His credits also include scores of episodes of City Guys and Malibu CA — both of which he also created — along with Hang Time, USA High, California Dreams, How to Survive a Marriage and others.

He also wrote more than 100 episodes of City Guys, nearly as many of USA High and 50-plus for Malibu CA.

Engel penned a dozen episodes of teen sitcom Saved by the Bell, which NBC aired mostly on Saturday mornings from 1989-93. The popular show helped launch the careers of such stars as Mark-Paul Gosselaar,...

‘Saved By The Bell’ Canceled At Peacock After 2 Seasons
Image
Exclusive: School is closing. Saved By The Bell has been canceled by Peacock after two seasons.

Deadline understands that the cast and crew were told yesterday.

It comes only a month after the reboot of the classic NBC comedy won Outstanding Comedy Series at the GLAAD Media Awards.

The second season of the show dropped in November after the first season reportedly performed well for the streaming service.

In the reimagined series, when California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many underfunded high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the most well-funded schools in the state – including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the privileged Bayside kids (who never have a problem that can’t be solved in 22 minutes) a much-needed dose of reality.

Saved by the Bell‘s Kelly Kapowski gave up on becoming a doctor when she agreed to marry Zack Morris during The College Years — a decision Tiffani Thiessen’s alter ego reevaluates during Season 2 of the Peacock revival.

‘Girls5eva’ Helps Peacock Cement Its Brand as the Go-To Place for Smart, Female-Focused Comedy

There’s rarely been a TV moment as purely joyous, strange and poignant as the final scene of “Girls5eva,” Peacock’s new comedy about a ‘90s girl group reuniting 20 years later to recapture their old magic. As women who are — as fearsome diva Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry) puts it — “40-blah blah” years old, the former girls of Girls5eva waffle between exuberantly leaping at their dream of stardom and finding it completely ridiculous.

Summer (Busy Philipps) uses the group to distract from her stagnant marriage, while practical Gloria (Paula Pell) tries to allow herself some fun after a wrenching divorce from her wife. Songwriter Dawn (Sara Bareilles) is so nervous about performing pop songs as a full-fledged adult that she has to create a cocky alter ego in order to take the stage at all. And yet, the final moments of the season let the fierce foursome have an unequivocally triumphant...

I’ve been blown away by all the love for the show and can’t wait to go back and make more episodes,” said writer and executive producer Tracey Wigfield. “Hopefully we stay on Peacock for many more seasons, and then in 30 years, somebody does a reboot of our reboot and invents the threeboot.”

The No. 1 show on the NBCUniversal streaming service is the second Peacock Original series to get a renewal. A.P. Bio, which originated on NBC, was renewed for its fourth season on the streaming service in December. Peacock picked up the comedy for a third season after it was canceled by NBC after two seasons.

In the reimagined series,...

‘Saved by the Bell’ Renewed for Season 2 at Peacock
Image
Time in: School will be back in session in Bayside High for 10 more episodes, as Peacock has renewed “Saved by the Bell” for a second season.

“I’m thrilled that ‘Saved by the Bell’ has been renewed. I’ve been blown away by all the love for the show and can’t wait to go back and make more episodes,” said showrunner Tracey Wigfield. “Hopefully we stay on Peacock for many more seasons, and then in 30 years, somebody does a reboot of our reboot and invents the threeboot.”

Wigfield’s reimagining of the beloved 1980s and 1990s sitcom sees California governor Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) trying to save face after closing too many underfunded high schools but proposing that the state send affected students to the most well-funded schools instead. This, naturally, means Bayside gets an influx of new students, which forces the privileged Palisades kids to finally get a reality check.

Q&a with What Lies Below Writer/Director Braden R. Duemmler
Image
A teenager returns home to find that her mother is dating a man who is charming, handsome... and potentially not of this world in the new movie What Lies Below. With the familial sci-fi horror film now on VOD and Digital from Vertical Entertainment, we caught up with writer/Braden R. Duemmler to discuss the extensive research he did prior to writing the script for What Lies Below, filming in Upstate New York, and working with a talented cast that includes Mena Suvari, Ema Horvath, and Trey Tucker.

