Every Major Shirley Jackson Movie And TV Show, Ranked
Image
Author Shirley Jackson was a unique trailblazer in American fiction, crafting horror stories that weave supernatural elements with stories about grief, trauma, and mental illness. Over her lifetime she published six novels and more than 200 short stories, along with two memoirs, but surprisingly there have been only five film and television adaptations of her work. Plenty of others have been inspired by Jackson, of course, but only four films and one TV series actually seek to adapt her work in some way, to varying degrees of success.

There's something to appreciate in each of these works because the source material is so rich, but some Shirley Jackson adaptations are far better than others. So, let's take a look at them from worst to best, starting with the earliest adaptation: the 1957 Hugo Haas noir film "Lizzie."

10 Excellent Thriller Books You Can Read In A Day
Image
By incorporating mystery, intrigue, and unreliable narrators, thriller books have been capturing audiences' attention for many years. Plenty of the best movies and TV shows within the genre have drawn inspiration from novels, especially those that are easy to read in a single sitting. Sometimes, picking up a book that features a long plot with heavy world-building can be too much. It can be better to read something that can be finished quickly, reaching an exciting conclusion without delay. This doesn't make these novels any less interesting or complex, as there's still plenty of opportunity for misdirects within their pages.

Plenty of thriller books have wild endings, revealing the killer or the unexpected twist that throws the rest of the story into sharp relief in the final moments of the story. While thrillers don't necessarily have to follow the events of a murder mystery, this is often the premise as...

‘The Serpent Queen’ Canceled After Season 2, Queen Elizabeth Spinoff in the Works at Starz
Image
“The Serpent Queen” has been canceled after Season 2 at Starz.

A spinoff series focused on Queen Elizabeth The First is currently in development at the network as it looks to continue its partnership with “The Serpent Queen” executive producers Erwin Stoff and Justin Haythe.

The 1500s-set series starred Samantha Morton as Catherine de’ Medici, the Queen of France, as she navigates political challenges as a teenager in order to seize control and rule the country for 30 years.

While no casting for the Queen Elizabeth spinoff has been revealed, Minnie Driver guest starred as the British Monarch in Season 2 of “The Serpent Queen.”

Based on the book “Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France” by Leonie Frieda, “The Serpent Queen” also starred Amrita Acharia, Barry Atsma, Enzo Cilenti, Sennia Nanua and Kiruna Stamell. The series used fourth-wall breaks and contemporary music to modernize the Renaissance-era story. The second season of the show,...

Why We Have Always Lived In The Castle Would Make A Better Miniseries
Image
The 1962 mystery novel We Have Always Lived In The Castle was adapted into a movie in 2018, but the story would make a better miniseries. The book was written by American author Shirley Jackson, who's most known for her controversial short story "The Lottery" and horror novel The Haunting of Hill House, which was adapted by Mike Flanagan for Netflix. We Have Always Lived In The Castle is told through the point of view of Mary Katherine Blackwood, or Merricat, an 18-year-old girl who lives with Constance, her older sister, and Julian, her ill uncle, on the Blackwood estate.

Six years before We Have Always Lived In The Castle starts, a horrible tragedy killed the trio's family, leaving them to live alone in the house and isolated from the rest of the world. It's revealed that Merricat and Constance's parents and brother along with Julian's wife were victims in a mass murder.

Why ‘The Morning Show’ Revisited the Insurrection for Key Season 3 Storyline
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the fifth episode of The Morning Show season three, “Love Island.”]

After jumping ahead two years, The Morning Show hit rewind this week to go back to where the Apple TV+ series ended last season: March of 2020.

The fifth episode in season three, titled “Love Island,” flashed back to shortly after the outbreak of Covid-19 to fill viewers in on what happened in the missing two years between seasons three and four of the Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston media drama.

Most notably, it answered the big question looming over the first half of season three: What’s the secret between news anchor Bradley Jackson (Witherspoon) and Uba network boss Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup)? A secret so big they would do anything to keep it quiet? (Even suggest paying out the network’s hackers $50 million to keep their private communications from being leaked.)

Well, “Love Island” answered the mystery when it revealed that Bradley,...

