Bill Cosby, Questlove, Tracee Ellis Ross, Angela Bassett, Whoopi Goldberg, Adam Sandler, Magic Johnson, Sherri Shepherd and Niecy Nash-Betts are among the Hollywood stars mourning Malcolm-Jamal Warner after news broke Monday that he died.
Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, died from an accidental drowning off the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday, the Costa Rican National Police told multiple media outlets, including ABC News. He was 54.
In an interview with ABC News, Bill Cosby recalled his TV son as someone who was “very professional.”
“He always knew his part… He always knew his lines, and he always knew where to go,” Cosby said, earlier sharing how Warner was “a great studier, and I enjoyed working with him very much.”
Cosby indicated that he and Warner had remained close, with Cosby serving as a mentor and noting that Warner called him “regularly.”

The first words we hear in Brandon Kramer’s Holding Liat are spoken, over the phone, by a person named in the subtitles as “Israeli Army liaison.” In this short call the male voice tells a perturbed 70-ish man that his daughter, Liat, has been “abducted by terrorists and kept in the Gaza Strip,” alive. From the get-go, Holding Liat seems the kind of film that would tug at your heartstrings, appealing to every ounce of empathy that’s not yet politicized with its story of one family whose daughter and son-in-law were taken hostage on the morning of October 7, 2023. Learning that Brandon Kramer and his brother Lance (both of whom directed the 2021 Van Jones documentary The First Step) decided to make a film about how their relatives in Israel––Yehuda and Chaya Atzili, Liat’s respective mother and father––cope with this unthinkable situation makes one wonder whether this...

After announcing its full list of winners last month, the Peabody Awards celebrated those honorees in person Sunday night with a ceremony hosted by Roy Wood Jr. in Los Angeles.
The comedian kicked things off inside the Beverly Wilshire by joking, “Last year’s host was Kumail Nanjiani, so that is back-to-back years with a minority host. The Peabodys standing up for diversity, how about that? Which means in a few months, the White House will cut their funding and so they’ll have John Mulaney, that’s on y’all.”
The event honored 34 winners across entertainment, documentary, news, podcast/radio, arts, children’s
and youth, public service, and interactive and immersive programming, with a focus on storytelling that reflects the social issues and emerging voices of today. Baby Reindeer, Ripley, Shogun and Will & Harper were among the recognized Hollywood projects.

We never thought we’d write this sentence, but:
Kim Kardashian is one step closer to being an attorney.
On May 21, the former sex tape participant and ongoing reality star announced via social media that she had gradated law school after six years.
This actually is an impressive accomplishment.

To celebrate her academic achievement, the mother of four threw a small commencement ceremony with family and friends on Wednesday — including sister Khloe Kardashian, kids Saint West, 9, Chicago West, 7, and Psalm West, 6, as well as pal Van Jones — replete with place settings made from her old study notes.

MSNBC’s newest on-air guest isn’t known for stirring primetime oratory or deep analytical skills — but could be a big help in keeping those things on the network’s schedule.
A new promo from the soon-to-be-spun-off cable-news outlet features a reading of the First Amendment via voice-overs from Rachel Maddow, Ari Melber, Jen Psaki and Lawrence O’Donnell. A core tenet of the Constitution of the United States, the First Amendment guarantees freedom of religion, speech, the press, assembly, as well as the right to petition the government. MSNBC is taking them up at a moment when there is growing concern among certain sectors in the U.S. that an overreaching Trump White House might seek to erode such things in weeks to come.

Rebecca Kutler was named president of MSNBC Wednesday, dropping an “interim” designation from her title and taking on the mantle of moving the progressive network forward as it grapples not only with coverage of President Trump but splitting off from NBC in a spin-off being orchestrated by corporate parent Comcast.
In her short tenure at the helm, MSNBC’s ratings have begun to moderate after a significant post-election dip, largely on the strength of Rachel Maddow retuning to regular primetime appearances during Trump’s first 100 days in office. It will be up to Kutler to lead the network if, as previously announced, Maddow returns to her current once-a-week routine. She will also have to determine how to fill Andrea Mitchell’s noon spot — and, potentially, much of the daytime schedule, if MSNBC is separated from the newsgathering assets of NBC News in the spin-off.

