Mk.gee Kicks Off Rolling Stone’s Gather No Moss Tour With Guitar-Hero Magic
Image
“Real quick,” Mk.gee said to the crowd at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium on Saturday, kicking off a rare bit of stage banter. Mk.gee, real name Mike Gordon, is a man of few words — he doesn’t do many interviews, and can usually be seen onstage showing off his unique style of guitar-playing beneath a fog machine and strobe lights, his wavy brown locks covering his face. So when the 28-year-old does speak, listen up. It’s about to get real.

“This is an amazing night,” he said. “This is a celebration.

Ovrkast on Working With Drake, Dealing With Success, and His Supernatural Inspiration
Image
Ovrkast is an accomplished producer and rapper who has laced tracks for everyone from Drake to Earl Sweatshirt. But his calm demeanor belies his place in an indie rap scene that’s currently holding hip-hop on its back. When I speak with him at the Rolling Stone office, he’s getting ready to hit the road with Saba on The Big Picture tour, which is currently stretching across the country. The Bay Area-born, New York-based artist is also on the heels of releasing his latest album, While The Iron Is Hot.

Mike & Tony Seltzer ‘Pinball II’ Review: Bigger and (Almost) Better Than Its Predecessor
Image
In his review of 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne’s Welcome 2 Collegrove, Slant’s Charles Lyons-Burt noted that the album’s main flaw was one “endemic to many sequels: It tries to be bigger and better but just ends up feeling lumbering and belabored.” Pinball II, the second collaborative album from Brooklyn rapper Mike and producer Tony Seltzer, manages to sidestep that pitfall. It’s both bigger and, if not outright better, about as good as its predecessor, without sacrificing any of the breezy charm that made that album so captivating.

Pinball is one of Mike’s most laidback albums, as well as one of his boldest, tightest, and most cohesive to date. It swaps out his usual hazy, sample-heavy loops for Seltzer’s crisp trap beats, which carry subtle touches of plugg and cloud rap. Pinball II follows suit, consisting of 17 straight-to-the-point jams, packed with sharp production and carefree flows.

Erykah Badu Is Working on a New Album Produced by The Alchemist
Image
Erykah Badu hasn’t released a new album since 2010’s New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh), but that could all change soon. In a recent Billboard interview, the neo soul pioneer revealed she is working on her first studio album in 15 years.

Adding to the intrigue, it’s being solely produced by The Alchemist, better known for working with hip-hop artists like Freddie Gibbs, Earl Sweatshirt, and Boldy James.

According to journalist Damien Scott, the currently untitled project is a primary focus in Badu’s life. “The album has been taking up most of her time; she says she can’t wait until she’s done,” Scott wrote.

Elsewhere in the interview, Badu explained why it’s been so long between albums. “I tour eight months out of the year for the past 25 years,” she said. “That’s what I do. I am a performance artist. I am not a recording artist.

Every Tyler The Creator Album Ranked, Including Chromakopia
Image
From his 2009 self-produced debut LP Bastard to his 2024 genre-blending neo-industrial concept album Chromakopia, LA-based rapper Tyler, the Creator has become one of the most unique voices in modern hip-hop. Tyler's sound has certainly evolved from the provocative shock value of "Yonkers" off 2010's Goblin – which skyrocketed the rapper to internet fame – to the heartfelt pleading of "Earfquake" featuring a baby-voiced Playboi Carti on the most unexpected pop breakup album of 2019, Igor. Tyler's come a long way from the early days of his rap collective Odd Future, which also introduced the talents of Earl Sweatshirt and Frank Ocean.

Tyler, the Creator is one of hip-hop's great and few auteurs who bring cinematic elements into his track lists and production themes. His latest, Chromakopia, has a distinct artistic vision that adds another compelling chapter to his already versatile discography yet is still quintessentially Tyler at its core. While his lyrical focus has...

Hiro Murai, the Emmy-winning producer and director, is set to make his feature directorial debut on “Bushido,” a samurai film and epic that will be set up at A24, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire. A24 is financing and producing.

Tyler, the Creator is Harassed by Ayo Edebiri in Video for New Song “Noid”: Watch
Image
Tyler, the Creator is back again with “Noid,” a new song off his upcoming album Chromakopia.

