As ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ and ‘Squid Game’ top charts, Netflix is going all-in on Korean exports
Image
The latest news coming out of Netflix HQ reveals a clear trend regarding the streamer’s recent output: South Korea is so hot right now.

In one sense, that assertion is nothing new. Korean TV, films, and pop music have influenced global culture since the days of Oldboy and Girls’ Generation, and international distribution of Korean properties ramped up during the Covid-19 pandemic, when shows like Squid Game filled a void created by delayed production schedules.

Speaking of Squid Game, the dystopian thriller’s ongoing success is the main piece of evidence supporting the theory that Korean originals represent Netflix’s past, present, and future. According to data shared by Nielsen, Squid Game was the most-watched streaming original during the first half of 2025 and the ninth-most watched program of any type on streaming. Hwang Dong-hyuk’s magnum opus achieved those blockbuster numbers even though its hotly anticipated second season premiered...

How will the Grammys tackle the TikTokers? Alex Warren and Addison Rae look to turn chart success into Best New Artist bids
Image
As of June 2025, the No. 1 song in both the U.S. and the U.K. is “Ordinary”, a hit penned by Alex Warren, an artist likely unknown to millennial and older audiences.

Meanwhile, the top debut on the Billboard 200 for the week of June 16 was Addison, by a buzzing singer you might’ve heard of, Addison Rae. If you are younger, you likely know both Warren and Rae very well, as they are some of the biggest influencers of the pre-covid-era TikTok, who are now experiencing parallel rises to music fame, both plausible contenders to win the Grammy for Best New Artist. But their rise to music stardom, while unique in its way, also responds to a bigger trend throughout this century: the primacy of social media.

Image
“I hope for them to be not number one but the only ones,” K-pop legend Psy tells The Hollywood Reporter of his label’s new group Baby Dont Cry.

The four-member girl group — comprised of members Yihyun, Mia, Kumi and Beni — officially debuted Monday with their lead single “F Girl,” which followed their pre-release track “Bet You’ll Regret It.”

“I feel like the song (‘F Girl’) really represents us well,” Yihyun, the eldest at just 19 years old, tells THR over a Zoom call from their label P Nation’s Gangnam headquarters. “I feel that the song itself is a very honest and very confident song, and I believe that all of the members are also very confident in who they are.”

Mia adds, “Speaking with all of the staff around, we were really able to discuss what type of concept would best fit our group and we ended up coming up with ‘F Girl.

20 years of YouTube: In 2012, Psy rode around the world on the back of an invisible horse
Image
In February 2025, YouTube turned 20. The video site has gone through a lot over the past two decades, including an acquisition, an earnings glow-up, and multiple generations of star creators. In our 20 Years of YouTube series, we’ll examine the uploads, trends, and influencers that have defined the world’s favorite video site — one year at a time. Click here for a full archive of the series.

In retrospect, it makes perfect sense that the most influential YouTube video of all time is pretty weird.

Its signature dance move involves invisible horses. It includes the most famous elevator twerk of all time. For many of its viewers, its lyrics are indecipherable, save for “hey, sexy lady” and “oppa, Gangnam Style.”

Psy‘s magnum opus arrived in July 2012 and captivated the internet like nothing before. Its earth-shattering success was due, in large part, to good timing. Seven years into YouTube’s existence,...

John Wick 5 Will Pay Tribute To One Form Of Action Cinema The Series Has Avoided [Exclusive Interview]
Image
Can anything truly worthwhile be achieved without at least a little bit of pain?

That's the question at the heart of a terrific new documentary called "Wick is Pain," which chronicles the unlikely journey of "John Wick" from a spec script called "Scorn" into an indie movie that nearly didn't get made, then into a film that almost went direct-to-video, and finally into a game-changing action franchise that has multiple spin-offs on the way and a fifth entry in the works.

It's a compelling, complicated question, one that's been explored on screen many times and to exceptionally wonderful effect in 2014's "Whiplash," which came out the first year as the original "Wick" film (and specifically in an ending that made our list of favorite movie moments of the 2010s). "Wick is Pain" engages with this conundrum while also taking viewers through a whirlwind introduction to Chad Stahelski and David Leitch,...

Scooter Braun Retires from Artist Management
Image
Scooter Braun has announced his retirement from artist management, closing the book one of the most successful runs of artist representation in recent music history.

Over his 23-year career in artist management, Braun represented acts including Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, J Balvin, Carly Rae Jepsen, Lil Dicky, Tori Kelly, Kanye West, and others.

However, Braun’s reputation took a major hit when his holding company purchased the master recordings to Taylor Swift’s first six albums as part of a larger acquisition of Big Machine Label Group (apparently without Swift’s knowledge). The following year, Braun sold her discography to an investment fund for around $300 million. The deal, which Swift described as her “worst case scenario,” inspired her to commit to one of the most groundbreaking acts in recent music industry history: re-record her first six albums in order to own her music herself, thereby standing in complete...

Braun wrote that he will instead focus on his role as a board member and CEO of the U.S. division Hybe, the South Korean entertainment giant.