Rashida Jones, a respected news operator who has led MSNBC for four years, will leave the NBCUniversal cable outlet to pursue other opportunities, she informed executives and staffers Tuesday.
She will be replaced on an interim basis by Rebecca Kutler, a veteran news executive with a long track record of managing talent and devising innovative programming concepts. She takes the lead role at MSNBC as it faces not only the challenges of covering the Trump administration for its demoralized liberal audience, but also the prospect of being spun off into a new publicly traded company by corporate parent Comcast.
The executive swap takes place as MSNBC is grappling with a significant downturn in its ratings. Between the election and the end of 2024, MSNBC’s primetime audience between the ages of 25 and 54 — the demographic most prized by advertisers in news programming — fell 65%, according to data from Nielsen. It is hard to beat celebrating the final night of Hanukkah with “Wonder Woman” — but that is exactly what Noa Tishby is doing on Wednesday, with Gal Gadot lighting the menorah alongside the best-selling author as she concludes her #BringOnTheLight campaign.
The campaign aims to highlight both the joy and resilience that have sustained the Jewish people for thousands of years.
Watch it below:
Gadot follows a number of other stars who have already celebrated the holiday this year with Tishby. The series kicked off with Gwyneth Paltrow lighting the menorah on the first night of Hanukkah, before Mila Kunis, Mayim Bialik, Iliza Shlesinger, Van Jones, Cindy Crawford, and Tiffany Haddish followed suit on the following six nights.
Tishby bonded with Gadot and her husband, Jaron Varsano, over the different ways in which they celebrate Hanukkah now in the States compared to how they did previously in Israel, Gadot’s homeland.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about The Madness.
As the country’s sociopolitical infighting intensifies, Colman Domingo hopes that his latest series can cut through the noise.
In watching The Madness, now streaming on Netflix, the Oscar nominee tells Deadline that he wants audiences to “look at the whole picture,” especially in the wake of the presidential election.
“I think the show is asking you … don’t just take what’s given to you,” explained Domingo. “But go a little deeper to actually look who’s behind curtain number three, four, five and six, and how it benefits them, the idea that you need to continue to believe what you believe and keep yourself separate from each other. And it keeps a chasm between us instead of you taking in all the information.”

It’s one thing to walk into an air-conditioned studio and say that you would never do something. It’s quite another to never take desperate measures when you and your family’s lives are on the line. That ethical thorniness is what initially drew Colman Domingo to “The Madness,” Netflix’s latest conspiracy thriller from playwright Stephen Belber.
“Especially after the past few weeks, I think we’re all trying to lick our wounds and try to figure out who are we as a country? What do we believe in? Where’s our information coming from? How are we distilling it down?” Domingo told TheWrap. “We have to think differently in some ways and open ourselves up to have uncomfortable conversations, real conversations, not just your opinion.

Did a motley crew of traditional media defectors and outcasts led by Joe Rogan, Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson help tip the scales for Donald Trump’s win over Kamala Harris — and shatter the paradigm of an influential fourth estate in the process?
As far as CNN commentator Andrew Yang is concerned, the answer is yes. On Nov. 7, while conducting a postmortem with Van Jones on the cable news network, the former Democratic presidential candidate derided the Harris campaign’s decision to snub the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast. “And they turned it down because she was too busy?” Yang scoffed. Instead, Trump hit Rogan’s Austin, Texas, studio in the final days of the campaign, racking up a massive audience. “On YouTube alone, … 48 million views,” Jones marveled. On a night when Harris could have fielded easy questions about some of Rogan’s favorite topics — from the benefits of psychedelics to...

