Like the source material, the anime has a Studio Ghibli-esque blend of beautiful animation hiding complex and moving themes in an alternate history featuring genetically engineered animals and walking tanks that hold a meaningful story behind them and will take its viewers by surprise. But one question remains: “What did the ending of Leviathan signify?”

10 Anime That Are Way Better When You Know Japanese Culture
Image
Anime often serves as a vibrant window into Japanese culture, offering more than just entertainment — it reflects centuries-old traditions, values and societal norms. For those unfamiliar with these cultural nuances, certain anime might feel like they lack depth. However, understanding the historical and social contexts behind them transforms these stories into richer, more immersive experiences. From the reverence for tradition to the subtleties of interpersonal dynamics, Japanese culture breathes life into narratives in ways that resonate far beyond the screen.

Many anime are deeply rooted in Japan’s unique customs, philosophies and aesthetics, making them even more compelling when viewed through a cultural lens. Whether it’s the meticulous preservation of art forms, the weight of historical events or the quiet beauty of everyday rituals, these elements add layers of meaning that might otherwise go unnoticed. Exploring these cultural threads reveals that anime isn’t just a form of escapism...

10 Disturbing Anime Endings That'll Make You Sick to Your Stomach
Image
After a long journey of trials and tribulations, most anime heroes arrive at their well-deserved happy ending, having defeated their adversaries and restored peace in the world. However, not all stories in anime follow uplifting fantasies with joyful finales. Some of anime’s best and most emotionally resonant narratives tap into much darker themes in their conclusions, leaving fans and heroes to bear the weight of cruel, disturbing epilogues.

These kinds of endings stick with audiences - for better or worse - long after the credits roll, their subversive and disquieting nature defying expectations by refusing to give audiences the satisfaction of a gratifying resolution. Be it a shocking final twist that snatches victory from the hands of the heroes at the last moment or an expectedly devastating climax to a narrative swarming with despair, anime’s cruelest and most disturbing endings can be controversial - yet never cannot have an impact.

10 Most Immature Shonen Anime Main Characters, Ranked
Image
Shonen anime has many recognizable traits. Its stories focus on teamwork and friendship. There's plenty of action to keep the story going. They're fun-filled and have plenty of humor to keep young readers intersted. However, another common trait is that their usually male protagonists don't act their age.

These immature protagonists pick fights too easily, eat way more than their body weight, and are filled with boundless energy. Some pick their noses. Others throw a fit when they're told to do something they don't want to do. Though these shonen protagonists are beloved, they're also way too immature for their own good.

10 Best Kuudere Characters In Anime, Ranked
Image
Kuudere characters in anime are some of the calmest, rarely showing emotions and instead remaining in a constant state of stoicism. While a tsundere character in anime might hide their true emotions, kuuderes aren't hiding anything they really are that calm. Kuudere characters aren't devoid of emotion, however. There are rare moments where a kuudere character will break, showing a brief flash of feeling. These moments are usually more fulfilling because of their stoicism, highlighting how important the situation must be if it made a kuudere care.

Kuuderes always make for some of the best side characters in anime. They're reliable, predictable, and are usually the last people to end up in a panic. They come in all shapes and sizes, showing that no matter who or where a character is, they too can be as cool as the other side of the pillow.

10 Best Dystopian Sci-Fi Anime, Ranked
Image
Anime is usually seen in an almost colorful and grandiose light, with beautiful shojo works and action-packed shonen anime giving the medium this image. At the same time, anime is no stranger to violent, post-apocalyptic worlds. Many of the best and biggest anime are set in this genre, which speaks to just how dark things can get in the medium.

One of the most influential action anime of all time is set in a dystopia, while a recent shonen hit was a somewhat more lighthearted take on the concept. Conversely, elements of dystopia show up in one of the darkest takes on isekai ever. Needless to say, those looking for a grim, dystopian anime to watch have several options available.

10 Best Anime Heroes Like Black Clover's Asta
Image
Black Clover's Asta is one of the freshest shnen protagonists to emerge since the end of the original Big Three. He's always putting his best foot forward and rarely has a frown on his face. He's easy to root for, works harder than anyone else in Black Clover, and is one of the strongest characters in the series. There are several other anime heroes that share these traits with him, making their series as easy-to-watch as Black Clover.