That’s how long I have been a music manager. 23 years ago a 19 year old kid started managing an artist named Cato in Atlanta, Ga and my journey began,” Braun wrote on his social channels. “Along the way I have had so many experiences I could never have dreamt of. I have been blessed to have had a ‘Forrest Gump’-like life while witnessing and taking part in the journeys of some of the most extraordinarily talented people the world has ever seen. A Very Good Girl: How This Filipino Film Appeals to K-Drama Fans
Image
As the Korean Wave continues to wash over America and the rest of the world, its undeniable influence is flooding into other Asian cinemas. Pop culture has become South Korea’s biggest export, with K-Pop, K-Dramas, and Korean Cinema taking over airwaves, streaming services, and Western entertainment award shows. Other Asian countries have followed suit, either modeling their film industry after the South Koreans or falling into it altogether.

Like other past cultural movements, Korean Cinema’s industrial complex is paired with a distinct visual style. Derived from filmmakers like Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho, current popular K-Dramas generally align with similar aesthetic design choices and thematic story arcs. They’re normally well-composed but over-the-top in everything from campy comedic acting, saturated color schemes, precise cinematography, and unpredictable plot twists. These stories usually involve romantic or familial relationships within a genre of revenge, thriller, or mystery.

The strength of South...

Unforgettable Gala to Open Award Categories to International Asian and Pacific Islander Talent (Exclusive)
Image
For its 21st edition, the Unforgettable Gala, which annually fetes Asian Americans in entertainment, arts and culture, will officially be opening its awards categories to talent from Asia and the Pacific Islands. Although the event has in the past honored Asian stars with crossover impact such as Minha Kim (Pachinko), Shohei Ohtani and Psy, the announcement indicates that Unforgettable will take on a more global focus, as it partners with AsiaLab, a Seoul-based entertainment and content platform that seeks to facilitate “One Asia” through collaborations with Api stars and influencers.

For now, Character Media, the publishing company that founded and produces Unforgettable each year, is planning to hold the gala at its usual Beverly Hilton location on Dec. 16 but notes that the date could be pushed to the first quarter of 2024, depending on the status of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

“For more than 20 years, honoring Api artists, especially writers and actors,...

Zombieverse Cast: Netflix Reality Series Contestants Ranked by Relatability
Image
The best zombie stories center relatable every-people to root for in the ongoing apocalypse. Zombieverse, a new Korean unscripted TV series featuring people trying to survive a fictional zombie outbreak in Seoul, has an eclectic, mostly relatable cast of characters going for it (in addition to the truly remarkable stunt team).

Heading into this show, a Korean audience would be familiar with most if not all of these celebrity cast members, tipping the average viewer off to the fact that this is a reality show almost immediately. However, if you’re not part of the Korean audience—and you don’t regularly watch Korean variety shows—then you are probably, at least initially, at a loss.

The series begins with five celebrity hosts sitting on a couch, commenting on a fictional dating reality show mere feet away. Without warning, one of the dating show contestants starts mauling the neck of their potential love interest,...

K-Pop Icon Dawn Goes Deep on His New Single and Life After HyunA
Image
Dawn has broken all the K-pop rules. Well, almost all of them. “I want to try getting my nipples pierced,” he tells Rolling Stone over a video call, his smile embellished with a diamond-studded lip ring, “but I’m scared because I recently got a tattoo near my nipple and I went through hell.” Tattoos and piercings are the least of the rapper’s transgressions. For the past five years, in an industry where dating is often contractually forbidden, Dawn has been known as one half of South Korean entertainment...

Blackpink becomes first K-pop girl group to top Britain's albums chart
Image
Blackpink has topped the albums section of Britain’s Official Chart with its latest work, ‘Born Pink’. It has thus become the first K-pop girl group to claim the belt on the most celebrated music chart in Britain, its agency said, reports Yonhap.

The girl group’s second full-length album, which was released on September 16, beat albums by Suede, Rina Sawayama and other global pop stars on the Official Albums Chart on Friday (BST), Yg Entertainment said.

The album’s lead song, ‘Shut Down’, and the track ‘Pink Venom’ placed 24th and 38th, respectively, on the Official Singles Chart.

Before Blackpink, boy band BTS was the only K-pop artiste to top the Official Albums Chart. In 2020, Blackpink’s first full-length album, ‘The Album’, was placed at No. 2 on the same chart.

Among K-pop singles, ‘Gangnam Style’ by K-pop solo artiste Psy claimed the top spot on the Official Singles Chart...

10 years ago, there were no YouTube videos with a billion views. Now, 317 music videos have reached that mark.
Image
It's time to pantomime a ride on a galloping horse, because 'Gangnam Style' just turned ten.

Psy's groundbreaking music video, which played a significant role in the global expansion of K-pop, arrived on YouTube on July 15, 2012. In November of that year, 'Gangnam Style' became the all-time most-watched video on YouTube. A few weeks after that, it became the first video to crack the billion-view threshold.