“Noid” arrives just days after Tyler, the Creator teased the new project with “St. Chroma,” a short-but-intriguing offering that we named as one of our Songs of the Week. Chromakopia serves as Tyler, the Creator’s seventh album and the follow-up to his acclaimed 2021 LP Call Me If You Get Lost.

Get Camp Flog Gnaw Tickets Here

While “St. Chroma,” with its 85 second runtime, was a bit of a feint as a lead single, “Noid” is a more meaty offering from the hip-hop auteur. With a crawling, snare-driven beat, Sabbath-esque guitars, and bubbling synths and piano, “Noid” builds more momentum with each musical phrase. Tyler raps about experiencing some major paranoia: “I can’t even buy a home in private,” he says, before muttering in a panic, “Notice every car that’s driving by...

15 Millennial Directors You Could Still Be Talking About In 50 Years
Image
Celine Song's debut feature "Past Lives" showcases her potential as a major director of the modern era. Hiro Murai's unique vision and atmospheric storytelling make him a director to watch. Bo Burnham's insightful work in Eighth Grade and his Netflix special Inside mark him as a director with a unique voice.

With so many of the greatest directors of contemporary cinema currently in the latest stages of their careers, it begs the question of what millennial directors have what it takes to still be remembered 50 years from. With David Lynch and Steven Spielberg in their late 70s, Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott in their 80s, and Clint Eastwood in his 90s, many of the biggest names in Hollywood won’t be around five decades from now. However, there are those in the millennial generation, born from 1981 to 1996, who have now had enough time in the limelight to...

Victoria Monét and Kelly Rowland Have a Lot More in Common Than They Realized

When Destiny’s Child released The Writing’s on the Wall in 1997, Monét was about 10 years old, and Rowland about 18. Like many Black girls at the turn of the century (and today), Victoria loved Destiny’s Child.

Hailing from Onyx Collective, the series pushes Reynolds — whose food has been enjoyed by renowned figures such as Barack Obama, Lena Waithe, A$AP Rocky, among others — into the TV space as one of the few Black women to host their own show in the travel and food genres.

Her international journey takes Reynolds through Mississippi, Oklahoma, Appalachia, South Africa, Italy, Jamaica, Peru and Los Angeles, as she connects people from all walks of life and varied backgrounds through one commonality: good meals.

As viewers gather from its first episode,...

The Alchemist Releases New EP Flying High with Earl Sweatshirt and billy woods: Stream
Image
The Alchemist has returned with Flying High, an eight-song EP featuring Earl Sweatshirt, billy woods, Boldy James, and more. Listen to the EP and check out the music video for the opening track “Rip Tracy” below.

With soulful samples galore, Flying High shows off The Alchemist’s ability to craft velvety, lyric-centric hip-hop. “Rip Tracy,” which features Earl and woods, places the rappers’ calculated flows in the spotlight, while tracks like “Bless” boast melodic, jazzy arrangements. T.F, Mike, Sideshow, Larry June, and Jay Worthy all appear on the EP as well.

Like previous Alchemist releases — such as Lunch Meat, Bread, and This Thing of Ours 2 — Flying High begins with four tracks featuring lyrics, followed by instrumental versions of the same four tracks. Splitting it up this way, it makes it all the more easy to appreciate the balance between lyricism and sheer musical prowess that The Alchemist has perfected.

Earl Sweatshirt Returns with New Song “Making the Band (Danity Kane)”: Stream
Image
Earl Sweatshirt is back with his first new music of 2023, a Jersey club-influenced tribute to 2000s reality TV titled “Making the Band (Danity Kane).”

Surf Gang founder Evilgiane, who recently produced Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar’s fun collaboration “The Hillbillies,” handled the beat for the track, which is named after Danity Kane, the R&b group formed on Diddy’s MTV series Making the Band.

After making references to stacking money and “feeling like Diddy standing in a bank,” Earl also name-drops Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk) while rapping over the skittering instrumental. In the accompany music video, directed by Hidji world and Yga, Earl has a chill night out. Watch it below.

“Making the Band (Danity Kane)” is Earl’s first solo release since his January 2022 album, Sick!, which featured the singles “Tabula Rasa,” “Titanic.” and “2010.” Following the LP’s release, he stopped by The Tonight Show Starring...