Asta's biggest characteristics are his unflinching dedication to his goals and his friends, his almost supernatural charm and enthusiasm, and, of course, his naive innocence. There are a range of anime heroes that share these traits with the Anti-Magic swordsman. Some characters share Asta's enthusiasm, but aren't as naive to the world around him. Others have just as charismatic, but may have a darker side to their personality than Asta.

Anime Speeches That Moved Viewers to Tears
Image
Although it's commonly believed that actions speak louder than words, sometimes, nothing can be more soul-stirring and inspirational than a powerful string of words said at the right time. Every time anime characters make their voices truly heard, be it in a motivational speech of encouragement or a heart-wrenching final monologue, their sincere sentiment has an impact both on the audience and those they're addressing. Even those speeches more humorous than serious, like Sakata Gintoki's, are worth remembering.

An intense speech has the power to shift worldviews, persuade minds, and even change the course of history. Anime's best orators have long since mastered the art of the spoken word in order to rally their troops, like in the case of Rider and Erwin, or to evoke some other respect. These anime speeches have become their shows' most memorable and epic moments, and the words uttered by their declaimers are unparalleled in their magnitude and eloquence.

10 Strongest Anime Villains Who Can Beat Batman
Image
Batman is a world-renowned sleuth who fights crime under the cover of night. The Dark Knight is known for taking down quirky evildoers and has even defeated villains who are much stronger than him. For as formidable as the DC universe can be, far more unique and powerful villains can be found in anime.

Batman may be impressive, but hed be hard-pressed to defeat some of the strongest anime villains around. These anime villains arent only ruthless, they're nearly unbeatable even in their own series. They show no mercy whatsoever. The Caped Crusader is strong, but he would be powerless to the abilities of these nere-do-wells. These villains may be flashy, but they're much more serious about their destruction than any Batman villain.

Sanrio's New Ranking of Kings Crossover With Hello Kitty & More Gets Worldwide Release
Image
Sanrio's beloved mascots like Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, My Melody and Kuromi have mass global appeal, but official releases are still often exclusive to Japan. Now, however, its latest crossover offers merchandise that's available for pre-order worldwide, and for one of the most heartfelt anime series to air in recent years.

Ranking of Kings, a coming-of-age fantasy anime based on the manga of the same name, premiered in 2021 and took its season by storm. Written by Taku Kishimoto and animated by Wit Studio, Ranking of Kings made headlines for its enormously sympathetic cast, unexpected fairy tale deconstructions and powerful tear-jerker moments. Its new collaboration with Sanrio may seem equally surprising at first glance, although the specific character matchups also feel oddly appropriate.

Best Anime With Underdog Heroes
Image
A timeless trope that never fails to generate excitement, underdog stories count as some of the most beloved in anime. The endless appeal of the tension generated by rooting for the disadvantageous hero lies in the inspiring nature of the underdog - someone who prevails and never gives up the battle against impossible odds. Unlike the more predictable stories of overpowered protagonists, the stakes in underdog narratives are always high, and the emotional gratification of finally witnessing the heros hard work pay off is immeasurable.

While most mediums harbor a fondness for underdog protagonists, anime is especially rich with such stories, especially in the sports and battle shonen genres. From grand epics of unlikely heroes rising to the very top of their verse to grounded tales of hard work prevailing in the face of day-to-day challenges, some of the mediums most notable must-watch series feature lovable underdogs as their protagonists.

‘Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle’ Review
Image
Features the voices of: Ayumu Murase, Kaito Ishikawa, Yuki Kaji, Yuichi Nakamura | Written and Directed by Susumu Mitsunaka

An epic basketball game is set to take place between rival teams Karasuno High School and Nekoma High School. It also means that rival players Shoyo Hinata (Ayumu Murase) and Kenma Kozume (Yuki Kaji) finally get their chance to play against each other, after numerous practice matches. As is the way of The Dumpster Battle, as soon as one team loses it’s all over — and the match can never be replayed.

Sometimes it can be a tall order to make sport exciting, but on the whole, anime excels at perfecting this niche art. From ice skating drama in Yuri On Ice to the aptly named Cheer Boys!, physical exercise comes to life in an entirely new way through these storylines. The most well-known is undoubtedly Haikyu!!, a rambunctious anime about high school basketball.
