The BBC has revealed the first photos from the upcoming four-part thriller The Guest, starring Gabrielle Creevy, Eve Myles, Sion Daniel Young, and Emun Elliott. The series is written, created, and executive-produced by the multi-award-winning writer Matthew Barry (Men Up).

The Guest is produced by Quay Street Productions (part of ITV Studios) for BBC iPlayer and BBC One in a co-commission with BBC Cymru Wales.

In the second episode of “Black Doves,” a new spy series (this one on Netflix), the woman we’ve come to know as Helen Shaw (Keira Knightley) is seen in flashback interviewing for the job she’s now working. Well, kind of.

“Daisy” (her name at the time) answered an advertisement for a position as a translator, but as becomes clearer as her questions continues — sharing details about Helen’s personal history that no typical hiring manager should know — she’s not being asked to convert German to English. She’s being asked to decode identities, intuitions, and ideas. She’s being tested to see if she has the emotional capacity to hide in plain site, to react calmly to obvious provocations, and to get more out of the person sitting across from her than he gets from her. She’s being asked to become a spy.

“Black Doves,” Netflix’s latest thriller series, has it all. The dialogue is both clever and funny. There’s lots of political intrigue and Keira Knightley hasn’t been this action star since “Domino.” The award-winning actor Ben Whishaw is awesome as usual and there is one (literally) bloody shocking twist after another.

The setting is London during the Christmas holidays where Helen (Knightley) is married to UK Secretary of Defense Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), the mother of adorable fraternal twins and unbeknownst to Wallace, a spy feeding much of what goes on at 10 Downing Street to secret intel group, Black Doves. Helen’s information has been “lucrative” according to her handler. As is the case with these types of plots, when something goes very wrong and threatens to expose Helen, her long-time ‘Dove’ conspirator Sam (Whishaw) is sent in to help.

If you’ve watched the Starz drama, you were probably blown away by how well showrunner Laura Eason adapted Lisa Taddeo’s novel. I love book-to-screen adaptations, and Three Women was one of the best I’ve watched.

While Shailene Woodley and Betty Gilpin headlined the series, DeWanda Wise and Gabrielle Creevy also gave powerful performances.

Since its beginning, Three Women has kept viewers engrossed with Lina, Sloane, Maggie, and Gia’s relationship journeys and sexual awakenings. This series features quality writing, impressive acting, and beautiful cinematography.

Keira Knightley’s latest project is the Netflix spy thriller series Black Doves, which is set at Christmas in London. Netflix has already ordered a second series, such is its level of confidence.

The cast also includes Andrew Buchan, Kathryn Hunter, Sam Troughton, Ella Lily Hyland, Adam Silver, Ken Nwosu, Gabrielle Creevy and Omari Douglas.

The show, due to stream as we’re all opening our Peppa Pig advent calendars in December, is written by Joe Barton, who also wrote the terrific BBC series Giri/Haji.

The trailer for “Black Doves,” which debuts Dec. 5, introduces Knightley as Helen Webb, a dedicated wife and mother with a secret gig as a spy, where she passes on confidential information from her husband’s political work to an organization called the Black Doves. All is status quo until her spymaster, Reed (Sarah Lancashire) delivers the news that her lover, Jason (Andrew Koji), was assassinated.

Black Doves will premiere on Netflix on Dec. 5, 2024. Ahead of the show's debut, it was given an early renewal for Season 2, so viewers can head into Season 1 knowing that the story will continue.