Tiny Beautiful Things Review: Kathryn Hahn Leads A Gorgeously-Written Take On Grief, Art, And Family
Image
We've all seen stories where fictional art falls short: films where supposedly world-famous pop stars actually sound just okay, or TV shows where fictional acclaimed poets aren't nearly as talented as they're clearly meant to be. It's a tricky business to write art within art, and more often than not, the end results fall short. Hulu's new series "Tiny Beautiful Things," based on an essay collection by Cheryl Strayed, doesn't have that problem. Rather, the show about a woman who takes on a self-help column writing gig despite the fact that her own life is falling apart features some of the most beautiful, aching, soulful writing I've ever heard, delivered with assured emotion by star Kathryn Hahn.

Hahn delivers a powerful performance here, one that feels as if it continues a conversation started by her dynamic, sexually and emotionally complex turn in the underrated series "Mrs. Fletcher." The two shows aren't related,...

The Serpent Queen: Liv Hill on Catherine's Shocking Decision
Image
From writer and executive producer Justin Haythe and director and executive producer Stacie Passon (based on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda), Starz's latest period drama The Serpent Queen tells the story of one of history's most complex and complicated figures, Catherine de Medici, who ascends in power and status to become one of France's longest-serving rulers. As an orphan, Catherine (Liv Hill) marries into the French court at a young age, but quickly learns that she must counter — and in some instances, outmaneuver — her political opponents, many of whom would rather see her dead than on the throne. What makes the series even more intriguing is that it's Catherine herself (Samantha Morton) telling her own story, in her own words, to her newest maid and confidant Rahima (Sennia Nanua). Little Birds Review: Intoxicating, Lavish 1950s-Set Drama
Image
This review of all six episodes is spoiler-free.

If proof were needed that TV drama can be anything it wants these days, Little Birds is it. The Sky Atlantic series is a confection of wild ingredients – glamour, satire, feminist fantasy, postcolonial politics, espionage noir, sex, violence and comedy. It’s a heady mix, not all of which coheres but which leaves you with unforgettable images and a distinct sense of having been transported.

Set in 1955 Tangier, the six-part series is inspired by a collection of erotic short stories written in the 1940s by Cuban-French author Anais Nin. It’s not strictly an adaptation, as the characters, setting and the plot – such as it is – are largely the invention of writer and artist Sophia Al-Maria. The characters’ experiences and stories are drawn from Nin’s pages and translated to the screen in vibrant style by director Stacie Passon whose previous TV...

Little Birds on Sky Atlantic: Book, Cast, Locations, Trailer, Soundtrack

It’s common for channels to make hyperbolic claims when introducing a new show, but when Sky’s drama heads describe Little Birds as ‘not like anything else on telly,’ they’re not wrong.

The drama’s six 45-minute episodes inspired by a series of erotic short stories combine to form a lavish period melodrama with few points of TV comparison. Little Birds is an exploration of female sensuality and liberation set against a backdrop of colonial violence and simmering rebellion. It’s a provocative, heightened, almost cartoonish fairy tale about struggles for personal and political independence. It’s colourful and stylised, tongue-in-cheek yet earnest, with a killer 1950s soundtrack.

Take a look at the trailer:

If that appealed, then here’s everything you need to know:

Where was it filmed?

Little Birds was largely filmed in summer 2019 in the Spanish town of Tarifa, on the southernmost tip of Spanish Andalusia,...

10 Best Lgbtq Films of the 2010s, From ‘Moonlight’ to ‘Call Me by Your Name’ (Photos)
Pose (2018)
Whether a curse or a blessing, “May you live in interesting times” certainly applies to the Lgbtq community — the past decade saw the legalization of same-sex marriages and the end of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, but every advancement has been met with pushback and threats to overturn equal protections under the law. Trans characters got their largest public spotlight on television shows like “Pose” and “Transparent,” while at the same time they remain the targets of violence and of hysterical and reactionary lawmakers. Whatever triumphs and travails the community faced in day-to-day life, their lives and loves continued to be reflected on the big screen; here are some of the decade’s greatest examples, listed alphabetically.

Runners-Up: “1985,” “Appropriate Behavior,” “Booksmart,” “Bpm,” “Cola de Mono,” “Drunktown’s Finest,” “Kiki,” “Love, Simon,” “Paris 05:59 Théo & Hugo,” “Portrait of a Lady on Fire”

Eiff 2019: Review of We Have Always Lived In The Castle
An adaptation of the Shirley Jackson novel, We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a self-consciously quirky, Burton-esque dark comedy about a family of misfits living in 1960s New England. Sticking to the basic structure of its source novel, the film follows the trials of the eccentric Blackwood family as they cope with their outsider status and the intrusive meddling of a visiting cousin.

