A Working Man and Jason Statham’s war on dandyism
Image
Jason Statham faces his most daunting opponent yet in his new action thriller, A Working Man: the wardrobe department.

Nb: The following contains spoilers for A Working Man.

The things we see in movies are seldom placed there by accident. From the specific positioning of a light to the books on a protagonist’s shelf, even the smallest details are generally by design rather than happenstance. Which helps explain some of the more outlandish wardrobe choices in A Working Man, the latest opus from Jason Statham.

In action terms, A Working Man has quite a pedigree behind it. It’s the second collaboration between Statham and director David Ayer; their previous film was 2024’s silly, deliriously enjoyable outing, The Beekeeper. Their latest creative pairing is based on a script by Sylvester Stallone, adapted from the 2014 novel Levon’s Trade by Chuck Dixon.

Unfortunately, despite all the commonalities between the two – including...

‘A Working Man’ Review: For Jason Statham, Revenge Is a Dish Served Dead Behind the Eyes
Image
Jason Statham’s Levon Cade isn’t just a simple “working man.” Sure, he’s putting in the sweat equity as a foreman at his friend Joe’s (Michael Peña) construction company, but it’s not long into David Ayer’s film before we learn of his past as a highly trained and decorated member of the British military. Full of close-ups of bullets, dog tags, helmets, and British and American flags, the opening credits serve up a barrage of images of military fetishization, only for the film to leave us with the realization that Levon’s service was underappreciated.

Not only is Levon blamed by his rich ex-father-in-law (Richard Heap) for the death of his mother—she committed suicide while he was serving overseas—but his lawyers suggest that his untreated Ptsd will make it difficult for him to get custody of his daughter (Isla Gie). The notion of...

Impressive Full Trailer for 'Escape Attempt' - A Cerebral Sci-Fi Short
Image
"We're here to help them survive. We're here to free them." Aggressive has revealed an official trailer for an indie sci-fi short film creation called Escape Attempt, from filmmakers Dan Shapiro & Alex Topaller. This is a full-on, 30 minute hard sci-fi film, which is also being pitched a series pilot. It already premiered at the 2023 Sitges Film Festival last year and won a Navigator Pirx Award for Best Sci-Fi Film at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. No idea when it will be out in full to watch, but it's showing at the Fantasia Film Fest in Montreal next this summer. A soldier escapes from a WWII concentration camp. Once he is out, he finds himself on an unknown planet in an unknown future controlled by a homicidal alien race. Staring Andrzej Chyra, Anna Burnett, Ieuan Coombs, and Piotr Witkowski. This looks incredible! Such impressive sleek designs of the spacecraft, such clean VFX and world-building.

Piotr Witkowski, And Jacek Koman In ‘Soulcatcher,’ Explained
Image
Directed by Daniel Markowicz, Soulcatcher mixes two themes together and comes out not as smart as it would have liked. Initially, it seemed like it was a ‘man versus technology’ plot, where mankind was fighting to save its own humanity. Later, the film flipped, and it became more like a ‘democracy versus dictatorship’ battle. The two themes are connected quite literally by the metaphor of a machine that can apparently turn humans into violent, psychotic zombies. It was invented with the noble intention of curing cancer, but due to some malfunctions, it turned people into savages. A machine turning against mankind; it sounds like it’s from the very near future, doesn’t it?

Spoilers Ahead

Set in Poland and Chechnya, Soulcatcher has characters that look like they have been taken out of a video game. The story progresses through a series of ‘missions’, just like in a video game,...

‘Soulcatcher’ (2023) Review: A Predictable Ending To A High-Budget Flick For Trigger-Happy Fans
Image
Daniel Markowicz brings us an action-thriller movie, Soulcatcher, where big guns go off, and action heroes throw haymakers, whereas brunette femme fatales are infallible with large sniper rifles. There’s also a massive laser pointer-like device that fries people’s brains, and the good guys need to snatch it from the bad ones. In theory, we could say the movie has all the makings of an interesting watch, but the 98-minute runtime proves for the umpteenth time that not every good script translates to a good movie. Starring Piotr Witkowski, Jacek Koman, Jacek Poniedzialek, and Aleskandra Adamska, among others, Soulcatcher pulls out all the stops in the explosions and character designs, but a poorly formulated plot and a severely predictable course of the action draw out all the fun it could’ve offered. Here’s a comprehensive review of Soulcatcher for you to decide whether this Polish action thriller is up your alley or not.

‘A Night at the Kindergarten’ (2022) – A Netflix Comedy Movie Starring Piotr Witowski, Revolving Around the Goodness of the Lead Character
Image
A Night at the Kindergarten (Noc w przedszkolu) is a movie directed by Rafal Skalski starring Piotr Witkowski and Lena Gora.

It is still Christmas, and this time around a hero – who knows how to rap, parent despite not being a father, and pull off some MacGyver moves – is here to save it.

Premise

The kindergarten parent teacher meeting/dress rehearsal of the nativity play turns into a judgment over the naughty 5-year-old, defended by the boy’s mother’s partner. Initially driven by selfish motives, the man begins to mature into the role of a father during the trial.

Movie Review

A Night at the Kindergarten is theatrical in its setting, and manages at times to step outside the scene showcasing situations that go beyond its genre. The movie manages to a certain extent to hit the mark, with the development of the characters and the story.

Piotr Witkowski is back,...

Lesson Plan (2022) – Action Movie on Netflix – Review: A New Full Contact Movie
Image
Lesson Plan is an action-thriller directed by Daniel Markowicz, starring Piotr Witkowski. The screenplay is written by Daniel Bernardi.

A “badass” movie with a retro touch that so reminds us of the movies back in the 90’s with fighters like Van Damme and Lundgren.

Note: there is no English dubbed trailer of this movie. Despair not, for the movie is dubbed, and quite well, might I add.

Premise

Following the death of a teacher, a traumatized former police officer takes on a job at the high school intent on taking down the fentanyl dealing gang he believes is responsible for the murder of his friend.

Movie Review

Here we have a number with simple characters and a storyline that is a replica of 90’s Hollywood productions, but more inclined to moralize.

There is hardly a scene where there is no fighting, and when there is none the “master” shows his tender and patronizing side.

Proceder review – the life and crimes of a Polish rap star
This biopic of the late Tomasz Chada recreates his onstage charisma effectively but his relentless bad behaviour makes him hard to like

Like so many other biopics of musicians from the wrong side of the ring road, this dramatisation of the life of Polish rapper Tomasz Chada wants to find a redemptive moral in the morass of biographical material. The problem is, Chada’s storyline is thin on salvation, given he was an enthusiastic car thief (until prison slowed down his long career in crime), a committed consumer of drugs and alcohol, and an all round toerag to most of the people in his life, including the many women who tried to reform him, and the producer buddy who gave him a big break. Nevertheless, true to his inner good Catholic Polish boy child, he loved his mum and longed for her affection and approval – even though he sort of craps on her,...
