Meteorologist-looking comedian John Oliver is a big fan of the U.S. National Weather Service, but the “Last Week Tonight” host believes what he called the “absolutely incredible government service generating essential information” could be compromised if President Trump gets his way.
You see, Trump wants former AccuWeather CEO Barry Myers to be the undersecretary of the National Weather Service. But Myers is the brother of AccuWeather founder Joel Myers and has several other nuclear family members still working in key positions at the for-profit private company. And like pretty much every private organization in the space, Accuweather relies heavily — and nearly exclusively — on the publicly available information provided by the National Weather Service.
In other words, if Trump’s two-time nominee actually gets the government gig, Barry Myers would be in a position “vastly enrich the family business,” in Oliver’s words.