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Braden, and congratulations on your new movie, What Lies Below! How and when did you first come up with the idea for this film?

Braden R. Duemmler: Thank you, Derek. I’m so excited for the opportunity. Like you, I grew up on Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark? in...

‘Saved by the Bell’ Review: It’s Alright Because It’s ‘Saved by the Bell’
Image
The new “Saved by the Bell” announces the kind of comedy it wants to be from the very start, opening with a campaign ad from California Governor Zack Morris (played with a Republican smarm that doesn’t really exist anymore by Mark-Paul Gosselaar). The spot, which feels like it was produced by the same team who worked on Bobby Newport’s “Parks & Recreation” ads, acts as the extremely thin connective thread from the original series to this 2020 “reimagining. Since leaving Bayside nearly 30 years ago, Zack is still, in the parlance of the Funny or Die series, trash, since his rise to the Governor’s mansion was all part of an elaborate scheme to get out of a $75 parking ticket. This sequence also immediately tears down the fourth wall, as Morris mentions that after college he “became a successful trial attorney” with a shot of Gosselaar (flanked by Breckin Meyer) as...

Mark-Paul Gosselaar in Pitch (2016)
‘Saved by the Bell’ Reboot Producers on the Rules of the Timeout Power (Video)
Mark-Paul Gosselaar in Pitch (2016)
Zack (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), Kelly (Tiffani Thiessen), Slater (Mario Lopez) and Jessie (Elizabeth Berkley) are back at Bayside (in one way or another) for Peacock’s “Saved by the Bell” reboot, just in case you were running short on things to be thankful for this year. But of course, the O.G. Tigers are in their mid-40s now — enter the new new class.

Among the fresh-faced crop of kids is Daisy (Haskiri Velazquez), one of the students being bussed into the affluent area after California Gov. Zack Morris (you read that right) shut down a bunch of inner-city schools as a snap-decision budget cut. Not only is Daisy now roaming Zack’s old halls, but she’s even using his “timeout” power, freeze-framing the whole damn scene.

We had lots of questions about that choice. Fortunately, we also had two executive producers captive on Zoom.

“Just because of the premise,...

Saved by the Bell EP on the Revival's Franklin & Bash Nod (and Other Easter Eggs) — Plus, Grade the Premiere
Image
The Saved by the Bell franchise’s 20-year timeout came to an end with Wednesday’s debut of the highly anticipated revival, which follows a new generation at Bayside and catches up with the Class of ’93.

The new Sbtb immediately establishes a more tongue-in-cheek tone. A political ad for California governor Zack Morris reveals that the beloved slacker went on to become a successful trial attorney, then shows a photo of Mark-Paul Gosselaar on the TNT legal dramedy Franklin & Bash.

How the Original Saved by the Bell Crew Got the New Kids Ready For Bayside
Image
It wouldn't be Saved by the Bell without a few members of the original group, right? Even the show's spinoff Saved by the Bell: The New Class featured Screech in a main role, so we're thrilled that not only are Jessie, Slater, Zack, and Kelly back, their actors were able to give the new generation a few tips and tricks. Ahead of the reboot's premiere on Peacock Nov. 25, the new cast told E! all about how the original Saved by the Bell actors made them feel like part of the Bayside family. "It was supercool meeting the original cast," said Belmont Cameli, who play's Jessie's son Jamie. "[Elizabeth] been so fantastic. Mario just the same. They did a phenomenal job with helping us get acquainted with Bayside."

Haskiri Velazquez, who plays Daisy and shares the time-stopping "power" Zack had in the original series, was grateful for the advice they offered. "They...

Peacock’s New ‘Saved By the Bell’ Class Puts a Fresh Spin on a Familiar Franchise
Image
The thing about going back to high school is that it’s never the same as you remember. Nor should it be, given the amount of personal growth and development you’ve hopefully had in the years since graduation. Taper your expectations though, and taking a stroll down memory lane can leave you embracing the fond memories you experienced while recognizing all the ways in which you now, perhaps, know better.