ABC’s first post-election episode of The View was very sober and, at times, intense.
The show’s hosts had a diverse mixture of reactions to the news that Donald Trump has captured the presidency once again, defeating vice president Kamala Harris by what appears to be a significant margin.
While acknowledging that none of the show’s five hosts wanted Trump to win, they each had a unique take on the news.
The strongest reaction came from Sunny Hostin: “I’m profoundly disturbed. In 2016, we didn’t know what we would get from a Trump administration, but we know now, and we now he will have almost unfettered power. I don’t worry about myself, actually. I worry about the working class. I worry about my mother, a retired teacher. I worry about our elderly and their Social Security and their Medicare. I worry about my children’s future,...

Joy Reid said during MSNBC’s election coverage early Wednesday morning that “white women voters did not” show up for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
When swing state North Carolina was projected to go to Donald Trump, Reid said “we have to be blunt about why.”

She continued, “It’s a state where women lost their reproductive rights, where there was a very heavy push to get women to focus on not … putting back into the White House the person who was responsible for taking those rights away. As Donald Trump stood at the brink of victory on Wednesday morning, CNN commentator Van Jones grew emotional as he talked about the fear and hurt many Kamala Harris supporters were feeling after she lost the presidency. In a choked up voice, Jones reflected on the “hurt” that Black women who had turned out for the vice president were experiencing.

James Patterson has authored or co-authored hundreds of books over his career, spanning genres, sparking best sellers and creating a slew of TV and film adaptations thanks to franchises like Alex Cross, Maximum Ride and Middle School.
So why is the world’s most prolific writer launching a Substack with a heavy emphasis on video and opinion?
“Like most writers — even in my situation — you’re always at the beck and call of editors,” Patterson tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. “With Substack, we’re totally free, we get to do whatever the hell we want to do. So I can write opinion pieces. I can write whatever the hell I want to write, and that’s liberating.”
Patterson recalls a favorite quote of his: “My time here is short. What can I do most beautifully?”
“I love that as a motivator, as something to focus on,” he says.

Fox News was the most watched network for the Republican National Convention last month, drawing an overwhelming share of the viewers throughout the week, including an average of 9.43 million on the final night.
The question is whether the Democratic National Convention will be a far different story — a big if given that leaders in the party have at times chided or shunned the network.

Updated: Donald Trump has selected Sen. J.D. Vance (R-oh) as his vice presidential running mate.
Vance, first elected in 2022, rose to national prominence during Trump’s run for the White House in 2016, as his memoir Hillbilly Elegy became a national best-seller and he was called upon to explain the appeal of the Celebrity Apprentice host to the working class. He also was an Ivy League educated lawyer and Silicon Valley venture capitalist.

Close friends for two decades, Eva Longoria and Lauren Sánchez have engaged in countless phone conversations over the years — but this, as far as we know, is the first to be recorded.
Longoria is one of this year’s recipients of the Bezos Courage & Civility Award, a massive charitable grant that Sánchez and her fiancé, Amazon executive chairman Jeff Bezos, have been giving to philanthropic activists for the past three years (previous recipients include Dolly Parton, José Andrés and Van Jones). The former Desperate Housewives star now has just 10 years to find a worthy charitable cause on which to spend that money, but fortunately there’s one with her name written all over it: the Eva Longoria Foundation, a nonprofit, founded in 2012, providing Latino women and girls with educational programs, scholarships, mentorships, microloans and other support.

Jon Stewart and CNN panelists reacted to that very dramatic — and disturbing — debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump on Thursday night.
On a live edition of The Daily Show, host Stewart roasted the performances of both candidates, and seemed massively frustrated. Stewart was particularly concerned by Biden’s performance, with the president seeming pale, fragile and shaky onstage during CNN’s 90-minute telecast.
“The one thing that we did prove tonight is that Maga conspiracy theory about Biden’s upcoming debate performance was nonsense,” Stewart said (video below), and rolled clips of conservatives claiming Biden would use performance-enhancing drugs to be charged up during the debate. “Let me just say after watching tonight’s debate, both of these men should be using performance enhancing drugs — as much of it as they can get, as many times a day as their bodies will allow. Performance enhancing drugs that will improve their lucidity,...