Directed by Stacie Passon, written by Mark Kruger, the film falls somewhere between a thriller and a comedy with a cool sense of irony lingering over events. Following a scandal involving the poisoning of their parents, sisters Merricat (Taissa Farmiga) and Constance (Alexandra Daddario) live with their Uncle Julian (Crispin Glover) in their secluded estate. Cut off from the world, they are o...

‘Little Birds’: David Costabile, Amy Landecker & Matt Lauria Join Sky Atlantic Period Drama
David Costabile in Billions (2016)
Exclusive: Billions’ David Costabile, Transparent’s Amy Landecker and Parenthood’s Matt Lauria have joined the cast of Sky Atlantic period drama Little Birds alongside Juno Temple.

The Dirty John star is fronting the adaptation of Anais Nin’s infamous collection of erotic short stories, which is set in Tangier in 1955, in the famous international zone, one of the last outposts of colonial decadence and follows troubled Temple’s American debutante Lucy Savage as she faces a culture shock.

Costabile, who also starred in Breaking Bad, plays Lucy’s larger than life father, Grant Savage, an arms manufacturer who wants to control his daughter, while Landecker, who also starred in Doctor Strange, plays his loquacious wife Vanessa. Having set Lucy up with an English Lord, Hugo Cavendish-Smythe, played by Hugh Skinner, Grant thinks he has a malleable, potentially useful son-in-law but unbeknownst to the Savages, Hugo has already lost his heart to someone else.

‘We Have Always Lived in the Castle’ Film Review: Sisters Hide From the World in Riveting Shirley Jackson Adaptation
Stacie Passon
In Stacie Passon’s dynamic directorial debut “Concussion”, a housewife breaks free of her suburban bubble by taking on sex work in the city. With her sophomore feature “We Have Always Lived in the Castle,” adapted by Mark Kruger from the 1962 novel by Shirley Jackson, Passon offers a female protagonist who’s the antithesis of her previous one: Merricat Blackwood (Taissa Farmiga) can’t ensconce herself enough from the world outside.

(The heroine of “Concussion” spends most of the film renovating a Manhattan apartment, while Merricat builds her entire world within the walls of the family manse, meaning that someday, someone is going to craft a thesis with a title like “Inquire Within: Real Estate in the Films of Stacie Passon.”)

While this period adaptation sees the filmmaker operating in a more traditional, classical mode, “We Have Always Lived in the Castle” allows Passon to work with a larger, more...

We Have Always Lived in the Castle Beautifully Examines Love and Isolation
Coming to theaters and VOD this Friday is another adaptation of a Shirley Jackson novel.

Jackson's work requires some level of depth to fully appreciate them, and if you're a fan of Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House, you will likely enjoy We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

Starring Taissa Farmiga, Alexandra Daddario, Sebastian Stan, and Crispin Glover -- stars you've come to love on television and in film.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle follows the story of Mary Katherine "Merricat" Blackwood (Farmiga) and her sister, Constance (Daddario).

They live together with their uncle in their home above the local town over which their deceased father might have reigned terribly.

Six years prior to the beginning of the film, the Blackwood family got scarred when Constance was believed to have murdered their mother and father and poisoned their Uncle Julian (Glover) over dinner with some sugar-filled arsenic.

Trailer For The Gothic Mystery Thriller We Have Always Lived In The Castle with Alexandra Daddario and Crispin Glover
The first trailer has been released for a great looking new film called We Have Always Lived in the Castle. The movie is based on the novel by Shirley Jackson, the author of The Haunting of Hill House.

I enjoy a good and creepy gothic mystery thriller and this story focuses on two sisters who live “secluded in a large manor and care for their deranged Uncle Julian. The rest of their family died five years before, under suspicious circumstances. When a cousin arrives for a visit, family secrets and scandals unravel.”

The film also has a pretty fantastic cast that includes Alexandra Daddario (Baywatch), Taissa Farmiga (The Nun), Crispin Glover (Back to the Future), and Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Solider).

We Have Always Lived in the Castle is directed by Stacie Passon and it will be released on May 17th, 2019.

