992 film “A League of Their Own.” The eight-episode series adaptation, co-created and executive produced by “Broad City” alum Abbi Jacobson and “Mozart in the Jungle” helmer Will Graham, will premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival before debuting on Prime Video August 12.

Centered on the real-life all-female traveling baseball league formed in 1943, “A League of Their Own” introduces entirely new characters separate from the film. Jacobson stars as Carson, a catcher who joins a team during WWII and seems to spark a romance with slugger Greta (D’Arcy Carden).

Nick Offerman plays the team’s coach, with original star Rosie O’Donnell returning as a bartender. Other players include Chanté Adams, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Roberta Colindrez, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Kate Berlant, Kendall Johnson,...

This The Purge review contains spoilers.

The Purge Season 2 Episode 4

The Purge does one thing better than anything else on television right now. The cold opening is an art, not a science, and the show puts a lot of focus and attention on getting those cold openings just right. They say so much about the show, and the world of the show, and they reveal almost nothing about the plot to follow while still being the perfect appetizer. “Grief Box” immediately establishes just what the titular grief box is, what it means, and what that means for the world at large in a solid opening featuring a guy driving around in a box truck, with grief boxes stacked in the back. He scans the bar code and delivers the box of cremated remains to the grieving,...