Vivek Ramaswamy, the tech entrepreneur and podcast host, called for the website BuzzFeed to cut staff and hire controversial commentators like former Fox News host Tucker Carlson and Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
BuzzFeed, which raised hundreds of millions of dollars from investors in the early 2010s after it saw great success with viral stories across social networks, is under serious pressure as traffic platforms like Facebook and X decline.
The group’s shares tanked after it went public on the stock market in 2021.
Since BuzzFeed went public through a Spac, shares in the company decreased 92%, trading at $3 in recent days.
It laid off hundreds of staff, shuttered its award-winning news division in 2023 and sold off Complex Networks.
Even though the company has been struggling, it still operates The Huffington Post, Tasty, First We Feast and other prominent internet brands.
Ramaswamy now owns 8.3% of BuzzFeed after he revealed his investment last week.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez announced Eva Longoria and Admiral Bill McRaven as the 2024 recipients of the Bezos Courage & Civility Award.
The Bezos Courage & Civility Award was established in 2021 to support leaders addressing today’s seemingly intractable problems. In its third year, the purpose of the honor remains the same – to recognize leaders who aim high and pursue solutions with courage and civility. As part of the honor, Longoria and McRaven were presented with $50M each to direct to the charities of their choice, joining the ranks of previous years’ recipients Van Jones, José Andrés and Dolly Parton.
As a Latina woman, Longoria has been a longtime advocate for the advancement of the Latino community, both as a storyteller and fierce champion for education and entrepreneurship. This award signifies her incredible contributions to empowering Latinas to create brighter futures as well as her work to promote a more inclusive society.

There’s still nine months to go until the presidential election, and we’ve already reached peak talking points. At least, that was the contention from Bill Maher in his “New Rules” editorial on Friday’s Real Time.
“It gets so dull hearing these talking points,” Maher lamented, running down a list of common complaints about the economy and other issues. “The American dream is dead because Mars bars were $1 and are now $1.25,” he noted as one example of the hyperbole he abhors.
While Maher allowed that he wouldn’t choose President Joe Biden as his partner for the Squid Game, he ran through a list of things that are going well at the moment, from the economy to home ownership to energy output.
Yet, “I know what you hacks on both sides will say before they say it,” he said.
He asked, “Is it really healthy to blame every problem on Joe Biden?...

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy made waves again on Sunday in response to CNN commentator Van Jones‘ recent criticism of him.
Jones had referred to Ramaswamy as a “demagogue” in a previous on-air discussion and expressed concern about what he perceived as the rise of an American demagogue.
When Ramaswamy, 38, appeared at Turning Point USA’s Americafest in Arizona, he didn’t hold back in his reply to Jones.
He directly addressed Jones’ characterization, “And then you get the mainstream media, you got this character Van Jones on CNN afterward saying, ‘This is the rise of an American demagogue who’s gonna live 50 years longer than Trump. This is dangerous, I am shaking,’ that’s what he says.”
Ramaswamy said, “Just shut the f—- up. At a certain point, just shut the f— up.”
The crowd responded with cheers and laughs of support.

Awards darling Brie Larson is back for more with ‘Lessons in Chemistry’: ‘Distinctive and committed’
Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Room” in 2016 before landing the coveted role of Captain Marvel in the MCU. Since then, however, Larson has only really worked in major franchises — appearing in “Avengers: Endgame” and a handful of other MCU projects as well as featuring in the “Fast and Furious” film series. Larson hasn’t really found a project to show the talent she displayed in her tour de force performance in “Room.”
Until now with “Lessons in Chemistry.” The Apply TV+ show, which is streaming now, is based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus. It follows Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a lab tech and chemist who uses her new job hosting a 1960s TV cooking show to educate housewives on scientific topics. The result is an entertaining period story in which Larson utilizes her distinct energy and impressive range to full effect.