We Have Always Lived In The Castle Trailer Brings Shirley Jackson's Final Work to Life
If you need a measure of weirdness to brighten up your day, look no further than this trailer for We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Superbly faithful to Shirley Jackson’s singular vision, Stacie Passon’s adaptation is a must-see for fans of the novel and, more generally, for anyone who only knows Jackson as the author of The Haunting of Hill House. No synopsis can really do it justice, but We Have Always Lived in the Castle tells the tragic and darkly comedic tale of Merricat (Taissa Farmiga) and Constance Blackwood (Alexandra Daddario), two strange sisters who lead secluded lives on the family estate they inherited after one of them poisoned their parents with arsenic. Living in their care is uncle Julian (Crispin Glover), a...

American Gods Season 2 Episode 4 Review: The Greatest Story Ever Told
American Gods introduces another new character, maybe, as three Gods vie for the favor of one human.

This American Gods review contains spoilers.

American Gods Season 2, Episode 4

One of the things you can say for American Gods is the show's creative team still manages to pull in good actors for even the smallest of bit roles. For example, the one-off appearance of Vulcan in the first season was delightful—I mention it pretty often—because of the performance of Corben Bernsen, who has always been a fun actor to watch.

This week, perhaps in an attempt to curry favor with New God The Reviewer, American Gods brings in none other than William Sanderson to play Money, the most powerful God in this history of Gods, and the God that stands beyond all descriptions. New, Old, or Other, Money has always been important, and since the first incident of bartering for coin,...

Sky Drama Chief Cameron Roach On Scripted Plans, Development Pipeline & Finding The Next ‘Patrick Melrose’
Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer in A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Fresh from the success of drama hits such as Patrick Melrose and A Discovery of Witches, Sky drama chief Cameron Roach is looking to take advantage of a confidence at the Comcast-owned pay-tv giant as it looks to expand its scripted pipeline.

This comes after Roach was promoted to the top drama job, as revealed by Deadline this morning, following the departure of Anne Mensah to Netflix.

Roach, who worked under Mensah for over five years, admits that the next few years at Sky will be more of an “evolution” and a “continuation” of the strategy that the pair built together.

“I don’t think me stepping up means there’s going to be any kind of sea-change. Genuinely, we’re in a very confident place having built this over the last five years and I think now we have a good ecology of returning series and standalone event pieces.

Cameron Roach Takes Anne Mensah’s Old Job at Sky as Head of Drama
Cameron Roach has been named Sky’s director of drama and head of Sky Studios. On Tuesday, the executive taking Anne Mensah’s old post unveiled his first two original commissions: “Little Birds” for Sky Atlantic and “Intergalactic” for Sky One.

Starring Juno Temple, “Little Birds” is a playful and intensely evocative adaptation of Anais Nin’s infamous collection of erotic short stories, per Sky, written by Sophia Al-Maria and directed by Stacie Passon.

“Intergalactic” is an action-packed sci-fi drama, set in the 23rd century. Written by Julie Gearey, it follows a crew of fierce female convicts who break free and go on the run, heading … intergalactic, Sky wrote in a media release.

Sebastian Stan
Sebastian Stan’s Career Was Transformed By ‘I, Tonya,’ So He Went Looking for More Indies
Sebastian Stan
Nearly a decade into his turn as Marvel’s Bucky Barnes — otherwise known as The Winter Soldier — actor Sebastian Stan is busier than ever, but not with the kind of safe commercial bets that other franchise players might be pursuing. A year after taking on the risky role of former criminal and national laughingstock Jeff Gillooly in Craig Gillespie’s Oscar-winning “I, Tonya,” Stan is still chasing unconventional supporting roles in smaller features.

In Karyn Kusama’s “Destroyer,” he acts opposite Nicole Kidman as an undercover police officer helping Kidman’s no-nonsense detective through a dangerous mission that destroys her life. It’s a tricky role for any actor to hold their own opposite a proven movie star in dark, moody thriller, but Stan said that “I, Tonya” opened him up to embrace that sort of challenge.

‘We Have Always Lived In The Castle’ With Alexandra Daddario & Crispin Glover Is Obscure & Disturbing [Laff Review]
Following up her debut success of 2013’s “Concussion,” filmmaker Stacie Passon finally returns with a new feature-length film that brings the horror and gloom of writer Shirley Jackson’s final novel “We Have Always Lived in the Castle” to life. Centered on a peculiar family, shrouded in an air of gothic mystery, Passon’s adaptation of ‘Live In The Castle’ is as equally foreboding and bewildering.

Merricat (Taissa Farmiga), Constance (Alexandra Daddario) and their Uncle Julian (Crispin Glover) live in isolation, banished by the neighboring townspeople after experiencing a family tragedy six years earlier.
