Four years after the death of Dmx, the late rapper is back with “Bring Out the Worst,” the first single from an upcoming posthumous project.

03 Greedo Is Back Home and Working on Building an Empire
Image
03 Greedo is back home. After his return from a Texas county jail in January, the L.A. rapper released Halfway There, a 33-track odyssey replete with Greedo’s melodic flourishes. He followed it up by performing at South by Southwest in Austin and, in June, a two-night stint at the Novo in Los Angeles — a venue that marked a kind of homecoming. “The show was turnt up. Both sold out. A lot of rappers popped out for me,” Greedo explains. “The city hasn’t seen that for a while.” While in prison,...

Rod Wave Wants To Convince Us He’s a Complicated Man On ‘Beautiful Mind’
Image
Rod Wave is an unabashed romantic, deploying a voice that blends airy pop melodies, emo yelps and guttural country rap idioms. On his fourth album, Beautiful Mind, the 22-year-old St. Petersburg, Florida vocalist gushes about love in a way that seems unusual for someone so closely identified with rap. “I don’t wanna be alone…don’t leave me alone,” he pleads anxiously on “Leave Me Alone.” He’s a complicated man, teetering between career ambition, melancholy introspection, macho aggression, and heartbroken sensitivity. And while he carefully avoids suicidal ideation,...

YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s ‘The Last Slimeto’ Is a Thrilling Mess
Image
Over four years after signing with Atlantic Records and releasing his self-described debut album, Until Death Call My Name, Youngboy Never Broke Again remains an enigma. The 22-year-old North Baton Rouge rapper isn’t a clear innovator like Playboi Carti and isn’t a symbol for an intensely creative scene like his rival Lil Durk’s Chicago or Pop Smoke’s Brooklyn. He’s landed four Billboard number-one projects in the past two years, building a massive online following in the process. (Like most social media “hives,” his fans, who...

You’ll Need Two Phones to Watch Post Malone’s ‘Circles’ Music Video
Post Malone has picked a very strange way to premiere his latest music video for “Circles.” (Yes, there’s already a “Circles” music video, but this is a new one.)

As seen in the preview video above, the visual requires two phones and a Spotify subscription in order to play. Users must open a separate Spotify playlist on each phone — Posty’s Universe on the left phone, Today’s Top Hits on the right phone — and scroll down to where “Circles” is listed on both playlists. Bizness Boi Is an Indie Producer Winning the Major-Label Game
Rihanna
Aspiring producers often aim for the home-run placement — getting a beat to Rihanna or Kanye West in the hopes that a star’s blessing will change their circumstances overnight.

The producer Bizness Boi, known for his work with R&b singers and a smattering of rappers, takes a very different approach — emphasizing the slow build, rather than flaring brightly but briefly. “You can get something with Rihanna, but you might have that one record and that’s it,” he explains. “As a producer, you have to either have your own...

Juicy J recruited Travis Scott for his druggy new single “Neighbor.” The Three 6 Mafia rapper barks melodic, auto-tuned hooks throughout the track over an airy trap beat laced with synth-flutes and backing chants.

“Filled on drugs, yeah / That’s my love in a cup, yeah / Keep it shut, yeah / Got the dogs in the cut,” Juicy J sings on the chorus. In his first verse, the “really ecstatic” emcee raps about “moonwalking backwards” and boasts, “Plane got wood floors on the cabin/ Hit a flight attendant, diamond status.” Scott appears on the second verse,...

Around the time that she was putting the finishing touches on her 2009 drama Fish Tank, English writer-director Andrea Arnold stumbled upon a 2007 New York Times piece about the desperate lives of "mag crews."