It's no secret that reality TV star, beauty mogul, and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian has had her fair share of romances in the past. Over the years, she has been linked to singer Ray J, Nick Cannon, and football player Reggie Bush, just to name a few. The "Kardashians" star has also been rumored to date several high-profile celebrities since rising to fame, including singer John Mayer, soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, and even news correspondent Van Jones.
Outside of her boyfriends and suspected flings, Kardashian has also been married three times - to music producer Damon Thomas, basketball player Kris Humphries, and rapper Kanye West. Now, the 42-year-old seems to be back on the dating scene after a whirlwind relationship with comedian Pete Davidson. Earlier in the summer, the Skims cofounder hinted that she might have a little romance in her life in a June 8 episode of "The Kardashians"'s third season.

Update: After pleading not guilty to a 37-count federal indictment, former President Donald Trump trekked to a Miami Cuban restaurant Versailles, grabbing attention across all the networks starved for visuals after the closed-to-cameras arraignment.
But as footage of Trump’s restaurant visit rolled across the screens and commentators weighed in on tha case, CNN anchor Jake Tapper had a message to the control room: Stop it.
“The folks in the control room: I don’t need to see any more of that,” Tapper said on air. “He’s trying to turn it into a spectacle, a campaign ad. That’s enough of that. We’ve seen it already.”
On MSNBC, Nicolle Wallace also seemed to get a bit annoyed as video played of Trump’s visit. “We don’t need to see that anymore. We know where he is.”
Trump dropped in on the famous eatery as his first stop after leaving the federal courthouse.

But no matter the case, a growing number of these now-former CNN die-hards are being scooped up by rivals including MSNBC, ABC News and CBS News.

“Saturday Night Live” might know its audience a little too well. Speculating in a mock commercial on Saturday that the Manhattan D.A.’s case against Donald Trump isn’t as airtight as it could be, the long-running sketch comedy series on NBC leveled with its viewers, joking that there’s a new meditation news app for people “whose entire personality is hating Donald Trump.” It’s called CNZen.
Host Molly Shannon even suited up as renowned New York Times reporter, CNN analyst and Trump critic Maggie Haberman to provide indictment-inspired Asmr for total relaxation through trying times.
“These days, it’s hard not to feel stressed out and overwhelmed. Sure, Trump got indicted. But now everyone says the case against him is weak and that he’ll never serve any jail time. As someone whose entire personality is hating Donald Trump, you need more,” the commercial began with cast member Ego Nwodim as narrator.

Updated with latest: Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Tuesday elaborated on the indictment brought against former President Donald Trump, characterizing it as a scheme to keep damaging information about an alleged affair with Stormy Daniels from the voting public.
Trump today pleaded not guilty to a 34-count indictment of falsifying business records. The charges allege that he was trying to cover up the payments he ultimately made to Daniels via his then-attorney, Michael Cohen.
“At its core, this case today is one with allegations like so many of our white collar cases, allegations that someone lied again and again to protect their interests and evade the laws to which we are all held accountable,” Bragg said.
He said that New York state election law “makes it a crime to conspire to promote a candidacy by unlawful means.” He also alleged that Trump planned to make false statements to tax...

A new documentary looks back on bipartisan criminal justice reform efforts championed by CNN anchor Van Jones during the Trump years
On election night 2016, Van Jones, the criminal justice advocate and former Obama administration official turned CNN anchor, processed his shock on live television. “This was a whitelash against a changing country,” he said. “It was a whitelash against a Black president, in part. And that’s the part where the pain comes.” The clip, in which Jones appeared near tears and essentially called Donald Trump a “bully” and a “bigot”, went viral. For many, it was shorthand for shock and dismay, an articulation of unspeakable anger, and a rare example of a pundit calling it like it was.
So it was confusing that over the next few years, Jones, a Black man from western Tennessee, was seen at the Trump White House, conducted the first (and uncomfortably chummy) TV...