That appears to have been Peacock’s strategy in reviving “Saved By The Bell,” the 1990s-era teen comedy where problems could be solved in 22 minutes, high school archetypes were readily available, and the kids had unwieldly power over bumbling authority figures. Was the original show fun escapism on a Saturday morning for the kids of its generation? For sure. But throwing a little lip gloss onto the nostalgia and repackaging that bubble gum history for a new generation without...

Old phone, who dis?

TVLine has an exclusive first look at the Saved by the Bell revival, which features new protagonist Daisy (played by Haskiri Velazquez) making use of Zack Morris’ legendary brick phone. That’s one of the many Easter eggs fans of the original NBC comedy will find in the Peacock sequel series, which follows a new generation at Bayside while also catching up with the Class of ’93.

‘Saved by the Bell’ Team on Subverting Expectations in Peacock Series But Not Making the ‘Euphoria’ Version
Image
Although Peacock’s “Saved by the Bell” sequel series is set in 2020 and made for a 2020 audience, some things remained too iconic to alter, from sets such as the Bayside High School hallway and the Max diner, to central characters such as Slater (Mario Lopez) and Jessie (Elizabeth Berkley Lauren), and the overall comedic but still family-friendly vibe to the show.

“This show isn’t, nor did it want to be, the ‘Euphoria’ version of ‘Saved by the Bell.’ I don’t think anyone wants to see Slater sending dick pics,” showrunner Tracey Wigfield tells Variety.

The original “Saved by the Bell” launched on NBC’s Saturday morning lineup in 1989, with a primary audience of kids and teens. Because it was broad-reaching in its demographic and created primarily to compete with cartoons, its depiction of high school, especially in its first season, was extremely chaste. With the exception of a...

Saved by the Bell Review: Peacock's Bayside High Reunion Is a Clever Reinvention Packed With Meta Laughs
Image
If you’re a TV viewer of a certain vintage (like me), Saved by the Bell imprinted on you at an early age, whether you liked it or not. (In our defense, there wasn’t much TV to choose from back then.) Yes, the cheesy ’90s high school antics of Zack, Kelly, Slater, et al do have a certain nostalgic allure… but they were never “good,” really. So it’s a nice surprise that the Saved by the Bell revival — debuting Wednesday, Nov. 25 on Peacock; I’ve seen three episodes — is actually, surprisingly good: a cleverly constructed, highly tongue-in-cheek reinvention...

Peacock Launches ‘Saved By The Bell’ Channel Ahead Of Revival Premiere
Image
Exclusive: Time out! Bayside High is about to take over Peacock. The streaming service is set to launch a new Saved by the Bell channel on November 16 ahead of the reimagining of the classic Saturday morning show, which will debut on November 25.

The channel will available on Peacock for free and include over 100 episodes from the original Saved by the Bell series, Saved by the Bell: The College Years, Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style, and Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Vegas. It will be non-stop Bayside fun with Zack, Kelly, Slater, Jessie, Lisa and Screech to keep you satisfied until the revival makes it big premiere.

In the new series, Mark-Paul Gosselaar reprises his role as Zack Morris. His charmingly scheming ways have paved the road for him to become the governor of California. True to Zack Morris form, he is in hot water for closing too many underfunded high schools.

What Lies Below Trailer: Mom's New Boyfriend Is Terrifyingly Weird
Image
Vertical Entertainment has released the trailer for What Lies Below. In the footage, we learn that mom's new boyfriend is not exactly who he seems to be. The mystery thriller was directed and written by Braden R. Duemmler, and it will be available On Demand starting December 4th. While the release date isn't too far away, the footage makes it seem like a Halloween release would have been ideal for What Lies Below. Most people spent the majority of their Halloween indoors and this seems like it would have been a good addition.

What Lies Below focuses on Liberty, a socially awkward 16-year-old, who returns from two months at camp to a blindsided introduction of her Mother's fiancé, John Smith. His charm, intelligence, and beauty paint the picture of a man too perfect to be human. One can tell right from the start that something is off with Mr. Smith,...

