‘The Northman’ Review

Stars: Alexander Skarsgard, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Gustav Lindh, Elliott Rose, Willem Dafoe, Phill Martin, Eldar Skar | Written by Robert Eggers, Sjon | Directed by Robert Eggers

Robert Eggers creates worlds you can feel, and worlds that feel like they can reach out and feel you back. From his first chilling tale The Witch (2015), and his maddening dream that followed in The Lighthouse (2019), Eggers has once again crafted a world that you can’t take your eyes away from.

The Northman blends our world with the mythic, mystical world of Norse mythology. A world that conjures both madness, and delightful daring as we follow Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) on a blood-soaked revenge quest that embodies both the madness and mythicality from Eggers’ previous work. From the eyes of a young boy (Oscar Novak) to “many years later”, Amleth vows revenge on his uncle (Claes Bang) after he kills...

Secrets Abound in Horror 'The Village in the Woods' Official Trailer
Beth Park in The Village in the Woods (2019)
"I think they know what we're up to... It's like they were playing games with us." Someone is out-tricking the tricksters. 4Digital Media has released an official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Village in the Woods, made by UK filmmaker Raine McCormack. This already opened in cinemas in the UK last year, and is arriving on VOD in the US in January. After arriving in town, their paranoia slowly builds to terror as unsettling and grim events unfold. The indie film stars Beth Park, Therese Bradley, Richard Hope, Robert Vernon, Rebecca Johnson, Sidney Kean, Timothy Harker, Katie Alexander-Thom, and Phill Martin. This looks like a very tricky, fun "village in the...

‘Cannibals and Carpet Fitters’ DVD Review
Stars: Darren Sean Enright, Richard Lee O’Donnell, Zara Phythian, Christopher Whitlow, Dominic Holmes, Jessica-Jane Stafford, Alex Zane, Phill Martin, Mingus Johnston, Lee Charles, Tony Nyland, Laura Jean Marsh, Darren Maffucci, Grant Steven, Jenny Stokes | Written by Richard Lee O’Donnell | Directed by James Bushe

Horror comedy is very difficult to get right. Managing to cause laughs and scares is always a tricky balance, especially over the length of a feature film. The Evil Dead 2 is often held up as the best example of the genre, but I would probably update this to Tucker and Dale vs. Evil which managed to be sweet, funny and feature some very memorable and violent scenes. Cannibals and Carpet Fitters is, much like Snakes on a Plane, a title that makes me smile. It earns an awful lot of good will through title alone. But beyond the amusing Cockney vs. Zombies-style title there must...