Ten years later, 'Gangnam Style' is no longer the most-viewed music video on YouTube. That crown was passed to Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee in 2017. Many artists other than Psy have now seen their music videos surpass ten-digit viewership, and to celebrate the tenth birthday of 'Gangnam Style,' YouTube shared some data about what it called the "Billion Views Club."

Psy & Suga's New Song Is a Certified Bop
Image
Psy's hotly anticipated new song "That That," which features and is produced and cowritten by BTS's Suga, is finally here - and we are here for the fun, upbeat vibes it delivers. Psy's star-studded ninth album boasts exciting collabs with Heize, Mamamoo's Hwa-Sa, and Jessi, among others. Bae Suzy even made an appearance in his "Celeb" music video. Now, the title track, "That That," has arrived, accompanied by a music video filled with the spellbinding and quirky group choreography and humorous shenanigans the "Gangnam Style" singer is known for - only this time, Suga is along for the ride.

In a promo clip about "That That," Suga and Psy reflected on their journey developing the song. "To be honest, I haven't gotten that close with anyone I collab with," Suga said. "It's because I'm usually not the type to meet up with collaborators in person. But he wanted to see me in person.

Why ‘Gangnam Style’ Is Making a Comeback on TikTok
Image
Those who lived through the not-so-distant events of 2012 probably never expected to hear “Gangnam Style,” the novelty hit by the K-pop superstar Psy, ever again. Yet “Gangnam Style” has made a comeback in an unlikely venue: TikTok, where zoomers are recounting their trauma in excruciating detail in a new, darkly funny trend.

It's Time For the Music Industry to Recognize Just How Influential K-Pop Is
Image
Image Source: Getty / Amanda Edwards

Arguably one of the most popular groups in the world right now, BTS made their debut as a group in 2010 before releasing their first album in 2013. Since then they've become ambassadors for Louis Vuitton, sold out arena tours in minutes, and had multiple platinum albums, and more recently, they made history as the first K-pop group to be nominated for a Grammy for best duo/group performance for "Dynamite." That being said, they weren't nominated in any major categories, despite dominating the charts, and their nomination was for their first-ever English-language single. The group's milestone demonstrates that the US music industry has no idea what to do when it comes to the "genre" and, well, K-pop groups and artists deserve better.

K-pop first started gaining recognition in the US during the mid-2000s with groups like Wonder Girls, BoA, and Girls' Generation, yet none were...

Psych: The Essential Episode Guide
Image
As a TV series, Psych is like one of those frozen yogurt chains where the wall is ringed with different flavors and you can keep pulling levers for whatever combination you want. There are the Shawn/Gus episodes, the “Shawn’s psychic lie is threatened” episodes, the increasingly genius and lovingly rendered (often ‘80s-tastic) tributes, and the ensemble classics where the whole cast is just a well-oiled machine after years of riffing off one another. You can have whatever flavor you want. And don’t even get me started on toppings.

Over its eight-year run, Psych interrogated its own premise, built out its supporting cast, let its characters play their favorite movie characters, and adapted its own internal mythology into trilogies that would make any movie-buff weep with appreciation. Here is a baker’s dozen of the most giggle-worthy, self-referential, surprisingly dramatic episodes of Psych.

Season 2 Episode 1: “American Duos...

Super Bowl Commercials Put Celebrities on Tricky Stage
Tracee Ellis Ross
Tracee Ellis Ross had to leave the set of “Black-ish” for a project so secret she wasn’t sure she could even tell her co-star on the show, Anthony Anderson. On Sunday, it won’t be a secret anymore.

Ross is one of several handfuls of celebrities scheduled to appear in the big-budget commercials that will run during Fox’s broadcast of Super Bowl Liv. The job offers a distinct thrill, but brings with it some very unique wrinkles.

Super Bowl ads “stand out through time, and they become little pieces of art,” says Ross in an interview. She will appear with Bryan Cranston in a remake of the 1980 Stanley Kubrick film “The Shining” that has been turned into a pitch on behalf of PepsiCo’s Mountain Dew. “A Super Bowl commercial is like the Olympics of commercials,” she adds.

Popular actors, musicians and newsmakers have long made their way into Super Bowl ads,...

If Macklemore Is Serious About Making an Album About Magic Then I, For One, Am Into It
For a brief, feverish time in the early 2010s, America was obsessed with the Seattle rapper Macklemore. It started with a catchy song, 2012’s “Thrift Shop,” a commercial juggernaut about buying ostentatious clothes for very small amounts of money. The track has aged strangely: You won’t see it on many Best Songs of the 2010s that roll out over the next six weeks or so, despite its then-endless radio play. “Can’t Hold Us,” a blandly inspirational song perfect for soundtracking Microsoft commercials, fared better. It’s not a good song,...

Related: All Of The Zombie Shows Available On Netflix Right Now

While numerous factors tie into the popularity of these things, one of the main ones is that they are readily accessible online, as was demonstrated by Psy’s phenomenal “Gangnam Style” music video. As for South Korean Dramas, or K-Dramas, streaming services such as Netflix have made them available on their platforms. Netflix has even produced K-Dramas exclusively for its platform, with arguably some of the best ones highlighted in this article.