Life ‘Threw’ Mavi Around, His New Album Shows What He’s Learned
Image
Seated among plaques of Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Lil Wayne at Noble Studios in Harlem, the Charlotte-raised rapper Mavi tells me about how a chance encounter with Zora Neale Hurston’s You Don’t Know Us Negroes helped change the direction of his life. Earlier this year, he read her essay about High John de Conquerer, often depicted in folklore as a prince turned enslaved person with a glass-half-full sense of humor on his plantation. “He was the personification of laughter on the plantation and amusement at the expense of the slave master,...

Fly Anakin’s ‘No Dough’ Is a 90-Second Tour Through All That Makes Him ‘One of the Illest MCs’
Image
“I’m still takin’ my shit/Parking my whip/Now I’m adjusting my fit,” raps Richmond, Virginia’s Fly Anakin on “No Dough,” a breakneck 90-second tour through everything that makes him a deeply exciting Mc. Pitted with an adventurous, funk-pumped Madlib beat, Anakin raps in a high-pitched cadence, sort of like Az if he’d won a science contest in fifth grade. Madlib described Anakin as “one of the illest MCs,” and on “No Dough,” you hear what he means. Anakin’s commanding without ever raising his voice.

Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Tyler, the Creator to Headline Day N Vegas Festival
Image
Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, and Tyler, the Creator are set to headline the 2021 Day N Vegas festival, which will take place November 12th through 14th at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds.

Lamar’s set was billed in a press release as his only live performance of 2021. The billing on the festival poster also suggests Lamar’s performance will be a retrospective of sorts, rather than a chance to debut or tease any long-awaited new music (“From Section.80 to Damn,” the poster reads, referencing Lamar’s first and latest album).

Along with the headliners,...

How North Carolina Rapper Mavi Is Charting His Own Path to Enlightenment
Image
At his leisure, the musician Mavi plays with space and time. The 21-year-old rapper from Charlotte, North Carolina sees storytelling as a way to speak his truth while he’s alive. His latest EP End of the Earth was released to critical praise and marked a significant step towards what could be a major sophomore album from the rising star. The EP’s cover art takes after Shel Silverstein’s Where The Sidewalk Ends, and the metaphor tracks. End of the Earth features Mavi’s sharpest lyrical skill melded seamlessly with shapeshifting lo-fi sonics.

Arlo Parks Is Building Worlds of Self-Love
Image
The 20-year-old poet and singer Arlo Parks started releasing music as a teenager, courting blog interviews in between her final exams. Parks, who was raised in London by Nigerian and Chadian-French parents (her full name is Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho), went on to release a pair of acclaimed EPs, Super Sad Generation and Sophie, in 2019; just before the pandemic hit, she was set to go on her first tour. Instead, she’s been stuck at home, waiting out this nightmare like the rest of us. “It’s given me some...

How Odd Future’s Jimmy Fallon Debut Brought Tumblr Energy To The Mainstream
Image
Ten years ago, the members of Odd Future wore balaclavas with sharpied inverted crosses on them for an appearance on network television. Tyler, the Creator was 19 years old, Hodgy Beats about 16 months older, and Earl Sweatshirt was still sequestered in Samoa. They took the soundstage of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on February 16th, 2011 — backed by three members of the Roots and a girl dressed in full Ring make-up — and begrudgingly censored the many indecencies that appear in their early deep-cut “Sandwitches.” (“Not Dom, but if I was a Dahm...

Earl Sweatshirt Gets Existential With Alchemist, Maxo on New Song ‘Whole World’
Earl Sweatshirt in Loiter Squad (2012)
Earl Sweatshirt shared a new song this week, “Whole World,” featuring production from the Alchemist and a verse from Los Angeles Mc Maxo. The cut will appear on the upcoming vinyl deluxe edition of Earl’s 2019 Ep Feet of Clay.

“Whole World” boasts a brooding and hypnotic Alchemist beat that provides the perfect canvas for Earl and Maxo to get existential with their bars and wordplay. “Angels sitting on my dome, had to recognize,” Maxo spits, “All the feelings I disguise, it’s there when I bleed/Eyes to my feet,...

So, How Was Your Decade, Questlove?
So, How Was Your Decade is a series in which the decade’s most innovative musicians answer our questionnaire about the people, places and things that shaped their decade. We’ll be rolling these pieces out throughout December.

Few artists can truly stake a claim to the James Brown Honorary “Hardest Working Person in Show Business” Title, but Questlove is certainly a contender. At the top of his docket, of course, remains the Roots, with whom he released four studio albums in the 2010s, plus three collaborative LPs with John Legend,...