"You're kind of, uh, a weird dude." "Yes I am. But I mean, weird is cool. Right...?" Vertical Ent + XYZ Films has unveiled an official trailer for What Lies Below, a dark mystery thriller that is the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Braden R. Duemmler. The film is about a teenager who returns from two months away to discover her mother has a new stud fiancé named John Smith. But he's too ideal of a man to be human - everything about him is so perfect that she starts to suspect he might be something else. The film stars Ema Horvath as Liberty, Mena Suvari, Haskiri Velazquez, and Trey Tucker as the man. There is a mega creepy Under the Skin shot in this trailer that's definitely a wink at him being some kind of alien or creature. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Braden R. Lisa Turtle Forever: Lark Voorhies to Make ‘Special Appearance’ on Peacock’s ‘Saved by the Bell’ Reboot
Lark Voorhies
You’re next, Screech. Ok, so we seriously doubt that, but Peacock said on Thursday Lark Voorhies will make a “special appearance” as former Bayside High fashionista Lisa Turtle on its upcoming “Saved by the Bell” reboot series.

The exciting announcement came two days after the NBCUniversal streaming service revealed the “Saved by the Bell” trailer. Watch that here.

Fans of the original “Saved by the Bell” will probably remember the salacious purported tell-all book “Behind the Bell” penned by Dustin Diamond, who played Samuel “Screech” Powers on the teen series. “Behind the Bell” was poorly received by the rest of the “Sbtb” cast — and by book critics.

Diamond has since expressed regret over “Behind the Bell.”

On the original “Saved by the Bell,” Diamond’s nerdy Screech was obsessed with Lisa.

In the new “Saved by the Bell” series, when California governor Zack Morris (Gosselaar) gets into hot water...

Lark Voorhies Will Reprise ‘Saved by the Bell’ Role in Peacock Series
Image
Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle in the original “Saved by the Bell,” will reprise the role for a special appearance in the new Peacock series.

The NBC streaming platform released a first-look image of the actor back in character on set. She joins Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley as members of the original cast slated to return for the new show.

The new series follows a group of students at Bayside High, a well-funded school for students from upper-class and lower-class families. The main cast of students includes Belmont Cameli, Dexter Darden, Mitchell Hoog, Alycia Pascual-Peña, Josie Totah and Haskiri Velazquez.

Earlier this year, Voorhies shared on “The Dr. Oz Show” that not being included alongside other original cast members left her upset. She also suggested that her diagnosis with bipolar disorder, which was the focus of her chat with Dr. Oz, could have played a role in her exclusion.

Saved by the Bell Revival: Lark Voorhies to Return as Lisa Turtle
Elizabeth Berkley, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Leanna Creel, Dustin Diamond, Dennis Haskins, Mario Lopez, and Lark Voorhies in Saved by the Bell (1989)
Another Saved by the Bell alum has been confirmed to appear in the forthcoming revival.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Lark Voorhies will return as Lisa Turtle.

She joins former cast members Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack), Tiffani Thiessen (Kelly), Mario Lopez (Slater), and Elizabeth Berkley Lauren (Jessie).

This means that Dustin Diamond's Screech is the only lead original cast member to not have a role in the new series.

Given events of recent years, don't expect Diamond to be a part of the show, either.

If the new series wants to address him, it will likely be a comment in passing about what became of the beloved character. .

Recasting such a pivotal character would probably not go down well with fans.

EW did not reveal whether Voorhies is back in a recurring capacity or a guest star, but it notes that Lisa is “thriving with a successful career in fashion.

Peacock are making some of us relive the early 90’s with a trailer for the rebooted ‘Saved By The Bell’ featuring the original cast.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tiffani Thiessen’s return as Zack and Kelly in the revived series which follows California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the highest performing schools in the state – including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over-privileged Bayside kids a much-needed dose of reality.

Original cast members Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez are also returning and are joined by young new faces like Dexter Darden, Josie Totah, Haskiri Velazquez, Mitchell Hoog, Alycia Pascual-Pena and Belmont Cameli.
